Helen Browning's Royal Oak, Wiltshire, UK - Explore & Book

"In the pretty hamlet of Bishopstone, tucked at the foot of the Wiltshire Downs, Helen Browning (Soil Association CEO and organic farming pioneer) has created a little haven of good food, sound sleep and healthy outdoor living, with help from her partner Tim Finney and a wonderfully enthusiastic young team. This is far more than a pub. A second building houses 12 quirky bedrooms with farmy artworks, blissful mattresses, clawfoot tubs and the odd designer piece; plus a 'Wallow' room for table football, old vinyls to spin, and a wide-ranging honesty bar. There are shady gardens and sheltered outdoor dining spots to relax with a book, or a pint of golden Arkells, or a plate of succulent home-grown pork belly with salsa verde and fresh picked salad. A small shop sells organic produce (mostly their own), while down the lane lies a private campsite by a secluded brook, and grassy picnic spots where you can graze on one of their lovingly crafted hampers. Around you are 1500 hectares of mixed working farm to explore, ideally as part of a guided farm safari. Spot rare corn buntings, trilling skylarks, wheeling kites; visit rewilded hedgerows and experimental fruit orchards; watch piglets snuffle at your feet. Or head off along the ancient Ridgeway trail to the White Horse and Iron Age fort of Uffington. This is a wonderful opportunity to disconnect from devices and reconnect with nature. Highs We love the friendly, low-key vibe which Tim and his team have created: a warm, sincere welcome, including dogs and muddy boots Our farm safari was an unexpected highlight: James' passion ranges from yellowhammers to riverine ecosystems Dinners and breakfasts are simply delicious: you can't beat the meat for freshness! The location is ideal for a weekend break from London, Bristol, or the Midlands: all within 1-2 hours' drive Superb value too, with rooms starting from £100 or less Lows In terms of services, this is more pub than hotel (no reception desk, for example); but there's always someone around to help No drawers or wardrobes for storing belongings, which could be annoying for longer stays Apart from Uffington's White Horse and hillfort, there are no stellar 'attractions' here: just miles of beautiful rural countryside" - Michael Cullen

We just wanted to share how delightful Helen Browning's Royal Oak was for our two-day stay in October. We stayed here the night before and after our wedding, which was taking place approximately 25 minutes away. We booked out nine rooms with complicated arrangements, and the team were nothing but accommodating and understanding of our requirements. The rooms were fantastic - spacious, clean, inviting and cosy - an absolute treat for everyone. The pub itself was friendly with lovely, fresh food, and a full cooked breakfast available. We asked the team to run a pub quiz for the wedding party so that everyone could get to know each other and they delivered this with perfection! We all had so much fun. Check-in and check-out was smooth, but located in a somewhat dangerous shop (almost everyone ended up buying something delicious to take home!). We cannot recommend this pub enough for food, drinks and accommodation, it is full of fantastic people who absolutely go above and beyond. We can't wait to come back on our anniversary!

We called in for a 2 night break away from Bristol to revisit some ancient landmarks and get some steps in. A friendly professional welcome at every turn from the hard working team. And then there was Tim, too. Did I mention ancient monuments already? We had settled on the Royal Oak after checking out good food reviews in the area and were not disappointed. The organic ingredients were largely piggie based, and completely worth it. Our room was good value, uncomplicated and had all the essentials. Fabulous stay, darlings. Get yourself round there, you will not be disappointed.

Lunch with my son and daughter yesterday was my 10th visit since I discovered this gem of a pub 3 months ago 20 mins from my new home in Castle Eaton. It's worlds away from the typical British pub and all in a good way. Tim and his staff are all lovely and the food and beer are always excellent. Each of my previous visits apart from one breakfast was to eat and drink in the wonderful garden but the quiet ambience and lovely aroma from the kitchen when we ate in the downstairs bar yesterday was very comfortable and relaxing. If I didn't have such a great pub in my village this would be my regular. A great place from which to walk. And Uffington White Horse hill and fort are 10 mins away. The 'don't tell anyone' perhaps should be changed to; be careful who you tell, as pubs like this need the support of appreciative customers.

By far the best British pub experience you can get. Great organic food grown on the farm in the village. An open fire, extensive wine list and choice of well kept beer. Quirky and comfortable! Delicious breakfast with THE best bacon.

Beautiful pub with large cosy rooms, completed with kettle and Nespresso coffee machine. A lovely guest room is available with music, books and honesty bar. The location is fantastic, in a calm tiny village. Lots of walking tracks available. Very close to the city. Recommended

We stayed here for 2 nights. The place is busy, the food is out of this world. There are young staff members who very happily look after you and make it their mission to make your stay memorable and welcoming.|We were staying for a nearby wedding. The pub and hotel are about 20mins out of Swindon. No problem, its under £20 in a taxi. But when you are there. Tim, looks after you. He drove us to the wedding, arranged someone to pick us up at 11pm to take us back to the hotel and drove us to the train station when we left. I think this is what the world used to be like, when people really cared about the experience of others and looked after customers. It was such a welcoming happy environment we are looking for reasons to go back.. |The rooms are comfortable and our room was large and v comfortable by any hotel standards. |Ask for anything and they will try and make it happen. |Dinner was a set in a welcoming, rustic restaurant/ pub with more than enough staff to assist. Young bright polite people looked after us . THE best ribs ever - organic, from the farm and a gorgeous large mackeral. |If you’re staying in the hotel, there’s an honesty bar and a lounge with fridge , milk , drinks etc andrea and coffee making facilities in rooms. |Dyson hairdryers, room fans. It’s honestly difficult to know where to stop this positive review. The owners are passionate believers in the customer experience, organic food, and a wholesome friendly atmosphere. It’s really difficult to see how anyone could give this place a negative review. |We loved it. |PS the farm shop on site is superb. |Thank you Tim and staff for giving us a bubble of wonderful memories for 48hrs. The world needs more of this

I was treated to lunch at the Royal Oak on Sunday, I haven’t had a better roast, anywhere, ever. It truly felt like my lunch had been made just for me. The fact that everything on my plate came from the farm is incredible. The staff were exceptional, friendly and attentive without being intrusive. I can’t wait to return.
