The 10 Most Haunted Hotels in America to Book This Halloween - AFAR

"Situated in a town synonymous with the supernatural, this grand property is best known for Room 325—where guests have reported apparitions at the foot of the bed, objects moving or vanishing and later reappearing, sudden cold drafts, and persistent feelings of being watched—and Room 612, where a woman’s spirit has been seen standing in a corner. The hotel’s haunted lore has been amplified by pop-culture moments (it served as a filming location for Bewitched), a 1990 séance attempting to contact Harry Houdini, and a 2007 Ghost Hunters episode, though some historical claims have been disputed by local historians." - Bailey Berg

The Hawthorne Hotel was truly the wedding venue of my dreams. I could not be more grateful to every single person who works there for making our day so special and seamless. We had the absolute pleasure of working with Beth Pasquarello, and she was nothing short of incredible. Anyone who can handle my family’s chaos deserves a medal, but Beth went above and beyond that. Every detail I obsessed over, she cared about just as much. Every idea we had, she made happen. From the chairs and menu to the ballroom layout and flow of the night—Beth made sure every single element was perfect. And I mean perfect. The entire staff was just as wonderful. We held our ceremony outdoors in the Salem Commons, and in true New England fashion, it downpoured right in the middle of it. What could’ve been a disaster turned into one of my favorite memories, thanks to the Hawthorne team. Between the ceremony and cocktail hour, they greeted our soaked guests with warm towels and hair dryers. By the time cocktail hour was in full swing, everyone was dry, laughing, and having the best time again. Throughout the night, the staff checked on me and my husband constantly—bringing us food, drinks, and reassurance. Their kindness and professionalism made us feel so cared for. And the food… unbelievable. There’s wedding food, and then there’s Hawthorne Hotel food. Our guests are still talking about how it was the best meal they’ve ever had at a wedding! During cocktail hour, we served oysters, duck pâté, and scallops—each one perfection. For dinner, we chose filet and sea bass, and somehow, they were even better. I still dream about that meal. The hotel itself is absolutely stunning. As someone who always dreamed of getting married in Salem, the Hawthorne exceeded every expectation. The historic charm, elegant ballroom, and cozy rooms created the perfect backdrop for our celebration. Whether you want a classic New England wedding, a whimsical spooky Salem vibe, or (like me) a mix of both, the Hawthorne delivers it all—with style and magic. Ask for the haunted bridal suite, and you will feel it too! I had the most AMAZING wedding here, and I would choose the Hawthorne a million times over.

It was my dream to stay in Hawthorne Hotel when visiting my dream destination, Salem. I love the historical aesthetic and yet they manage to have current hotel functions. It shows it’s an old place but in a homey and beautiful way. I appreciated their accommodations as someone with a 2 year old. They not only provided a pack and play crib but also a mini fridge free of charge to store some food for our daughter. The front of restaurant was also very kind and accommodating when I requested something that wasn’t on the menu for my daughter. I also appreciated the complimentary coffee/water/lemonade in the lobby everyday, it was delightful to sit there while drinking, especially with the calming and classical music in the background. And don’t get me started with the location. It is dead centre in Salem and EVERYTHING is walking distance, which is amazing for families. Our view was of the Witch Museum and Salem Common. When I visit Salem again I will definitely try to stay here again as well. It’s got convenience, history, and luxury wrapped in one. You get what you pay for!

Our stay at the Hawthorne Hotel was absolutely wonderful. The room was clean, quaint, and full of charm. The bathroom was historically small, so for our girls’ trip it was essential to book the two queen beds/ two bathroom. The bed and pillows were incredibly comfortable, and the linens were top-notch.||The hotel’s architecture is gorgeous, and the staff were consistently friendly and helpful. We loved the thoughtful touches in the lobby—complimentary tea and coffee in the morning, and fresh lemonade and ice water in the afternoon. Housekeeping was fabulous, keeping everything spotless.||The Tavern was a highlight, with delicious food and outstanding cocktails. I highly recommend trying the Aviator cocktail and the blackberry grilled cheese—yum!||Everything about our experience was seamless; not a single issue arose, which made it so easy to truly relax and enjoy our vacation. The location is also fantastic—walking or Bluebike distance from just about everything in Salem.||Honestly, the level of customer service here exceeded even Disney expectations. I would 1000% stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Salem.

It was an okay stay. I find it odd that a pet friendly hotel has carpeting throughout the room. You have to call the front desk if you want a mini fridge for the room, there's no microwave in the room. The front desk staff is professional but not friendly or welcoming. They are very snooty. The cleaning staff is very attentive, friendly, and thorough. You simply can't beat the location but everything else is hype. I would stay else where when we go again. I couldn't wait to check out.

We recently had an excellent four-night stay at the Hawthorne. Even though we had one of the smaller rooms, it was extremely comfortable and clean. The location in downtown Salem is unsurpassed for walking to local attractions and many excellent restaurants. There is ample free parking in the hotel's two parking lots, no small thing in a city with difficult parking. The two restaurants onsite are both excellent. We had three meals in The Tavern, a casual, cozy room with great service and yummy food. Perhaps best of all was the great service from all staff members, particularly the front desk staff. Laurie and Joan provided cheerful and very helpful service. The only negative thing I have to say is that our room did not have an in room coffee maker. It's a long trek to the lobby in the morning for a cup of coffee. We really enjoyed our stay and would stay here again anytime.

This is a great hotel. Came here on a trip with my parents, we booked it because I wanted the “haunted” room, 325. They stayed in another room, same floor. Rooms were very nice, clean. Mine was spacious, since it’s technically two bedrooms and an adjoining bathroom. Closet is large. Shower was nice. Unfortunately, nothing spooky happened for me during my stay. Hotel is very old, has a lot of character but they’ve done a great job keeping up with things. We did not get a chance to eat at the restaurant, but we had a drink at the bar which was very good. My only negative I will say, housekeeping just walked into my room around 9:45AM on check out day. No knock, just swiped her key card and walked in. Definitely had not checked out yet, so that was a little off putting. Luckily I was dressed!

This hotel was the perfect place to call home base for our Salem trip! Its location right at the end of Essex Street and just 5 minutes walking from the water meant we rarely had to catch rides unless we wanted to venture out far from downtown. We were doing a ton of shopping so it was nice always being a few minutes away from being able to drop stuff off! The roaring 20's aesthetic and historic info plastered around the lobby was fun to read, and the food was always amazing, though fair warning the portions are all shareable (especially the sundae served in a mixing bowl and cheese plate appetizer that includes 4 whole blocks of cheese, an entire baguette, and piles of fruit). The staff were also all super nice, especially the bartender. Our room was tiny and adorable, with the famous "shower closet" being a fun perk every morning. I highly recommend getting a room early as even in September it got booked quick (both by tourists and hosting weddings and corporate events). We will definitely be staying there again!

Large girls group weekend in Salem and the Hawthorne Hotel was our home for three days. Outstanding food, very helpful and friendly staff and well appointed rooms. The lobby was so nice for many of us to meet and visit. I travel with a service dog and this is one of the most pet friendly hotels I have stayed in. We give this hotel two major thumbs up.

Yelp
The Hawthorne Hotel is such a cool spot with its historic charm and reputation for being haunted. While we didn't stay overnight, we attended two events here: the Witches Ball and the Dumb Supper. Both were fantastic, and the food really stood out, especially the lobster bisque at the Dumb Supper. It was thick and velvety and I could have eaten a bucket of it. We enjoyed both events for very different reasons. The ball was full of dancing, drums, amazing costumes and balloon art, and small plates. It was a great party. The supper was a solemn, reverent space that was well-organized and cathartic with a lovely 7 course dinner to go alongside it. The space itself is beautiful, with high ceilings and comfortable furniture that made the events feel elegant yet cozy. The staff was friendly and attentive, making sure everything ran smoothly. We'd love to stay for a proper visit in the future.

Yelp
If you are looking to stay in the heart of Salem in a beautiful historic building then the Hawthorne is your place. This is just steps from Salem Commons, Witch Museum, and all the attractions. This is a National Historic Hotel and is full of charm. The lobby was so inviting with all of its fall decor and coffee/hot apple cider available. There are two restaurants here, but we only dined in Nathaniels for Breakfast. Breakfast was huge portions but good and nice start to the day. We booked an economy room as that was all that was left. However I would not recommend this room unless it is for a single person. The bed is a full size and made for an interesting night of sleep as a couple. The room was very simple and basically a bed and bathroom. The older decor and theme, however, fit well with the hotel and town. We would definitely stay here again but choose a larger room. There is plenty of parking for hotel guests which makes a great perk as parking is not easy to find in town.

Yelp
I have been to both restaurants and enjoyed many events, including weddings, in the beautiful and historic ballroom. Never a dull moment at the Hawthorne! I love the Tavern especially in the winter when they often have a real, crackling wood fire in the fireplace, which is a rarity these days. When you walk into the lobby, you are transported to an earlier time; it's romantic and upscale. The food in the restaurants is great, and they mix a generous drink. The staff is always kind, polite, and helpful, even during October's chaos. I've been a neighbor of the Hawthorne Hotel for many years, and I'm sending warm congratulations on its 100th anniversary.

Yelp
We did not stay in the hotel, but we had lunch in the hotel bar and restaurant, we ordered three different appetizers, a cocktail, one mocktail, and I loved it! I know a lot of it is the haunted history of the hotel that brought us there, but if ever in Salem again, and there is hotel availability, I would consider staying there. As far as the food goes, it was actually surprisingly very good for how busy they were and I felt bad for our server, she was running around, crazy trying to attend to too many tables.

Yelp
I usually love to stay at the Hawthorne. For dinner we went to Nathaniel's, lovely atmosphere, but the wait time is horrendous!!!Ordered food at 6:30/6:40 ish and it came out at 7:30. Food was just normal, nothing special. Tried to order desert...waited another hour for that. Overall, too expensive and wait time is horrible.

Yelp
I was very excited to try the Truffle fries and boy was I disappointed. And the thing is they are an up charge. Unbelievable. I ordered take out and the chicken sandwich was soggy as they placed the pickle in the take out box unwrapped. Sorry Hawthorne , I may not return

Yelp
Location , location, location! The Hawthorne's location is great! So close to all the main attractions, shops and restaurants. It is a very pretty historic hotel. Staff was amazing and very welcoming! Now,again, this is a historic hotel, that's 100 years old, so you are going to get older carpets, older bathrooms, older aesthetics and of course...the smell of an older building. Not that this is a bad thing, I honestly loved the experience. We stayed for one night, and were able to get an upgrade to the 6th floor(most haunted floor haha) with an amazing view of the Witch Museum.

Yelp
Always great to. Best staff around . It is definitely the best place to stay in Salem . So historic and beautiful.

Yelp
It was a wonderful experience. The food was well thought out. The service was kind and thoughtful. There was great music and singing. The duo, Shy Light, were melodic and delightfully set the mood. They made the experience.

Yelp
Historic hotel in the heart of Salem. Close to the park and in walking distance of attractions. Fresh flowers in the lobby were beautiful! Our room was very small , but a lot of older historic hotels normally have small rooms. The tavern stays open late. Perfect location and old world charm.

Yelp
My wife and I travel extensively for both business and leisure. Having moved to NH last November, we decided to splurge for our anniversary to experience downtown Salem during Halloween season. I've never paid over $600/night for a hotel, but it was centrally located and we could park there. The room was decorated well for its historic nature, and had a nice amount of space. It was well soundproofed despite the crowds and traffic right outside. The bed was comfortable, a critical criteria for us. A few problems however: the phones didn't work - I made the joke about them "going dead" but I had to call reception from my cell to ask for extra towels. The room had to our happiness a Keurig...which to our frustration couldn't make two cups in a row, and after having it replaced...the next one couldn't either. Coffee without interaction is a second criteria. The shower was inconsistent in its temperature; even though at 10am it kept cycling cold and hot on the same setting. A good consistent shower is a third criteria. Finally the WiFi signal kept cycling on and off throughout the day. Finally I just had to give up and use cell signal. When I complained about all these upon checkout to the morning manager (10/26/24), she responded "well no one has complained about these before". No apology. Final criteria: customer service. We should have stayed at the Springhill Suites for half the price, are at the full Marriott for the same price and Ubered in. At least all criteria would have been satisfactory and my status would have ensured customer service. Update since my review: the director of rooms emailed me and was apologetic and I felt honestly wanted to make changes because of my review. I modified the rating from 2 to 3 stars because of the responsive customer service.

Yelp
Friendly and charming hotel in the heart of Salem. The rooms are tiny, but clean and meet the needs if you are just looking for a place to sleep. If you want to explore Salem and witches you really can't get any closer. You are paying the location. The staff was super nice. The addition of being able to use the YMCA is nice for excercise.

Yelp
We recently stayed here for 4 nights on the 6th floor. The lobby was gorgeous and staff were mostly friendly and helpful. We didn't try either of the restaurants. Our room was decent. The first day we were there, there was an unpleasant odor coming from the drains; they sent someone to look at it but all they did was spray an anti-odor product in the bathroom instead of fixing it. When we complained again the second day, they had a plumber check it out and lo and behold, they had to replace a seal on the toilet. Our other complaint was that despite getting down into the 40s at night, they had the A/C on, and when we inquired about getting heat in our room, the lady at the front desk was rather curt about it. However, the super cool thing that happened was, our third night in all of us were awoken by an unearthly shriek that lasted 15-20 seconds at about 4am. No footsteps or pounding or laughing or any other noises to imply someone was playing a prank. Then it happened again in identical fashion 45 minutes later. The next day we discovered several others on the 6th floor had experienced it as well, with no explanation. The front desk folks did know either. I myself am a hard-core skeptic but I cannot rule out the possibility of a paranormal experience. It was interesting and we are still talking about it. All in all, I'd recommend the Hawthorne, especially as they have parking and a fantastic location for walking in any direction.

Yelp
Dirty room: smelly sheets, dilapidated and broken furniture, dirty bed was made up with someone else's hair all over it, broken glass from a wedding. Bad service: very unwelcoming to a plethora of groups of people. Stay anywhere else in Salem and stay safe!

Yelp
This is our second time staying in the Hotel. Both great experiences and we will return for great service, centrally located for Salem wonderings and shopping. Along with the delightfully YUMMY in house restaurant, Tavern on The Green. Tonight we both had Chicken Marsala, a Shaws rustic toasted bread with honey and baked Brie cheese, beer battered onion rings and we were so happy!

Jennifer S.

Yelp
It was such a unique hotel. So beautiful and comfortable. We stayed there while enjoying the Easter buffet with family. I can't wait to go again..

Yelp
The cheese board was a bit disappointing. Lots of bread, grapes (menu said pickled grapes, but they were not) and maybe 3 peices of x-small cheese prices and not on a board, but a dinner plate. I am extremely disappointed as I love the Tavern bar at the Hawthorne Hotel, and this was extremely bad.

Yelp
We stayed there recently for a wedding. The location is in the center of Salem great for walking around and sight seeing. The Bar restaurant has a great vibe with good food and drinks. The main restaurant was short staffed on an October Friday the 13th weekend so the wait was over an hour for a seat for 2 then 45 min for the food after the order was taken Beware when making reservations they wont tell you the 6th floor is reserved for pets. So if people who bring the family dog and allow it to bark all weekend in the room next to you would annoy you make sure to ask for a different floor. I spoke to the front desk multiple times and nothing was done. The building is old and has a cool vibe but with that comes the lack of air conditioning that is controlled by the customer and extremely slow elevators. The single queen room is very small so if you want more space book a double bed room for a few dollars more. When we return to Salem we will check other reviews before booking.

Yelp
They claim that the 3floor and 6 floor is haunted Im in room 509 i have to say no i didnt see any spirits. I never knew it was declared haunted. If my wife knew i know for a fact she would not of booked a room here. Last night at 2am i received a message on my phone that adt alarm was having an issue so i was awake and very sleepy so i roughly went to sleep about 230 245 am. I was dreaming some really insane stuff i was having night tremors i finally woke myself out of fear. I felt lured to the the very big walk in closet that has a window like i had to go. It was very strange feeling. I had this impulse to look out the window for some reason. I didnt see nothing but i felt like someone was with me and wanted me to look out the window and they was sad about what was out the window. Im very sensitive to certain things i force myself not to believe in spiritual things and over and over again im proven there is a spiritual world we live in. I went to the bar had some wine to help me sleep. I will post again about any experience i may have. Im not going to make up some paranoid spooky story but ill tell you this i will only post the truth . I felt something or someones presence in this room Last night so i had a two glasses of wine because i really need to sleep. I really don't want anything to keep me awake i pray nothing cones into my dreams either. There is definitely a presence here but i didn't come here for that nor too right now. I had many encounters even with professionals that look out for spiritual things that give tours but i was just there for the tours because of my wife. I even knew things that the tour guides didn't even expose the guest to. I have went to a guide and told them my feelings and they were in shock on what i had to say and how the heck did i know. when there is absolutely no information anywhere on certain things on tours in another state. Im still in some what in denial because I really don't want believe in the spiritual world and really want to stay away from it. But there are to many coincidences. Not to be true. So here iam in room 509 and im telling you i feel a presence trying to point out something to me or just annoying the heck out of me. I still dont want to believe. If anything happens or anymore weird stuff happens ill post it. But i have a good buzz now so i could sleep i dont want to experience no more stuff i am tired.

Yelp
As I've previously noted within my initial review, it was already mentioned and I've provided a copy of the slip showing the toilet was fixed. The issue is how long it took to be fixed, the inconvenience of having a consistently running toilet, a room with poor electrical supply, bad HVAC, overall cleanliness and the rug separation where it meets at the bathroom is lifting up visibly (tripping hazard). By your (Claire's) response, it's evident the room was not inspected for the items mentioned above and overall customer satisfaction is not a focal point for this hotel. As this review and my email to you was an attempt to rectify the situation and provide a remedied solution, as advised by your front desk staff that would occur, I will be contacting my credit card company to assist further.

Yelp
Great location to experience Salem. The bathroom was a bit small, but that should be expected with an historical building, we were very impressed with how quiet it was. We were expecting to hear a lot of hallway traffic-no noise what so ever. We ate in both restaurants and enjoyed every meal. The staff was so friendly and engaging. We also really enjoyed people watching from the lobby, and we were very surprised to see so many others doing the same-it was like a small cocktail party with total strangers. We loved it!!!

Yelp
OK them four stars only because my room was a little cubicle about 100 ft.² but I absolutely loved the window. I could see the witch museum from my window and I had a really deep tub. I am on the third floor and I slept pretty well, although you can hear the doors shutting every time from all of your neighbors And you could hear pretty much everything that goes on in all the rooms but the ambience is fantabulous and the restaurants are so delicious and the food they're so delicious and they have a music and entertainment. They have a live band that was playing that night. There's just so much going on in this hotel that it makes up for the flaws I would definitely go again except I would ask for a better sized room unless they're all 100 ft.² I don't know? You have to try the seafood chowder it is the best in the world. Also you can walk everywhere from here. Bring comfy shoes.

Yelp
The food here was okay, the gluten free options were not very comprehensive, but the drinks were really good! The environment was super cool, very antique, and the chairs were unbelievably comfortable! It does not get very loud, so it is perfect for someone who gets overstimulated in most bars!

Yelp
great hotel with tons of ambiance, great restaurant and central to all things Salem Mass. Loved our room and the bathtub was fantastic for soaking! We enjoyed our stay.

Yelp
Delicious food, even when busy. Atmosphere is spot on as far as older New England-y Yankee establishments (love the panel, gorgeous drapery, and mahogany furniture. Recommendations: the house pasta, steak, and the cheese board. Wonderful on a Sunday afternoon in the Spring. Salem is lovely throughout the entire year.

Yelp
A really nice hotel in the middle of town. Walking distance to every big attraction. Our room had two queen beds and two bathrooms, which made things super convenient. Private parking lot in the back with in and out was a huge plus. Comfy beds to boot?

Yelp
The Hawthorne Hotel is beautiful and has so much character. It's said to be haunted. For those who want the full Salem experience and easy access to everything, I definitely recommend staying at the Hawthorne. The hotel room I shared with several of my friends was very clean! House keeping was so kind, attentive, and helpful! Their front desk staff was amazing as far as allowing us to keep our bags behind the front desk, as we arrived prior to our room being ready. Don't miss the deets! Being that the hotel dates back to 1925, there were so many cool details within the building. Notice the letter box that runs on each floor. Notice the door knobs, the library downstairs, and the historical art on the walls. I didn't have the opportunity to hit the restaurant/bar downstairs but I'm sure it's worth checking out!

Yelp
A week ago, my husband and I celebrated our one year wedding anniversary at the Hawthorne. Check in was welcoming and informative. Our room was clean, quiet, comfortable. We settled in just fine without any problems whatsoever. Breakfast was a little confusing. The brunch menu had no breakfast options, however our server and the kitchen were very accommodating and whipped up some eggs Benedict's. Dinner was a dream!! Our server Lori made the evening so special for us. My husband surprised me with a new wedding band which she delivered to me with dessert. The food was spectacular, our table was perfectly tucked away in the back with gorgeous live piano, Lori took amazing care of us and all in all it was a perfect anniversary. We will be returning!

Yelp
We have stayed here before and the experience was pleasant, but not this time! I booked a 3 night stay for Thanksgiving in August, and assuredly asked for one of the 50 or so rooms "not facing a road, an inside room". - We did not get an inside room but one that felt and sounded like a Brooklyn Apt. on Flatbush Ave. NOISY! Essex St. is a main St. w/diesel truck noise stopping and starting at the light. Avoid! - When asked why we got this accommodation I was told by asst. manager that "I could not be made happy" as she walked away. Correct, not with ANY noisy room offered. Avalanche of attitude at the front desk as well. - Room was shabby, dirty and cheaply renovated, especially considering the Ritz Carlton pricing! Please see pictures. - Manager Claire did not return my emails during stay, still hasn't, and gave me an intentional icy stare on Thanksgivng Day as she greeted others with a smile. I believe the hotel management has a case of haughty overconfidence and their business will likely be superseded by other well run high end offerings in Salem if managed this way for much longer. I hope The Hawthorne Hotel management does begin to recognize it's arrogance somehow. The venue itself deserves better! Much of the staff (not mgt.) is clearly hard working. Have a drink in the bar and stay elsewhere, for now...

Yelp
We were here for the Halloween weekend. The first thing I want to say is that I realize this is one of the busiest times of the year. But that is not an excuse for the poor stay. We were supposed to have a "traditional queen room". The room had a twin size bed, no dresser to put our clothes in, and no hangers in the closet. The thermostat would not go any lower than 73 degrees; which is uncomfortable for us to sleep at, and it was too loud outside due to the parties for us the keep the window open. Housekeeping was terrible. They did not clean the floors, sink, or tub. We had to ask for clean towels the 3rd night of our stay. For the price we paid, I wish we had stayed at the Hampton Inn down the street and been comfortable.

Yelp
We've been coming to Salem for many years and finally got to stay at the a Hawthorne Hotel! Our room was a double queen suite and spacious on the famous 6th floor! The first night my teenage daughters asked to go down and explore the lobby while I took a much needed nap. My daughters closed the door to our room and when I woke up about an hour later my door was open! Talk about being spooked! I went to the lobby where I encountered another guest who was having a hard time getting her beautiful Newfoundland dog into the elevator and the dog refused to go up the stairs as well. She finally got her dog up with the help of the front desk staff. The staff here are all so accommodating. One of the housekeepers (Betania) asked us did we need anything at all from towels or soaps... so very kind and nice of her. Our beds were comfortable and the only thing I can say is that our bathroom was tiny but that's ok. On the ride to Salem my car sensor came on saying my tire pressure was low. I asked Brynn from front desk where I could take my car and she directed me to a local BP service station and they didn't even charge me to check my tires and sensor. I must also add that the Hawthorne Hotel has amazing staff that are incredibly friendly and helpful! We really enjoyed talking to Taylor, Brynn, to name a few! Can't wait to stay here again! I'm so glad we got to stay at this historical hotel. We loved every minute of it! Off peak prices are so worth it! We will definitely return!

Yelp
PROS: There were many! Food was good, staff was nice, they had amenities like a bar, ballroom, gym, restaurant, fancy lobby, free wifi, and they were located in the center of town. They also allow dogs and provide a meal plan for your breakfast. They also have two parking lots that they let you park in. CONS: They nickel and dime you when it comes to their food. They'll give you a main course but every side or topping you want is an extra dollar or so. ALSO, AND THIS ONE IS BIG....They are the first hotel I've ever been to that does not offer maid service every day. They let them come every other day unless you request it. Meanwhile I have not seen or read anywhere that, that was the policy. OVERALL: This is definitely the best hotel to stay in. They even have two haunted rooms, experience in the movie "Bewitch", and nice rooms. Just make sure you request your room cleaned.....every day

Yelp
We ate in the tavern of this hotel and it was the most delicious meal during our trip. The drinks were decadent, our pretzel app melted in our mouths, fresh salads, and a bacon Brie and fig jam burger cooked perfectly. We loved all the oversized comfy chairs to sit in and our waitress was very attentive and kind. I very much want to go back, and the experience made me want to stay at this hotel. We gotta thank our trolley tour guide for mentioning this place for lunch!

Yelp
This is my second time calling for our reservation. The first lady named paula was rude. Someone named byrnn answered when my daughter called. I'm not sure whats going on here but I did book weeks in advance for her graduation to stay at this hotel. I have the email it was canceled. I saw on facebook about a racist incident concerning people of color and they are not welcome at the hawthorne. I assume it's true since I am native American. It's fine we stayed in peabody. I guess some places are white only.

Yelp
Guess beware!!! The hotel is on a one pipe system so the ac will not work at night. We turn on the ac and got heat instead. The room got to 92 so we turn off the system and open the windows.... This ruined our stay. Once I expressed my concerns they told me about the ac issue. It would be nice to know before we stayed. They did not offer a discount. The rooms are over priced.

Yelp
Loved our stay here! Deluxe room was comfortable and spacious. Staff was kind and welcoming. Restaurants on site were great and you can't beat this location; you can walk to EVERYTHING in Salem from here. Also this building is a historic landmark!

Yelp
Before you stay here just know It's a very old hotel. This hotel doesn't have a lot of modern features as a normal hotel would have. You can't judge this hotel on all of those things. If you book this hotel you are booking it for the history and to really feel that old scary Salem aroma. The staff here are very friendly and knowledgeable of Salem. If you haven't stayed here and want to experience Salem definitely stay here. Both restaurants inside of the hotel are also very delicious. It's within walking distance of almost everything. I would suggest if you are staying in the fall bring a fan because the AC will be turned off for the season.

Yelp
Overall fun and well located central place to stay in Salem. Easily walkable to everything you'd want to see. We didn't eat here but we did hang out at the bar. The bartender was amazing and had been there forever. We met so many nice people at the bar and just had a great time. Super friendly hotel staff. Room was clean and really really same (we slept with the chandelier on dim it was so dark ). Definitely would go back. Love the historical aspect of the hotel as well.

Yelp
Visiting from California: We got a room on Expedia, and were placed on the 6th floor. This hotel is in a prime location, and if you're a tourist, you really can't get any better. We easily walked to all of the museums and attractions. I get grossed out by human hair that's not mine, and as you can see by the photos, there were far too many dark hairs in our bathroom upon check in. I've stayed at other places during Covid (albeit corporate hotels, though I prefer to frequent small ones like this one); however, the housekeeping staff needs to do better. It's visible to the eye and who knows what's on the carpet. Didn't eat at restaurant(s), but front desk staff was very friendly. Would love to have given this place 5 stars - book for the location.

Yelp
Charming historic hotel in downtown Salem. The rooms were nice, clean, and the food at Nathaniel's was excellent! Great position around the tourist spots. We walked everywhere and had a great time! Highly recommend.

Yelp
Went there for dinner. I walked over to the Tavern side and was seated in Nathanials. It smelled like urine. I also asked to move but I didn't. Service was nice but slow. I got the nachos and they were good.

Yelp
I am not sure how to think of my stay at Hawthorne. I reserved a specific room and paid a premium for it. Upon check-in, I found out they "upgraded" my reservation to a ridiculously larger room since the one I reserved was being renovated. Except I don't consider the room an upgrade at all. They should have sent me an email notifying me. I would have been more happy with a "downgrade" - into a more intimate space. Otherwise, my experience has been fine. I like the quirkiness of it and staying in a place that was a premium hotel in the early 20th century. The parking is easy and ample. Everything is in walking distance - from Seven Gables all the way to the Witch House. My experience with how they handled the room was devastating, however, and will keep me from using this hotel next time I visit Salem.

Yelp
Highly recommend this hotel. I've never been to a place like this. At first I thought my room was small (I think they called it economy), but I loved it! Little pricey, but no complaints. I would definitely stay here again. Tyler at the front desk, as well as his staff, were top notch. They helped us with recommendations and getting places. They would remember us the next day and ask how things were with the recommendations. Nathaniel's Restaurant wasn't 100% on service on one of the two days, but I'd be back. Hotel was wonderful! Tip: Call even if it doesn't show availability. They may have some.

Yelp
Was so happy to snag a room in this beautiful, historic hotel for the Salems So Sweet festival this past weekend! Every time we visit Salem we make sure to eat in the Tavern downstairs, but we've never actually stayed here. What a treat; the staff is so kind and welcoming, the rooms are beautiful, and the beds are super comfy! Head's up, the bathrooms are a little tight if you're tall, but that's very typical of a historic hotel, and that's no one's fault. Room and bathroom were both really clean and well-lit. Centrally located for all the fun, we can't wait to return-and we definitely will!

Yelp
Spent most of the week here with my company for our meeting. All the rooms are so cozy and inviting, like going to Grandma's house. My favorite room (besides my bedroom) is the library downstairs where we ate many of our meals. Food and service were great at all turns. Room was always freshened up quickly and staff taking care of us were excellent. The thermostat in my room is finicky, but this is to be expected in an older house. I just turned off the heater and opened a window. The fitness room could use updating as it only has an older treadmill and stationary bike. It could use some better weights, too. The lobby is beautifully decorated and I saw lots of people all week who sat on the couches, talking and catching up. I even met a lady who lives down the street who likes to stop by with her 2 cute pups because they get treats when they come to the hotel! Love this!
