Lisbon Was Just Named the Best Culinary City Destination in Europe — Here Are Must-eat Places, According to a Local

"Closer to Sao Bento, you’ll find not one but two Hello Kristof locations — its original location on R. do Poço dos Negros, and its new, larger spot at Rua de São Bento, 15. Both serve delicious caffeinated drinks, along with a small menu that’s ideal for a quick breakfast. Or, you can always grab one of its magazines on display and stay for a while. (And, if you happen to be wandering around Alfama, you can visit their third location just behind the National Pantheon Museum.)" - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. Hello, Kristof is where we had a nice and big breakfast on November 1st during our Lisbon trip. The place is spacious, relaxed, and well-kept, even the toilets were spotless. Since we were among the first customers that morning, everything came quickly and smoothly. A very pleasant start to the day. Surely recommended!

There was not a bad café in Lisbon that I found, but hello, kristof is at the top of the good ones! The food was delicious and so were the drinks! It had a very nice laid-back atmosphere and the servers were very friendly! I’d highly recommend checking it out!

Google
Loved the atmosphere, Iordered a smoked salmon toast but the avacado toast came. I went up to tell the waiter that I got a smoked salmon toast and she disagreed and claimed I ordered an avocado toast. The avacado toast itself was okay it was what you could expect from an avacado toast. The second thing that I ordered was a latte but this is the first time when I ordered a latte it came in a clear glass cup? Everyone else in the coffee store had a coffee mug with their drink so I was unsure why mine was different?

Delicious, reasonably priced breakfast with top coffee. Highly recommend. Very accommodating to English speakers but seems to be loved by locals too. Lovely staff. Some of the best scrambled eggs I have ever had in my life.

Google
The breakfasts are delicious — everything is fresh, nicely presented, and the portions are generous. I especially loved the flat white and the toast with salmon. The atmosphere is cozy, and the staff is friendly. The only downside is that the café is quite small.

Drinks: The dirty chai latte was well-made, with a sweet chai base and a slightly sour coffee note. It had a Starbucks-like profile, which makes sense considering the other coffee options here don’t really taste like coffee either—more like milk-based drinks with a coffee aftertaste. The cappuccino was underwhelming. The milk completely overpowered the coffee. It felt more like a generic coffee-flavored milk drink rather than something from a specialty coffee shop. Pastries: The pistachio soft cookie had a slight crunch on the outside but was mostly soft. Simply adding a few nuts on top doesn’t make it a pistachio cookie—it was filled with chocolate and tasted more like a chocolate chip cookie with pistachios rather than a proper pistachio-based treat. The vegan brownie was too dry and lacked the gooeyness that makes a brownie enjoyable. It felt like texture was sacrificed just to make it vegan, and honestly, a basic store-bought brownie would have been better. Overall Impression: The price is unjustified for what was served. The coffee lacks depth, and the drinks cater more to those who enjoy milk-heavy Starbucks-style beverages. If you appreciate actual coffee, there’s nothing for you here. If you prefer milk drinks, Starbucks offers a wider selection for a better experience. Overpriced and unremarkable. 16.50€ 2 coffees and 2 pastries. Thank you for the coffee

Google
I loved coming here on my trip to Lisbon! The girls working were sweet and the food presentation was beautiful and coffee AMAZING. I even bought coffee beans to bring home (although this was at the Alfama location). Cool concept with the magazines on the wall and an overall welcoming and warm place!

Google
Lovely coffee shop in Lisbon old town. No laptops but magazine to browse and great coffee and food.

Yelp
The place looks very cute and inviting from the inside. We stopped in for coffee and a quick bite to eat before some sightseeing. The people working here were very friendly and offered great suggestions. We ordered orange juice (fresh squeezed) and an avocado toast to share which were great and we enjoyed our time here.

Yelp
Super nice staff. Terrible cappuccino (the ratio of milk was very off). It was more like a latte... even though I asked for an extra shot. Had a pear/chocolate tart that had no flavor. The thought was nice. My boyfriend had the avocado toast and he really liked it!!

Yelp
This brunch spot was a place we knew we wanted to check out in Lisbon. Right when we stepped in we were instantly drawn by how dreamy and ideal this cafe was. Everything from the music, the seating, the plants, and large windows facing the colorful streets thrilled us. The menu featured a variety of delicious brunch options and I chose the Avocado Toast. I asked about the Juice of the Day which I thought was such a cute add on in the menu. The Avocado Toast was super light and airy, the avocados were smeared all over the toast and was creamy. The toast was crispy and the thinly shredded cucumbers was a refreshing finish. I love that the toast also came with a side of greens which looked stunning and tasted really good. I forgot the specific ingredients in the juice but it had a variety of fruits and it was so hearty. Definitely needed a juice to get me going throughout the day. This is definitely a great cafe to check out, it's located on a corner of a street and it felt lively to be in there and eat a healthy brunch.

Yelp
Where could I begin in telling you how special Hello, Kristof is? I've only made one visit there, and I know it excels in all the ways a coffee shop should. They make good coffee (I loved my iced Americano). Their food is quality (the vegan chia pudding was insane, otherwordly, etc.). They foster community through their seating arrangements (a big communal table plus three or four laptop-free tables). They are in tune with what makes a coffee shop aesthetically special (their font choices, use of plants, and selection of playful and indie magazines). They are artisanal and accessible, allowing anyone (someone quiet/studious, conversational, or both) to reach their food and beverage without possessing an intricate knowledge of coffee. They are in such a snug corner, and I loved their little window seat, too; just the thought of sitting in it and reading makes me happy. Highly recommend Hello, Kristof for your coffee needs while in Lisbon!

Yelp
Such a cute cafe, one of my favorite coffee shops in Lisbon. Great quality coffee and the space is decorated really beautifully. Love all the books and magazines in the space. The owner was also very sweet! Will definitely come back next time we visit.

Yelp
Small and cute little coffee shop! The vibes here were great, I only got to stop by once but it seemed like there were a lot of regulars and the staff were incredibly friendly. I loved the selection of books and magazines to browse while waiting! I only got a the oat and chia fruit bowl while I was here, but it was quality and delicious. I'll definitely be back to try the coffee!

Yelp
Toasts are so delicious and filling and the coffee is great too. Great atmosphere and customer service. Def recommend for breakfast if you're in the area!

Yelp
Phenomenal!!! Went one day to stop by for an afternoon cappuccino and returned the next for another and some brunch (the stunning avocado toast with cucumber that came with a small salad) Sweetest staff with great service and picture perfect food and ambiance. Great to sit for a while, but not a place to use laptops which was nice. Also a great location in Lisbon.

Yelp
Excellent. Cute little spot with delicious snacks and meals, great drinks, and wonderful service. Everyone there is very nice. Its a small place so you might have to wait for a table or take it to go but it is absolutely worth checking out!

Yelp
Hip and tiny, Hello, Kristof, is perfect for your caffeine needs. It's got a great vibe, but I opted for a takeaway cappuccino two days in a row, so I didn't spend any time inside. The cappuccino was fantastic. The staff is friendly and this spot is really cute. I'll be spending more time here and tasting more of the menu when I return.

Yelp
Wonderful coffee shop just a couple minutes from my Airbnb. I needed to get some work done before another day of exploring Lisbon and wanted to work and feel the energy of Lisbon. Just now a cable car with morning commuters zipped by the door. I came early and there was space and some customers eating breakfast. They have lots of alternative milk options and a fresh menu. I needed some vitamin C and got the Acaia bowl and an latte. Fresh, clean, inviting and cool magazines to read.

Yelp
I've been living in Lisbon for nearly two years and this is by far my favorite coffee shop. They've got delicious coffees, pastries and even some snacks! All the employees are kind and friendly (which is tough to find around Lisbon in my humble opinion) and the owner is a brilliant man. They also have one of the best (and unique) selection of magazines I've ever seen in a coffee shop. There is a lot of love and care that goes into this shop. You can feel it from the moment you walk in. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This business owner has a cool story. He worked in the magazine industry and fell in love with coffee. He opened up just about a year ago. He has been grinding ever since. His staff cares about their customers. Literally, you can't go wrong if you order one of their toasts. It's packed with flavor. Also, their espresso doesn't taste burnt. Their cold brew has a hint of earthiness at the end of the sip. I'd live here if I could.

Yelp
The place is very cute with very friendly staff, but coffee is on the acidic side. If you're like me who doesn't like acidic coffee, it's better to just get the food. :)

Yelp
I got a latte from here and it was pretty good. Very simple and modern on the inside. They offer free WiFi and the staff was very nice.

Yelp
Stumbled across this little gem after brunch on my visit to Lisbon! The vibe in here is so cool, very light and trendy with magazines lining the back wall. I got an americano and it was great. Although I did take it to go because all of the tables were full, I got to hang out while i was waiting for my drink and i really enjoyed the atmosphere.

Yelp
This place was a wonderful way to start a morning. The food and drinks were delicious and the magazines were entertaining. The atmosphere was light, airy and warm. Over all, perfect breakfast with the most buttery croissants ever!

Yelp
I'm visiting from Brooklyn... I drank the best latte of the week here. Lovely array of magazines to read while drinking my coffee. Kind baristas. Good people watching, too. A couple people on laptops, but they didn't dominate the space. Not sure if it's always good like that. I didn't try the food but it looked good. Only minus was that the wifi did not work.
