We've been to most of the resorts in Tahoe, including all of the Epic/Ikon resorts (Northstar, Kirkwood, Squaw/Alpine, and Heavenly). Heavenly is by far our least favorite. They cater to tourists and newbies, which in and of itself is fine, but I would argue the other resorts listed (sans maybe Kirkwood) do a fine job of that as well without alienating more advanced skiers/snowboarders in the process. I'll explain why:
1. Slow signs EVERYWHERE, to the point where you're busier worrying about getting flagged down by the overzealous staff than enjoying your day. Speaking of...
2. Overzealous staff. My god, do these guys love to pull people aside for the most mundane stuff. Going a bit too fast in full and complete control? They're still gonna stop you. Hitting a jump as a skier pizzas out of control by you? That's your fault, stop hot-dogging. Getting nearly hit from behind by someone UP mountain? Also your fault, doesn't matter. These guys are by far the trigger-happiest folks in all of Tahoe. I will say they are usually friendly about it, but still. Heavenly is basically the Hall Monitor of the Tahoe resorts.
3. They 100% discriminate against snowboarders. I say that as someone who has been both a skier and a snowboarder. Heavenly knows where their bread is buttered and it's the tourist/holiday skiing sector, not the local all-season riders, especially not snowboarders. To be fair, this is probably a consequence of their staff being predominantly 55+ old male skiers who still dwell on the "good ole' days," rather than Heavenly actively trying to push out snowboarders.
4. The tourists. My god the tourists. I thought Park City was bad, but at least it's spread out enough to avoid the throng of tourists most days. This place was a zoo on a WEEKDAY. I've never been on a weekend, thank god. Half of them are standing in the middle of the run taking selfies, the other half are bombing said run because they don't know how to stop. But "Heaven" forbid I do the same thing under control because I might hurt someone!
This sounds like a rant. It's not. I'm actually glad Heavenly exists as a proverbial "buffer" for the other resorts. The tourists love it because it's smack dab in the middle of the apres scene and it's the best mountain for a selfie with your friends. For anyone who actually WANTS to ski or snowboard, you'd be better off spinning a wheel and going wherever the arrow lands. And that's not a jab against Epic - Kirkwood is my favorite mountain in all of Tahoe.
To Heavenly/Epic, you've got your demographic to market to. If you ever want to cater to anyone outside of that demo, I suggest toning down on your excessive and prohibitive "policing" policy, hiring younger staff to enforce said policy (or at least teaching your older staff that snowboarders =/= degenerate teens anymore), and cutting the number of SLOW signs in half. I don't need to see six of them per run.
