Hawksmoor House, Nr Stellenbosch, South Africa - Explore & Book

"So you've arrived in Cape Town but can't decide whether to head straight for the Winelands or enjoy the city. Hawksmoor lets you have your cake and eat it. This 300-year-old Cape Dutch homestead is on the edge of the Winelands, just 15 minutes' drive from Stellenbosch but close enough to Cape Town for you to nip back to the city. If you stay, you can relax in style: inside there are fine antiques, while outside on the veranda white muslin curtains waft in the breeze. Beautifully peaceful, we keep on returning here to start our South African stays. There's a sense of living in a different era here but it's far from fusty: arriving through the farm-style kitchen with its Aga stove and shiny copper pots, you immediately feel at home. The 16 inviting rooms are found in four buildings (former farm outhouses) set around the historic 'werf', beautiful flowering gardens and reflection pond. All have contemporary touches with silver-painted bedposts and old chairs covered with funky fabrics. It may be a working farm but think pretty dappled lawns shaded by oaks and jacarandas, a pool, in-room massages and lazy sundowners. Highs Wonderfully peaceful with a relaxed make-yourself-at-home ambiance made more enjoyable by the large comfortable rooms that successfully mix old and new Good location for both the Winelands and Cape Town (a 40-minute drive) Very helpful and knowledgeable managers, who make great efforts to train disadvantaged locals to a high standard If you like dogs, their German pointers, Grace, Virginie and Jack, are never far away The view from the veranda: a great place to watch some stunning sunsets with Table Mountain in the distance Lows If you want a change from the onsite restaurant you'll have to drive out, but there are plenty of good restaurants in the area and their recommendations are excellent Be prepared to take breakfast with other guests at one long table, but for us this was enjoyable In-room tech is limited to WiFi (no TVs or phones), but this can be a real joy for many No kids under 12 allowed" - Aidan Forestier-Walker

We stayed just one night as this historical farmstead. There were many glitches, and if it were advertised as a B&B, instead of an Hotel, our expectations would be more in keeping with what you get. That aside, it's a beautiful authentic Cape Dutch farmstead, run by staff. The extensive gardens are filled with birdsong, birds, veteran oak trees and overfilled spilling-over flowers! The interior is fine, with room for more Cape antiques which would be more fitting. However, having said that, it has not been ruined by over-renovation, which you find in many old homesteads - so we like that about it. I would be very happy to return, I could fall in love with this place quite easily. It is relaxed and charming. Thank you for our lovely stay !

We were attending a friend's wedding reception close by and opted to stay here instead of driving home. We were not disappointed! Stunning decor, incredibly comfy bed and a delicious hot breakfast. The staff were very accommodating and nothing was too much trouble. Would highly recommend.

I don’t even know how to fully put into words how disgusted I am by my experience here. While the property itself is lovely and the rooms are beautiful, I will never return to this guesthouse after my shocking experience. I stayed here with a bridal party the night before my friends wedding. At 02:30AM, two men wearing balaclavas entered my room where I was staying with another bridesmaid. They attacked, assaulted us and stole our valuables. The farm manager arrived, he had been drinking and pitched up with his rifle…and told us not to call the police, alongside many other shocking remarks like “this is South Africa” and “this is a farm, what did you think would happen”, even though the farm has electric fencing. It’s taken over 2 weeks for my friend to get a refund. The response from the owner was not only delayed, but completely undermined the severity of what happened and has dismissed our requests for liability of what happened. DO NOT STAY HERE!

Initially, we were not at all impressed with either the presentation or the management of Hawksmoor House. Poor service by under trained, though kind-hearted staff, and dilapidated furnishings etc. However the problem is that this venue should be offered as a BnB - not an hotel. And the owner should be living here overseeing the staff and the management. An hotel (and our expectations of an hotel) is a completely different cup of tea. Firstly, the name should be reverted to its historical name of Matjieskuil, because Hawksmoor has nothing whatever to do with this charming old Cape Dutch farmhouse, with the date 1810 written in plaster on the main gable. It is an H-design, full of an eclectic collection of old furniture - not so much Cape antiques as curated (not quite) junk. The gardens are quite dreamy, and overnight the place will charm you in your sleep. There's a lot of negative stuff to say, but we're glad we stayed here even tho it's not up to standard

Hawksmoor was beautiful, just a stunning location and amazing staff. This was the second time we visited and it did not disappoint. Due to being bumped off our flight, we were a day late arriving and the care and hospitality extended to my parents in my absence was above and beyond. Lovely food, comfortable beds and a glorious shower. The gardens are so peaceful and the pool just lovely. A home away from home and a wonderful place to relax.

A beautiful property & a privilege to stay somewhere so steeped in history. ||The hosts are taking great care to restore the property sympathetically & I think it’s still a work in progress with more to do.||It’s a place to relax. No tech: no tvs or decent WiFi but a digital detox can be a good thing. ||Hosts are delightful & accommodating.

The property is a Cape Dutch house and it is preserved very well. You can feel the breath of history in every room, every furniture unit and around. The staff is friendly and caring. It was a great experience.

We loved the location when we first arrived. We found that in the Chinese room the curtains were so badly rotten they were ripping as you pull them to open or close. Bathroom lights cannot switch off, they are faulty so stay on the entire time. Lights outside the doors don't work so came back each night in pitch blackness. Our friends managed to have one short shower the first night but only one person, we reported it the next morning when we had breakfast before leaving for the day. When we got back we were told there was actually nothing wrong so our friends tried to shower and only had enough hot water for a half a shower, rinsed off with cold water, second person had no hot water at all. Their fridge was completely frozen solid and closed when we arrived the first day. We were there for 3 nights. Second day reporting water problem and they found that the gas bottle was empty... To pay that price for a room and only one person can shower for two days....? In our room something went wrong with the toilet at the back pipe and sewage water leaked back into the bathroom all over the floor during the night, what a disgusting smell and sight to wake up to in the morning. Lots of mould growing around the joints of the shower. We never saw the owner and the manager was only found by asking where they were so we could talk to them. No proper management, no owners in sight. The breakfasts were excellent and Sylvie was very professional and helpful. I would never stay here again. We took two rooms for 3 nights. China room and grey room. Pool water was opaque so we decided not to swim, it looked dirty.
