The Heritage House Resort (Mendocino Coast, California) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Most hotels located within sight of the California coast have a beautiful view — that’s just elementary geography. But few can boast the kind of turf the Heritage House Resort occupies. This hotel can believably call itself the jewel of the coast without causing you to roll your eyes — among other reasons, you’ll be careful not to take your eyes off of the view. Rare indeed is the hotel with oceanfront property in Mendocino, but Heritage House Resort occupies fully 37 acres of unspoiled cliffside on the coast." - Tablet Hotels

Direct Booking:|When I was looking for a getaway, Mendocino came to mind and I came across Heritage House Resort & Spa's website. They had a special promo code and I'm glad I booked directly because they had more recent photos that reflected their beautifully renovated rooms and property. Had I booked through a different site, I might've been turned away by the negative reviews and dated photos. ||Trip & Room:|I booked this as a mental health & wellness trip to escape the city. I was overwhelmed with life and family and this was the perfect trip that helped me relax and recover! Shout out to DUCK at the front desk for his exceptional customer service. He was so helpful, friendly and very knowledgeable about the property and area. I was in one of the Carousel ocean view rooms with a tub and I LOVED it so much, I ended up extending my trip to 1 week! Even then, it didn't feel long enough! BTW you can borrow binoculars from the front desk for bird watching! :) ||Location & Things to Do:|Property location was beautiful, situated next to the ocean. From here, it was a short drive to Mendocino and Fort Bragg. I visited the Botanical Garden, a grocery store inside of a former Church, ate fresh seafood, charming little shops and local farmers markets. I still think of this place fondly from time to time! I would definitely bring my family and dog Coco back here and look for Duck again! Next time I would bring my yoga mat to do some yoga on the balcony or grassy property. ||This is the perfect place for a pet-friendly family vacation, girls' getaway trip, mental health & wellness trip or to celebrate any special occasion!

Stayed for a long weekend and had a mixed experience. We stayed in a Sunset View room (Rm 17). Pros: Absolutely gorgeous views from the room and everywhere on the property! The bathroom was excellent with heated floors, claw foot tub, nice shower. Breakfast was good and included! Loved exploring the beach on the property with tide-pools. Cons: Our room shared a wall with another room and the soundproofing was non-existent. We could hear every word the other guests were saying, every word of their movie, etc. One of the noisiest hotel rooms I've ever stayed in, which is not what you expect at a property like this where you come to get away! I wouldn't stay here again, for this reason (unless I could get a room type without shared walls)? Two other minor room issues were- the roof leaked in our room on a rainy day, it was dripping onto the bed. And lastly, the room smelled slightly of natural gas, presumably from the gas fireplace? We called the front desk and they said "oh yeah that's normal when it rains" - ??? this was concerning.

I just ate dinner there with a couple of friends. The food there is exceptional. Work your way thru the appetizers, they're great! Then dice into the Entrees, the chicken parm is superb, and comes with delicious fettuccine. The views are epic and live music is available on select nights.

Wow, what an absolute gem of a spa. First of all, this location is absolutely beautiful. Tucked away in the beautiful California redwoods, the views for this spa are absolutely stunning. We stayed here for 4 days during our honey moon and the staff treated us so kindly and made us feel very special. The room was beautiful and gave us full visibility to the gorgeous cliffs and waves. One thing to consider is that while you do have some WiFi access here, there’s no cellphone service for miles. We loved being able to disconnect, but that is something to consider. We could definitely recommend the couples massage, but in particular take advantage of a facial here. It was incredible.

We booked one of the cabins. It was dumpy and dirty (like old hair and grime in the shower dirty). The place was badly in need of a refresh — not even close to how it’s advertised online. I brought it up upon checkout, and was told to contact management. I have been trying for months to speak to a manager about the stay, and yet neither hotel manager (Sarah or Anya or anyone else) will return my calls or emails. I always believed that Heritage House had a special reputation but i will never stay here again. Incredulous.

We had an excellent time at the resort. The property offers different rooms with beautiful views, each one breathtaking in its own way. Anya was very helpful and guided us in choosing the room that suited us best, which made our stay even more enjoyable. The included breakfast was a nice touch and added to the overall experience. Although the rooms were recently renovated, we noticed a few scuffs on the walls and some stains on the furniture. Refreshing these small details would help maintain the resort’s luxurious feel. Overall, we truly enjoyed our stay and would be happy to return.

There is no lovier location on the Mendocino Coast than the Heritage House, which is why we have regularly returned for 43 years. On this latest visit, we were delighted to find that our room had an unobstructed view of the Pacific, and the furniture had been very nicely updated. Strolling the gardens has always been a special joy and was no less beautiful this time. However, that’s where the good news stopped. The weather was quite cool when we arrived in our room and we called reception for advice about turning on the heat. We were told that the fireplace operated from the wall thermostat, but no luck. After the third call, a maintenance worker came the next morning. He told us the heating system wasn’t working, the fireplace was missing logs, and a small group of blue gas apertures were all the heat available. On the second night of our planned four night Christmas week visit, the winds howled, rains pounded the windows, and the power went out. As the land lines were down, we were grateful to find the cell service had improved considerably, and called reception. They confirmed the power outage but offered no further information. The outage continued for our remaining two nights until we departed for home on Christmas morning. Fortunately, our favorite McCallum House and Ledford House restaurants were open for dinner, as was the local’s favorite, Patterson’s Pub! Without power, there were no lights on the dark and winding road to and from our room. A small, barely functioning solar deck light was all that guided us up the darkened stairs. The hot water was first lukewarm then cold; so, no bathing or showers. Receiving no further information or outreach from the staff, checking the PGE outage site was our only option. We had to go to the front desk for two small battery powered lanterns, as none were offered. Whenever we checked with the front desk, we were treated brusquely and without any acknowledgment of our situation. They were likely frustrated, but no less than their guests. We understood that the power outage was not something the staff could control. However, the lack of communication, much less compassion, was far below our expectations and prior experiences over nearly half a century. Upon checking out, the staff person said we would be contacted about refunding at least one night. There has been no further outreach from staff, which is why this review is the only way I can express my sadness and disappointment.

I stayed here overnight on a work trip. I chose Heritage house on a whim due to its proximity to my work location. I was absolutely blown away. The staff treated me very well, upgraded my room to an ocean view, and after driving for 6hrs, walking into my room was magical. Everything on the interior was updated, clean and had everything I needed. The room had a full deck with chairs overlooking the crashing waves, broken Cliffside and the amazing property. My only negative experience was somehow stepping in dog poop between my truck and the door to my room which only represents the irresponsible, selfish dog owners and not the Resort. Wish I could have stayed longer.

Yelp
Upon first blush- the place appears amazing it's only once you are looking you can see how run down the place is - our room had a sink from 1970, chips all over the wall, paint on the ceiling that doesn't match the rest of the ceiling. No streaming services in the tv- requested assistance on casting to the tv - sent a young boy who said he had no clue what to do but facilities was at lunch. No headway so facilities was going to come - guess who never showed up. Who doesn't have streaming services - esp in an expensive place like this. And breakfast, a giant bucket in front of the buffet to capture the water leaking out of the roof. And that breakfast room was outdated- put a penny back into the place for goodness sake.

Yelp
We always enjoy staying at this hotel. The views are spectacular. The ambiance is relaxing. The rooms are spacious. We have stayed in a few different rooms of the property, but I think we prefer the rooms on the northern side of the property the best. Depending on the time of year, the price of the rooms are a little pricy. Overall I would highly recommend this spot.

Yelp
The property and views are beautiful. Other than this - my stay was not enjoyable. 1. I request a King room when booking online. When I arrived at the hotel I confirmed I was in a king and they said yes. I was not in a king. 2. When I arrived to check in it took at least 20 mins. They had to search for my reservation. They were pleasant about it but it shouldn't take that long. 3. After checking in, I had to leave to get dinner because as I read the reviews for their restaurant (what else is there to do while waiting to check in), I realized I was not willing to pay $40+ for a meal that most people did not recommend. 4. The double or queen bed (not even sure) that was in my room was like a dorm bed. I am fairly certain it was a mattress topper on a box spring (See photo). 5. Robes are provided. They aren't useable as far as I'm concerned, but they are there. I wouldn't even use a robe in that condition if it were my personal robe. If I'm paying nearly $200 for a room - you can provide a better robe. (See photo.) 6. There is a handheld shower head option in the shower. Again, I wouldn't touch it considering it was filthy and broken, but it was there. (See photo) Overall, I was not comfortable here. Thankfully I was only there for one night. The most frustrating part is that for the price you are paying, they can afford a few upgrades. If they aren't willing to invest a little in the room, then they need to lower the price and then people won't be misled to think they are getting something worth $200.

Yelp
We stayed here for a night for an anniversary getaway. We arrived at around 3 and checked in. We were told our room wouldn't be ready until 4. That's fine since that's when check in time is anyways. We sat in the lounge/bar area to grab a late lunch. The food was alright, service was great though. At 4, we walked back to the front desk to inquire about our room. Everyone who has arrived around the same time as us had been given keys to their rooms already. We were told our room wasn't ready yet. We were finally given keys at 4:30 pm to a different room than we were originally assigned, after waiting for half an hour in the front desk area. Our new room is the same kind of room as our original room (ocean view). At this time, the front desk lady told us she'd be happy to give us a late check out tomorrow since we had to wait. We told her we'd let her know. (At this point, we were planning to leave at 11 am the next day since we have plans.) At around 6:30 pm, we call Front Desk to place a room service order for delivery at 9 am tomorrow morning. Order is placed and confirmed. Flash forward...it is now 9:30am and our breakfast has not arrived. I call Front Desk and they take my order (again) and confirm with kitchen. About 10 mins later, they call the room and let me know that our order was never placed and that they can place it now and "prioritize" it. She said it would be another 30 mins before our food would arrive. I said yes, since we didn't plan breakfast because the plan WAS room service. At this point, I'm irritated. About half an hour later, around 10 AM, I call Front Desk again to request late check out....since a) we were checked in late and b) our breakfast still hadn't arrived and we are supposed to check out at 11. The Front Desk lady straight up denied my late check out, stating that they have a "high turnover rate" today and there is someone checking into this room tonight. I had to remind her that we checked in late yesterday and was promised late check out AND that our breakfast order was messed up. Only then did she reluctantly agree to an additional 30 minutes. I complained and she agreed to an hour extra. Our breakfast arrived at 10:20 AM. I ordered the brioche French toast. It's sliced really thin and really mushy. Not how French toast should be! The bf ordered the crab Benedict and he says it's really bland. The hollandaise sauce tasted under seasoned. This place has 3 stars from me simply because of the view and the location. If it didn't have this breathtaking panoramic ocean view....it'd probably have only one star from me. Step your game up, Heritage House!

Yelp
Heritage House-- what can I say! The views were amazing Food was incredible. And the staff was lovely. The grounds themselves were breathtaking, and you can easily spend a couple hours exploring. Our room (#19) had an amazing view, and was perfect for our anniversary getaway. It was equipped with a fireplace, heated bathroom floors, and microwave/fridge Only complaint was that our room didn't get serviced when requested, and check-in took a long while.

Yelp
We went there for a weekend - getaway. We reached there around 9 PM on Friday and had to DEAL with so many ISSUES after an exhausting journey - driving through the winding roads ( last 45 miles ) Room : (very dirty) - It was dirty and not cleaned. - It had BIRD POOP on the bed. - The rain shower was not powerful and water temp was quite low, almost cold water. I had to complain but they said that's the way it is. The usual BS about being water efficient. - There were SPIDERS in the room. - The patio window was left open and hence the bird poop and spiders got in to stay with us LOL. - There were no shampoos in the bathroom. - It had only one bathrobe. - I had asked for two double beds but got one. Location : (Good) - it right on the cliff and out seeing the beautiful pacific ocean. Price : (Expensive) - I paid 700 $ (total damage) for two days. - This includes resort fees and tax. - Not worth it when the room is NOT ready for the guest. Food : (Expensive) - Fresh but very expensive. - Quantity is very less. - It's better to drive 20 mins north and you have bunch of breakfast, lunch and dinner options. Overall: - The stay was ok. - I was expecting much more for the price I paid. Will I go next time : NO I won't. Will I recommend this place : NOT at all. There are many other options couple of miles north and closer to the main market.

Yelp
View was great, grounds pleasing, but everything else was only fair to poor. We will look elsewhere in the future. Examples: We were in Rm 50 and it had a slight smell of urine near the bathroom during our entire 4 day visit which we complained about each day with their response that they will take care of it and can't change rooms because none available (we would have left but traveling with friends who were in another bldg); maids didn't change out obviously dirty glasses/mugs, didn't remake our bed one day, and didn't resupply us with clean towels on two occasions. Also, on several occasions during evening hours, no one would answer the phone at the front desk, even after repeated tries. Then check out came and find a $200 "upgrade fee" which we were completely surprise by. STRONGLY suggest you get a written estimate of all charges, including potential room related charges before you occupy your room - we did get it straightened out, but it did take awhile.

Yelp
I stayed here after several good reviews on the web about this quaint little place. This was our first time at Mendocino. The lady at the reception was rude when I called to make a spa appointment. And then I changed the appointment to another day and after several calls I finally got the appointment. This was supposed to be a special occasion for us (anniversary). And I called at least 3 times to confirm the appointment. Of course when we landed up, they had not made the appointment. "Quaint" is usually a nice description but in this case not so. The cabins are nice though and so is the property. But if you are looking fo a luxury experience this ones doesn't cut it.

Yelp
The Heritage House was a bit more rustic when my parents visited in the 1970's and when my husband and I visited in the 1980's, but today after the extensive remodel, the rooms are contemporary, appropriately appointed for the location, and the views are as superb as always. Six of us booked three ocean view rooms (#43, #44, #45) with king size beds for our annual birthday getaway (our 2nd getaway to Heritage House together). All of the rooms had balconies and gorgeous ocean views. #43 has light on two sides, a design element that is essential for me. #43 also had views of the cove as well as the ocean, sunset, and became our gathering spot for the weekend. We were surprised, delighted, and grateful to be welcomed with a bottle of Roederer champagne and chocolate covered strawberries in each of our rooms. It rained all weekend, but that did not dampen the cozy atmosphere of being in this sumptuous property on the gorgeous Mendocino Coast, listening to the crashing waves, and hiking the meandering 37 acres. Each ocean view room featured large showers, double sinks, a refrigerator (and thankfully, not stocked as a minibar), a microwave, and Keurig. To have a room serviced, hang the required placard on the door. Check-in and check-out were slow, the internet was not working due to a lightning strike, and our room phone was out of service, yet the staff are so friendly and accommodating they more than make up for any small hiccup. Surrounded by nature, peace and happiness prevail. If you travel with your pooch, the Heritage House accommodates with a modest additional fee. A shout out of gratitude to Artemis at Heritage House for arranging this memorable trip for us. If you are seeking a quiet place to unwind, explore, and lap up the beauty of the rugged coast, this is the place to stay. Romance is in the air.

Yelp
I'm not sure why the reviews are so poor. Stayed here for two nights last weekend and had a great experience. Clean room ready upon arrival and great service throughout. The property is gorgeous. They replenish firewood constantly which came in handy on a rainy weekend. Room service and breakfast in the main building were highlights as well. It had been 10 or so years since staying here and so glad we went back!

Yelp
My daughter treated us to a stay at Heritage House Resort for Easter Weekend. Though we had a bumpy start (assigned room was already occupied) our stay was overall fabulous. The room was large and well appointed. A large king size bed held a plethora of pillows and was perfect for a good night's sleep. Also fabulous was the shower with dual shower heads. A person could get lost in there. However, it is the restaurant I truly recommend. From breakfast through dessert it was all delicious. The Belgian Waffles were like cotton candy. Crisp on the outside and melts in your mouth. Hamburgers cooked to perfection were brought by room service. Finally the dinner selection was magnificent. I had crab cakes that had a huge amount of crab meat and my daughter had what she termed the "best filet mignon she ever had." I would definitely recommend Heritage House Resort and spa for your next weekend getaway.

Yelp
My wife and I spent three delightful days at this beautiful resort on the ocean. The physical facility was clean and well maintained and supported by an efficient customer service team ( including two very helpful ladies named Sarah! ).

Dennis S.

Yelp
I had planned over a month ago to stay here and celebrate our 1st Anniversary together. Seemed perfect, nice restaurant- nice lounge bar, beautiful location. One problem though. The manager Sarah would return multiple calls to her because they just informed me 3 days prior to our stay that the restaurant and bar will be closed due to a wedding. 1st- I'm sure they knew about the wedding way in advance. So they could have let me known sooner. Second this kinda ruined my plans to have a great evening with my wife being that we don't have to leave and go somewhere to eat and drink. Just stay at the resort and have a nice evening. Anyways I don't want anything for free but they offered me $100 off the room- room and package was $800 for the night. Doesn't seem like much of a comp. the manager wouldn't even call me. Horrible management. Danielle who helped me was great. They just canceled my reservation without asking me because I wasn't happy with the situation. Find a better place to stay until they replace the manager.
