Heid’s is a cherished Syracuse & Central New York landmark which has withstood the test of time since their opening in 1917 and moving to their current location in 1930. What an honor and treat it is to step back in time and enjoy an almost century old establishment. The food here is simple Upstate NY comfort food but perfectly done. Hotdogs, coneys, Texas hots, chili dogs, fries, pickles, grilled cheeses, chicken tenders, and mozzarella sticks are served here. It should be noted that while one can buy Hoffmans in the store, Heid’s continues to serve their own secret blend of Hoffman’s hotdogs and coneys from when they were originally founded. I continue to go here and support this wonderfully local multigenerational business just as my grandparents and great grandparents have done. It fills my heart to continue to spend time here knowing of all the people who have supported this establishment throughout its inception.

Google
I had to try Heid’s original location I was disappointed. I have heard so much about this Syracuse tradition. Especially the fries, well mine were double cooked and tasted like the grease and small. I complained and they said that’s the way they come? Look at the picture you be the judge! I did like the sausage but not the 10 dollars price. The hot dogs were very small for the price 6 dollars for a chili dog “ Really”The beer was excellent.. not sure I would go back unless they run price specials!

Google
I love this place! Although different owners than the originals I grew up with this place has the best food! Yes, not just a hot dog joint its improved menu is scrumptious ! The Philly Cheesesteak is to die for! The entire menu is great ! Yes those hot dogs we grew up with are just as delicious as when my dad took me here years ago or my friends and I went when I was in my teens. You can sit outside or cool off inside. Even if it’s a long line it goes fairly quickly but the weekends and evenings one should expect a line. No worries the foods worth it and when you have out of town guests then bring them here!

Google
Heid's is a special place for me. I have been going there since I was a child. I now live in Colorado and Heid's hot dogs are a 'taste of home". The atmosphere hasn't changed and that is perfect. The tastes, smells, and surroundings remind me of happy memories of my Dad. If I'm in Syracuse I will always make time for Heid's!!!

Google
I am 87 years old and have been going to hide since my dad worked at GE and Syracuse along with Thruway. My husband and I went for a ride yesterday and we stopped at Hyde's to have lunch and everything tasted the same as I've known for years but the hot dogs were so much smaller I would rather pay a little more and have the same old hot dogs that they always used to serve we all know prices are going up so it's skimp a little on one thing and not on another but Hoffman's hot dogs are the best and they need to be the size that they always were. The service was excellent help we're also friendly that was just a small disappointment but hides could correct it by getting the regular size hot dogs

Google
The location and facilities were great, you can feel the nostalgia. However, the food was average at best. The hot dogs I cook on my grill at home are better and only the fries stood out. Fried pickles were some of the worst I've experienced - no flavor in the breading and the pickles were tough.

My father in law has a couple connections to Heid's. He ate here as a loyal customer when the original owner was slinging hot dogs from a food cart. He also managed their business as their personal banker. So of course we had to come here to have a hot dog at this joint while we are visiting New York. It's cool that this joint was established in 1917. We are eating at a landmark of Liverpool. Walking in the front, there's a huge menu board to check out. We all walked in and ordered. It is a little crowded in the ordering area. There's not a lot of space between the wall and the counter. We ordered quite a few things. Of course we had to try everything. I really wanted to try the hot dogs but they gave veal in them. I just can't wrap my head around the veal. So, tonight I ordered the sausage with onions and peppers, onion rings and fries. Everything was cooked right in front of us while we were waiting. Everything on the grill looked so good! We loaded up our trays with our goodies after it was all cooked and headed to the dining area. I added some mustard and ketchup to my sausage. The onions and peppers were sautéed nicely. The sausage was tasty but dry. I ate about half and was over it. I didn't eat it with the roll, it was just too much. The onion rings were my favorite! I love the beer batter that they use. I dipped that onion ring in a side of cheese sauce, fantastic! The fries were good as well. And yes, they are even better dipped in cheese sauce. My husband smashed both of his chili and cheese dogs. He washed everything down with their chocolate milk. I had a sip of it and it's super chocolatey! It was neat to eat here today. I got to see what my father in law was a part of when he was Heid's personal banker. And eat what he used to eat when he was young. Everyone really enjoyed their meals. I really enjoyed the onion rings with the cheese sauce. If we ever make it back to New York, I'm pretty sure we will be here again. I'm looking forward to it.

Google
These dogs are simply the best. They grill them to perfection. Great fries, and I have to say it's one of those iconic stops you have to make. The young man taking our order was so funny that he could be a stand-up comic. One of our groups ordered the cheese steak, and it was delicious.

Yelp
Food was better than we expected. LONG line, be prepared to wait at least 20 minutes. They're good at handling a long line though so it's not that bad, but just be prepared. Have someone in your party sit at a table until the food is ready! Ambience is very cute and you can feel the history of the place. Good location, you can eat there or take your meal across the street to the park. Pricey, but the food is good and you're paying for nostalgia/notoriety. Wish they didn't charge for sauerkraut; for the prices they're asking, we found that to be a little petty.

Yelp
Heid's is always delicious. It has an old school ambiance and the employees are always friendly. I love that they have birch beer, as few restaurants in the area do. If you're looking for a unique culinary experience, heids isn't the place for you but if you want a classic hot dog and fries it's perfect!
google avatar

Yelp
It feels like you are back in time. Place gets crowded especially during summer. But the line moves fast so you better know what you are getting. Hot dog was good but I don't recommend their fried pickle which was so weird
google avatar

June W.

Yelp
What a gem! Great classic hot dogs with a nice snap. Dress-it-yourself condiments included both dill relish AND bright green sweet relish, onions, 2 kinds of mustard and ketchup. The fries were fantastic. Double fried (?) with a nice crunch on the outside.
google avatar

Orla M.

Yelp
Reliable local hot dog joint. Been around for decades and there's a reason for that. We love stopping in after a walk at the park for a red hot or white hot, and Hoffmann really are the best hot dogs I've ever had. Over the years they have expanded the menu and have cheesesteaks, sausage & peppers, and French Fries as well as other fried sides and appetizers. Food is consistent and I've never had a bad experience here. Service is always fast so don't let the long lines scare you, lol.
google avatar

Nabil K.

Yelp
Great Atmoaphere, option to eat in or out, food made to order, delicious prices were fair. Place has been open for over a hundred years and I understand why.
google avatar

Molly R.

Yelp
The prices are great. And you can't beat a Hoffman hotdog. The cheese fries are so yummy, and they don't go light on the cheese. The food is served up quickly. I love the old diner feel and low key look, it's refreshing as so many places are becoming "trendy".
google avatar

Yelp
Does Heid's even need another review!? Truly a staple of a CNY summer; must have chocolate milk or the meal is not complete!

Jim F.

Yelp
Always the same and that's a good thing! Maybe some additional items on the menu since your childhood, but essentially the place is the same. Good food in a nice throw-back atmosphere. Why knock off one star? The prices. Stopped there a couple of days ago on a whim. 2 hot dogs, small chocolate milk and a medium soda was over $16. I guess like everywhere else, this is a "treat", not a regular stop. That being said, I hope the place is always there!
google avatar

Hanna H.

Yelp
Hot dogs + fries are great!!! Staff was friendly when ordering and asking questions about menu. I love the old time diner feel, it's been a fun place to stop with friends for a quick bite, but I've also spent several hours hanging with friends here over our food :') wish it was a lil cheaper, but the experience makes it worth it

Yelp
Sooo good we were back in just a few days. The Herring with pickles and onions was only topped by the perfectly crispy fried fish. Highly recommend you give them a try.

Yelp
Our 4th destination on our drive through to Buffalo! This was one of the best experiences on the trip. We ordered 3 snappies and 1 frank with two whole pickles. The snappies are the white hots and dare i say the best! The frank i could have done without. This was all of our first time having a white hot and damn did that thing snap and bite and taste perfect. No strong hot dog flavor which was nice and which was by i wasn't a fan of the frank. The heids mustard was tangy but not too strong and those whole pickles while a bit mushy, the flavor popped. We all would definitely come back for another bite or five! Counter staff were nice and friendly with quick service! The whole place was great with a local good food feel. A place that embraced the town and the people coming in and out.

Yelp
This is a really fun causal restaurant/food stand in Syracuse. Right across from a big park/the lake, this is a great place to stop by for a quick bite. There are several hot dog options that people rave about, I prefer the chicken fingers and fries tho! There is a separate building from ice cream a couple hundred feet away from the hot food area. There are some indoor seats, but most people go in order walk down the line and sit outside at the picnic tables or in your car.
google avatar

Yelp
Well, returning to Syracuse area and had to stop at Heid's. Not good. The hot dogs were "meh". And I was really annoyed that the Freihofers top split hot dog buns were not cut on the center so the bun and toppings were a mess. Also the dogs were burned on the flat top but not heated through. Turn it down and brown them slowly!!! Nice kids working but they don't know how to cook a great hot dog....
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
As I returned from my WNY trip, I've discovered I prefer the taste of Zweigles over Sahlens and Hoffman's, and... I'm addicted to chili on a hot dog. Lol!
google avatar

Kelly R.

Yelp
Prices have gone through the roof. Hot dogs are very expensive. You could buy a package for cheaper. Nicole & dime you for everything. Not impressed with them at all.

Kar R.

Yelp
If you want the "Heid's" experience of a hot dog or "white hot" come on in. Hot dogs are bun length(split top buns) with many options. The regular toppings of onion, relish, brown mustard, and ketchup are available in the seating area. French fries, Mac & cheese, chips and fountain drinks. I always loved my hot dog with chocolate milk from Byrne Dairy. Unfortunately they no longer offer that option but do have Intense chocolate milk that tastes like a cross between cheap chocolate milk and Yoo-hoo. Inside seating is available. Service is quick. The cost for two hot dogs a bag of chips, 12oz. Chocolate milk and a small fountain drink was $18.33.

Yelp
Family up from Florida originally from this area so we had to take advantage of the rare sunny slightly warm Sunday in CNY and head to Heid's for Hoffman's. They now work with tablets streamlining the process and plenty of workers at the ready. Thinking two order tablets might speed the process in busy season but it's nice to see a traditional business using technology to continue to be good at what they do. Dogs, coneys, and fries never disappoint on Hoffman rolls even. That Heids mustard is the best! We timed it right as the line grew substantially when we were eating. Can't wait for the ice cream shop next door to open for the season.
google avatar

Yelp
A must go. We drove 300 miles to eat here today. Get the special. Get the Texas hot sauce. It's like a spacey chili. Perfect on dogs. Try a snappy dog. Just do it. Staff it super nice too.
google avatar

Kent W.

Yelp
As a Syracuse native this place is the best. Best hotdogs. Served with a bag of chips. There's always a line because their that good. And sitting outside eating a double with you're family. 5 *

Debra S.

Yelp
Just visited with my siblings and mother how is 90 years young. This is a place our family use to go we all enjoyed a chili dog and a beer . Thank you for great memories and your food hasn't changed

Connie D.

Yelp
It's not the same anymore not worth the money the hot dogs are much smaller and the buns are even smaller to make it appear that the hotdogs are bigger like they use to be your better off cooking your own!

Yelp
I lived right across the street for a year when I was fresh out of high school, but I never had a hotdog budget exceeding $6.50 so I'm only just trying the place now in my 30's. When I try a new place, I try my best to cut through the noise and look at what I'm actually being offered. I almost feel like I gypped myself out of the experience, as this place is all but propped up on nostalgia and hype. Once you get inside, you'll get to the first checkpoint where they'll ask you what you want. They don't specify that they're specifically interested in what deep fried items such as fries, moz sticks, etc. and that hotdogs are ordered later down the line. I think they get a kick out of spotting the new people. (Don't worry, we learned from the people in front of us!) It makes sense that when things are busier - this probably helps keep the line moving. With only two parties in front of us, they seemed to stagnate us at each step, taking our hotdog orders only after the last party had left and we had been holding our fries for a while. We got a frank and a snappy, a side of fries and some mac and cheese. White hotdogs (conies, snappies, whatever you wanna call them) have always weirded me out, but I figured I should try one while I'm here. Neither of us really got into the snappy. We ordered it with Kraut, and the whole thing came off way too sweet. The frank was about as good as a hotdog can be, absolutely no complains there. Definitely lives up to the hype. The mac and cheese is pretty good. Far on the gooey spectrum, but no lines were crossed. The fries are frozen, but not bad. Maybe it's just a matter of personal preference, but I'd struggle to justify coming back. Hotdog places are a tough sell for me either way, being that they typically cost as much as an expensive lunch for a meal you could eat between lunch and dinner. Even if we say this is the best hotdog available in Syracuse, the margins from the next best options are razor thin, and most don't involve the cons from this place.
google avatar

Linda L.

Yelp
Husband's " treat" stop while growing up in the local area. Definitely worth the stop. Feasted on Hoffmans frank + fried pickles + a LaBatts brew. Brown mustard - whoa! good! Fried pickles a little too salty for my taste buds. Line moves fast.
google avatar

Paige C.

Yelp
One of my favorite places for a casual dinner (or just a treat!) Heid's is right across from Onondaga Lake Parkway so it's great to take a walk afterwards, or pull out your bike or rollerblades! Their prices can't be beat - $9 for a hot dog, fries & a medium drink!
google avatar

Greg K.

Yelp
It's February, and a fine time to hunker down in front of the fireplace and tell yourself "March has 31 days, and that's no so bad...I guess". But wait! Much like the bald eagles returning to roost seasonally at Onondaga Lake, February also brings the 2 for 1 deal at Heid's! It's definitely a draw; if you're going for lunch, anticipate a line, perhaps even outside. Dress for CNY winter...which is to say, don't bother with shorts unless it's at least 30 F. A very classic, unchanged business model, simple and straight up. Oh, but did I mention coneys? Hah, you said "cooney"; you're not from around here, are ya? Yes, Heid's famously serves locally made dogs by Hoffman's, but there are coneys, which is really why you're here, right? Any schmoe can order a dog, anywhere, but coneys, or white hots if you must, are a rare thing. Spicier than a dog, showing more direct lineage to German sausage making, it's the thing to go for if you really need something on a hot dog bun. Go all the way and make it a Texas hot- but be careful here, pilgram. "Texas Hot" technically means a hot dog with hot sauce (AKA chili sauce); more properly, you want a "coney hot", but you can play it safe and say "coney with hot sauce" and they'll grok ya. Fries with cheese sauce are a must as a side. Me, I like a birch beer as well, because again, are you going to find a birch beer at Bennigan's? Enjoy a stroll through Onondaga Lake Park while you're here; time your visit in Nov-Dec and you can tool through Lights on the Lake as well.

Burl M.

Yelp
We went here because my wife grew up in the area and couldn't stop talking about how great the place was. We both ordered a hot dog each, I had a soft drink and she had a chocolate milk (because you're supposed to). When she asked what I thought I said I was a bit disappointed at the size of the hotdog for the cost. She said it has definitely changed over the years. We talked with other people and the agreed that it wasn't the same. We then walked over to the ice cream shop and had a cone to top off our stomachs.. the ice cream was delicious but the service was lacking.
google avatar

Paul C.

Yelp
OMG HEIDS HAS NOW COMPUTERIZED THEIR PROCESS. I was there today and NOT crowded. It took 23 minutes to get two hot dogs and a chocolate milk. WHAT THE HECK. New process. You enter, place order with person at drink area. They then ask your name and you move along. Then you pay. Once you pay they used to give you your food and off you go. Now, they take your money and then you go around to the back side and wait for your order. Today, that process took 9 minutes. I could see my two hot dogs sitting on the counter with eight other orders getting cold. I waited my turn and finally got my order after that staff person checked his computer and called out my name. What normally would be a five minute process took me 23 minutes today.... BOO BOO BOO... Heids, your new computer process DOES NOT WORK... EVERYONE WAS COMPLAINING. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Bring back the paper plates & crayon marker.
google avatar

Yelp
Always a hometown go to for comfort food. The service is quick and the food is always fresh.
google avatar

Honest A.

Yelp
Classic hot dog stand. One of the few places to get birch beer. Unfortunately it's often a very long wait to order and get food; with a packed line that is uncomfortable once you get in the door. A good spot for a dog if you don't have to wait
google avatar

Laura R.

Yelp
The topics toppings that I raved about last time no longer exist... It's just plain juicy hot dogs and ketchup, mustard, onions, and relish. Still long lines that barely move and staff inside aware they are understaffed and overwhelmed, therefore telling curbside orders to come inside because they can't spare any workers in running out. It's confusing how to get back to inside seating once you're through the line without going back into the original door again so we just ate outside under the umbrellas. 2 dogs, 1 medium drink, fries special was $13. Locals love it and the hot dog brand but coming from Buffalo, I just don't get the local hype
google avatar

Lord R.

Yelp
Coneys we're good. Soda WAY OVER PRICED. Dining area dusty as seen on the black area under pipe rail. Pumps on canisters of mustard do not pump smoothly, need cleaning. Tip jars on counter EVEN THOUGH you serve yourself like in a cafeteria setting. If employees need tips for handing you food in a cafeteria like line then it must mean employer not paying employees enough.
google avatar

Blair F.

Yelp
Stopped in with my son after a visit to the mall. Things have changed since I was last here. They've expanded the order line area (which makes total sense) and moved the condiment station to the end of the new hallway (brilliant!). The food remains much the same with a few new additions (which we did not try). I got the Texas Hot on a frank (which was spicier than I cared for) an order of onion rings (massive and perfectly done). My son got the sausage, peppers and onions and fries with a soda. It was nice to visit again. But, there was sticker shock when the bill came. Gone are the days of a cheap lunch.

Yelp
Stopped in to Heid's at about 3:00 on a Monday. I've been here plenty of times before, though not since the pandemic and typically in the summer. The spot was understandably emptier than I've ever seen it. The staff was friendly and the service was prompt as there was no line. One of the gentlemen working came and bussed my tray for me because it was so dead, I certainly appreciated that. It's kind of a cafeteria style deal if you've never been. Honestly a bit of an anxiety inducing endeavor during the crowded summer months, not so much so today. It should also be noted that the way the place is laid out you have to back track the entire line to get back to the dining room. One of the more miserable experiences seeing as how you're balancing food on a cafeteria tray and trying to navigate a very, very narrow space that's occupied by all manner of people. The food is standard American fare, most noted for their hotdogs- which are admittedly pretty good. On this visit I had a mixed Double which is a German frank and a coney (white hot) on a singular bun. Again there's logistics issues with two dogs in one bun, but it saves carbs so take it for what you will. I had cheese fries as a side and they were pretty disappointing. The fries themselves were fine, the cheese was not very good- didn't taste like much of anything really, I'll just skip the cheese next time. Now, the most glaring issue besides the nightmare hellscape that is the line/ordering process is the price. I always remember it being just a little more than I'd expect and that was pre-pandemic. My mixed Double, regular cheese fries, and a bottled water came to $13.50. From my perspective, that's real steep for this type of fare. Hard to imagine coming with a family. Seems rough. Heid's, for me, probably actually deserves a three. The price and the logistics, especially during the peak Summer months, make the place better in theory than in practice. That being said, I gave it a four based on my positive off-month visit where the staff made the difference. I'll come back, but not really sure when.

Yelp
Yet another milkshake review. And yes, it was strawberry but I can't help myself. This was a very decent shake. Thick, tasty and fruity. Only complaint, easily rectified, was a paper straw which just collapsed. They replaced with a plastic one All good.

John S.

Yelp
Same ol' Heid's. Hot dogs and conies. The ice cream is above average. Every time a relative comes to visit, they want to go to Heid's, so we do. Probably of their younger days.

Yelp
First time at Heid's and we loved it. Great atmosphere, love an old - been around forever - restaurant. Awesome staff! Delicious food!!! We'll be back !

Yelp
A Liverpool staple. If you come to Liverpool, or cuse for that matter take the trip and stand in line. Have a white hot and some fries and enjoy a classic. Plain and simple. You're welcome.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Heid's of Liverpool (that's New York, not the place in England where an upstart band called the Beatles got their humble spot) is a great spot to grab the classic American meal of a hot dog with some french fries. Both are great. Since Liverpool is a suburb of Syracuse, New York, the hot dogs are Hofmann's, a great hot dog brand that is a hot dog standard in this part of New York. I wish more restaurants would use them here in Florida, but at least I can get them in Publix. They offer a bunch of toppings to go with their hot dogs. The natural casing definitely makes it a superior hot dog. Try the chili, it is definitely a winner. They also have sausage made by Gianeli. A very good sausage from a reputable sausage maker. In addition, they offer stuff like cheesesteaks, grilled cheese, and the like. This is definitely a landmark in central New York. They have been in business over a hundred years and honestly, they will probably go for another hundred years if you judge the place by the lines that form to get their products. I definitely give this place an inspired recommendation and two energetic thumbs up. Be warned it is a bit on the higher price side, but I do not mind paying for good food and honestly, it is not much more than what you would pay at a fast food restaurant. Again, I recommend that you give this place a try. I am sure you will return.
google avatar

Jay T.

Yelp
The most delicious frankfurter I've had since I was in Germany. Can't wait to return on our next cross-country sojourn.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
I love hot dogs so I was so happy to find this place. The hot dogs are great and fries are delicious. I felt that the hot dog bun was a bit small and flimsy but was still good. They have a lot of toppings you can put in take home containers.
google avatar

Brendan H.

Yelp
Ordering process was strange and there was no signs to give direction. You order sides first then your dogs. I can't imagine the chaos in warmer weather. Staff was helpful. Hot dogs were good.
google avatar

T. L.

Yelp
This is a staple in CNY family friendly restaurants. The best place to get Hoffmann hotdogs.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Heid's is a Syracuse staple. It's the kind of place you bring out of town travelers for a treat. A classic style lunch counter restaurant in Liverpool, it hits the all American vibe hard. The Good: you can walk in hear pretty much any day of the week and get a quick and delicious meal for lunch or super casual dinner. The Hot Dogs and coneys are phenomenal and the main draw at this place so do yourself a favor and get one and don't forget to top it with their spicy brown mustard. The Bad: I have to say, that in the past year or so the prices have risen significantly in my opinion. Now, it is COVID times and employees are hard to find as well as food prices rising, I get it, but $50 for Hot Dogs (we also get sides from the grill) for a family of four is a bit steep. As a result, we only go once in a while as a treat. Finally: I am a fan of Heid's and would definitely recommend it if you find yourself in Liverpool and are hungry, stop in. The service is quick and friendly. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Love Heid's a classic must go!! They have the best hotdogs. We love having lunch, ice cream and going to the park across the street! Be sure to grab some fresh Byrne dairy chocolate milk

Yelp
Perfect spot to stop on our trip from Boston to Chicago. Clean, good food, great local favorite.

Angela R.

Yelp
3.5 Stars overall. Sometimes, I just get a hankering for cheese fries. Service was super fast, and the restaurant seemed to be taking precautions. The cheese sauce was different than expected. Not bad, per se, but most neon yellow cheese sauce tastes the same everywhere, while this one was a little different. The price wasn't bad, just over three bucks, though a few other items, like the mozzarella sticks, are a tad pricey. To be fair, I didn't try the mozz sticks, so maybe they totally merit the pocket change. 5 stars for the decor, 50's diner vibes, with plenty of seating outside. If you want a quick snack, this isn't a bad stop.

Yelp
Everything about this place is awesome except the Coneys. Been going here on and off since I was little. Hoffman's ruined them. If you remember them way back when, they were bigger and tasted so much better. Staff is dope!

Yelp
Heid's is a favorite and a must if you're in liverpool. They have the best food and they're even at the NY State Fair every year. Give them a try you won't be disappointed!
