The Best New Wellness Retreats Around the World for 2024

"Situated in a quiet corner on the Catskills on the former campus of a New Age health spa, Hemlock Neversink is part adult camp, part health getaway. The 34-room retreat takes a playful approach to wellbeing, with quirky offerings like therapeutic hikes with the resident goats and terrarium workshops led by the hotel’s director of gardens. Set on 230 woodsy acres, guests are encouraged to work up a sweat on the property’s six miles of hiking trails and outdoor tennis courts. A dedicated movement building hosts classes like yoga nidra and offers one-on-one personal training, while the spa taps into local ingredients for treatments ranging from detoxifying body wraps to energizing massages. Food is a highlight here. Bittersweet restaurant’s plant-forward, multi-course dinner menu features flavorful dishes like roasted persimmon with cashew and Thai basil and ricotta dumplings with spinach and Nasturtium. Essential experience: The return to nature body treatment starts with a berry seed and white peat exfoliation, followed by a mask of organic mushrooms, helichrysum blossoms, and berry oils to promote cellular turnover and reduce inflammation. You’ll conclude with a bath laced with calming salts and birch extracts."

The Most Exciting Fall Hotel Openings of 2023, From Oregon to Mexico City

"Sleepy Neversink sits in a quiet corner of Sullivan County, tucked away from the busier, flashier parts of upstate. The rooms’ earth tones and Quaker-inflected design allow the property’s gorgeous surrounds to take center stage, with plenty of luxe touches to make your stay comfortable, like Bellino Fine Linens, Matouk bathrobes, and all-natural Oneka bath amenities."

The staff here made my stay so amazing! I couldn't have been happier. I came here to reset a bit and they made that possible. I can't speak highly enough of everyone who works here. They all cared about my needs and making my stay as wonderful as possible. They handled issues (not that there were any real issues) quickly, and effectively. They never hesitated to bring something to my room. This is really what I needed. The staff alone makes this place worth it. I wish I had a staff half this good when I worked in hospitality and I had a good staff. The property is beautiful the amenities are abundant, the goats are adorable, the rooms are cozy, the spa is first rate, ask for Carol as your masseuse. The food is creative fresh and yummy. I really can't speak highly enough of the staff, and I mean everyone, from the housekeeping, to maintenance, to front desk, to restaurant, everyone was amazing!

Had a magical weekend at Neversink with my mom! From the moment we arrived we were given exceptional service, from the checkin process to the restaurant at Bittersweet and our treatments at the spa. The food at Bittersweet is incredible, generous portions with local ingredients. The spa is beautiful and peaceful -- especially appreciate the relaxation room for quiet reading time. The goats were a true highlight of our trip, and we had a very special hike with the goats on Mother's Day! Highly recommended for a relaxing getaway close to NYC.

We recently ate at Bittersweet. Let’s just say, it was more bitter than sweet. We had read the reviews and were really looking forward to the farm-to-table experience (can’t believe I just wrote that). Sadly the food was average at best (our steak was downright bad), with confused flavour profiles and things poorly cooked. Despite being there on a Saturday evening in summer it was also dead. You can find much better for less elsewhere.

A wonderful stay. Exceptional food, service, activities and grounds. Our suite room was a little small but well equipped. Robert in the restaurant was an amazing waiter and even did an impromptu magic trick for us. The activities were such fun and helped when the weather was rainy. Love the fact it’s 16 plus so no young children around. The food was healthy, nourishing and exceptional in the restaurant. We ate there every night and plenty of choices for me as a vegetarian. Will happily return in the future.

Huge thank you to Rose & Miriam!! ||Rose was WONDERFUL and went out of her way for us on multiple occasions and was beyond accommodating - day and night!!||Miriam was so LOVELY and went above and beyond to make us feel so special and welcome during our stay!!||The accommodations maintained the perfect combo of rustic / woodsy / peaceful with enough upgrades to make you feel comfy. We chose a room that had no TV, so we brought a laptop to watch shows on, but rarely used it. It’s nestled in the Catskills so I’d recommend long socks and bug / tick repellant. ||The restaurant meals were delicious and the restaurant staff members were so kind. We brought our own snacks for any late night / post-dinner cravings, but they also had cute smores kits for guests in the evening.||Loved the paint class, mini terrarium building, bee keeping / honey lesson, pool movie night, and the GOATS!! The goats were truly the GOAT (greatest of all time) - they are all rescues / from a sanctuary and are so so sweet. Spending an hour a day in the barn just petting / chilling with the goats and learning about their personalities was a 10 out of 10 experience.

View more on this location on Instagram @Hudson_Valleygirl. This place was absolutely amazing! The service and people were so lovely and made you feel like you were in one of those snow globes! It was picture perfect between the property, the people, and the experiences. One huge ad that I haven’t seen other places do is offer several activities throughout the day Such as terrarium making, intuitive, painting, and mosaic creating. I usually I’m not want to go for crafts but the instructor Andrew was so wonderful and accommodating and you could even order drinks while you were having fun doing the crafts! They do really fun stuff like adult swim, which is a movie on a projector in the pool room and their relaxation room is the dreamiest place in the area! This place really is a little slice of heaven and I highly recommend you go and stay. Perfect couples, mom & daughter, or girls trip.

I can’t say enough good things about my experience at Hemlock. We arrived on a snowy April weekend—one of those surprise storms that makes you want to hibernate—and it ended up being the perfect spa getaway to unplug and recharge. Hemlock Spa is truly something special. From the moment we stepped inside, it felt like a full-body exhale. I had a massage from a therapist who’s been practicing for 39 years—literally longer than I’ve been alive—and you could feel that mastery in every movement. Her pressure was spot on (how is it so hard to find?!), striking that magical balance between deeply therapeutic and deeply relaxing. Hands down, one of the best massages I’ve ever had. Afterward, we spent hours cycling between the hot tub, pool, steam, and sauna, watching big fluffy snowflakes fall outside the windows—it felt like something out of a quiet winter dream. The space itself is beautifully designed: clean, cozy, and grounded in nature. Every detail, from the scents to the lighting to the tea, felt intentional. I left feeling completely restored—like I had pressed reset on both my body and brain. If you’re looking for a place to fully unwind, reconnect, and be taken care of, Hemlock is it. Already planning my return.

We had an amazing stay at Hemlock for our friend’s bachelorette! Everyone was incredibly attentive, accommodating, and kind, making us feel so welcome from the moment we arrived. We loved all the activities we participated in – every instructor we had was fantastic and made each experience so enjoyable. The indoor pool was also a huge plus, especially on a rainy day. The rooms were a little on the smaller side, but we spent most of our time outdoors, so it wasn’t an issue. Plus, the mattress was really comfortable and the shower pressure was great, which made all the difference after a long day of activities. Overall, it was a perfectly packed yet relaxing weekend. Special shoutout to the wonderful staff – Samantha, Marissa, Zach, Andrew, and Ryan – for making our stay so memorable. We’re already looking forward to coming back again!
