The Hebert Candy Mansion - Gastro Obscura

"New England has a very storied and sweet history of candy making. The first commercial chewing gum was made in Bangor, Maine in 1848. The Necco Wafer was the oldest continuously manufactured product in the United States from 1847 to 2018. Central Falls, Rhode Island was once called “Chocolateville” and the oldest chocolate factory in America was founded in Boston in 1764. Today, majority of New England’s candy makers are either no longer in operation or have been merged with other corporation. There is one location, however, that has been in continuous operation for over 100 years. Frederick E. Hebert founded Hebert Candies when he purchased a copper kettle, knife, table iron, thermometer, and a slab of marble for $11 in 1917. In 1946 Hebert purchased a stone Tudor mansion on Route 20 connecting central Massachusetts to Boston. He moved his operations there, becoming the first roadside confectioner in the United States. In 1956 he traveled to Europe and became the first person to introduce white chocolate to the United States. The company continued to grow and has been a New England mainstay for over a century. The Hebert Candy Mansion in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts is a real treat to visit. The mansion exterior hearkens back to another time. The shelves are filled with dozens of kinds of handcrafted chocolates and the kitchen where everything is produced is viewable for the public. There is also an ice cream shop and a hallway lined with chairs where one can enjoy the delicious products and learn more about the company’s history. Know Before You Go The Candy Mansion hosts regular events. Check the website for details." - TheDiscoveryService

We went here on the last day on March -29-24 with my family to see the Easter bunny 🐰 was there. The prices were really high . Somewhat nostalgia, I guess, but not really in a sense . The look of Herbert Candy Mansion looks too modern. The prices were just (WOW)! Something to do with the family! It was some place I went as a kid, but different changed. The last time I went like 15 years ago .

Google
Very small, customer service was terrible, candy didn't taste all that great but the ice cream was really good. For being my first time, I wouldn't waste my gas or money again.

Google
Traditionally I bring my daughter for Easter and Christmas time for the Easter bunny and Santa. Today I brought my granddaughter for a treat for graduating preschool. We enjoyed ice cream in the cute ice cream parlor followed by a treat from the candy selection. We adore this place and look forward to our next visit

Google
A sweet, longstanding New England brand (though no longer the original family business) housed within a stately stone and stucco Craftsman era magical, majestic manor. IF you're in a nostalgic mood and the idea of visiting a beautifully vintage, formerly iconic chocolate factory with a handsome stone façade is appealing, then you'll likely enjoy stopping in for a visit. It's nice to have a look around, admire the beautiful woodwork and to inhale the sweet aroma, but the selection and quality of the product, just isn't what it used to be. Something drastic seems to have changed the signature white chocolate recently. The legendary silky, seductively smooth texture and rich, creamy flavor has taken on sour notes. This is a huge disappointment considering the product's prior reputation for authentic, high quality consistency.

Google
This place was always a good place to go to in a walking distance but after today my opinon changed. The employes accused me and my friends off shoplifting with no evidence at all. Because of this now we can only come with adults. Herberts do better

Google
The best gormet chocolate around. Especially during the holidays. Halloween, Easter, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day. They have something for all occasions. They also have a build your own ice cream sundae bar. I've been going there for as long as I can remember. Smells so go in there.

Great event! Thank-You! We enjoyed

Google
I used to come here as a kid. Now I bring my own family. Everyone loves it and the chocolate and ice cream are amazing.

Yelp
Phenomenal candy and services! Would highly recommend. If you're in the area stop in for great service and experience.

Yelp
I ordered from here for a family function. I was going to place a larger corporate order but decided not to after I dealt with this company and their lack of professionalism. I placed an order for 3 boxes. Two were delivered and one was never received, even after 7 days. I contacted the company; they were very unprofessional. They responded to each of my inquiries by stating my package was already shipped out. I have reached out to UPS and USPS and filed complaints with both companies regarding my package, which they claim was never received. I wouldn't recommend ordering anything from here.

Yelp
Like your chocolate waxy? Come on down. Poor quality but they do have a very noble legacy of community support. Always had good service and the price is fair. The building is super cool. Good place to get a lot of stuff for holiday giving to people like coworkers or business acquaintances
google avatar

Lizzie R.

Yelp
I'm rating their events more so than their chocolate. I've never really cared for their chocolate for as long as I've been going here (my whole life). But I love coming here to see Santa, the Easter Bunny, and now, Anna & Elsa with my daughter. I love that they had the opportunity to meet The Grinch this holiday season, too, even though we didn't get to attend. The workers are always nice and the characters they hire are great with kids. I'm looking forward to coming back every year!

Yelp
I was not impressed with the chocolate but I did enjoy the retail establishment and thought the staff was extremely friendly and helpful!

David D.

Yelp
Overall a great old fashioned place to go and get some excellent sweets. Known for their chocolate but delicious ice cream and many candies are awesome too.
google avatar

Yelp
Always stop here when in the area and sometimes go out of the way for a visit. Best white chocolates, consistent, packaged very well and always fresh made in stock.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this old favorite candy store while visiting family the other day. Walking in the door, I felt like a kid again. I had to look at everything and remember old favorites like the chocolate bark, the strawberry string licorice and their famous fudge. We got some chocolate bars and I got a few chocolate lobster pops. The place was all decked out for Halloween. Wish we could have seen the chocolate factory in operation but it was Sunday. The staff are pleasant but not overly friendly. They were young so maybe they are tired of people who remember Hebert' s from their childhood.

Yelp
I had no idea this place existed! I was researching things to do around Worcester for kids to make a short day trip a little more worth while. I found it, saw the day we were in town they were having a Halloween party and I was in! it was $10 with a canned good or $13. This price got us a felt Halloween trick or treat bag (kids got to choose out of four designs), free popcorn, 2 edible art activities, 20% discount on ice cream, a full size boo bar and a few stations where the kids could trick or treat. It has a great concept but the staff were not overly enthused (they were nice but needed more excitement! Be more interactive with the kids.) There are so many candy options here! I didn't know what to get. I thought they were decently priced (except the truffle bar was $24.95/lb!) There was seasonal fudge flavors, all different shaped pops, contests and free samples. Only other thing I would have liked to see is an official ice cream topping worker to monitor the cleanliness of the open toppings- I was worried as I saw many young kids who were very tempted and some got too close to touching! I am sure it happens.

Yelp
This review is only for the ice cream portion as I've only eaten and went to the ice cream bar so the review will reflect that. The staff they have working Hebert's ice cream bar are very friendly and personable. They let you sample the ice cream and explain the whole ice cream bar process to you it's really nice. The ice cream bar has soo many toppings, I would advise if you have any food allergies you take caution because there could be a chance of cross contamination with other toppings. The toppings bar is SELF SERVE so one can never be too careful. Ample seating around and the decor is very cute. If you're just wanting to go on an ice cream date I would suggest this. It's nice for kids too.

Yelp
Don't be fooled into thinking the Hebert's Candy Mansion in Shrewsbury is the real thing, it's not. Hebert sold it years ago and this place isn't run by the Hebert family and doesn't have the original Hebert recipe. Colonial candies in Bolton MA is the original and the best and is run by the Heberts. Go there instead.
google avatar

AJ C.

Yelp
Only went to the ice cream window, not even the main place, so this review is seriously limited. The ice cream was good, small flavor selection, but it was all good. I got ginger, my wife got a no-sugar added one and they were super tasty. It could use more outdoor seating though.
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
Although this place is cute I have to admit I was a little underwhelmed. As I entered the store nobody greeted me nor at any point asked if I needed any help finding anything. And the store wasn't playing any music so you just quietly walk though the place with the floors creaking and nobody greeting you lol however their chocolate Easter bunnies were absolutely beautiful and their was quite the variety of filled chocolates and eggs for Easter as well. The displays of premade Easter baskets and chocolates really was beautiful. They also offer a ice cream buffet which looks fun but it was too cold today for me to indulge in ice cream. I wouldn't make a special trip for this place but would stop if I was already in the area

Yelp
I have been coming here since I was a kid, and now I have a great time bringing my kids here. We usually come for the ice cream, which is terrific. However, the chocolate is so good that we usually end up buying some of that as well.

Patrick S.

Yelp
Friend of mine who lives near the Herbert Candy mansion just sent me a box of their chocolates. I was a big fan of their almond Geneva's as a kid. I have to say I was disappointed. These do not taste the same as they used to. I saw here that the Herberts sold it years ago and this isn't the same recipe. It's not. This chocolate has that wax like taste that you get in lower quality chocolates. Too bad, it really was something special but apparently going to a lesser quality product saves them money? Oh well.

Yelp
I used to live in the Worcester area and the Hebert Candy Mansion on Route 20 was a frequent stop, especially when we had out of town visitors. The minute you walk in, the intoxicating smell of chocolate hits you. All sorts of chocolates everywhere you look -bars, pops, by the pound, by the gift box -on and on. Visually it's a real feast, and if you have any little ones with you, well be prepared to see their little eyes bug out. They also have an ice cream counter and a "sundae bar", which got me thinking today (always a dangerous thing). We have become so inundated with froyo joints on every street corner with their interchangeable "toppings bar" that I had forgotten that once upon a time, these topping bars were unheard of. But now that I think back to my years in Worcester, it seems to me that Hebert's may have had one of the very first toppings bar I ever saw, back in the very late 1970's or early 1980's. It was a sensation back then. Today its commonplace. Anyway, if you're ever on Route 20 eastbound in Shrewsbury, put on your right blinker, pull into the mansion, and let out your inner child. Or at least your adult chocoholic. This place is a treasure........

Keira R.

Yelp
Herbert's Candies (or the Hebert Candy Mansion as my family calls it) has been a tradition for my family every year at Easter. We always go, say hi to the easter bunny, grab a free chocolate bar and buy a couple of our favorite sweets. It always smells heavenly inside and there's always a great assortment of chocolate to choose from. I recommend the chocolate nonpareils!

Allison T.

Yelp
We pulled up as they were closing on Saturday. It was 5;01. The staff saw us standing outside and opened up for us since they just closed. They were very nice and pleasant. They were very patient as we shopped and didn't rush us at all. This store is sentimental to my family as my father who passed away would head here on every trip to Massachusetts or Maine. Thank you for letting us continue our traditions!!
google avatar

Yelp
What a fun mansion of sugar! If you haven't gone...go. They have a wonderful ice cream bar and lots of amazing candies, choc, and a little gift shop room. Going during a holiday is a nice treat too since you can get specialty candies to give to the little ones as gifts. Easter is coming!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in and was totally surprised at all the wonderful and delicious things!!! Reasonably priced too! Kicking myself for not having done it sooner... Bought a bunch of chocolate and candies... sooooo good! Friendly, helpful staff. Will definitely be back again!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a very unique candy store. Old building with lots of charm. Friendly staff. Mostly chocolate items with a range of prices. Their chocolate is delicious. Growing up in central MA, Heberts has always been a treat and staple. Stopped in tonight to pick up a box of chocolates for Thanksgiving. Plenty to pick from. They also offer ice cream as well. Seems like they host kids birthday parties, too. Plenty of parking and they take cash and credit. Go check it out! Lots to pick from!
google avatar

Erin N.

Yelp
I love heberts! I've been coming here since I was a kid. There aren't many candy stores like this around and it's nice to have this place nearby. It's great for kids, I used to have birthday parties here I don't know if they still do though. The staff is usually very friendly. One time we had a problem with a seemingly new employee who gave us the wrong flavor ice cream and then didn't have enough of the right flavor to make a medium, she got very nervous and ran for the manager, she probably could've handled it better but when the manager stepped in she was very kind and helpful. Other than this one incident I've never had anything bad to say about this place. It's worth a stop.

Yelp
I have to begin with a little bit of schtick... I'm convinced Herbert Candies is the best candies in the area... but I'm not from the area. That matters for me for specific items in the store. When I walked in, I immediately suffered sensory overload from the wonderful smells, especially since, with Autumn approaching, the Halloween candy is starting to come out. My enthusiasm waned slightly as I wandered through certain sections of the store. I thought certain items were very much high-profit items, such as gumdrops and peanut brittle. I've made peanut brittle, so I know how easy it is to make a halfway decent brittle, but to be fair, I didn't sample theirs. I was uncertain about the chocolate. The variety is impressive, but to me, the price was not. I have a favorite spot to buy chocolate in New York, and many of their items - chocolate, fudge, truffles - are significantly less. But I also knew I needed to sample it before making a judgment. My absolute favorite thing at Herbert is their taffy. For me, taffy is an occasional treat when I visit a shop along the coast. Their taffy is the same price. The pieces are slightly smaller (meaning I can have more pieces without feeling guilty), the flavors are varied and intense, and it is very fresh. It will be difficult for me to ever buy taffy anyplace else after this. I was worried I wouldn't be able to make a fair judgment on their chocolate, but 2 nice things occurred. The first was the lady behind the counter showed me samples of their featured chocolate of the month, a chocolate-covered caramel. Then she pointed me to their end-of-season clearance table in the back, which featured several of their summer lines of chocolates at SEVENTY FIVE PERCENT OFF (can you tell I'm a little excited now?). So of course I bought a box of their Geneva Dark Chocolate. These are smaller pieces of solid dark chocolate. They are also incredibly rich. Herein lies my predicament... my favorite store in NY sells dark chocolates for about half the price, but slightly less quality. So for me, I will have to decide whether I want to satisfy my wallet, or my palate. Or, I can satisfy them both by patronizing both stores.
google avatar

Katie K.

Yelp
Beautiful, delicious chocolate. Reasonable prices. A huge variety. It's worth the trip.

Ellen L L.

Yelp
What an inept group of workers at this place! The candy is way over priced and the man ringing up the sale read the "amount in pounds" upside down so I was over charged. Two small chocolate bunnies and a half a Pound of candy wasn't worth half of what I paid. Then it took forever for them to figure it out. Won't return. Hershey bars are better than this.
google avatar

Rose M.

Yelp
Hebert Candies Just walking into this place will put anyone in a good mood, it just smells so wonderful. I try and go a couple times a year to get a special sweet my husband just loves - chocolate covered cherries which you can get in milk and/or dark chocolate. I get him both, a treat he deserves and loves. I love going and just checking out all the different displays and types of candy which is plentiful!! No matter what Holiday it is, the place is dazzling. They also have the area you can get ice cream which is always a nice, delicious treat for everyone. The place Is a little on the expensive side, but you get what you pay for and this place Is soooo darn worth every penny....
google avatar

Brendan O.

Yelp
Unique store in an even more unique building. An actual stone mansion is the home to this chocolate store. I recently visited for the first time in about 20 years and the place hasn't changed at all. I don't have much of a sweet tooth, so the main attraction for me is the ice cream bar. You can choose from 1-3 scoops of a wide variety of flavors, and then top them with unlimited amounts of your choice of 20-30 different toppings and sauces. The maple syrup pecan sauce is highly recommended, but avoid the coffee ice cream, if you ask me. All in all it ends up being about or less expensive than a basic Friendly's sundae with a much wider variety of choices.
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
Took the kids to the Candy Mansion. Candy and ice cream sundaes. I think I'm up for 'dad of the year' now.
google avatar

Scott B.

Yelp
Way back when I lived in the local area, this was always one of my favorite places to stop and enjoy some ice cream. This place was a must on my return to the area. I entered the building, and the aroma of chocolate hit me. Just like I'd remembered from all those years ago. The place was meticulously decorated for Halloween, and they had their chocolate bags and bars and candies and other assorted items spread around the place. I meandered around with a basket, and picked up assorted chocolate bars. As I walked up to the register, the guy greeted me, and thanked me for my patronage. I rambled on about my visiting after a long absence, and another customer piped in and said she was also returning for a visit after moving to New Jersey. My items rang up, and the end total was about fifty dollars. Wow. Little stuff adds up quick! Totally worth it though. Grand memories have happened here. The place is beautiful, inside and out. If your in this area, stop in, and treat yourself to a gem. Have a great ice cream sundae, and buy some delicious chocolate bars.

Yelp
Had such a build up of this place in my mind from things I had heard over the years... so off we went with the boys for some candy... The place is big from the Outside but is literally just a few little rooms.. They have lots of options and a counter of "Better" Chocolates & the back room is clearly the Kids room with some gifts... they also had Ice Cream (and there were people sitting out front on the grass eating some as well) Bought some taffy, some Peanut Brittle (the BFs Fave and OMG HE LOVED IT) and just some other little things here & there... Went back this weekend to get more brittle & they were out & I was told they only make it when they run out (well you are out & just told me you dont know when you are making it again - so not sure if that is answer rings true)... EIther way I will probably go back again when at the BFs house to try to find more brittle but otherwise not for much else.. We have been going to the Wayside Country Store for the penny candy selection (just that their brittle doesnt measure up!)

Yelp
This is solely a review of the ice cream window: There was no one here when we arrived, customers nor employees. After about 5 minutes someone came to the window. My daughter ordered a banana split, a classic sundae and my husband and I ordered one of their custom sundaes, Chunky Monkey, I believe it was named, to share. It was de to share. Eventually we were told they thought they were out of bananas, but fortunately they found one. Then they were out of 2 of the 3 toppings my daughter had chosen. Our sundae was described as banana ice cream, walnuts, peanut butter fudge and whipped cream. Once we finally received our sundaes, it took about 15 minutes and we were the only ones there, we were told we were not allowed to sit inside (it was an unseasonably chilly summer night). So we wrapped in blankets and dug in. What s disappointment! The ice crew was crystallized and could have been any flavor. The "peanut butter fudge" was a small square of fudge, not a liquid topping! How is it a sundae with no liquid topping?!? We all left over half of our sundaes (unheard of!) because they were just that bad.

Yelp
Look - this place does chocolate right. Their candy = amazing. Their variety = out of this world. The location and building are just plain awesome, too. Sometimes I think that I'm overpaying for chocolate and then I actually eat it and realize there's no such thing as overpaying for quality indulgences (as I sit here eating a "Nutella & Go" snack - not the same). They have a great "penny candy" section (obviously nothing's a penny anywhere anymore but calling it "many pennies candy" doesn't sound the same). They have some great nostalgic candies and treats that are fun to see again and introduce to my own kids. It's a great place, in my opinion, to grab a gift for just about anyone that likes anything sweet - from sugar free candy to indulgent truffles to button candy... you'll find it here. The Easter Bunny visits at Easter time. He's not creepy looking and he's FREE to visit! Two rare bunny finds, if you ask me. Legit, no obligation to buy anything and they also give you a deliciously famous Hebert's Candy Bar just for visiting. Then, at Christmas, go see Santa. You might want to plan this one when the time is right (aka: don't go when they first open for the day) because the line can be borderline obscene. And kids standing properly in line inside a CANDY STORE is pretty much a joke that no parent will laugh about. None. Anywhere. And you can end up on Santa's naughty list by the time to get to him. But their set-up for Santa is really beautiful and inviting and super adorable. And, yes, you also get a candy bar for visiting Santa (the kids do - parents will have to sneak a taste because they aren't handing them out to us old folks. It's for the kids!). They have an ice cream sundae bar that is quite spectacular and hard to find these days. Lots of delicious flavors of ice cream that can be topped with a huge variety of fresh and unhealthy toppings that will be a nice treat on a hot (or cold) day. Definitely try it - it's really fun and my kids always get a kick out of it when we treat them. Anyway - go here. Stop on your way through Shrewsbury on your way to... wherever. It's right on Rte 20, easily accessible, tons of parking, plenty of treats to choose from, and a grande and unique building to visit!

Yelp
Mmmmmm ... Chocolate! Love the toffee here! Great gifts selections and excellent staff. Kids seem to love the icecream as well. They had a car day here once and I WON THE HOOLA HOOP CONTEST! My son was very impressed that Mom could actually beat out all those little kids ... hee hee ... felt bad but really good, I have to admit!

Yelp
I have never been at Hebert Candies store, so honestly I have no idea about their ice creams or services, but I do know their milk chocolates very well!! I buy them from Marshall or Burlington every Christmas season!! It is like my chocolate time, and I always look for them at this season!! They have a nice packaging, with cute pictures. Their chocolate is very delicious. Humm... It's smell is something else!! I had never looked it's brand, and I saw it!! I like simple milk chocolate bars, and they are good at it! It is not heavy to stop you eating all packet, so try to share with someone to not eat all of it. I may will never be at Hebert Candies, but I will always keep to look for their chocolates at malls.
google avatar

G V.

Yelp
Love Hebert's! They have the oldies car show every Thursday in the summer, build your own sundae which you just don't see anywhere anymore. They also give tours of the factory for free. They show you how the chocolate is made, packaged, and stored (very I Love Lucy). The main staircase is always decorated so nicely around the holidays. You can see Santa and the Easter Bunny for free. They used to build a haunted house and a kid friendly "haunted" house for Halloween, I'm not sure if they still do that. Their gifts and candy are great too. They also distribute their candy to other stores under a different name as the "store brand". And every time you walk in the smell is fantastic! I will say it may be slightly pricey, but I don't mind spending the extra if it means keeping a small town icon in business for years to come.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. It brings back great memories of going there as a child with my mother. There is every type of chocolate & confections you could possibly want and a great sundae bar.We went for the sundae bar but left with all our favorite candies and chocolates. The only reason for the 4 stars is because it is on the pricey side, but other than that its a wonderful place to make memories with your children. I'm keeping the tradition alive as I now bring my little girl there.A must for parents who live in or around Worcester county. You won't regret it.
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
We loooove going here for ice cream. They have a wonderful selection and very tasty flavors. The décor is great, the building unique and everyone is super friendly. You gotta check it out!

William L.

Yelp
Homemade candies and chocolates. Ice cream buffet is great. Weekly car shows. It's a Candy Mansion. On Route 20 in Shrewsbury. Check it out.
google avatar

Josh R.

Yelp
From the castle-like exterior, to the abundance of candies inside the walls, the "Candy Mansion" is what every kid dreams of (or anyone with a sweet tooth, for that matter). Chocolates of every sort, even ones I've never heard of before like Smoking Chipotle chocolate, can be found in the chocolate room. There are plenty of truffles, treats, and toys throughout the store. I've only had a small portion of what was purchased here, but its been delicious so far! Definitely a place to check out for candy lovers alike.
google avatar

Mary-Ellen K.

Yelp
What could be better than a candy mansion? Kids were in heaven. They'd get one more star from me if they had a bigger selection of sugar free. Cute, cute gifts and Halloween themed candy. Also, packs of big bars to hand out for Halloween at pretty decent prices. I think I might go back to hand that out this year.
google avatar

Daniel W.

Yelp
I have come to this location since I was a small child. Walking into the store and smelling all of the chocolate brings me back to being a young kid. Can't beat this place.

Gizmo G.

Yelp
Extraordinary selection of candy and confectionery. Also a pretty extensive ice cream bar where you can pick from a huge number of flavors and toppings. A summer must-see if you are in the area.
google avatar

Christiaan H.

Yelp
Crazy candy shop also serves ice cream from Bliss dairy.
google avatar

Chrissie R.

Yelp
Awesome ice cream topping bar!!!! Great selection of confections. A little pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Yelp
I live fairly close to Herbert and drive by at least twice a week, but have never stopped in. Today I did. I should have kept driving. The store is very nice, the staff is overly friendly and the prices are good. But the chocolate is not very good. I wanted to get a good idea of what they make, so I bought some pieces out of the case and some chocolate bars (they have a lot of flavors). The first thing I noticed is that the chocolate has not been tempered. It should have a slight snap when you break it or bite into it. This chocolate bent and/or smashed. The fillings for the chocolates in the case were all overly sweet and runny, which should never happen for refrigerated chocolate. I'll stick with Godiva or Lindt in the future.
google avatar

Reclaimed R.

Yelp
This is a cool place, some good candy, great ice cream bar and a friendly staff.
google avatar

James V.

Yelp
OK, so it's not an actual mansion, but it is a big house that sells candy. Not real candy, but more like fancy candy that you'd only consider giving as a gift. But, they do have an ice-cream topping bar, which is a hit with any kid under twelve. Definitely a must-visit if you're on this side of the state, but be prepared to "pump it up" a bit to give your kids the full experience.

Yelp
Always loved their candies. It's over priced, but it is good and full of fond memories.

Yelp
The new owners seem to be doing a good job. The boxed candy is great, if a little expensive, but if that is what it costs to provide quality, I will remain willing to pay.
