Yelp
COVID for sure impacted the Olympic Center. So this review is two parts.
FIRST PART -- The facility and the Center itself. I give it 2 1/2 stars and I am sure COVID took at least a star away. There was not much to do, really. You can view the rink, where the Miracle On Ice took place, from a little standing area on the upper deck. The souvenir shop is tiny and only one family at a time is allowed in. The selection is pretty limited, but I bought a few things because we were there. The 1932 Rink was closed to the public. So, overall, after having the LPOC on our must-see list, we got there and it was like... there was nothing there. I mean, in 10 minutes, you are done and haven't seen much.
SECOND PART -- Skating on the LPOC ice. Even though the website said public skating was unavailable (presumably due to COVID), the woman at the info desk told us that public skating was available at select hours that day. Thank God we stopped in the info office! You need tickets, so we got tickets for 3-4 PM. Thanks to COVID, the sessions are limited to 30 skaters. That is not a lot for a big rink; it's almost like we had run of the whole rink.
Being a hockey fan, and being 56, I remember the Miracle On Ice. I remember watching it, and I remember that U-S-A feeling that has never been equaled. So to skate where Mike Eruzione took his shot from, to stand in Jim Craig's crease, to simply skate across those blue lines and at center ice...it was magnificent. The ice is like silk; I have never skated on any ice like that. The views were magnificent: looking up around the arena and the rafters, or looking across the entire rink from behind the goal crease. Absolutely fantastic.
This part gets such a strong 5 Stars that it does not get diluted by the disappointment of everything else. Skate on this rink if you can!! It is fantastic. A moment of life I will never forget.
