My husband and I took a walk around our neighborhood today and decided to stop into Hemline. Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing. When we entered, we were not greeted, but shortly after, another family walked in and received a warm welcome. I brushed it off at first, but as we browsed, the pattern continued. The sales associate engaged with the other family, offering them a fitting room, while completely ignoring us- even as we stood in the same area.
It became clear that this was not an oversight but an intentional choice. Feeling unwelcome, we left. As people of color, we couldn’t help but notice that the family who received attentive service did not look like us.
I’ve shopped here in the past, but after this experience, I won’t be returning. No customer should ever feel unseen or unwelcome in a retail space.
