Herdade da Matinha

Fantastic gem of a hotel in the middle of some of the most lush forestry in Alentejo. Off the beaten track yet full of warm welcomes and delicious food, not to mention three pools including one reserved for adults only, it is everything a Hyatt or Marriott is not - intimate, authentic and slightly wild. If homogenized hospitality is what you are after, there are many hotel brands catering to those needs. Herdade da Matinha is not. It is full of soul, charisma and charm. It may not always be to perfection, but it will leave you with more memories than any of the plasticized chain hotels will. Our family will be back for sure, this was one of the highlights of our 2.5 week trip to Portugal and the one place that left our 7 year old in tears when we had to leave.

Don’t try to understand Herdade de Matinha, just go there and dive in the magic experience of this isolated edge of Alentejo, surrounded by nature, surfing the artistic wave of his soul. Amazing and very comfortable rooms. Very tasty food in the restaurant (great breakfast). People very kind. Nearest beaches about 15 minutes far from there. Great holidays. Hope to come back again.

Amazing place in the middle of a nature for a peaceful stay! A place where you want to come back. Room was spacious and the bed just so comfortable. People working there are very nice and attentive! A special thank to Nidia who made our stay special! The place has three such cute dogs with great personalities who will steal your heart - you have been warned! :) The place offers lots of activities. Overall a very warm recommendation!

Went to Portugal to focus on a creative project, looking for a calm atmosphere. I was not disappointed - Herdade da Matinha offered exactly the experience I was looking for. I went there during the low season in January. There were few to no other guests - they really made an effort to make sure I had everything I needed, beginning with detailed descriptions on how to get there to organizing a trip to watch the sunset. I had great weather, did a few hikes in the surrounding nature and enjoyed the silence. Overall, it was just stunning. In total, I spent 7 days. My room was spacious and nicely designed and there are many cozy common areas. There is also a restaurant serving great food. You should know that there are dogs running around freely in the property - they are very cute and make the place feel like a home. Can only recommend staying here!

We had a magical retreat here. Incredibly beautiful nature all around, super cute place, very comfortable rooms and delicious food. Things might be a bit slower than in other places, that is exactly what you want here. Unwind, relax and enjoy the nature side of Portugal.

4,5 out of 5 stars. Good food, awesome location, nice rooms - a hidden gem in the middle of nowhere and a perfect place for a calm week. Oh and the three dogs are awesome. Love Them. Sadly some inexperienced staff in the restaurant with some very little english knowledge. Made ordering quite a challenge sometimes.

Very beautiful room and setting undercut by a poor service. No hot water the night we arrived. Staff informed but no information or contact/apology the next day. No hot water in kitchenette sink the whole stay, informed staff but nothing was done. Asked for batteries for the remote, no reply Asked at reception in person they said they saw the message and will reply later but nothing. The next day after 24 hours they replaced them. Food was really quite bad. Breakfast very limited selection of stale croissants and a type of cake and only one type of fruit each day. Rarely any oranje juice. One day there was no ice all day. No fresh coffee, only self serve from a machine. Dinner was bad too, the ceaser salad was drowned in sauce that it was all soggy and charcuterie platter we couldn't finish as was bad too. Hardly any restaurant staff speak any English. The room door was very hard to open and clearly needs to be replaced Deposit Of 25 euro for a towel?? Bizzare. Online it says its 10 euro a night to use a baby crib but we had our own anyway but they said they will charge us anyway just for the baby being there? When you are paying over 300 euro a night for a room being charged an extra 10 euro for your baby is just quite tacky and also strange. The staff were friendly but it seems management is lacking in structure.
