After working up an appetite hiking Seneca Rocks, we headed back to Davis for burritos.
You can order to go or at the bar and then seat yourself. There's upstairs seating and a handful of tables of different sizes in the front room. You're gonna feel awkward no matter where you want to stand in line to order. The guacamole is freshly made daily. It was a generous portion and better than I expected, if not a tiny bit under-salted. The chips were standard, it would really elevate things if they were made in house too.
We had two hefty burritos that came out quick, and they didn't skimp on ingredients. The classic chicken burrito with cilantro lime rice, black beans, cheese and tomatillo hot salsa (3/5) and a specialty burrito "The Shovelhead" which was seitan in barbeque sauce with their horseradish coleslaw, rice, & cheddar jack cheese (4/5). It's worth noting that any burrito can be ordered as a bowl.
The Shovelhead gets credit for uniqueness of ingredients, flavor profile, and overall it was texturally pleasing. Would order again!
The chicken in my burrito was simultaneously a bit on the dry side, and the salsa was inexplicably sweeter than one would want a hot salsa to be. That said, I would totally order it again and make use of the hot sauces that were off to the side. I sadly didn't notice them until I went to bus my table :( the Frank's red hot on each dining table seemed a weird choice for the establishment so I was bummed to realize later that there were several other options (like cholula, el yucateco - both standard roja and verde) in a designated but easy to miss spot.
Burritos are pretty much a main food group in our diet. We don't drink but there were some cool rotating taps. They had some other offering too, like kombucha and both sweet and unsweetened bottled tea.
To sum it up, at $50 incl tip, this lunch for two was filling and perfectly acceptable.
