Whiteface Lodge Is a Winter Wonderland in the Heart of the Adirondacks | Vogue

"Drive down Main Street and you can’t miss the spiritual heart of the whole operation: Herb Brooks Arena. In 1980, it was the site of one of the most legendary moments in American sports history, the so-called Miracle On Ice, when a ragtag group of American amateurs and college students defeated the feared and fearsome Soviet professional team en route to securing the Cinderella-story gold medal." - Corey Seymour

Lake Placid has done a great job maintaining this historic arena, which retains its 1980s charm despite recent renovations to modernize the facility for continued hockey games and events. Stop by, soak in the scene and history and wander through the museum, cafe and art exhibit. There’s a nice balcony with Adirondack chairs overlooking the speed skating oval and mountains. If you’re a hockey fan, Lake Placid is the spot

Almost austere to see the rink where the 1980 miracle on ice game took place, love that it’s still a functioning rink. The tributes along the top of the building are awesome.

Google
Historic Herb Brooks arena where the Miracle on Ice happened during the 1980 Winter Olympics. Recently renovated the place looks great while maintaining its history. Easy to navigate. Concessions and restrooms easy to get to. The sound system and video screen are great. Be aware during intermissions, you may end up on the big screen so pay attention! 🤣

What an awesome piece of history. It did not disappoint in the slightest. Very well decorated with 1980 memorabilia and pictures. A must see for any Miracle on Ice fan! If you find this review helpful, please consider liking it so others may find it as well.

Best ice I’ve skated in my life and the rink is so perfectly balanced between the original and the updates. The whole arena is beautiful and maintained so well!

Google
newly updated arena where the miracle on ice 1980 men's Olympic hockey team beat the USSR and countless other miracle's have happened on this rink. there is a new museum where where you can watch a video called "small towns, big dreams" all about how lake placid NY made its mark way before the Olympics leading up to the 1932 and 1980 Olympics...yes that's right lake placid NY has hosted two Olympics. the only place in the world to host it more than once. winter that is anyway. the video will most likely talks about former NY governor and former United States president Franklin delanor Roosevelt having some responsibility into promoting the "forever wild act" which made it illegal to development in the Adirondacks because its a NY state park with 6 billion acres of wild life. FDR also had some involvement in the 1932 winter Olympics games. with the veterans memorial highway up whiteface mountains ski slope. the highway is only accessed during the summer season. don't forget to check out whiteface mountain ski slope, the ski jumps, the bobsled track, and the original Olympic coldren from 1980 out on the horse show grounds in lake placid NY.

Seeing the rink where the USA won the Miracle on Ice in 1980 was amazing! If you haven’t already, please go here and see history and if you’re lucky maybe there will be a game playing!

Yelp
After touring the Olympic Museum, I took some time to walk through the original 1932 "Jack Shea Arena" and the more modern 1980 "Herb Brooks Arena" that are part of the Olympic sites. The 1932 arena was home to the first indoor skating events in Olympic history and of course the 1980 arena is where the USA Men's Hockey Team won gold over the heavily favored Soviet Team. Pretty darned awesome to see these sites where history happened. And the self-guided tour is free. The Olympic Museum is not. [Round number review 1600 of 2024 - 514 in New York - 22623 overall]

Yelp
It is worth stopping at this place. Great bit of history surrounded the center - you would feel good being inside this historic place. Stepping inside the center was such exciting experience- we were able to see memorabilia's inside the museum, was able to witness intermediate hockey league inside the historic skating arena, was able to see the Olympic skaters dressing rooms and was able to roam around looking on important plaques, photos and banners of Olympic historian athletes. The place is small but gives big opportunity for guests to embrace the world known Olympic history that had happened there.

Yelp
The ice is very well maintained. I did a weekday morning freestyle session ($20/hour- paid online). I was the only person on the rink, which was surprising but quite nice for me. People frequently walked through from the museum and stopping to watch me skate. Personally this was not ideal but it can depend if you don't mind this. It seems that the rink be used more for events (such as week-long skating camps) and tourists as opposed to a home base for more serious skaters.

Yelp
Most of my friends and followers should know by now that my kiddo is a figure skater. A really good one. An Olympic synchro hopeful. But I digress. Since my daughter skates, I've met many Olympians in my day. One of her coaches skated in the Olympics. She has skated in Stars on Ice. So I was a bit surprised at my reaction upon walking into Herb Brooks Arena. The Lake Placid Olympic Center. I could feel the electricity in the air. A lot of the rink is dedicated to the Miracle on Ice - the US Olympic hockey team beat the Russians. Herb Brooks was the coach. But 1980 was also the year of Scott Hamilton. Linda Frattiane. Tai Babalonia and Randy Gardner. I didn't take a tour. The Olympic museum was closed. I just wandered around down through the locker room halls. And I was able to sit in the arena - one of the only people. And watch a skating team practice. I've wandered through so many rinks and watched so many practices in my day. But this is the first time An arena gave me goosebumps.

Yelp
COVID for sure impacted the Olympic Center. So this review is two parts. FIRST PART -- The facility and the Center itself. I give it 2 1/2 stars and I am sure COVID took at least a star away. There was not much to do, really. You can view the rink, where the Miracle On Ice took place, from a little standing area on the upper deck. The souvenir shop is tiny and only one family at a time is allowed in. The selection is pretty limited, but I bought a few things because we were there. The 1932 Rink was closed to the public. So, overall, after having the LPOC on our must-see list, we got there and it was like... there was nothing there. I mean, in 10 minutes, you are done and haven't seen much. SECOND PART -- Skating on the LPOC ice. Even though the website said public skating was unavailable (presumably due to COVID), the woman at the info desk told us that public skating was available at select hours that day. Thank God we stopped in the info office! You need tickets, so we got tickets for 3-4 PM. Thanks to COVID, the sessions are limited to 30 skaters. That is not a lot for a big rink; it's almost like we had run of the whole rink. Being a hockey fan, and being 56, I remember the Miracle On Ice. I remember watching it, and I remember that U-S-A feeling that has never been equaled. So to skate where Mike Eruzione took his shot from, to stand in Jim Craig's crease, to simply skate across those blue lines and at center ice...it was magnificent. The ice is like silk; I have never skated on any ice like that. The views were magnificent: looking up around the arena and the rafters, or looking across the entire rink from behind the goal crease. Absolutely fantastic. This part gets such a strong 5 Stars that it does not get diluted by the disappointment of everything else. Skate on this rink if you can!! It is fantastic. A moment of life I will never forget.

Yelp
Great bit of history for athletes and Olympic buffs (I am neither). The movie 'Miracle' was filmed here (I have never seen it), but for ice hockey fans this would be a cool factoid. Also, this is about the best and only pit stop for restroom breaks and baby changing stations, and it's surprisingly not tourist-y, we weren't accosted by anyone trying to sell us pointless stuff. It was a nice place to take a breather in air conditioning and to let my friend's little son relax a bit.

Yelp
Hi Folk's, Welcome to Lake Placid, NY. Everybody. Hope you got your thermal underwear because it gets mighty cold around here. It was in the fall of 1980. My family was planning a winter vacation, but what's to do? Hey the Olympics is in New York this year. Lake Placid is only a few hours upstate. Why don't we all go? This would be an historic decision for us all. I remembered that my grandmother had recently lost her husband so we brought her along, grandma was 80 years old but spry as a mountain goat climbing up the hills. I was in charge of arranging the trip. Back in the day there was no computer or Internet. No Travelocity Expedia TripAdvisor or Captain Obvious. Enter the good old-fashioned trusty travel agent. She was just wonderful. We took the tour bus upstate relaxed all the way. The trip was all inclusive. Meals, Hotel travel, and Olympic event tickets. Back in the day it cost about 2,500 for the 3 of us. We saw Eric Heiden win the gold medal skating the 5000-meter race. In the outdoor Arena just across the street from the indoor rink. The Opening Ceremonies were quite impressive I never been to an Olympic event before Vice president Walter Mondale presided over the ceremonies, watching all the countries marching in their unique uniforms and their Nations flags. A site and a Time I shall never forget. It was the year of the Miracle on Ice. Looking at the Yelp reviews and photos my heart stopped short, OMG this was the place where I witnessed history. Being from Long Island we were all caught up in the Stanley Cup Dynasty. I was so lucky to see The Stanley Cup won by the Islanders in front of my eyes and to even hold it in my hands. But this series of hockey games had a different feeling this was our entire country challenged. How would we Step Up? I will never forget watching the historic hockey games there were not just one played here. The American team had to fight to get into the position to play for the gold medal. I watched the games, I watched the victories, I watched the excitement build. I was there when the whole Town of Lake Placid and our entire country erupted into joyous jubilation. It was the impossible, it was a miracle. The United States had won the 1980 hockey Olympic gold medal !!! The Golden Medals were handed out to the Victorious Olympic athletes on a freezing cold frozen lake in the middle of the town of Lake Placid with thousands gathered around as our hearts all beat with the one Pride we felt that night. It was the only Olympics that I ever went to I was so happy to have my mom and my grandmother who is now in heaven, witness the sights, sounds, wonders and miracles of that time. God bless you Grandmother God bless the United States of America. JIM D.

Yelp
when we lived in new York, we visited this place a few times. I love figure skating. I went there for the figure skating. I would watch as they practiced. I met Karin courtland one of the skaters. she allowed me to buy her breakfast one morning. she also autographed a poster for me. I had my picture taken with her. I love figure skating. this is a amazing place.

Yelp
Really interesting museum. It was for me less about the sports and more of the history of the games and the area. Still it was a really cool small museum. Highlight definitely as seeing the rink where the Miracle on Ice happened
