Helltown Brewing - Strip District

This was an awesome stop during our Pittsburgh weekend trip. A large outdoor area is available, but we stayed inside and relaxed between the bar and wine tasting zone. BBQ is available, and the beers were great, with friendly staff and quick service. Would definitely return next time I'm in the area.

Stooped in for a beer and beverage. Food looked solid but we didn't partake. Was early Sunday afternoon so wasn't super busy. Joint is big, likely hopping and fun at the right time of day. Their Pilsner was solid. German style, mostly true to form, would drink again. The bartender, who is DiCaprio's doppelganger, makes one hell of an old fashioned. Classic, no frills and made to order - pinch more sugar, light bitters. And he asked, super nice touch. Would go back. It's in strip so parking busy, but you already know that!

This place is fun in the summer when you can sit outside. Since the pandemic, opening times have been kind of weird and inconsistent so you may end up in front of shut doors. There's a lot of turnover among the staff and so their performance is pretty volatile too. If you have the patience to stick around, they got really good draft beers and the food is decent too, especially their pulled pork sandwich.

Really nice staff! Such a great selection of wines when you walk in to the left. Got some apis brand mead which I love. The atmosphere is nice and lots of seating. Lots of tap and beer options as well!

Ribs were tough, not falling off the bone tender. The strawberry salad was not nearly as good as the strawberry salad at Mod's pizza, Mac and cheese was just ok. The waiter was super nice. The food just didn't live up to the menu description. My husband didn't enjoy his skewered shrimp either. It was so expensive for such disappointing food. Nice atmosphere. Drinks were good.

Visited on a very late Friday afternoon and the place was nearly empty, though we were told that was fairly typical for that time. Whatever the case, I thoroughly enjoyed a flight of craft offerings, of both Helltown and a few 'guest taps.' They've got music playing both inside and out, with plenty of outdoor seating available. Parking in the Strip is the only downside here. I'll be back.

The food and beer tasting were good. The tasting also included mead and cider - if you selected. The staff and bartender didn't seem interested in serving anyone. I had to pass by several tables because they were dirty and had not been clears (one was still not cleared when I left). I sat to 10 minutes for anyone to greet or wait on me. The staff was all at the corner of the bar, sitting, talking, drinking. Liked the food and beer, but don't think would ever go back again.

Enormous space with plenty of TVs (they'll play whatever sports are happening), bar stools, and tables. The staff is super nice and the beer is top notch!! Weirdly quiet on a Friday night, but I certainly won't complain. They played awesome music!

We stopped by Helltown yesterday night from about 7:30pm until close with the primary purpose of doing live band karaoke with Lead Singer Wanted. The inside is huge with a good variety of picnic tables, high tops, and bar seating so it's a great place for a large group. They also have a spacious outdoor patio as well. It was pleasantly cold inside and I was glad the AC worked well, even with their high ceilings. They don't seem to have food there besides a few bags of chips behind the bar for purchase. I did see someone bring in a whole pizza so I'm assuming it's bring your own food. There's no table service and you wait in a designated queue at the bar to order. They take Apple Pay which was really convenient. They have a variety of different beers and cocktails. I thought my two beers I got were pretty reasonably priced. Live band karaoke itself was really fun and our group enjoyed it a lot. Sadly, it emptied out quite a bit throughout the night except for at the end when a large group randomly came in to sing the final song with everyone. Not sure why it was so slow since it was so fun!

Very spacious bar and patio area. Huge beer menu. Lots of flavors for a wide variety of tastes. The bartenders were helpful in deciding which beer suited my taste. Here offered samples to help me decide. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. The dining room is equipped with video games, pinball machines, and a claw machine. Gotta love old school arcade games. Nice outside patio complete with a stage for live entertainment. Definitely worth stopping by while visiting the Strip District downtown. Little pricy but that's to be expected being in town. Look forward to returning to try different seasonal beers.

Helltown is a great place to come for fun events or to just grab a drink. I came Thursday night with some friends after I had something for work in the strip. We were originally just planning on grabbing a quick drink before going to Pitt shack but ended up staying for awhile since they had a fun live band karaoke event going on. We all had a really fun time singing and the beer is both reasonably priced and good. They don't serve food however they have no problem with you eating food from somewhere else inside so it wasn't an issue at all.

Cool little beer garden in the heart of the Strip District. Very chill atmosphere. Dog friendly. Fun live music. Do not sell food, but you can bring it in from other places. I am not a beer drinker and had plenty of options (ciders, seltzers, mimosas).

I only experienced the outdoor space, but inside looks nice too (clean gender-segregated restrooms). My friend's bands was playing, so we bought drinks from Helltown and lunch from local places and enjoyed one of the first sunny weekends with amazing music and ambience. Careful: my Lyft driver was directed to the alley in the back rather than the entrances on Penn.

Located in the strip district it's got a lot of room both inside and outside for groups! They offer a large selection of IPAs. My husband got the brown ale, the "mysterious brown ale". He really enjoyed it, wasn't heavy at all. They do mot have a coder on tap but have Arsenal cider in cans (both the dry and semi-sweet). I got the Arsenal Event semi sweet cider and really enjoyed it. It's a good middle ground cider.

I had been to a different location of Helltown Brewing in the past so I was familiar with their offerings already. Since I had been drinking all day and was about to head to a music festival, I decided to hydrate a bit and ordered their hop water quencher mocktail. It was quite good and reasonably priced at $7. Service was prompt, the interior was expansive and clean, and the a/c was running. All around, I enjoyed my visit.

I went with a large group and there was plenty of space for us to mix and mingle. The bar tenders were friendly. I enjoyed my season mule. I didn't eat any food there as it was snacks like chips and pretzels.

We stopped here on a Friday night before dinner and mini golf. The bartender was super friendly, and even tried to help us with making up a new drink and telling us about all of the beers. We did not have any food, but would like to go back to try some!

We stopped by Helltown while in a visit to the Strip. Located across the street from the fabulous seafood store Wholey's. The space is large and open. We bellied up to the bar and were promptly greeted by the bartender. They were friendly and knowledgeable, and offered samples along with advice. Nice. We only tried beer during the visit and we were pleased with the offerings. I had a barleywine and a stout. Both were tasty and strong. Everyone enjoyed the beer and the coffee Porter was the favorite. When a companion is in the long hot food line at Wholey's, head over to Helltown and wait there. You'll be glad you did.

We didn't stay long enough so don't be mad at me for the 4 stars. I gave it 4 stars cause the atmosphere is fun, lively, and everyone's in a great mood listing to great music and all my buddies each got a different beer. We all loved our beers. Greta place to go and the staff as 100% on game

I've previously gone to helltown for their outdoor ambiance, and this was my first time going inside. It's a typical open concept brewery ambiance, but the live music definitely bumped up the ambiance. There isn't a ton of seating if you come in with a big group, but we were fine standing around a table & dancing to the music anyway! I don't think there is any wait service, or at least I didn't see any. Walk up bar service is pretty quick, though, and I really enjoyed my mango beer. If you want something other than beer, however, I was told by friends who tried to order liquor-based drinks that the bar was out of a lot (and we went on a Saturday, so this was surprising). One thing to note is that this brewery felt very overrun by families with small kids, so this definitely shifts the ambiance a little bit. Overall though, it was a fun spot that I'd go back to! I love this place! * Excellent service * Excellent beer * Excellent outdoor space I feel that most places in the strip just hit different than most other areas in and around the Pittsburgh area. Maybe it's wide variety of different people enjoying everything it has including a place like this with a simple yet cool exterior to the interior which draws you in to stay a little longer with its warmth. The last time I stopped by this place it had a lot of happy faces enjoying their outstanding beers. The lady bartender had a nice smile and was happy to serve us. I looked over the menu on the wall and it did look very good and especially from the food I saw coming out, but we weren't there to eat, only to enjoy a flight of beer and to purchase a beer glass for the collection. This is a cool place and it's outside seating area makes for a relaxing atmosphere to people watch when the weather is nice and all while enjoying a cold beverage and/or some excellent looking food. They have a beer called Lilith..... I mean if I could just leave it at that and give it 5 stars I would but I think Yelp has an algorithm against one word reviews and plus I am far too creative to leave it at that. Went here with the dudes and we truly enjoyed the entire experience. From our wonderful and friendly waitress, to the beer selection for flights, to the slamminnnnnnnn tasty smoked chicken salad sandwich and mac n cheese, ughhhh I wish I had both right now. Something about smoked chicken slaps so hard and it's not even a hard or complicated thing to do. It took it up ten notches and now I am forever judging all chicken salad against the top tier that is from Helltown. Hail Satan, and rescue cats.

I stopped by to get a beer and dinner, but apparently, they don't actually serve food anymore? They have food trucks in the evening some nights? Good beer and drink selection, but i think they could use an update on the food information.

What I found most interesting of this place was its cleanliness. Otherwise, the beer selection was very good and what we partook of was very good as well. Service was reasonably friendly and we made the most of our stay...

I was here recently on a beautiful weekend evening to have a couple of drinks. Downtown and the north shore were super busy. As we were driving around, we stumbled on Helltown Brewing in the strip. I was super shocked that this place was virtually empty. We went inside to order drinks (I think two people were inside) and then we went outside to enjoy the weather and our drinks. The inside is very large. This is a place you could enjoy all year round. The outside also has a large space with picnic tables scattered around. The employees told us that they do not serve food, but we could order delivery from somewhere if we wanted. I also heard that on weekends and certain evenings, they had live music and food trucks. This is a great place to catch up with friends or meet up with coworkers after work. I really had a great time here!

We were visiting and came here and had the best experience. The cocktails and beers are delicious. We had the blueberry bramble and the pumpkin spice latte White Russian. Both drinks made amazingly well by our friendly and talented bartenders. A definite stop for great quality drinks.

We started our good and drink fest here and I'm so glad we did! Great beer & food selections. I ordered the stuffed peppers and wasn't disappointed! They were cheesy and spicy and just ooey gooey goodness!! We were sitting at the bar and even though they were busy, we felt very well taken care of!

Stopped here to the outdoor beer garden area for one hazy ipa. They have Adirondack chairs, and picnic tables with umbrellas & are dog friendly. It was full under the umbrellas because it was quite hot in the sun. I ordered my beer from the outdoor stand not even realizing until later that there was a huge bar/restaurant inside. Definitely a great gathering place for summer. I didn't get to try the food or more then one beer, but the ambiance was great. I'd love to stop back. They have craft cocktails & wine too!

Such a great summer spot! You get the best all in one place- beer, wine, cocktails, outdoor seating, live music & delicious food. We were there last summer and it looks like the menu changes but what we had was great- pulled pork, Mac and cheese & tomato and corn salad. The outside space is pretty big and and good spot to hangout with friends. It was nice they had the live music outside, but I think this depends on the weather. They do have live music pretty often, check out their website for the dates & times!

We've been to 1700 Penn countless times in our just over 2 years of living in Pittsburgh. We really enjoy it! There's both a huge outdoor seating area with communal picnic tables, heaters, and a drink "shack" if you will, and a large indoor space. About 1/3 of the indoor part is a PA Libations wine shop, the other 2/3 are a big long bar with plenty of TVs for sports fans, and a mixture of high top & normal seating. There are plenty of windows, which make it a nice place to be during the day. They also offer lots of live music nights and trivia nights. I've only eaten here when they had Aviva brick oven pizza, which was delicious (not sure if they still offer that). Now they have an actual food menu of sandwiches and things, but we haven't tried any of them so my review is basically just of the overall space, service, and drinks. The bartenders here are incredibly nice & welcoming. There's one that's there almost every time we visit, I think his name might be Noah and he's great! If you don't see something on their cocktail list that jumps out to you, you can tell them some things you like & they'll make something just for you. My recent favorite cocktails are the Lavender Eclipse, Rule of Plum, & Espresso Martini. My husband also enjoys the Helltown Beers.

The only negative about this place is that the inside doesn't match the outside! I really had no idea if I was in the right place until I walked in and looked around for a moment. I'm not really sure what's up with the owner/marketing/set-up, but it's tricky. Once inside, I found a spot at the bar and had a couple of beers. The Hazy IPA was perfect for a post-marathon brew! I was planning to eat later at a nearby sandwich place, so I only ordered light food. I had some miso-mustard pickles that hit the spot. The conversation at the bar was very friendly and I can imagine that I would become a regular if I lived nearby!

We walked the strip on a sunny Sunday for a few cocktails during our little trip in Pittsburgh and this place did not disappoint. I ordered the pumpkin spice latte White Russian and WOW. The most fall cocktail I could ever hoped and dreamed for. Super cool and spacious atmosphere and the bartenders were very nice. There was a shelf of board games so we played Jenga outside on their large patio. Great place!

I got the pumpkin beer, which is probably seasonal but HANDS DOWN best pumpkin beer I've ever had. I can't remember if it was an IPA but it was slightly hoppy, nothing too bad (I can't handle a lot of hops). Nice vibe inside. Bartenders were really nice an patient, let me try some different beers. A good choice if you're in Strip area.

Are you looking for live jazz, good, food, yummy, thirst quenching libations, and super nice staff? Me, too!!!! I found it here at Helltown Brewing in The Strip District. This Illy Philly and her good friend were out on a rainy night in the burgh, looking for somewhere to get out of the rain. We ventured down to the Strip and there they were... lights blazing and music playing! We walked into a fabulous Jazz set and a beautiful atmosphere. The staff were super, super nice. Our bartender was phenomenal!!! I'm not a real drinker, and I really don't like to taste the alcohol and this is what I told my bartender. He winked at me and said," I'll make you something", and he did, and it was deliciosooo!!!! He made this Guava concoction that I ordered twice! The restaurant was closed, but they graciously made us two platters, one with veggies and hummus and one with salsa and chips. The Jazz band was really out of this world and their sets were loveliness to my ears. We enjoyed our evening and we shut the place down, lol!!! BTW, they also sell liquors and they have another store up the street where you can buy locally made liquors. Check it out....

Wasn't sure how to check into this spot, as this is a conglomeration of both Helltown as well as 1700 Penn. Still consider this as a brewing company first, with a healthy list of draft items in a spacious setting. Decent food list here, but was only around for drinks. Tried both the "Buffy IPA" ($7) and the "Interdimensional Pterodactyl" Triple IPA ($?). The Buffy has a hazy feel with some citrus, while the Pterodactyl is more strength ad hop-forward. Was able to lounge and watch the games on TV even after last call at around 11pm. During good weather there is a large outdoor seating area where there seems to be events from time to time. Can see this place being very busy, so it is nicer to go late at night to avoid the crowds.

No food here other than potato chips. When I ask for a water in addition to my drink I was told to go get from a jug by the bathrooms. Bartender took it upon herself to add a 20% tip on my bill. Won't be back any time soon!

Amazing, friendly, and delicious! While traveling I stopped in after 8 for a flight knowing they closed at 9. Not only did the bartender make perfect recommendations, but I got a taste of chef Aaron's current ice cream flavor - popcorn!! It was to die for. My husband is legit mad we don't have more time to come back. Definitely worth a stop-in for the atmosphere, friendly staff, and thoughtfully crafted menu.

I guess I'm coming to leave a tip for those who aren't beer drinkers that this isn't just a taproom but that they also have local wine and a full bar. Isn't it more the merrier right? At least that's how I feel when it comes to drink options. They had football on the TVs so we could enjoy college gameday. The bartenders are awesome and really made our experience. Giving advice on the wine and helping us with twists on our order like old bay infused vodka in my Bloody Mary. On our list for when we come back to visit.

I have been here two times. Both times they have many beer options. I try the light ones. I usually like sours from breweries, but they never seem to have one here. All the beers we have tried have specific tastes. If you like craft beer I'm sure this is the place for you. It is not the place for me though.

Helltown Brewing's taphouse in the strip is a great option all year round but especially when the weather is nice. Their outdoor area is beautiful- tons of seating, you can grab drinks inside or outside and they have live music on the weekends! They also have tons of food options including homemade pizza- which always looks amazing but I haven't tried any yet. Such a great option for a beer and music on a nice day!

Tourist trap!!!!! Food is overpriced, salty and lacking flavor. Let me describe... the pulled pork sandwich was $16, consists of pork on a bun- no other toppings I.e. onion pickle tomato nothing. Only offered 2 bbq sauces- one being blueberry. All mains come with a bag of popcorn- so essentially $16 for a plain bbq sandwich. The $9 Gouda Mac and cheese came in a small paper cup and tasted like Kraft out of a box. The miso pickles', was a cup of maybe 10 pickle rounds with a squirt of spicy mustard on top, $5... Finally the watermelon salad came out in a small paper box, very salty and disgusting, with added chicken it cost $19. The service is lacking. A man in an ugly striped/plaid vest standing behind the empty bar says 'hiiii how are you tonight????!!!!'. When I try to order my drink he says let me get so and so to get that for you, as he walks away chatting with the bartender. Not sure if he was a lazy manager or just useless. Why are you behind the bar, say hello, but can't serve a draft beer? The restaurant had maybe 6 people inside, more workers than customers. Overall the bill was over $60, for a sandwich, Mac and cheese, salad, coke and a beer. This place is overpriced, and service is lacking. Was empty on a Friday evening, for good reason. I do not recommend and I regret eating there.

Absolutely awful customer service. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere where they actually are happy to have your business.

We stopped by here officially for the second time on a Saturday night in June. A few years back peak pandemic we stopped by here as there was just outside seating. A lot has changed in two years. We are familiar with Helltown Beer because we used to live close to their brewery in Export. Now that we live closer to the city it's good to have Helltown beer still close to us. I think the taproom and patio outside are great spaces. There is a lot of space even if it's busy and you have good options if you want to be inside or if the weather is nice outside. I remember what this place was before and I can't believe how it has transformed. Other than beer they have wine and cocktails that looked good too but we were just here for our Helltown Beer. Service was good from the bartenders. They have bands that can play inside and outside so again it's a good place all year round. They didn't have my favorite Helltown beer on tap today but I still found one that I liked. This is a place they we will be back more often especially in the summer.

Have you ever wondered what it's be like to die but not move on, tied to the earthly realm with unfinished business, fully aware but unable to be seen or heard by those around you? If so, you've got a solid idea of what the service is like at Helltown brewing - The space is amazing and if you can get someone to acknowledge your existence long enough to place an order the beer is pretty good too.

This place ROCKS!! The girls running the bars are killing the game, they are slammed but they still make us feel important. The drinks are amazing, the venue is bumping. You can't be more than one person, but they truly are. They are busting their butts.

Loved this place. Like the local flavor and variety. Great atmosphere. Really cool decor. My wife and I tried different drinks to taste the variety. Great job. Right in the heart of the strip district.

The beer was great and there was a great selection. We were there on Sunday and they had a nice musician outside. I didn't try the food but looked like a limited menu of sausages.

Came back for saturday jazz after several months and noticed a lot of changes. The place was 1/4 full on a Saturday night. You used to have to reserve a table to get seated, it was so busy. There are three items on the menu, all of them sausages and poorly prepared with a bag of chips as the "side". The service was never very attentive but now it is nonexistant. I waited 20 min at a half filled bar before being able to order and I had to flag them down at that. So that explains why the place is so empty. Unfortunately its likely to be another pittsburgh venue that fails. It's to bad, because the music is great (the reason for 3 stars instead of one).

Came back after a couple on months and noticed some changes, none of them good. The service, which was always spotty, is now nonexistant. On a Saturday night with free live music they were 1/4 full (kind of a clue, eh) and after 20 min I was finally able to flag down one of the 4 servers at the bar. The food menu now totally consists of three different types of tube meat presented in a way which would be substandard at a High School football game, the only side being a package of Lay's chips. The live music, which was excellent, is the only thing that elevated it from one to three stars

Visiting Pittsburgh for the week from the west coast. Came in on a Monday and it was sparsely busy. Waited over 10 minutes for someone to take our order. Watched an 8 top that came in 5 minutes after us get served right away. The space is cool which is what saved it from a one star but this place does give off a very hipster vibe. And being ignored definitely made me feel like I wasn't "cool" enough to be there.

beer was just ok alot of better brewery options in pittsburgh. no food either how are you gonna be a brewery with no food what a joke lol
