Heading East Bar & Grill

We have been to the island 6 times and this was our first time eating at Heading East. The food was great. One of the few places you can get more local fare. I had the snapper and my wife had the stewed chicken. Our kids had the pasta alfredo.

Best food on the island. Both the saltfish and stewed chicken were incredible. It also introduced me to Alvin's hot sauce which was very good on the chicken. Season rice is the way to go, and can't beat a good crusty mac and cheese, though all the other sides are fantastic.

I stopped by this restaurant on my way from Trunk Bay Beach because a guy at a gas station referred me. At about 7:55pm I parked across the street from the establishment and walked towards the location, which had good music playing. Once there i looked at the menu placed on the wall and tried to figure out if it was still serving food but couldnt tell since no one was behind the counter. A man sitting on a high chair told me that they still were taking orders and pointed to two Hispanic females and said ,"they work here and will take your order",. One of the Hispanic females passed me by and I called her ,' M'am, Hello,". She turned around and said oh no im not taking your order (in an annoyed manner) and turner back around. I was a bit taken aback because she clearly didn't want to take my order. I would not recommend any of my friends or family here. No thank you. Management needs to train her in customer service. Another restaurant can earn my money.

We were clearly the only new people there, all the locals know that this is the place to go for good food. You walk up, go to the large whiteboard with the menu, place your order, choose a place to sit down. We got curry, chicken, shrimp as entrées. For sides, we got rice, red beans, scalloped potatoes, mac & cheese, salad. The juice was also delicious! They ran out of passionfruit juice so I got tamarind. It was amazing! There’s also a full bar for drinks.

Very delicious food in a relaxed setting. The chicken and the goat, both excellent dishes. Painkiller is a good mix! Been here for the first but not for the last time! Thank you!

We had a wonderful meal at Heading East ! I had the sautéed shrimp and it was cooked perfectly. My husband had the fresh caught fish of the day and said it was delicious. Our server was very friendly and helpful. Definitely one of the best meals we have had on St John. Will definitely return on our next visit .

Tasty Caribbean food, the Mac and cheese and plantain sides were solid. The curry chicken wasn’t very good but the shrimp was great. Service is ok, they don’t speak English very well.

Friendly staff. Food is fantastic. We ended up paying ~ $170 for 4 people. We each got an entree and 3 sides, and my husband and I got the fresh fish catch of the day - so the most expensive thing on the menu. And drinks and stuff. Definitely worth it. Everything was so delicious.

By far our favorite spot on St. John for authentic, incredible local food! Everything is wonderful, but the true stars of the menu are the entrees with sides. The buttered conch is a must if it's on the menu- big chunks of tender conch braised to perfection. The oxtails are also spectacular - braised to melting tenderness with a rich, deeply flavored sauce. The mutton gets a similar treatment with a long braise and is also just wonderful. The generously portioned sides are excellent and cooked to perfection- our favorites are the okra, beans, and mac and cheese. Don't miss this amazing casual outdoor spot with friendly service - perfect for dinner after catching the sunset at the nearby Windmill. And, the beer is ice cold! It's not fancy, but it's THE BEST on the island for local cuisine. We go at least twice every time we're here, last trip we went three times in a week!

Authentic cuisine. Not as good as the places I am used to in the Bronx or New York City. My friends complained the entire time. Seating available at picnic tables outdoors. Restroom available on property. Kitchen is open air style. 2 stars because I got a tummy ache & everyone was mad I brought them here. Small parking lot, right before truck yard for parking.

When you think of an island shack hangout with food, this is it. The food was great, prices were reasonable, and portions were large. The staff were very polite and the locals definitely hangout here often.

The open air covered seating is great. The fried fish was amazing, the service was horrible. There were only two other couples at the restaurant, our server didn't speak english, she was barely able to take our order, no one behind the bar attempted to assist her, she didn't know what a painkiller was.... Never checked on us once during our meal. We had to wave her down to bring us the check. This place was recommended to us by a local. Maybe they are training new staff, but I suggest you spend $100 on a meal somewhere else.

A local brought us here for lunch before heading to Trunk Bay. My friend and I shared the BBQ ribs plate. Our companions had the oxtail plates. Excellent food. Great location.

The food here was delicious, the staff was friendly and the vibe was of a local chill and hang out spot. I hope when we return they are more established.

Was suggested by our boat captain. Easily one of top meals I have had in St. John and the one that gets the honor of being a repeat meal. EVERYTHING is delicious

Eat here, seriously. We just finished the Reef Bay sugar mill hike and the food here plus an ice cold corona exceeded expectations. The food was absolutely delicious and the portion sizes were great. I personally recommend the stew chicken. 10/10

The best food and the best pina coladas on the island. My husband suggested this open air resturant and bar. We ended up here twice during our short vacation because it was that good. He ordered the oxtail and I had the steamed fish both times with sides of lentils, rice, potato salad, coleslaw. You must also have the fresh juices available. They will kindly add a shot of rum if you ask. The pina coladas are fresh and so good. Listening to Bob Marley and enjoying the freshest most flavorful local food was absolute heaven.

BEST FOOD WE'VE HAD ALL WEEK! WELL SEASONED, FLAVORFUL, WITH LOVELY SERVICE BY KIND AND WELCOMING OWNER AND FAMILY- HANDS DOWN BEST MEAL ALL TRIP!!!! We had seafood pasta (MASSIVE Pieces of LOBSTER inside), and four local fish with THREE SIDE DISHES for each entree . Soo good, super reasonable prices, LOCAL AND FAMILY OWNED, I'm super bummed I didn't find this gem the first day but will be v happy if others discover this family friendly outdoor place! Very relaxed atmosphere, tables with dominoes to play with and just the friendliest and most helpful people!!

If you're on St. john and are looking for good authentic local food, this is the place to go. I had it recommended to me by multiple locals so i made sure to stop in one rainy night for dinner. the restaurant is al fresco, so dress accordingly. however, they do have covered tables and a covered bar area. i got the oxtail and it was a great portion, even better flavor. the sauces they provide are locally produced and go amazing with all the dishes. definitely stop in if you are looking for a good local bite!

Most authentic tand flavorful food on the island! Delicious local cuisine ! We tried the oxtail and mutton shrimp and ribs! Everything was delicious !

Our group of four ordered for different dishes and 8 different sides , and all of the food was delicious. The seasoned rice was amazing, the salty fish was very tasty and perfect to top n the tostones.

Amazing experience! We were looking for local food and found the perfect spot! Highly recommend if you want to enjoy local cuisine.
