On the Grid : Heartbeat House

"Try and walk by Heartbeat House without wanting to go in and join… the energy is palpable every time we stroll by. They do an amazing job offering classes for everyone no matter age or ability level in this health oriented, community studio. Just about everyone who walks by the class schedule wants to sign up for the Bollywood Dance Workout, which we can attest is “sooooo fun”. You’ve probably been to a yoga studio, but have you taken Yoga Booty Ballet? No? Do yourself a favor and get on the Heartbeat House level, friends." - Brains on Fire

Heartbeat House is a truly special studio. I love the diversity in the classes and members. Everyone who works and attends the studio is so sweet. They hold a very welcoming space that is free of judgement and full of joy. Whether you're looking for yoga, cardio, pilates, ballet, zumba, modern... I highly recommend ALL of their classes!

Google
Great place. Lots of different classes and wonderful instructors. Good place to strengthen or heal. An oasis.

Google
The good. The studio is located in a nice, quiet out of the way part of Culver City and there's good parking. Nina and Tors's dance classes were great and fun. I will probably come here on a single class basis because it's relatively close to where I live. I got a break on my first class so that was nice. I may even try out a class during the week so I can fairly judge whether there are classes that really teach you how to dance, versus those that offer group exercising.

Google
Heartbeat House is an incredible place to dance! I have been enjoying this studio and its teachers for more than a decade. The studio culture is welcoming and very laid-back, the owner Kumbi is always so warm and receptive, and Heartbeat House truly offers dance classes that you will not experience at a gym. I always feel comfortable dancing my heart out and achieve an awesome workout. I drive from Pasadena to Atwater Village for the wonderful teachers and inviting atmosphere – it's that great! Try a class and see for yourself – dancing will uplift your spirits!

A true gem. Wonderful space with great classes and friendly instructors. Makes my life better every week. Long live Heartbeat House!

What was once a joyous place to practice fitness is now discriminatory and hypocritical. If you say you are inclusive, please stop excluding innocent people.

Love taking my kids here! They love it. Great teachers!

Yelp
editing this review because It seems I have misplaced my anger. classes I've taken at the past here are great. I have gone a couple times in the past and the Instructors are kind and do a good job getting you to work up a good sweat. unfortunately I couldn't make one of my last classes due to the fire and wind / road conditions and was charged by classpass. note: ClassPass unfortunately sucks on the other hand. and will charge you even in disaster / emergency times.

Yelp
I actually do not know how things are these days, but there is a new owner who reached out to me with the nicest letter offering to do whatever she could to make up for my unfortunate experience. The new owner sounds responsible, respectful and genuinely interested in providing a great experience for her clients. The studio is too far away for me and I don't think that my teacher is there anymore, so I probably will not be there any time soon, but I hope that someone tries it and tells us about any changes so that I can delete the original post.

Yelp
I took part in a community service event here. They were so kind to open their studio to us. It was a super cute place and the classes they offered also sounded really good.

Yelp
This place saved me after I felt depressed and out of shape post-pandemic. I did the trial run because I'm always reluctant to go all in on gym memberships. I've always got my guard up, hyper aware of that cult like/judgy atmosphere that some gyms emanate. I've now been a member for a little over a year and I love it so much. It's become my safe place. I discovered I loved dance classes and pilates the most! Kait, the owner is so incredibly knowledgable and kind. As a member you can do 1:1 sessions once a month to target your personal pains/weaknesses. I did ONE session with her and we were able to figure out some areas of my body I needed to give more attention to in order to keep lower back pain at bay. Again, after ONE session, I knew what to do at home and its helped my back so much like I cannot thank her enough. This place is great for anyone who wants to ease back into fitness to reach new goals. I always leave feeling so motivated and most importantly, I always feel safe and supported.

Yelp
Since moving to the neighborhood, I have been looking for some light, fun, adult dance classes. I came upon Heartbeat House on yelp and gave it a try. They have a "try out" session of $44 for 11 days of classes (a steal if you ask me). So I tried out 4 classes. The Balletic Bare class, two Yoga Booty Ballet classes and the Cardio Disco. All of the classes were so enjoyable and light. You definitely got your heart rate up, but in a fun, easy going environment. All of the teachers were so nice and kind. I have now going their membership, and absolutely love it. 10/10 recommend.

Yelp
I have been coming to Heartbeat House for over a decade and I am consistently grateful for the positive, uplifting, but nonetheless challenging classes that they offer. Their new location is peaceful and well-designed, and the instruction is top-notch. Kumbi is a fantastic teacher: she knows when to encourage and when to push, and she paces her class for maximum benefit for all of her students. Heartbeat House is a real gem-- a place that cultivates community as well as good health.

Yelp
I've been going to Heartbeat House on and off since 2013 and am so grateful they offered so many classes online during COVID. Their instructors are so talented, enthusiastic and positive, I feel amazing after every class. I've tried everything from ballet to yoga booty ballet, flamenco to pilates... and a number of specialty workshops. I've been to so so many studios, but Heartbeat has a magic I can't find anywhere else.

Yelp
I generally take shit care of my body, but once in a while, I get into fitness mode. I'm in one of these phases now, hoping it'll stick this time, even though my record does not inspire confidence. Back in 2015, when I lived in Los Feliz, my friend June K. turned me onto an exercise class called Yoga Booty Ballet, and for around six weeks, I kept up with it, going to Heartbeat House every Monday night. Then one Monday night, I didn't go, and I haven't been back in two years. I do like Heartbeat House. It's a friendly little yoga/pilates/dance studio on the main commercial stretch of Atwater Village, a short drive from my old place. I know a lot of people come here from all over the Eastside and beyond--one of my friends lives nowhere nearby and has been taking zumba classes here for years. It's a plain space, just one big mirrored room, ideal for a dance class except for the glass wall looking onto the street. I always tried to stand as far from the entrance as possible. There were all kinds of classes available, and several different class/membership packages. I think I got like a cheap first class and then bought a bundle of ten Yoga Booty Ballet classes. Sign-in was easy, though that narrow corridor of a waiting area was kind of cramped. We tried to arrive at least a few minutes before each class so we could get through the sign-in and find a good spot in the room (see above, re: distance from windows). So, Yoga Booty Ballet: it is about as ridiculous as it sounds, an exercise class based on yoga and dance, with a lot of affirmations and new agey frills. There was one number where we all played patty-cake and then held hands in a circle and pranced like we were maidens running around a maypole--if there were video of me doing this dance, I would pay a lot of money and maybe kill to have it burned. But Yoga Booty Ballet was also a good work-out and a fun, judgment-free class that got me motivated to leave the house and exercise, albeit for a short period of time. Our teacher was great (I think her name was Kristen?), though unfortunately I don't think she's there anymore. She was extremely cheerful and positive, and she finished each class with a sound bath, speaking softly at us while she played her crystal singing bowls. I now live a good 20- to 30-minute drive from Heartbeat House, so chances are low that I'll make a triumphant Yoga Booty Ballet comeback. My class package is also long expired. I didn't know when I bought it that I'd have to use all ten classes within six months of purchase--a somewhat obnoxious policy that basically ensured I'd never come back once I hit a lull. That said, I had a good time here while it lasted and would recommend this place if you're looking to take some fun classes in the area. I have fond, embarrassing memories of Yoga Booty Ballet.

Yelp
I think my expectations were a bit high after reading all of these reviews. However, I just didn't get the same vibe as others when I went. I did the new student deal, then purchased a package - I wish someone would have shown me how to check in, where towels are, whether there was a shower (I eventually found it, but does anyone use it? Is there a limit to time in it?) Most instructors are great - I have tried 5 different ones now. Enjoy the vibe of Dance For Your Life and UJam A LOT! However, others like MUEV8 are packed and even if you get there early, the instructor sometimes places people in front of you so you cannot check yourself in the mirror. (I tried it twice, Last time, she put her sister in front of me. Sigh.) Also, the more popular classes like Muev8 are a bit cliquey and RIDICULOUSLY crowded with people who know each other and apparently have been practicing the routines for years. Good luck not stepping into your classmates or being slapped when the whole room knows to twirl around except you. I enjoyed the classes but truly think that if each instructor would look out more for new people, explain the class, and perhaps, just have the person at the front desk say HELLO and make sure you have checked in (you basically just check in online then sit down in the lobby and no one checks if you have really paid for the class - these small things would go a long way towards a 5 star review.

Yelp
On a fun strip of Glendale Blvd with all sorts of cool little coffee shops and restaurants, Heartbeat House offers an array of dance classes and it's only $5 for your first class and any class you take for the first week. What a bargain! They only have one studio room, but it's big and spacious and they have clean towels and weights so you don't need to bring your own. The instructors are friendly and cheerful and the clientele is pretty down to earth, regular folks so you don't feel like a dork if you get a move wrong or don't show up in the latest work out fashion.

Yelp
I've been coming to Heartbeat House since 2013, and regularly take Kumbi's yoga classes. She is my favorite yoga teacher! I've attended other studios as well over the years, but I keep coming back to classes at HBH because the environment is so positive. I've also really loved Anna and Brandon's yoga classes, and enjoy HIIT, YBB, beginning ballet, and Zumba too. I love the community aspect to Heartbeat House. If you want to support local, POC, woman-owned business, that attracts a diverse clientele, this is your spot! Classes are streaming for now, but I can't wait to get back in the studio post-COVID!

Yelp
I love this place! I've taken African dance with Jessica on Sundays a couple of times and her class is amazing! You will SWEAT. You will be DRENCHED head to toe. And it feels SO GOOD. I especially love that with every class there's a message and every movement has a meaning. The combos are so much fun to learn and even if you have trouble just shake it off and keep it movin. I wish I lived a little closer because then I'd take classes more often. LOVE HEARTBEAT HOUSE!!!!

Yelp
Love heartbeat house, my 2 year old daughter does ballet with Ms. Harriet and loves it so much! Ms. Harriet is super patient with all the kids in the class and makes sure they don't get left out while still teaching the class. No clue how she does it all. It's been so fun to watch my daughters confidence grow and watch her learn new dance moves. My husband even took a workshop class on lower back, knee and hip pain and got so much out of it!

Yelp
We LOVE Heartbeat House!!! My 3 year old takes Toddler Ballet and Miss Alessia is AMAZING. My daughter loves this class so much. It's a sweet neighborhood spot that's fun, affordable and has so many offerings!

Yelp
I'm a big fan of Zumba. It's a good way to get some exercise in without feeling like a gym rat. A good way to "ditch the workout and join the party", indeed. I was looking for a good Zumba instructor and found Shawnee Rioles. She is talented. (Link - http://shawnee1.zumba.com/) The only reason I'm rating this as 4 stars is because the dance floor at the studio is a little worn out. Special: $5 per class for the first 7 days for locals $16 drop in Other pricing packages listed on their website Tip: You can also book classes on the MindBody app for convenience. Street parking is $1 an hour. ENJOY!

Yelp
I love this studio so much! The owner and the teachers are just fantastic. Super community oriented and non competitive studio which is so rare, combined with amazingly skilled teachers that sincerely care about their students. I have to offer a deep bow of gratitude to Alessia Bonacci-- her 'Dance for Your Life' and Bollywood aerobics classes absolutely saved my life during the pandemic. She is not only a highly skilled professional dancer and teacher but a sincere and uplifting person who really cares about her students and the community. She follows up on a personal level and makes sure everyone feels included, welcome and invested in their mental and physical wellbeing through dance, movement and intentional mindsets. I made it through the pandemic because of her teaching and energy and have met amazing people through her classes and through this studio. My niece was even able to take Alessia's livestream kids ballet classes all through the pandemic which literally saved her from morphing into some kind of combination cartoon cookie child since she consumed so much of both throughout covid when not ballet-ing. Thank you Alessia for saving the children! I also love Kumbee and Laura's HIIT and yoga classes and all the teachers. The studio is affordable and accessible and welcoming to students of all ages, I can't say enough good things about what these teachers have collectively built and given to the community. Miao.

Yelp
Cannot say enough wonderful Things about heartbeat house! The owner and her family are amazing. And the variety of classes she has is phenomenal! They keep a family environment here. And kumbi is all about community. Lifting people up to their full potential. How can you not want to be apart of that?

Yelp
I just moved into the neighborhood and for the last month I've walked by this place with high hopes of meeting new friends and getting my sweat on. So I finally went in to get some information on classes. The person at the front desk was extremely rude when I asked about class sizes and then told me to go online for more info. The Zumba class I witnessed looked really basic and the instructor pretty much phoned it in. He actually checked his phone twice during the 10 min I was there. DURING THE CLASS. Sad to say not my new exercise spot in my neighborhood.

Carla R.

Yelp
I am so grateful to have this place in the neighborhood. It creates such a warm sense of community. You will feel comfortable moving your body no matter what your skill level is.

Yelp
I've taken a few classes here: Bollywood, Zumba, Yoga Booty Ballet, and a candlelight yoga class. All of the instructors are great, it's a friendly environment and a cute little studio. The sound system is good. I just wasn't feeling the format of the yoga booty ballet, so I only took it once, but that's just personal taste. The Bollywood instructor is really great. I bring my own mat for yoga and the floors were clean enough when I was there, so I didn't have any of the cleanliness issues that other people mentioned. They started offering some kids classes, which is nice, but they are mainly for ages 5-9. It's so hard to find yoga and dance classes for the 10-14 age group, it would be great if they are able to expand their kids program.

Yelp
I'm kind of a clumsy dork. Uncoordinated. However, I love to dance. But having tired of doing Wii dance games at home & wanting to involve myself in an exercise regime that was fun AND burned alot of calories, I did a yelp search of the best places to take dance / zumba classes & HBH was a perfect fit - it rated very high on Yelp, was both close to home & affordable. For the first week of classes, one can take any class for only $5! I tried as many classes as I could that 1st week & found all of the classes really fun. I started out in the back of the class, but soon found that no one was pointing & laughing, so I moved to the front of the class so I can better watch the teacher's moves. There are students of every level of coordination - a handful of really sexy, young, dancers (jealous/hate 'em) & some like me - older, huffing & puffing not getting the steps right. However no one pretends to notice - it's all good. Like I said, I really liked all the classes I tried,..but I really love the Zumba classes with Shawnee & The U Jam Fitness with Jared! I've done the Zumba DVDs & Zumba Wii dance game to death & far prefer going to a live class where I burn twice as many calories as working out at home. Shawnee & Jared are just wonderful instructors, I always catch myself smiling or laughing at myself, because while I may be the only 1 stumbling around, it's so much fun. (Shawnee is in the Zumba Exhilarate DVD & I point her out & brag that she's my instructor) I can't say enough about the classes there - those classes would alone keep on going to the HBH! The class however that is the most crowded, has the most loyal students & gets me the most disgustingly sweaty is JP's Latin Jam class. JP apparently was THE zumba instructor at one time (on U-tube you can see him performing) & then within the last couple of years JP started Latin Jam, which another student at HBH described to me as "zumba on steroids"!! I love it! Some of the moves are tough, but the music is awesome, sexy Latin music mixed with techo, hip-hop - similar to zumba music. There are few breaks in JP's class, and the moves are more physically difficult. (JP is also a salsa instructor & it shows) My body is physically incapable of performing some of his moves, however, it still feels like dancing & is so much FUN, I'm really addicted to it! I just wish JP taught more often at HBH. :( I wear a heart rate monitor in class (I'm the only one -geek). But I love to see how hard I'm working & in JP's class I burn the most amount of calories, more than I do in the Zumba classes - usually more than 500! (Once I misread my heart-rate monitor & thought I burned a 1,000, posted that on Facebook, only to realize I was working my heart rate monitor incorrectly :( .....But 500 is still good. I read that to lose weight you need only a deficit of 500 calories, so I'm still happy that I burn that much. In comparison I burn only 150 for an hour of Zumba when done at home! LOSING WEIGHT: I met one young lady in JP's class (she goes to Shawnee's Zumba class too) who has been coming to class for a year & has lost almost 40 pounds! I spoke to one Zumba instructor & she also shared she lost a lot of weight, 25 lbs when she started doing Zumba, just by going to classes 3-4 times a week. Dance =Lose weight - brilliant! COST: True, HBH is more expensive than joining 24 Hr Fitness, but you can't get the type of motivating instructors there. After the 1st week, (excluding your b-day week when ea. class is $5 too!) each class will cost $15 BUT if you buy a package, you can reduce the price. Obviously, the bigger package you buy, the better deal you get. There is a package that for $150, you 'll get unlimited classes for a month! They're very nice & helpful at HBH; so ask & they'll suggest a good plan for u. Thanks Kumbi!!! PARKING: I'm lazy, so I park at one of the metered spaces on Glendale Blvd in front of HBH. The more economical option is to park on 1 of the side streets for free. The HBH is in a trendy safe area in Atwater Village close to many awesome restaurants and a very good wine bar, where you can go to balance out all the calories you've just burned. CONS: Like I said, HBH is not the cheapest way to go, so if you are pinching pennies you might try 24 Hr. Fitness (with a Costco membership u can become a member for very little). Another thing that kinda bugs me is that it can get really crowded in JP's & Shawnee's class. This is not a reason to not go, BUT I find it REALLY annoying to get there early & to have someone come in late & push themselves into a choice space in the front by the instructor, pushing me over to the side away from the air-conditioning :( I'd love a rule that no one should be able to get into class if more than 5 minutes late, but that 's just grumpy me. I get the same way if I don't get enough to eat.

Yelp
This is my happy place. Not pretentious, good vibes, great teachers and it's more than just dance for your body, it's for your soul. So happy I found Heartbeat house. It feels like a community. LA drives me crazy but this place grounds me and brings me joy!

Yelp
Class: Beginning Ballet & Floor Barre Parking: Street parking. It was okay, bearable. Location: In a fun part of Silver Lake. Go ahead and run errands or grab something to eat afterwards. The studio has a bathroom/changing room with a shower. I noticed a big puddle on the floor when I was there (after someone took a shower?) Eww. Level: I took this class when I wanted to start ballet up again. I found the class pretty beginner friendly, you can even consider it an intro level ballet class. If you compare it to beginning ballet at Ballet Bodies or Barboza Method, this was even more beginner friendly and casual than those. If you've always wanted to try ballet as an adult, but were too intimated to take a beginning ballet classes filled with people who have been dancing for a while; well, this class is for you. Also, the instructor has a super sweet personality, and is helpful without putting the spotlight on you (she also teaches at dance at Pilates and Arts) Structure: Like the title of the class, it doesn't follow the structure of a traditional ballet class. I've never done a lot of ballet sequences on laying on the ground (helpful in turnout practice), so that was something different and unusual. If you are looking for a more traditional ballet approach, with center practice, this place might not work as well (there is an intermediate class at this studio; but I haven't taken it).

Yelp
Kristen Huffman's Yoga Booty Ballet class changed my life! Kristen and all the YBB regulars are so welcoming. There are women of all different shapes and sizes in Kristen's class. Lots of different ages too--from teenage girls to grandmas alike. There is a big emphasis on the class being NON-COMPETITIVE. I've never sweated so hard with such a big smile on my face during a workout before. Sometimes I even giggle during some of the moves (The Pony to a Katy Perry song, anyone?!) The first time Kristen walked in the room, I couldn't believe she was the instructor. She seriously has the energy of a quirky 80s pop star--like someone from the Bangles or Go-Gos's who is beautiful and talented but cool and smart enough to play their own instrument in addition to having THAT LOOK. I couldn't believe this woman who literally had a GLOW to her was going to lead our sweaty and barefoot class. And I couldn't believe someone who had that glow would be THAT NICE. I'm pretty sure Kristen hugged me even though I was drenched in sweat after my first class. At some point after I became a regular, I hurt my back lifting something at work and Kristen offered to help me with some free restorative yoga! I didn't take her up on the offer, mostly because I was embarrassed of my messy apartment, BUT KRISTEN IS THAT NICE! Kristen totally makes everyone in the class feel special. She isn't an instructor who makes you feel like you're in Boot Camp and yells at you. However, YBB is such a hard workout despite it's deceptive charm of being more fun than work. YBB is a blast. It's like a dance party slumber party version of everything you could ever want at the gym. A dance party slumber party that has you exhausted and dripping sweat and sucking down every last ounce of what's in your water bottle! YBB is hard work and it took me a few classes to learn most of the moves, but even when I was having a rough day, I just modified some of the moves and allowed myself just to dance lightly and have fun. Anyone can do YBB. Kristen picks music so great, I almost think she was a DJ in a past life! At least once a month there are live drums for no extra cost, which is a pretty awesome class addition. I pretty much never thought I would find a place to dance barefoot to Britney Spears with LIVE DRUM ACCOMPANINMENT and there I was doing so in Atwater Village on a weeknight Because all my friends knew how much I hated exercising and going to the gym and then saw my absolute devotion to Kristen's YBB class, they pretty much one-by-one came to check out YBB with me at some point. Kristen constantly was amazed by my YBB-posse. 9 out 10 of my friends kept going on their own without me. I had a hellish work commute from Venice to Silver Lake and YBB with Kristen was often the light at the end of my workday tunnel. There just aren't a lot of outlets to just DANCE to good music in a room full of smart, creative, inspiring women and YBB was my special weekly or twice a week outlet for that. I know so many of the women were smart, creative, and inspiring because at the beginning of class, people were encouraged to share what areas of their life they needed support in or any good news they wanted to pass on to the class. I witnessed classmates get book/publishing deals, land their dream jobs, move away internationally (Kristen had one of these people Skype into class at least once while I was there!) and just share a lot of really really positive energy with one another. There is such good energy in this class. The YBB class is pretty much my favorite dance class in the world. I left L.A. last year to follow my dream of getting a master's degree elsewhere and guess what? My friends who I introduced to YBB are still going without me--even the ones who live all the way in the Valley make the commute. My friends in other cities are still telling me they want to try YBB someday and when I visited L.A. this year, I had so many people I wanted to see and things I wanted to do, but I still made time to go to YBB with Kristen. It was so much fun! Because of how much I adored this class, I have been inspired to stay healthy and fit. Even though there's nothing close to YBB in my new home of Tucson, Arizona (trust me, I've looked)--I still dance around my house to Kristen's YBB Spotify playlists, I go to the gym regularly and walks are a natural part of my day. It took almost 30 years for someone like Kristen to come into my life and help me associate working out with pleasure and fun and smiling and positivity. Before then, I associated physical fitness with body self-consciousness, pain, feeling inadequate with sports and competition. Kristen Huffman and her YBB class changed my life in the most positive of ways. I'm such a happier person since I started shaking my booty after a little yoga and before a little ballet. ;)

Yelp
First review of the new year! I have been a fan of Heartbeat House since they opened years ago, before the studio expansion and the overwhelming variety of dance fitness classes. The instructors are topnotch, the studio is clean and they have a diverse selection of classes with a wide spectrum of skill levels and physical demands to satisfy pretty much anybody's exercise needs. With everything from yoga to Zumba to pilates to classes that hone skills like Samba, Bellydance and Bollywood, there is an staggering variety to choose from. They even have classes for children and seniors. I have a background in dance while my mom has two left feet, but we both equally enjoy Zumba on Tuesday nights with Shawnee. I just love the idea of dance fitness. I dread going to gym. I hate running. But I actually look forward to dance class. It's fun, I forget myself for the hour I'm there and I leave dripping with sweat and in high spirits. It's physically and emotionally fulfilling. New students can take advantage of $5 classes for the first week to explore the schedule. And don't forget classes are $5 during your birthday week! Parking can be tricky. There is limited metered parking in front of the studio which is free after 8PM and Sundays. There is residential parking available, but expect to walk a block or two, so time your visits appropriately! Heartbeat House is a neighborhood gem, and I can't wait to see what they have in store for 2015! Tip: Single drop-in classes are now $16. Buy class packages (available in many options) to save a few bucks per class.

Yelp
So far, I've taken three classes (Samba, Zumba & Muev8) with their pretty cool new student special! For $5 a class your first week, you can take 55 min classes. Afterwards, the price goes back up to $15 a class, which is a little pricey in my opinion. Both classes I've taken have been fun and tiring but they've also been very different... Some of their classes are meant to teach a skill/dance, these I felt were less cardio and more skill teaching. Pretty cool if that's what you want. The cardio classes like Zumba and Muev8 are more for those who want a total workout. I absolutely loved Muev8! Marilyn is great at what she does. However! I do wish the were more welcoming towards new students, it would help a lot. I guess all the staff being more friendly would help. I also wish someone would have told me about the STUDENT ID DISCOUNT?

Yelp
The best inclusive dance house around! Every class I've been to has been awesome. Super friendly. Get ready to sweat and have a great time!

Yelp
this is such a fun place for girls (mostly) to get a fun workout without being self conscious. parking's not too bad, you get a great mix of women who wanna work out but bored with the humdrum ways of working out. I'm excited - they're going to offer hula dancing soon. they also offer samba, burlesque, african dance, bollywood, ... the music makes all the difference. and it's definitely ok to not be coordinated! You know it's fun when walkers-by, from kids to dogs (and sometimes creepy dudes), peer through to see what's shakin' in there.

Yelp
There are plenty of reasons why you should come here, as the abundance of reviews have already noted. For me, the cost per class is a bit steep so take advantage of the new student $5/class offer to see if you really want to commit. I do love the way HH is a welcome place for non dancers and dancers alike. I took several classes, and enjoyed them, but I'm not entirely sure whether I'll come back right away. Mostly because I just couldn't really get enough of a workout. I have good endurance and was really looking for a cardio workout but just didn't get enough. Part of it is because I'm concentrating on the choreography so I am trying to remember a routine which for me, equals more brain thinking and less range of movement. All classes were fun though. Some instructors mix up the class with light weights and it sorta cuts the cardio short which was a little disappointing, but if you want variety in the workout, it's a plus for you. The Bollywood Aerobics was probably the most cardio. I didn't take any Zumba or Latin aerobic classes and those might be good cardio, but I've taken a lot of Zumba at other places and I seem to encounter the same issue - one or two really high energy instructors, but most end up being much more moderate and it's not enough of a workout. I like taking strength/cardio classes at the gym and was really wanting a place to vary up the routine, but I don't think HH is enough. Or maybe I'm just too choreographically challenged to get the most out of it. At times, I was thinking I would get a better workout just out dancing on a Saturday night. But I do appreciate the community feel of HH and may come back to check out another class or two to give it another shot.

Yelp
Cool classes but their schedule is only great for stay at home moms. For example. They have kid classes at 3pm on a Thursday and AM workouts starting around 8:30am, I would love if they accommodated to people that work during the week.

Yelp
It's all about the Afro-Funk with Tanita. She takes the time to really show you the moves and even though I'm not new to choreography this was a bit challenging. Pushing your body is the way to do it though. You feel invigorated afterward with a few new moves under your belt. Tanita is great vibes and really makes you feel loved. Building a lean body like hers never felt so fun!

Yelp
Wow, almost three years since my initial Heartbeat House review! The wonderful and talented instructors, great daily variety of classes, and friendly and supportive staff and HH community have helped me achieve my fitness and weight loss goals. Before I started taking aerobic dance classes, exercise always seemed like a chore, and one that I would put off all too often. Now I look forward to staying fit hrough dance! I tend to take the cardio-centric dance classes, but the classes run the gamut from heart-pumping, to technique and choreography driven, to more mellow options. They also have yoga and pilates classes at the studio. I am a heartbeat house devotee!!! My only wish is that the airconditioning system undergoes an upgrade...the poor ventilation/circulation can make for some uncomfortably hot and sweaty workouts.

Yelp
Man my heart is heavy, but I have to update my previously-glowing review. A few things were starting to feel a little stale - the floors are a little damaged and don't feel particularly clean. There's no system in place for cleaning mats after a workout which gives me the willies. Still, totally forgivable - wonderful classes, motivated and dedicated instructors, ease of scheduling. But boy did they screw up in a major way. Unbeknownst to me, a photo of my son and me, taken in the privacy of my own home, was lifted from my private Instagram account and used to promote a class - a class I wasn't even taking - without my permission or consent in any form. They then thanked me for the image and I was like WHAAAAAA?? Look: mistakes happen. I contacted the studio and the person in charge of social media took down the post and apologized in an earnest and kind email, and I was grateful for her quick action + reply. But the owner did nothing, aside from issuing a vague apology. I contacted her to let her know how violated and ill-at-ease I felt about returning. Silence. Forwarded the email again - maybe it got lost in the shuffle? Still silence. I'm just one client - but I've been going there for many years, and I've brought a ton of pals with me, and it was a safe and happy space that got totally overshadowed by this flub and by the unwillingness to make me feel safe and happy again. It's a shame because WOW have I loved dancing there, but it's bad business, and I can't continue to support it in good conscience. So I'll be dancing elsewhere from here on out. I hesitated to write this review but it's been eating me up, so there it is. I miss it terribly and hope my experience was a teachable moment. It certainly was for me!

Yelp
Fantastic dance studio in a really eclectic neighborhood! They offer a wide variety of classes & many are perfect for people who are just beginners to dance & exercise! The instructors are very kind, open, & inspirational!!! Hector, EJ, Lorena & Rocky teach super fun classes you must try!

Yelp
This is an absolute gem of a place. I was drawn to the studio by Hector and Eder's Zumba classes about 3 years ago, and over time I have just continued to appreciate the unique, community-oriented, fun environment that Heartbeat House has to offer. Going to Heartbeat House is one of the things I miss most about my life before the pandemic, and I'm very much looking forward to going back some day. They do stream classes, so make sure to check them out and continue to support their amazing instructors! :)

Yelp
I really want to love this studio, I do. I mean, you can't go wrong with a dance workout, right? I'm not a regular member but occasionally fancy a dance workout, and have gone to a few of their classes. Most recently, I took the Booty Ballet, where they had a live drummer. I have to say that I was disappointed: the routine had no rhyme or rhythm, it was a lot of jumping around and up and down. the routine didn't even match the music. and worst of all, the music was sooo loud that we could barely hear the drummer. A LIVE drummer! what a shame. I was really looking forward to feeling and moving with the beat of the drums... To some degree I've found these classes pointless - look, if you want a good workout and don't mind jumping up and down with no reason (zumba!), then go for it. But for me, I'd rather take an actual dance class where I'm moving with a rhythm. Also, they really need to VENTILATE this studio, clean the floors, and clean the mats for gods sake. I only took one yoga class in this studio, but never again do I want to be so close to that floor. :(

Yelp
This place is a gem. The teachers are super fun, nice and approachable. Music is amazing. It's a home away from home!

Yelp
Such a great local place to dance/get physical. Both my 7-year old daughter and I have taken Bollywood with Alessia and she is absolutely amazing. Their prices are really fair and they have an amazing variety of classes for adults and kids.

Yelp
The $10 yoga class with Annie has CHANGED MY DANG LIFE. I've been intimidated by several yoga classes before I found this one. I stared going more regularly to help recover from an accident. This class has really helped me feel stretched out and stronger. The main thing I love love love about it is the thoughtful language that helps me focus on MY experience and body without judgment. I get real judgey up in my head about "doing it right." Annie has made me feel like practicing new movements or balancing or stretching is GOOD for me and my body. I've been able to practice acceptance of so many things with this class. Go to it. Asked her about the baby bird. Just quit your day job and go.

Yelp
Love the classes here. Good mix of fitness and dance and just such a nice, inclusive community. It attracts a diverse clientele and provides a very warm, non-competitive atmosphere, so that people feel empowered to try all different types of classes without feeling too self-conscious. Love Cati's ballet, Rocky's "Rock Your Best" and Laura's HIIT/Yoga.

Yelp
This place is magical. I can't even figure out how to explain it -- you just need to go for yourself. Amy's Hip Hop classes and Anna's barre are my favorites, at the risk of making them even more crowded.

Yelp
Heartbeat House allows me to stay in shape with a variety of classes that suit my needs. The Instructors are exceptional and take active roles in your developmental program. The atmosphere is friendly and helpful. For those like myself who need to be in a structured environment to do exercise this is the "spot."

Yelp
It is time to update my review. Heartbeat house is a gathering place where people of all walks of life come together to enjoy dance.(it is cheaper than therapy) I have met some of the most genuine people here and continue to recommend that others check it out on a weekly basis. There is literally something for everyone here. I have been checking out other studios but the climate and majority of instructors at Heartbeat are seriously the best. I am seriously grateful to be able to dance with everyone at Heartbeat.

Yelp
This is a really great studio with so many amazing classes and teachers. I especially love the Hiit and sculpting classes. Great people and great teachers and the location could not be better!

Yelp
Because I decided that the gym doesn't agree with my lifestyle. I don't like waiting for him to finish sweating on the elliptical so I can get my sweat on. To hell with that. I love dancing, I need to exercise, why not go to a dance studio to get my cardio on? I love the Heartbeat House because: 1. Its in Atwater Village. 2. I live in A-town 3. Its inexpensive [$5 for your first week and you're allowed to try any classes you like. $15 a class thereafter or you can get package deals] 4. the studio is spacious enough to not step on your neighbors foot 5. I get to watch other folks stare at my chest through the huge mirrors in front 6. My instructor was hot Park on the street. You have your choice: in front, to the side, or on a residential street. I have only been here on the weekends and I find parking to be fairly easy. I wanted to go into detail about the class I attended, but I don't want to make it strange for me next time I go, so I'll update this in due time.

Yelp
Is it DANCE? Is it FITNESS? I can't tell the difference, and that's what makes HH a no brainer in the burning calories department. It's $5 for newbs for each class for the first week so you can try out different styles, times, teachers, etc. on the cheap to craft out your ideal workout/dance schedule. From Bollywood to Latin to Yoga to Kickboxing to Zumba, you name it, they've probably got a class catering to those fancy foot moves. I'm still in my first week and surprisingly really enjoy the Zumba classes (at one point I used to laugh hysterically at Zumba classes from afar because they looked so cheesy, which was a workout in itself, but aren't I the fool!). I've only attended the late afternoon/evening classes and get there about 10-15 minutes early with no issues. The class size is comfortable and they have water for sale in case you forgot some liquid refreshment, and complimentary towels to wipe your sweat off. And, there's a whole lot of that happening! Metered parking in front (free after 8pm, all day on Sunday). Not all classes are created equal, but that's half the fun of HH, trying to figure out which ones you like busting a move to and which ones leave you busted up!

Yelp
Applying for a student discount at Heartbeat House is a more scrutinous process than applying to a PHD Program at an Ivy League University. For example if you are a FULL time student, but you are on Summer/Winter breaks you are no longer eligible for the student discount. This is ridiculous, because the time a student is most likely to take advantage of dance classes is during school holidays. but OH NO, if you are not enrolled in classes at the time you want to attend Heartbeat House then you are not eligible for the student discount and will be turned away. so while the discount is awesome: $5 OFF for students, it might as well not exist since it has so many contingencies that make it almost impossible for students to actually take advantage of it. Best Class here is Amazing 80s. All other classes you can take at any other gym or dance studio. Marissa is really nice but you don't really get a good workout in her Zumba class. You have fun and you enjoy yourself, but you don't break a sweat. Latin Jam will raise your heartbeat but, again you can take this class at any other studio. Burlesque Ballet sounded good, and i took it and hated it! I consider myself an advanced salsa dancer and an intermediate all-around dancer, and i had a hard time following the instructor in this class. the bathrooms are clean. the dance studio has large floor to ceiling mirrors and windows that face the outside. People walking by can stop and watch as you dance your calories away. if you are not shy, like me, you might enjoy the limelight, but if you are a bit more reserved, maybe this is not the place for you. I don't want to support a business that doesn't support the students in its community. I hear that the new gym that opened just a few doors down is pretty amazing and offers dance classes too, plus competitive deals!

Yelp
I've been dancing all my life, and once I stopped, I gained a lot of weight and have been in the wort shape of my life. Dance has always been my passion, and I was always able to dance 3-4 times a day for 3-4 hours at a time without feeling a bit tired. I've done the whole personal training thing, signed up and paid for gym memberships and have immediately become bored, and couldn't continue working out. My uncle was my dance teacher, and is the owner of Ara Dance Company (Reseda and Glendale), and is a professional Flamenco dancer who has taken classes and perform with Angelita at El Cid for years. She is the Flamenco instructor at Heartbeat. I was hesitant to take the first class, because of how out of shape I was physically and how I lacked the stamina I used to have, but once I was in class, I felt so comfortable, and found my element. I checked out the other classes they have, and I immediately decided to sign up to several of the classes and go after work. I think I finally will be able to get back in shape and continue my love of dance thanks to this studio (and my Uncle, who pushed me to go.. thanks Unc!) Atmosphere is happy. Vibe is positive, and the location is PERFECT.

Yelp
I'll never step foot in the place again. First I find out they have a student discount, so I said hey I'm a student gave my papers and thought everything was fine. Then they send out a newsletter with this wording."We are sorry to say that due to the abuse of the privilege, We must be specific in explaining for whom the student discount is intended" Why didn't they explain it when they offered it. Why wait and then call people abusers. I unsubscribed to the newsletter and a week later I get an application and a note from them and the email had everybody's address on it...Unprofessional in this day and age...They can't send mass mailing without giving away everybody's email address. A lot of places have different policies on student discounts and that is fine as long as they state what the policy is before they decide to call people abusers. What is so hard about stating it up front before they accept your money? Yes a business must state its policy because they are varied at different business. You can not give somebody the discount after you have looked over the papers and said nothing. What pisses me off is that they announce a student discount in a newsletter with no information except that they have a student discount. They accepted money and said nothing. The next two newsletters go on to degrade the people who used it. They should have accepted responsibility for not posting a policy in the first place and never ever should they degrade a customer. In the newsletter they talked about people with expired ids. That was not my case however degrading customers is not acceptable behavior. I would have found the behavior despicable even if I wasn't somehow involved. Talking bad about people in a newsletter and email as they did is not acceptable. All they had to do was state what the policy is and own it not throw it off on others who they allowed to use it.
