Phillip Lim Traveled to Sri Lanka Just for These Midcentury Modern Hotels

"The Heritance Kandalama Hotel is a seven-story, 152-room hotel built into the side of a cliff in the interior of Sri Lanka. Opened in 1994, it was the first LEED-green-certified hotel in the world and is known for its integration with nature, covered in a thick canopy of trees and climbing vines."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An Unforgettable Stay at Heritance Kandalama We spent three nights at Heritance Kandalama and it was truly a magical experience from start to finish. The location is simply breathtaking nestled amidst nature, the architecture blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere. The food was absolutely amazing, with a wide variety of delicious options that catered to all tastes. Every meal felt like a culinary experience. But what truly made our stay unforgettable was the staff. Their hospitality was exceptional. Everyone we encountered was warm, welcoming, and always ready to assist with a genuine smile. Their attention to detail and eagerness to help made us feel completely at home. Heritance Kandalama is more than just a hotel it’s an experience. We left feeling relaxed, recharged, and incredibly well looked after. Highly recommend for anyone looking for luxury, nature, and top-tier hospitality in one beautiful package.

We stayed for two nights in a suite and had a very relaxing and enjoyable holiday in this wonderful hotel surrounded by and literally immersed in nature. Check in was very quick and smooth, valet parking is very efficient, suite was spacious and very well maintained with a lovely big bathroom; it was a new experience to shower with curious monkeys looking in! Bed was super comfy and we enjoyed the views of the mountains and lake from all sides, sipping a coffee on the balcony watching birds, squirrels and monkeys in the morning. |Food was absolutely fantastic, massive spread with great variety and very tasty at all 3 meals. Service was excellent, staff is attentive, courteous and very professional. Gym is very well equipped and the gym trainer is excellent. Pools were lovely, I specially enjoyed the infinity pool overlooking the lake at sunset - saw a majestic elephant drinking water at the lake one evening which was an added bonus. |Best part of our holiday was the live entertainment. A wonderful traditional dance performance by very talented hotel staff, live band playing some great local tunes, and a lone flute player playing hauntingly beautiful melodies at sunset on the rocks overlooking the pools. The best entertainers were an amazingly talented, unforgettable oriental band and vocalist playing vintage Sinhala songs in the lobby bar one morning - same group that played in 2006 when we were last at this lovely hotel! The overall vibe of the hotel with lots of greenery, boulders and monkeys is very calm and soothing. We had an unforgettable holiday and will be back for a longer stay.

We stayed 2 nights in a suite in the Sigiriya wing at Heritance Kandalama, and it was a truly memorable experience. The hotel is beautifully set in nature, with amazing views of the lake and jungle. The architecture blends perfectly into the environment, creating a very calm and peaceful atmosphere. Our suite was spacious, clean, and offered stunning views. It was a joy to wake up to birdsong and see monkeys in the trees outside. The pools are a bit small, but still very pleasant — especially the one overlooking the lake. We also booked a birdwatching session through the hotel, and it was one of the highlights of our stay. The guide was very knowledgeable and helped us spot many different bird species we wouldn’t have noticed on our own. The food was excellent, with a wide variety of local and international dishes. All the staff were friendly, welcoming, and helpful throughout our stay. This is a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature, while also being close to attractions like Sigiriya and Dambulla. Highly recommended!

One of the most beautiful hotels I have ever stayed at is the Heritance Kandalama. Everything in the hotel was really beautiful. The room facilities and food were very good. The buffet had a good spread. The pool view was the most beautiful I have ever seen. We hope to come back again.

Thank you for a really great experience throughout our stay. The staff were friendly, courteous and always ready to help. The dining was very good. Here again, the chefs on duty were friendly and happy to oblige with variations to dishes if required. Nothing appeared too difficult. Due to an unexpected medical incident, we had the privilege and pleasure of meeting the "Guest relations executive, Apsara", who proved to be an amazing and outstanding Ambassador for the Hotel. She provided unconditional support right through our stay and made sure we were not wanting in any way. It was obvious she had many other duties to get done, but at no time did she not respond to us whether it be day or night. She was personable and made you feel like family rather than a guest. She excels in her role and we thank her and wish her well. Thank you for a great experience. We will visit again next time we are in Sri Lanka.

We recently spent a night at the breathtaking Heritance Kandalama, staying in a luxurious suite with my wife and our baby boy — and what an incredible experience it was! From the moment we arrived, the service was top-notch. Every staff member we met was courteous, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The food was simply amazing, with a variety of delicious options at every meal. As a special treat, we were even given a tour of their long, spotless, and well-organized kitchen — a real behind-the-scenes experience that impressed us greatly. The highlight of our stay was the surprise birthday celebration organized by the staff during the dinner buffet. I was touched when they brought out a lovely cake and even had a violin performance — such a thoughtful and memorable gesture! Our baby boy absolutely loved the jacuzzi, and we all felt completely relaxed and pampered throughout our stay. Above all, the hotel itself is a masterpiece of architecture by the legendary Geoffrey Bawa. Its design seamlessly blends with nature, offering a one-of-a-kind experience that feels both luxurious and spiritually grounding. 🌿 This is not just a hotel — it's a destination. Everyone should visit Heritance Kandalama at least once in their lifetime. Highly recommended! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
