Hawksbill Loop Trailhead

Hawksbill Loop Trailhead is one of the best ways to reach the highest peak in Shenandoah National Park (4,050 ft). The loop is well-marked, fairly moderate, and offers options: you can take the shorter but steeper Upper Hawksbill Trail or the slightly longer, more gradual Lower Hawksbill Trail and make it a nice circuit. The trail itself is peaceful, shaded, and not overly crowded compared to some other popular hikes in Shenandoah. At the summit, you’re rewarded with a spectacular 360° view, on a clear day you can see the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Shenandoah Valley, and layers of ridges stretching out endlessly. There’s also a stone observation platform at the top that makes it easy to soak it all in. Overall, this trailhead offers one of the most rewarding hikes in Shenandoah for the effort you put in. Highly recommended if you want a mix of forest walk and jaw-dropping summit views! ✅ Tips: 1. Go early in the morning or near sunset for the best light and fewer people. 2. Bring a light jacket (wind at the summit can be surprisingly strong.) 3. Parking can fill up quickly on weekends, so plan to arrive a bit early.

The trailhead itself is tight with not much parking. The parking thats there can be quite steep off the edge of the road, as in 6 inches off the side of the asphalt so your vehicle may rub parking or leaving. I went much later in the day and was able to park, but if you go midday theres zero chance of parking in the lot without waiting. Otherwise I did the loop trail which was just under 3.5 miles. The trail to the summit is STEEP.

The trail is about 3 miles on the loop, there is one side that is a gradual include to the top and goes around the back side of the mountain (which I would recommend taking up) and a rather steep side that I would recommend taking down. The views from the top are absolutely stunning and worth the hike.

Challenging but totally worth it! The hike to Hawksbill Summit from the lower trail is about a mile (one way) with a steep 690-foot elevation gain. It’s a solid workout, especially with some rocky sections and light scrambling along the way. The view at the top makes it all worthwhile—absolutely stunning overlook with a picnic table to rest and take it all in. There’s plenty of parking at the trailhead, but no restrooms and it’s not handicap accessible. Note: there are two trails to reach the summit, so check which one fits your comfort level. Definitely recommend for those looking for a short but tough hike with a big payoff!

Moderate for the angle/pitch of trail. Take the trial around the back and up to summit if you don't want to climb quickly.

Wonderful trail with the best views of Shenandoah at the end! The peak makes up for the rocky climb up and is an absolute stunner of a trail! I enjoyed my hike which was intense yet very enjoyable. My dogs were wiped out but had a great time with the sun and hike!!

Beautiful hike! We took the Lower trail and though short, it is strenuous. The view at the top is incredible, making the hike worth it.

This trail starts with a difficult climb to reach the summit. It's a steep uphill but levels out once you get to the top. We were going to do the loop which is about 2.5 miles but ended up missing a turn so took upper hawksbill loop trail bag following old rag road to the parking lot, it was a little over 2.5 miles so not that much longer. This trail can be a loop or out and back. The summit was beautiful, we hiked early in the morning. Around 8:30 is when we got to the summit so there were some shadows but it was still pretty.
