Market Square!
This is the oldest part of Helsinki. It's a big public flea market right by the waterfront. There are a number of booths selling trinkets, souvenirs, coffee and food.
The food vendors tend to hang out in large orange tents, where they cook up your food inside, with ample seating next to heaters in order to get you out of the cold weather. I had coffee at one tent that had been visited by the likes of George Bush, Dan Quayle, Billy Graham, and LBJ! The cheapest foods in the market came from food booths that look more like food trucks or carnival foods. But, the Old Market Hall is just a stone's throw away, and you should really eat there- much better food.
Each souvenir booth seemed to sell slightly different goods, so you'll want to check them out. Need to get a reindeer pelt? This is the place. There's also a few booths selling fresh berries and jarred preserves. They offer free samples- I tried the "cloudberry" jam and was hooked!
There are free restrooms just south of here, next to the Old Market Hall. They're green and free. It's nice that there's a giant net covering the whole market to keep the birds away!
It's a beautiful market, with ships parked quayside, and a big obelisk. At one end of the market is the Esplanade, and the other way are some famous churches. It's a picturesque place that should be at the top of any Helsinki must-see list.
