I'm a longtime local who used to frequent the predecessor at this location (Iron Spring Brewery). Henhouse has made some nice improvements. I eagerly went there with a friend the first week of opening to test it out--hungry and thirsty. The interior is nice and open, well lit, with tasteful yet festive decor appropriate for a modern brewpub (if a bit on the sterile side). In the middle there are long social tables to share with friends and strangers, and around the perimeter there are individual smaller tables. There is also outdoor seating, but it wasn't available yet. We sat at one of the long social tables. The beer I ordered was excellent (the "Denver Airport"), and the burger was decent. Overall, I will return to try Henhouse again, but I will note a two fairly significant "areas for improvement."
First, while the burger was tasty, it was small, and the amount of fries was meager. I am not a big eater, but this was definitely at the smaller end of burgers I've ordered at a restaurant. And at $17 (when cheese added), wasn't inexpensive.
Second, and more concerning, was the hospitality we received. The server was friendly, but not long after we sat down, a host (manager?) asked us to move down the table, so they could fit more people in. No problem, though the host's apology came across as rehearsed and insincere, and he seemed to be giving us more of a command than a request. Then, after we ate, staff grabbed our plates and glasses almost immediately, seeming rushed. We ordered another beer, and when we were done, the bill came almost immediately. We sat there finishing our waters for less than 5 more minutes after paying the bill, and the same host came and asked us to leave so more people could sit down. Again, it seemed very rushed to both of us, and his request came across as a command more than a request. It was not subtle whatsoever, my friend and I looked at each other quizzically. And we were not lingering at all--we were there for less than an hour for a meal and two beers each.
I very much get that this is a new place, that many people will want to try it, and that they have a vested interest in moving as many customers through as possible. But this was pretty extreme. I am usually easy going about service at restaurants, especially new restaurants, but this rushed and relatively brash treatment rubbed me the wrong way, as it did my friend.
I will probably give it another shot, as their beer is great, and I want this place to succeed. But this is definitely not the vibe to create if you want to be a long term success in a small community where word travels very quickly.
