We’ve just completed a mini tour of Portugal and visited a lot of great places along the way. Unfortunately, Herdade do Sobroso was not one of them. Part of the tour we were actually most looking forward to, we were excited to see the stunning location but that’s where our excitement pretty much ended. The rest of our experience at the Herdade was very underwhelming - despite being the priciest on our trip. Perhaps our expectations were too high but for the boutique hotel it’s marketed as and price we paid, we expected a nice experience with attentive colleagues. Instead, we found the staff were by most account absent - we spent quite a bit of time trying to track them down for drinks, to order our breakfast, to find out where we had to be for our massage (which meant we lost 10 mins we’d paid for) or initially to even get into our rooms. The food was the worst we ate on our whole trip. The very limited options were pretty tasteless and very expensive for what they were (a standard €35 per person even if you only wanted a salad/small bite for dinner). The wine was incredibly expensive, especially considering it’s produced on site. And the evening wine tour/tasting was over sold to us, with us not setting foot into the vineyards, and the cheese & charcuterie being 4 pieces of cheese and 2 slices of salami rather than the impressive spread seen on their website and socials. The boat trip we took wasn’t on site (which we hadn’t realised) and had an extortionate mark up on it. There was little else on the grounds to explore as a lot of land is fenced off due to wild boar etc. In addition, the pool got a little chilly in the evening as the sun set over the other side of the site. All in all, if you want to see the stunning vineyards of Alentejo, aren’t worried about good service and have money to burn, this is a solid option, otherwise, we wouldn’t recommend it.
