17 Jaw-Dropping Cliffhangers

"The Hanging Temple, located about 60 kilometers southeast of Datong, China, in the Shanxi province, is one of the world’s forgotten wonders. Clinging to a crag of Hengshan mountain, in apparent defiance of gravity, it consists of 40 rooms linked by a dizzying maze of passageways. The temple is said to have been built by a monk named Liao Ran during the late Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534) and restored in 1900. It was constructed by drilling holes into the cliffside into which the poles that hold up the temples are set. Interestingly, the temple is dedicated to not just one religion, but three, with Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism all practiced within the temple and represented in 78 statues and carvings throughout the temple." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Pretty good experience, the logistics getting from place to place is quite developed. You can hike up or take the cable cars. The mountain is peppered with temples that you can visit via various trails.

I highly recommend the walk up to the top of Hengshan. This way you could say you have walked up on of the five famous Chinese mountains. From the second parking lot the walk is 3 hours round trip. The path consists of nicely carved stone steps and takes you past numerous Daoist temples. The view along the way is very nice.

Planned to hike up and come down with the cable car. It turned out the cable car was closed 😭. You have 3 options to go up, hiking all the way, take a bus and then hike or take the cable car (if it‘s open).

Recommend a hike (more like walk) up Mount Heng. It's a very easy hike as there is stairs all the way (you see grandmas do it all the time). As I understood its one of the 5 religious mountains in china and as such there are many Daoist and Buddhist temples here. It's a great view and great experience that one must have to understand.

Hengshan Mountain is near to the hanging temple, its get crowded and jams on Chinese public holidays. It takes about 1 1/2 hour ride from datong city. Worth while to negotiate with the driver for the whole journey. May need to pay additional parking and entry ticket for the driver, acts as tourist guide and safeguard your return home as he stays with you. The climb is by stairs while, you need to climb hundreds if not thousands of stairs. Some area are steep, and small steps. The view is beautiful, it host many temple in the area. You need a whole day to complete both visit, try to spend at least 2 days in Datong if you plan this trip.

What a climb! 2017 meters high and well worth it. You just can't beat the view! Located in Hunyuan couple of hours south of Datong in Shanxi Province. I stayed in a nice hotel(the best one in town) in Hunyuan and explored the area for a few days. If you get a chance check it out.
