Great restaurant with really good food. The portions are reasonable and the quality is top notch. On top of that the atmosphere is great and the service is extraordinary. The waiters and waitresses are super friendly and have an overview. They really pay attention to the details and are quick without begin disturbing all the time. Highly recommend!

Google
Took my friend here for his last night in Amsterdam, and couldn’t have picked a better spot for a Monday evening. The restaurant was packed all night and had a great atmosphere. Great wine recommendations as well! Will be back ❤️ Great for a family dinner as well.

Google
Came here by recommendation of our hotel. The ambiance is lovely, couldn't ask for more. The pace of the meal was slower than I was used to, but it really lets you relax and just enjoy the night.

Google
we spotted you from across the canal, saw a happy group and investigated curiously. Thankfully there were a few tables available and we picked one near the happy throng. We were immediately charmed by the welcome and the interesting seasonal menu option. The food was very special, service too and the acoustic was good considering how busy and excited the restauarant was. Two hours later we knew we had had THE restaurant experience of Amsterdam.

Google
The only thing better than the food and the location is the staff. Absolutely impeccable. My waiter was amazing and the food was unforgettable. I couldn’t have asked for anything more to make the experience better. I have fallen in love with this place!!! This place is 5 out of 5 stars!

Google
A local restaurant located on a deserted street, they have seasonal menus and chef's menus, the dishes are cooked very well, the wine is quite good at a cheap price. Very friendly service. The seating is a bit cramped, but it's cozy and the atmosphere is fun. I recommend that you come and dine at this restaurant.

Google
Love the place. Very gay friendly, very nice staff, like the interior and the food is great! Do make a reservation. 3,4 or 5 course meal. The herring is delicious, the fish and guinea fowl just perfect and dessert are amazing. Highly recommended

Google
Just awesome! From the food to the wine pairing and service, everything was near perfect. In relation to the food, the salmon entree, the fennel soup and the chocolate mousse dessert were all unbelievably good. The wine also matched every meal perfectly, with the German blanc de noir a stand out. Finally the service is excellent. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly to boot. This place is an easy five star rating.

Yelp
Made a dinner reservation on a weekday and was seated at the patio and was a bit quiet at first. I think most people here eat much later. The waiter tries to work as quickly as possible but there is really only one person that covers the dining room. The restaurant offers a price fixe menu depending on how many courses you want and you can order between the seasonal menu and their special anniversary menu (which highlights all of their popular dishes from the past 40 years)! It was also a very hot day so they offered free olives, which really got my appetite going! I got the pate to start (5/5), broccoli soup (3/5 just because I'm not a fan of the earthy vegetables taste) and the stuffed salmon (5/5). I would definitely come back to try more of the food here!

Yelp
Unpretentious local restaurant located on a relatively street. We ordered 3 courses from the seasonal menu and thought the appetizers stood out the most especially the Herring Tartar. For the entrees, the Haddock Filet and the Grilled Lamb were both solid and for the desserts, the Helmelse Modder (signature chocolate dessert) was very good and the Tartelette was not bad.

Yelp
Overall a nice evening, but the only thing that was a bit of a struggle was keeping the meal moving as it did seem of our courses were forgotten along the way and we had to keep flagging our server down and ask about where some of our food was as it was taking just incredibly long to keep the meal going. We allotted 2+ hours for our meet to get to a tour on time, and we thought that was going to be enough, but we really started to cut things close and all the courses were pretty back loaded on the clock and in the end it all felt rushed. There was a good 45 mins before any course hit our table from ordering, which I think was an error but it just derailed us a bit. The food was very good but wish we had more time to enjoy it and not feel that we were on a time crunch. It was still a nice night and felt like this spot just had an off moment, and the food was delicious and worth a try!

Yelp
The food choice was excellent and everything lived up to the description. Our server knew the menu AND the wine selection very well.

Yelp
Ordered: Bottle of Rosé (~€35): Vin de Pays du Var, Pinchinat, Provence, FR 2020 4-course dinner (~€58) -Starter: three croquettes of red paprika, saffron and Puy lentils, with chervil mayonnaise and mixed herb salad -Main course: pan fried North Sea haddock fillet with mussels and mussel-saffron sauce, la ratte potatoes and celery fennel salad -Cheeses: three Dutch cheeses with fig bread -Dessert - 1) Hemelse Modder: dark and white chocolate mousse with vanilla cream and 2) Tartelette filled with vanilla cream, marinated strawberries and verveine syrup, with meringue and strawberry sorbet Aya's take: A true Dutch meal! Hemelse Modder offers different options ranging from a 3-course to 5-course menu. Service was a bit slow (according to my American standard) but you can tell they really focus on the experience and make everything as it is ordered. The Croquettes had exceptional flavors and the saffron and lentils was a really unique factor. The Haddock Filet was cooked well along with the mussels and mussel-saffron sauce. Again, the inclusion of saffron was genius and somehow worked so well here. I didn't care for the cheese dish honestly; a lot of them were too pungent for my taste. The desserts however were exceptional! We each got a different dessert so we can share and let me say both were amazing. The Hemelse Modder (literally their name) is a must. The mousse melts in your mouth and the balance between dark and white chocolates was divine. The Tartelette was also delicious with one of the best strawberry sorbets I've ever had. If you're looking for an elevated Dutch meal, this could be it!

Yelp
First off, the food here is excellent. You should know that there isn't really any a la carte ordering, but you can mix and match the menu as either 3, 4, or 5 courses. My friend and I had the three course menu and enjoyed it immensely. My appetizer was perfect and I absolutely loved it. My main dish had fish that could've been cooked slightly better and vegetables that could've been seasoned slightly better, but it was still excellent. Finally, the mousse for dessert was fantastic. All fresh, seasonal ingredients and attentive service. I find it a bit ridiculous that they are charging for tap water when you're paying around 40-50€ per person. Additionally, while striving to deliver a fine dining experience, they missed the mark on a couple points. Their silverware settings are incorrect, and they did not bring out new silverware after taking our silverware away for one of the courses. They also brought our dessert twice which was a bit of a disruption. These are nit picky things, but my reviews have to be more nit picky when trying to distinguish between fine dining experiences. At this price, almost nothing should be amiss, in my opinion.

Yelp
This was our first visit to Amsterdam and we wanted to try authentic Dutch food. Our Hotel recommended Hemelse Modder. Food was fresh and the experience was great; Service was excellent. Everything on the menu looked good. Ambiance was also excellent. Highly recommended.

Yelp
This place was so wonderful-great friendly staff. Each course was delicious and loved the wine pairings.

Cindy C.

Yelp
Giving this place 2 stars because we were discriminated against and denied a table by one of their male employees. There were a lot of open tables and the restaurant was not booked out since we could make a reservation online for that day and time - my bf had to ask another employee for a table.

Emmet H.

Yelp
The meals for the six of us were fantastic. The service was a little slow only due to the short staff and full dinning room. The two ladies serving were very friendly and worked hard to make it a great dining experience.

Neluta G.

Yelp
Modern European food, very nice and romantic restaurant. The name of the restaurant means "Heavenly Mud" in Dutch. This place is a farm to table restaurant, you can opt for a set menu or pick items from the regular menu. Every local customer left with a jar of "heavenly mud" it look like some kind of soil fertilizer. The lady in charge was nice enough to offer a table while the restaurant was fully booked for the evening. The place is located within walking distance from the main train station in Amsterdam and it is not "out of the way" or difficult to find", use the Yelp walk options and it will ate you there. Every dish was delicious and I would definitely go back.

Yelp
Hands down the best Dutch (with a French twist) restaurant in area...the food was exquisite, and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Will recommend to friends when visiting Amsterdam

Yelp
I loved this place. What a hidden gem. It wasn't busy when I got there (8 pm) and it was a Saturday...which I thought was rather odd. Regardless, it was very good. The menu was rather difficult to read...not because it wasn't in English...but because I haven't heard of a lot of the unique food they had. The certain type of fowl was wonderful, and the lamb rillettes were also good. Of course the desert was amazing (as it should be). The waiter was very friendly and very attentive. It's also in a quiet area of the city...not super touristy.

Yelp
This is off the recommendation of our hotel concierge. Went to Hemelse Modder for dinner. The reviews on yelp sounds fabulous with it describing as modern European. Nice to see they are known for their farm to table concept. Stepping in, we could tell it had a very clean, yet inviting warm vibe. We ordered and chosen off their 3 course menu and was able to mix and match between their regular and special menu. I had to cod fillet with vegetables and potatoes. I didn't want the parsley crust and was so glad to chef could accommodate. My wife got the rack of lamb which was cooked to perfection. For appetizer, I got the Dutch shrimp with salad while she got the breast duck. Both were just in awe and went down smoothly. The presentation is top notch. For dessert, I got their house special dark chocolate mousse and she got raspberry tart with vanilla ice cream. Both hit the spot. My 11 years old son ordered a la carte and got French fries for 4 euro and fried haddock. Both did not disappoint. Highly recommended and the wait staffs are extremely hard working and appreciative. Lastly, free wifi.

Yelp
Unique and cherished dining experience at Hemelse Modder. We enjoyed both vegetarian and meat options from the regular menu and a special anniversary menu. The staff was wonderfully helpful and guided us through the menu and wine pairing. Highly recommend for a unique experience

Yelp
Lovely meal. Kind staff. Good value too. Presentation of the food a bit fussy.... but maybe this is the Dutch (I'm US)

Yelp
Myself and my friends had a great meal here on our first night in Amsterdam. The restaurant is recommended in the Lonely Planet guide but this doesn't always mean its going to be great. However, I had a look at the menu on the internet and was impressed with what I saw. The name of the restaurant literally translates as Heavenly Mud - a reflection on the emphasis placed on organic, seasonal produce. It was pouring with rain when we arrived so this restaurant was a real haven from the elements. The decour is modern and light and we received a warm welcome from the waiters which was a pleasant surprise as the Dutch front-of house staff have a reputation for being quite stando-offish which we would definitely experience later in our trip. The restaurant offers three menus: the al la carte menu, a three course set menu and a seasonal set menu. My four friends all chose the standard set menu and I went for the seasonal July menu as I loved the idea that the dishes were designed around produce in season and available from the local farmers. We were given olives and beautiful fresh bread when we sat down. My starter was fillet of red mullet with sorrel sauce - beautifully cooked so that it retained its moisture and full of flavour. Main course was a whole trout served with cockles, beetroot and potato celery cream. The trout was very tasty but extremely filling, I couldn't quite clear my plate. My pudding was incredible - blackcurrant tart with lavender ice cream. The tart was bursting with flavour and the ice cream subtle enough to compliment it beautifully. Also a hit was the signature pudding, the Hemelse Modder, which was a milk and white chocolate mouse. My two friends who sampled this saying it was one of the best puddings that they had ever eaten. All this was washed down with a couple of bottles of Chenin Blanc which was delightful. Hemelse Modder was originally established in 1984, the fact that they have been in operation for over 25 years speaks volume for the quality of the food and service. Its a little pricy but everything is in Amsterdam. At least here you feel like your are getting value for money.

Yelp
This restaurant was an awesome little find. The service was very attentive and she helped us navigate the Dutch wine list to find a good wine. The menu has three and four course meals. The appetizers were very good. During a warm Amsterdam summer night the chilled summer soup (gazpacho really) was great on a warm night. We both ordered the duck, which was amazing. We walked out from a three nice course feeling satisfied but not overly full. The terrace looked inviting had it not been raining. Very cozy and quaint. Highly recommended. This is a good spot away from the busy streets and crowds for a nice meal.

Yelp
Great place! Three courses of excellent food for about 33 euro. The service was great - very attentive waiters, who provided great wine recommendations. The interior was very simple and slightly rustic in a cool way. "Only" 4 stars because a slightly chewy sirloin steak, they didn't ask us how we wanted our steaks cooked and because of an extremely bitter side dish of the steak. We would like to return in order to taste their signature dish - heavenly mud!

Yelp
Good food and great wine menu. I like the atmosphere and the service but can also understand that this is not for everyone. Waiters actually know what they are serving and they are never shy to serve English speaking guests.

Yelp
Yummy food, good wine and a cosy restaurant! Affordable prices. Celebrated my birthday there. Really loved it. Staff very friendly

Yelp
This (25year old) restaurant Heavenly Mud is a real taste experience. The food is awesome, the service is superb. If you are looking for something good, which aint big and much crowed. You should go there, it's worth every penny. Three-course 29,50 euro. English site availible see link.

Yelp
This is 1 of my favourites in the centre of Amsterdam. @ HM you only get the best ingrediënts, prepared equally good. The chef is cooking along the seasons and waiters are very helpful and nice. 5 stars because this restaurant proves that you don't have to pay much for this kind of service and dinner. 32,50 EUR for a 3 course dinner is a price you definitely want to make the trip for!

Nathalie H.

Yelp
What an authentic place this is! The waiter was smoking a cigarette outside when we passed by and asked about the place. His friendliness and the nice name of the place made us decide to go inside. And it was worth it. The atmosphere is relaxed, but I would have chosen different lighting, although it is not disturbing. I would really recommend to go for the wine suggestions. The waiter presented the wines as if he was just there yesterday to select them. Nice details about the regions the wine came from. But not as most sommeliers do, but just as this relaxed guy who enjoyed great wines. He makes you really feel a guest. Anyway, food was great, but with four courses, I didn't make it till desert. I have to come back for just one course and desert, because I really have to try the 'hemelse modder', their chocolate desert.

Tina P.

Yelp
Definitely save this place for a nice night out. This place is great! Dutch food has been a little heavy so it was wonderful to find a place that served Dutch food that wasn't fried. It's in a quiet part of Nieuwmarkt about a 15 minute walk from central train station. The restaurant is comfy and quiet. You can order a three course menu Orval's carte. Portions are well sized, food well seasoned, dinner nice and slow. My table tried the white asparagus soup, the sea bass special, the North Sea fish filet, and the puff pastry with barley and veggies. All were great, especially the soup and pastry. All the desserts looked great and it was hard choosing between the mousse and the currant cheesecake. Ultimately we chose the mousse which was surprisingly lighter than expected. Of course it's mousse, so we're not talking terribly light. But I expected a super rich dish and I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't. Definitely get the mousse, which is what the restaurant was named for.

Yelp
Yum!! Great location on the canal. Veal was tender and juicy. Also had the Dutch cheese plate and the signature dessert (vanilla and chocolate mousse) was fantastic!

Sabin R.

Yelp
Reserved a table for 10 persons with only 7 people showing up. When the check came, the restaurant charged us with 3 extra 3 course meals (120 euro!) . They did not tell us ahead of time they will charge extra, also they did not cook those courses! On top of this the restaurant was half empty anyway. We felt basically scammed..

Nicole W.

Yelp
The food was good but nothing that amazed. It took 2.5 hours for 3 courses. The desert was the best part of the meal.

Thomas S.

Yelp
The best meal in Amsterdam by far! Ordered the four course dinner with the wine pairing and they did a fabulous job in matching each course. Everyone loves their meal. Definitely will return!

Jim W.

Yelp
After the Anne Frank House Tour, we ventured to Pesce for dinner. Only to find out there is a two hour wait - we did not have reservations So, we started waling to Hemelse Modder recommended by our host at Maurio Mansion. Another good recommendation. We got seated as soon as we arrived (around 8:15 PM). We ordered the mackerel and bisque seafood soup as starters. Then, we both ordered the fish of the day - cod with asparagus, mashed potatoes, and a mustard sauce. For dessert, we ordered light and dark mousse and the blackberry meringue pie. All the food were delicious. Good portion size. Seasoned perfectly. The service was very good. Very attentive. A must try in Amsterdam. By the way, it;s off the main streets in case you want to get away from all the tourists.

Millie R.

Yelp
We have never been in Amsterdam before nor ever eaten Dutch food before and OMG! This place is the best. Not only is the staff amazing but the food is even more amazing. Complements to the chef for sure.

Qype User (the_ho…)

Yelp
Highly recommend but book if you want to eat here, chose the fixed menu 33 menu, wow you won't be disappointed.

Brian J.

Yelp
There is outdoor seating in the back but that usually is full. Call ahead for a reservation, it is worth it. The decor is very simply but the food is not at all simple. There are three and four course menus to select from and all of it was very nice. The name of this restaurant is Heavenly Mud and this refers to the dessert of the of the same name. It was very good mud. I liked the lamb that I ordered and my friends puff pastry was very nice. The waitress was very willing to seat us and let us stay a long time. We were there on the Pride day and their special pink menu was full of special pink food for the day. I'm not into pink food but it was a nice idea.

Matt M.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere. Good food. Great staff
