This is a must stop place if in town. Burritos are great in size and flavor! I had the Admiral burrito and it was everything I expected after being directed here by many locals. Friday night was busy and after placing my order it would be a 30 minute wait, but I just walked around and checked out the area and came back. Unless you are dining in, might save you time to call and order ahead of time on the weekends, but don't miss out on this place!

This is a must visit place if you like fresh scratch made food in good quantities. The burritos are huge and better bring an appetite. Cool fun decor and atmosphere. Great selection of microbrews and other unique non-alcoholic drink selections.

We were a family of four staying at the Blackwater Lodge, who stopped at this place as it had good ratings both in Yelp and Google. Being vegetarians, we had some options with burritos and tacos. The portion size can be large, so be cautious when you order. After we sat down to eat, we heard the lady behind the counter explain to another customer that there are smaller portions available if requested. Wish we had known this earlier. The seating can get cramped so you may want to get a place that is comfortable. When we arrived around 1:00 pm for lunch the front section and upstairs were all completely full. The veggie burritos and tacos were delicious and seemed like a good option in a small place like Davis. Recommended

Google
This was my first stop after hiking Dolly Sods and the staff was very friendly and welcoming. This place wasn't very big but packed lots of character. I got a chicken, bacon, and ranch burrito that definitely hit the spot after a long hike. The burritos are MASSIVE and quality ingredients. This place is a must stop in Davis, WV.

Google
Great place to stop for lunch. Shredded beef tacos were filling, didn't skimp on the ingredients and had a great flavor. The seating is limited, but it appears a lot of customers order their food to go, at least when I was there (~noon on a Friday). If you're passing through town, definitely stop, you won't be disappointed.

Google
You better come hungry to this small quaint local burrito place in Davis,WV. Seating is limited, it's on a first come first serve basis. You can place an order "to go" and if in-house seating comes available you can snag it and enjoy your meal there. You can save half of your burrito for the next day or if you're hungry enough, you can eat the whole thing and not be hungry for the rest of the day! The atmosphere is cozy and the staff is very inviting and welcoming. They have local beers on tap and some others too. You can get some merch if you're just in town visiting. Definitely a great place to check out.

Google
I ordered the face plant burrito. It was very bland with the exception of the jalapeños. They loaded it with rice and that is mostly what I tasted. The fritos were soggy. The burritos were huge!! The chips and salsa were great! The green chili was amazing! Great beer selection! The place is small, but cozy. You have to go up to the bar to order and bust your own table.

Google
If you want delicious, clean burritos/tacos/etc. then look no further. Match the high quality food with over and above staff and you have a recipe for success! The restaurant has a very nice layout as well. Checked them out on a Sunday afternoon and was serviced quickly!

Yelp
Delicious and very large burritos! My choice (The Admiral) was both my lunch and my later dinner. Friendly staff, good prices

Yelp
3.5/5 After working up an appetite hiking Seneca Rocks, we headed back to Davis for burritos. You can order to go or at the bar and then seat yourself. There's upstairs seating and a handful of tables of different sizes in the front room. You're gonna feel awkward no matter where you want to stand in line to order. The guacamole is freshly made daily. It was a generous portion and better than I expected, if not a tiny bit under-salted. The chips were standard, it would really elevate things if they were made in house too. We had two hefty burritos that came out quick, and they didn't skimp on ingredients. The classic chicken burrito with cilantro lime rice, black beans, cheese and tomatillo hot salsa (3/5) and a specialty burrito "The Shovelhead" which was seitan in barbeque sauce with their horseradish coleslaw, rice, & cheddar jack cheese (4/5). It's worth noting that any burrito can be ordered as a bowl. The Shovelhead gets credit for uniqueness of ingredients, flavor profile, and overall it was texturally pleasing. Would order again! The chicken in my burrito was simultaneously a bit on the dry side, and the salsa was inexplicably sweeter than one would want a hot salsa to be. That said, I would totally order it again and make use of the hot sauces that were off to the side. I sadly didn't notice them until I went to bus my table :( the Frank's red hot on each dining table seemed a weird choice for the establishment so I was bummed to realize later that there were several other options (like cholula, el yucateco - both standard roja and verde) in a designated but easy to miss spot. Burritos are pretty much a main food group in our diet. We don't drink but there were some cool rotating taps. They had some other offering too, like kombucha and both sweet and unsweetened bottled tea. To sum it up, at $50 incl tip, this lunch for two was filling and perfectly acceptable.

Yelp
filthy red food baskets reused withiut washing tables were not cleaned between patrons food on table chairs and floor no one cleaning dining area bathrooms were marginal front door had not seen a cleaning in months. food was good but i never saw the kitchen cashier was handilng food without washing hands after handling money. with covid starting up again beware of this restaurant

Yelp
Burritos are always big and yummy with fresh ingredients. Service is so so, we felt a little pressured when we were making our order because we had to find a table before ordering. Atmosphere is fine, find a seat- somehow make it yours and get down to ordering your food.

Yelp
We stumbled on this place while visiting Timberline. We had two dogs with us so we couldn't eat in. We decided to place an order to go. Got back to the lodge 30 minutes later only to find that one of the burritos that we ordered was missing. Bummer. Couldn't go back as we were too far away. Cute place, much bigger than it appears. Large portions of food. Queso and chips were awesome.

Yelp
Hellbenders is a must stop every time we visit Blackwater Falls. What a cool place. It appears small from the road but there is plenty of seating upstairs and down. We tried the gravity check burrito was amazing (chicken/bacon/ranch etc.) and the soft beef tacos. The food is delicious and so fresh. The pricing is slightly above average but it's worth it!!

Yelp
My husband and I came across this place while looking for a place to celebrate our anniversary, most places around this area have been shut down. It's definitely not what I have chosen for our anniversary dinner but it was a neat little place with really good food. There wasn't a whole lot of seating, it was busy so we were too close to other people for my liking. You order downstairs at the bar and then they bring your food to you - cans of pop so no free refills etc - they do have a big pitcher of water at the bar where you can serve yourself. The food was really good, I ordered the Admiral and my husband ordered the Hellbender and we got chips and queso. The servings are very good, we both took half our burritos home and half the queso. If you like Chipotle you'll like this place, very similar in taste.

Yelp
Overrated overpriced. Food was good but nothing special other than being located in a small town. Owner is a jerk who refused to let me use the WiFi even though reception in the town is pathetic.

Tina K.

Yelp
Never had the food. It wasn't what I expected at all. The beer was overpriced and the place has hardly any to no seating. 4 tables crammed upstairs in a tiny little room where you rub elbows with the table next to you. If you going out to drink and that's it, go on over. I won't go back.

Nicholas W.

Yelp
absolutely amazing food, we have gone here for the past 3-4 years and absolutely love this restaurant!! Keep doing what you're doing Hellbenders it's amazing! As an afternoon activity I would also highly recommend going to the stumptown ales right across the street, and lastly the trailhead coffee shop has the best coffee and hot chocolate ever! And all this is allowed in with you at hellbenders!! Except the alcohol of course but hellbenders has a pretty incredible selection!!

Dakota W.

Yelp
Got my order wrong, didnt know until halfway through my meal because the ingredients were so abysmally spread. 90% rice. Water tasted funky. The burritos are pretty flavorless, you're better off going anywhere else in town. The music they play is pretty obnoxious hipster stuff if you're into that.
google avatar

Pam L.

Yelp
Burritos are great the best ever had but so big that you need to split them with somebody
google avatar

Yelp
BQ very good in a burrito. So many choices, you'll want to revisit to try them all. Seating is tight, because it's always busy. Rustic looking interior, it goes well with the area.

Yelp
Def seemed like a local favorite. Small place along the main street. There were some tables inside but we had a big group and opted to take our food. y nearby picnic benches. I got a burrito bowl. Fun vibes inside for sure. Since we sat outside, we couldn't try the local brews and opted for lemonade instead which came in a variety of different flavors. SO good!!

Kathryn G.

Yelp
Great service and the food was delicious! I would make a trip back to the area just to eat there.

Yelp
The food was amazing! Service was super fast and friendly. Great recommendations made by staff. We will definitely return next time we are in Davis.

Yelp
Great beer, burritos, and service right on main st. A Davis staple. Super relaxed/cozy space. Go get some!

Yelp
Just stumbled upon this place during a hiking trip to Blackwater Falls. The space is a bit tight, and it was ~80% full (which was a good sign). I think they are well known for their beer/alcohol as well! Basically, 1) you seat yourself 2) order food/drinks at the counter 3) they bring you the food by calling your name in the dining room The person we ordered from was so kind, but she forgot to apply our military discount after stating she would give it to us...which was a bit of a bummer. I gave them a pretty good tip too bc she said she would apply it. We found out after we asked for a paper copy bc apparently thr receipt automatically sends to the email but we never got it via email. We got the chips and salsa, the Admiral, the Shovelhead, and pulled pork tacos (3). * The salsa was AMAZING SO SO SO SO GOOD * unfortunately, the chips weren't anything special. They were kind of like the pre-made mediocre nacho chips that you find in the movie theaters * My party really enjoyed their burritos and my tacos (3) were so flavorful and scrumptious. The tacos come with a choice of flour soft tortillas or corn soft tortillas. Overall, definitely recommend trying this place out! The burritos and tacos were delicious!

Yelp
Huge I had the namesake, spicy and creamy. Great meal after some primo hiking! Great tap list and tasty local kombucha available too.

Yelp
Professional cook review. Stopped in here because of the good reviews, but really wish I didn't. First impressions were good. Very busy and a definite eclectic vibe. Then I read the menu. I assumed that "burrito" meant this was a Mexican restaurant, but I was wrong. Their specialty burritos contain items like Buffalo chicken, cucumbers, tofu, barbecue sauce, etc. I chose the Gendarme burrito because it was listed as "shredded beef, onions, peppers, and queso". It was nothing more than a bad cheesesteak rolled up in a tortilla. There was no seasoning in the meat or the cheese and they used plain white rice. The only condiments offered were Frank's Red Hot, Tabasco, and a bottled habanero sauce. Now I realize this is in West Virginia, but mexican food in the US has been popular for a few decades now. There is no excuse to serve anything this bland. My final impression is that this is a restaurant operated by white vegans, using cultural appropriation to draw in customers, while relying on tourism (instead of repeat customers) to stay in business. My recommendation is to put a little effort into researching recipes that are truly Mexican and STILL can be served as a vegan/vegetarian option. At least learn how to make a ranchero sauce.

Yelp
Cute & eclectic burrito spot in the heart of Davis, WV. We stopped on our way to Blackwater Falls but it honestly would've been better post-hike. The burritos are GIGANTIC. Perfect way to refuel! I had a classic burrito with shredded beef and it was loaded with the works. They give you a choice of regular rice or cilantro lime, i went with the cilantro lime and it was really flavorful. Unfortunately I was only able to eat half the burrito but it was delicious. They also have a great draft list so you can try some local beers. Recommend to anyone in the area, but especially after being active!
google avatar

Meggie S.

Yelp
Note: this is not a professional chef review. My husband and I thought this place was great. Cozy vibe inside- order food and drinks at the counter and go find yourself a seat. We both ordered bowls and they were probably the best we've had. Most places will fill the majority of the bowls with rice. These bowls has a very tiny layer in the bottom and then the rest of the bowls were filled with actual food- well done!

Virginia B.

Yelp
Fresh food, great vibe. Fabulous draft beer variety. Loved the guacamole, burritos, and pork+green chile soup/stew.

Rania B.

Yelp
There is absolutely no way you can advertise this as a "burrito". What kind of burrito has buffalo chicken in it and plain WHITE RICE. I had two cubes of chicken, a ton of white rice, and an ounce of sour cream. This isn't a burrito, it's what your mom packs you for lunch when she's running late to work and had no time to cook anything up and it ends up being so bad everyone at school makes fun of you. Thank god my mama at least knows how to season her chicken. Then I could bear to eat a monstrosity with only white rice, chicken, and sour cream wrapped up into a cold excuse of a tortilla. GO FIND A MEXICAN RESTAURANT AND REBRAND YOURSELF. If you're not gonna do that then maybe call the restaurant "Hellbender wraps"

Yelp
I love this place like a fat kid loves Little Debbie Cakes! Food, atmosphere and staff; All great! Davis itself is just one of the coolest little towns there is. Very quaint, very friendly and very hip. I have ate here several times and have never been disappointed. I personally always get a vegan or vegetarian burrito as most can be made that way and boy oh boy are they stupendously delicioso in every possible way. I don't think there is anything on this menu that isn't good to be honest. I've taken several of my friends here to eat as well who aren't vegan or vegetarian and they love it just the same. Also, there isn't a bad time of year to come to this area and enjoy a nice day of outdoor activities and finish it off with a nice fat burrito and a couple craft beers. Thanks Guys!!!

Yelp
We tried to go here on a Saturday at 6pm where our food was going to be an hour wait. We decided to come back the next day for lunch and learned quickly that it was well worth it! The burritos are amazing! We were glad we didn't get the chips (although the amount of guacamole and salsa was also huge) because the burrito was so filling. They also had an excellent selection of beers. Will definitely be coming back!

Never Stop Day Dreaming D.

Yelp
We came up to West Virginia for snowboarding and after a long day of falling this honestly made me feel better. The hellbender is definitely the move. Better than anything in nc

Ardavan H.

Yelp
Definitely super misleading with the 4 star rating. Tastes like you put your face in salty sand. Everything is terrible and just tastes bad. Service is okay, long lines just very misleading and not worth anything at all. The place itself is cool with artwork and cool vibes.

Bailey B.

Yelp
Excellent food! We've been here a bunch and know they have a different service model. Staff are friendly and it's a cozy place to eat.
google avatar

Scott P.

Yelp
The Admiral burrito might be the best burrito I have ever had! With the salsa amazing! Staff was nice enough. But they are still in the getting used to turning themselves into a tourist town you can tell. Like a slight tinge of chip on their shoulder. Not sure why. They get to live in this amazing place and vacationers tip well.

Yelp
Hellbenders was closed so VERY long we wondered if they would ever reopen. On our trip the weekend of October 13th we were excited to see they finally were open. I wasn't feeling great so my fiancé went to get food to go over the weekend. Almost two hours later he returned with the food and explained he didn't know what was going on. They weren't busy yet it took over 45 minutes to get two burritos to go. Nothing special just burritos off the menu. I am not sure when they reopened but I hope they can get their act in gear. It was always hectic even before Covid but the quality of our food and the extreme amount of time it took for a to-go order makes me wonder if they can stay open.
google avatar

Gerrit D.

Yelp
"Gravity check!" Don't let the fact that it's your only burrito option make you doubt that it's your best burrito option. Because it is. Service is friendly, burritos are world class, and the drink selection is robust. My only complaint was the wait and there's not much you can do when it's the most popular lunch place on a festival weekend. Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Ali P.

Yelp
This is a very cute local restaurant! The atmosphere is good and the service was great! The portions for the burritos are huge and they have very unique options or build your own. I highly recommend the guacamole! I haven't been to any other restaurants in the area for comparison, but I would go back if I was driving through again!

Virgina H.

Yelp
Should be good, could be good. I am with Scott, server had a chip on her shoulder. Food wasn't bad but could be so much more. The building and decor was pretty cute inside and out.
google avatar

Freddy F.

Yelp
Best place in Davis for a after-hike meal and beer. I always order The Admiral because I don't think burritos should have rice in them, but to each their own
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Fantastic food with several vegetarian & also vegan options! Also have excellent local craft beer on tap. Friendly staff. One of the highlights of my trip to WV!
google avatar

Yelp
Very cool little place here in Davis, WV. Grab your table then go and order. We got the chips and queso as a starter then my husband got their signature Hellbender burrito and I got the Admiral. Best dang burrito ever! Draft beer, margaritas and sangria available too. Very busy, which says "yes, this place is worth a try!"

Sean H.

Yelp
We have been regular visitors to the Davis area for years, yet today was the first time we took a chance on this wonderful establishment. Anyone who knows the area is familiar with a few good restaurants that are often packed, so that is not an issue for us. That said, on a busy Saturday we were greeted by friendly staff who provided myself and the family with a rundown on the ordering process. We took menus to the nearest table, made our choices, and ordered. The staff member was kind and talkative, allowing that it might be about 15-20 minutes. No problem. She delivered our order in less than 10 minutes. We took it home (as we requested originally) and enjoyed it! When parents and kids all agree, it is a good sign. The restaurant proper is nicely decked-out in items that are both informative as well as eye-catching. If you find yourself in Davis, I would recommend Hellbender Burritos. In particular, the Shovelhead. Amazing!!
google avatar

Ashley P.

Yelp
I saw pictures of these burritos was was really excited to come here. We ordered food to go and it was ready within only a couple of minutes. My friend and I ordered the Admiral burrito and some chips and salsa. The burritos are huge! They don't play around when it comes to portion size! As far as the taste...eh. It wasn't bad, but also wasn't anything I would get too excited about. It was also really hard to eat after we cut it in half. It just kept falling apart and we ended up having to eat it with the chips from our salsa. As far as the salsa went...again, eh. It was okay. Chunky, but was watery and kind of flavorless. It's a small town without many options, so I wouldn't tell you not to go there...just don't expect greatness. I would try somewhere else the next time I was in town, but wouldn't starve myself if this was the only place open.
google avatar

Kayla H.

Yelp
We were pleasantly surprised by how cozy it was in here. It was about 19F outside and the little wood stove was near heaven. We ordered queso and chips as well as a the specialty burrito with the garlic buffalo sauce (can't remember the name, maybe it was The Hellbender). We had it with shrimp instead of chicken. The queso was fake cheese, but gratifyingly tasty. The burrito was good, but SPICY! My lips were tingling and burning. I wish the menu had noted it was spicier than normal buffalo sauce. When we're back in the area, we'll come back!

Yelp
Loved this unassuming place in the middle of nowhere, West Virginia! We stopped there to grab something to eat before going to see the Blackwaters Falls State Park. We weren't expecting a lot from Davis, but this place definitely stood out as an unexpectedly good location. First of all, the food here is really good! The chips and salsa/guac were absolutely amazing and the burritos were as well on par. Not only the burritos were delicious, they were well-packed as well, making them impossible to finish even for someone as hungry as we were. The internal decoration here is amazing as well - the wooden interior, abundant wall-decoration and elements of rusticness of West Virginian interior, such as a burning cast iron stove, all combined into a timeless and location-less feeling, just giving to that place a special, particular vibe that was just so enjoyable. The service was great as well - not too insistent, not trying to be overly friendly, but always there, always on point. I would absolutely recommend this place, even if it means making a detour!
google avatar

Jen M.

Yelp
Came here twice in two days. They have very good appetizers and beer. The queso, spicy black bean dip and bean and cheese open quesadilla were delicious appetizers. The pale ale was great beer. I tried both the chicken and beef tacos and bothbeers ok. I wasn't as impressed with the burritos. My vegetarian friends liked the tofu and seitan burritos. The place is small and gets filled up fast, so you want to get there early enough before the crowd starts building up. We waited 30 mins for lunch and dinner, but we were a large group. The wait staff was friendly and super nice. If you want veggie food , I think this is one of the best in the area.

Carrie W.

Yelp
Place was packed, we ordered and waited for tables to open up. So glad we did. Food was amazing, cool atmosphere!
google avatar

Jen R.

Yelp
Love this place!!! Hopefully, they will reopen. We always stop here when we are in the area. The seitan was a welcome surprise.

Matthew B.

Yelp
Not worth the hour+ wait for Burritos. Staff needs to learn how to balance takeout orders with customers eating at the restaurant.
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
Awesome little joint, filled with cool and funky decor. The service and food is very good and price is too.

Susieq R.

Yelp
Amazing burritos!! Fresh ingredients and not greasy or heavy at all. The homemade guac was amazing as well. 10 stars!!!

Jill J.

Yelp
Went there on a recommendation and definitely didn't disappoint. Our chips, salsa and burritos were delicious. Plus the staff was amazing
google avatar

Emma J.

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch with some friends on our way to Blackwater falls. The name alone got us to stop, but the food would definitely bring me back!! The decor was a little different, but definitely fitting to the atmosphere- fun and unexpected. Their burritos are huge!! And so is their selection. It was hard to choose because everything sounded good. We ordered a black bean dip as an appetizer. It was spicy, but really good. They have quiet a few vegetarian options and you can order a bowl as a gluten free option!! I ordered the face palm burrito in a bowl with veggie chili. All their burritos come with a side of chips and cole slaw. I'm pretty picky about cole slaw, and this was good. I wish I had gotten more. My bowl was a little spicy, covered in cheese, and all around delicious.
