8 Best Parks in Houston

"The vibrancy of Hermann Park, which celebrated its centennial in 2014, comes from the six million visitors who come every year, all entering past a giant statue of Sam Houston. You can spend an entire day here; Hermann Park is home to the Houston Zoo, situated in the middle of the 445-acre spread, the Miller Outdoor Theatre (a free performing-arts venue), a Japanese Zen garden, an 18-hole golf course, bird-watching, and the scenic McGovern Centennial Gardens. For fishing enthusiasts, there's a lake filled with bass and catfish." - Marcy de Luna

The commons playground at Hermann Park is so lovely. There are plenty of things for children to stay entertained and active. There is a water park side where children can play in the sand and pump water throughout a system. It's both fun and a learning adventure. The other side as seen in a few photos I took has lots of slides and climbing areas. As an adult I kept wandering around, climbing on areas meant for both adults and kids to climb/hike. It was fun being able to join my God children. There are also several very well maintained individual bathroom stalls on both sides of the playground. And not too far from there is a nice cafe. If you wanted to you could spend all day at this park and never get bored.

I absolutely love Memorial Hermann parks — they’ve become one of our favorite places to spend time as a family. The splash pads are amazing — big, clean, and perfect for cooling off on hot days. There’s so much space for kids to run, play, and explore, and the water features keep them entertained for hours. It’s such a gem, especially if you have little ones. Highly recommend checking it out if you haven’t already!

Very clean and beautiful park. Alot of friendly birds ducks turtles bunnies squirrels etc running around. The playground and water park is amazing and very innovative. The train is handy for getting around this enormous place. a lot of clean bathrooms as well. Definitely worth a trip with the kids

I don't often frequent the Museum District. So, it's been awhile since my last visit to the park. However, my last visit has convinced me to frequent it more often. I was originally there to see the Great Elephant Migration temporary exhibit, and I decided to take full advantage of the area. I'm a hobbyist photographer, and was using the beautiful landscape to study composition, and the area was perfect for it. I stopped by on a Thursday, close to evening, and the best parking was close to the Miller Outdoor Theatre, as lots and streetside, close to the museums, were full. There were hundreds of people out, doing a variety of activities like lounging, eating, enjoying the playgrounds. Quite a wonderful atmosphere. On top of all that, there were so many amenities to participate in. I grabbed a snow cone at a food truck, that was close to a carousel, at the commons. I also swung by the Japanes Botanical Gardens, the Sam Houston Statue, the reflecting pond, and the paddle boat area. All quite peaceful, well maintained, and inviting.

This is such a large and beautiful park. It’s easily better than Memorial or Buffalo Bayou Park. There’s just so many free attractions here (Japanese garden, the Mount, water park, etc) compared to other places. The parking is free. There’s even a train that circles the place, which not only lets you enjoy the view, but also brings you close to every attraction without having to walk in the summer heat. The train isn’t free but the all-day ticket is easy worth it because there’s so much to do. This is one of the best parks I’ve been to anywhere in the world.

What a gorgeous park and so much to explore. I love this place. The ducks & geese didn't even run away as you walk by them. Love it and so beautiful!

Yelp
I visited The Great Elephant Migration Exhibit at Hermann Park. Marvelous and inspiring workmanship!! Before you visit see park maps displaying where they are located. Be prepared to walk the beautiful park. I thoroughly enjoyed the installation and there were so many people visiting as well. A few more days left in Houston. "From Tuesday, April 1, through Wednesday, April 30, The Great Elephant Migration can be experienced at Hermann Park for free during the Park's operating hours of 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. The majority of herd are located in the Park's newest destination, the Commons, with additional pods at the Houston Museum of Natural Science and in the Texas Medical Center. "The Great Elephant Migration is more than an art installation--it is a call to action and a place to experience joy," said Cara Lambright, president & CEO of Hermann Park Conservancy. "By bringing this breathtaking global effort to Hermann Park, we are inviting our community to be part of a worldwide movement to protect ecosystems, eradicate invasive species, and inspire change. These are shared values that span continents."

Yelp
Haven't been walking at Hermann Park in so long! But now that it's cold, I thought it would be a great idea! My friend and I ended up walking 3 hours here! It's kind of an endless place to walk actually. They've build a playground and a whole other section! If you're looking for a picnic, to walk your dogs or just to get out, this park is the obvious choice.

Yelp
I absolutely enjoy the walking trail at Hermann Park. Most of it is shaded, but there's a stretch that allows just the right amount of sunshine. There's ample convenient parking with no hassle or chaos. Additionally, the park features various amenities to discover around the area as well...

Yelp
A beautiful 445 acre city park right across the street from Rice University in Houston, Hermann Park was born when industrialist George H. Hermann in 1914 donated this property to the City of Houston to create a municipal park. Most of the land is used for the Houston Zoo and Hermann Park Golf Course, but there are plenty of other areas in the North end that can be explored for free (including the Miller outdoor amphitheater). It is one of the nicest and largest public parks we've been to, with plenty of walking and biking trails. It also has a lot of dedicated free parking, along with multiple things to do. My wife, nephew (Rice student), and I spent a late Tuesday morning here. We wanted to visit the Japanese gardens but it didn't seem open, even after the 10am opening time advertised. Thus we explored other parts of the park, always looking for shady spots because of the heat and humidity. We did visit the science museum which contains a permanent butterfly exhibit and took a 'kiddie' train ride around the park. One picture area is the Reflection Pool at the North End of the park. It has an obelisk (similar to the Washington Monument and called the Pioneer Memorial Obelisk) and is a great place to hangout in more temperate weather. We saw many instances of different types of ducks walking around the park, extremely tame. I later learned that the ones that have turkey-like heads are called Muscovy ducks and are not native (thus invasive) to the area. We also saw mallards that were common in the area where I grew up. One nice thing is that I don't notice much duck/geese droppings on the walkways or the grass...in the Midwest, this is a big problem (both visibility and sanitary wise).

Yelp
Such a great green space in the middle of the city, there are plenty of parking space if you know where to look. There are many different section of the park that is very different vibe and I love the little train that goes around the park, the Japanese garden is a must visit at the park. There is also one rail stop near the park. I have been coming here still I was a child and I seen the charges they have done to make the parking better. I love visiting Hermann Park.

Yelp
This is super nice park in Houston. There are all kinds of statues and monuments here including the Sam Houston monument. It's a great place to talk a walk also.

Yelp
I've visited Hermann Park before, and parking is always a bit of a challenge, especially on weekends. This time, we were lucky to catch the final day of *The Great Elephant Migration*, an inspiring exhibit created by The Real Elephant Collective, a community of 200 Indigenous artisans from the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in Southern India. These talented artists handcrafted 100 life-sized elephant sculptures, each one rich with intricate detail. The exhibit aims to raise awareness and funds for wildlife conservation and promote human-wildlife coexistence. It was the perfect day to take it all in with mild temperatures made for a pleasant walk before the triple-digit heat returns. Grateful for such a beautiful and meaningful experience. I personally find that Hermann Park shares similar elements like open green spaces, statues, and even an obelisk-like structure, giving it a comparable vibe to the National Mall in D.C. However, Hermann Park is smaller in scale and has its own unique features, such as the Miller Outdoor Theatre, Japanese garden and Botanic garden.

Yelp
For me, Hermann Park is one of those places that I've passed by so many times, but I haven't been to before now, my 43rd birthday. While not as well known as NYC's Central Park or Chicago's Millennium Park, it's a very fine Houston landmark that I believe is criminally underrated. Do you have relatives coming in from out of town? Do your kids need a place to burn excessive energy? Do you have a milestone event like a wedding or a quinceañera coming up and need an ideal location for a photo shoot? Then Hermann Park it is. My favorite thing about this illustrious green space is the Sam Houston Statue. For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to check it out up close. And what better day to do so than on my cake day? The best times to come here (seriously) are like during the fall or spring. I was sweating a bit as I walked here on a ninetysomething degree day, but it felt good to scratch an entry off my bucket list.
google avatar

Charisse T.

Yelp
It's 7pm in the evening and just pleasant enough to hang outside at the park. We decided to take the kids to the park to unwind some of this built up energy. It not too hot but very muggy. But at least the sun is not leaning on our backs. The crowd has settled down a lot because yes school is about to start back for most students. We had a blast with the kids today all the new slides and attractions are incredible. We walked the entire park and the scenery just got better each time. We are gelato and it very tasty.

Yelp
Cool park. Hot in July and there were parts closed off for the 4th of July festivities. The museum was a nice solace and would recommend the butterfly museum! You can buy tickets there and it's nice that you can just buy them by exhibit or for everything, so a choose your own adventure really Things are pretty much in walking distance and the park is nicely accessible by way of the metro red line

Yelp
Incredible park. 30 mins of pedal boating for $14.50. Free entry. Japanese tea garden had adorable ducklings and turtles. Heard good things about the art museum + zoo nearby. Train circles around the entire park. Wonderful spot to visit alone or with friends / loved ones. Not sure if I have ever been more pleasantly surprised by a park visit. Will definitely visit again next time I am in the area.
google avatar

Gillian B.

Yelp
Finally they opened the walking trail from the science museum to memorial hermann hospital. Love that they made parking spots for people to use. The space looks very inviting and the kids will love this new space. The scenery is beautiful and I enjoyed my walk.
google avatar

Yelp
Very awesome park with a headless statue of Sam Houston, a mini-version of the Washington Monument in D.C., and a cool Japanese garden (that was closed). Great spot for families and maybe picnics. Definitely a recommended spot to check out of you are in Houston!
google avatar

Yelp
This park is simply beautiful and amazing! We really enjoyed our visit to Hermann Park. We had fun with the pedal boats. My legs weren't so happy though, lol! It was my first time trying this activity and I'll definitely do it again. We also rode the train throughout the park. We ate lunch at Sunday Press which is formerly known as Ginger Kale. Overall, we enjoyed our experience here.

Yelp
Let me tell y'all, this place...I love it. From the views, to the ducks that get me pumped up about being alive on this beautiful planet. *.* Nestled in the heart of the city, Hermann Park is a verdant urban oasis inviting you to escape all the buzzing and immerse yourself in nature. Stretched across 445 acres, this enchanting park is a sanctuary for both locals seeking a tranquil retreat and travelers yearning for a taste of Houston's greenery. Towering trees sway gently in the breeze, their lush foliage providing a shady canopy under which to stroll. The vibrant blooms of azaleas and roses paint the landscape with bursts of color, while the calm waters of McGovern Lake invite you to take a leisurely paddleboat ride or simply enjoy a moment of serenity by its shores. But Hermann Park offers more than just scenic beauty. Nature enthusiasts will delight in the park's diverse ecosystems, from the verdant meadows of Miller Outdoor Theatre to the marshes of the Zoo's Wildlife Habitat. Birdwatchers can spot a myriad of avian species flitting amongst the branches, while botany enthusiasts will revel in the park's extensive collection of native and exotic plants. For those seeking a bit of adventure, Hermann delivers with its array of recreational activities. Lace up your sneakers and explore miles of winding trails perfect for jogging, biking, or simply meandering at your own pace. Enjoy picnics and playtime and let's not forget about the cultural gems! The awe-inspiring Museum of Natural Science invites visitors on a journey through the wonders of the natural world, while the breathtaking beauty of the Japanese Garden provides a meditative escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Whether you're seeking solace in nature, craving adventure, or thirsting for cultural enrichment, Hermann Park offers an unforgettable experience that's sure to leave you enchanted and eager to return time and time again. So pack a picnic, bring your paint brushes, lace up your walking shoes, and prepare to lose yourself in the natural splendor of Hermann Park like I like to do so much. Note: I don't have many pictures of this place even though I'm a regular here. But that's because I get so busy enjoying the park I forget my phone!

Yelp
What a beautiful park, made even prettier by the Christmas lights!! Parking was so easy to find. I parked in the Hobby Gargarge, just a stone's throw away from the park. We, Lulu and I came here for the Christmas tree lighting, and even the surrounding area was lit with beautiful decorations of the holiday spirit. Jordan Sparks and eleven-year-old Eduardo Antonio's mariachi band put on a beautiful festive show along with many other singers. I can say this from all of us: a great time was had by everyone.
google avatar

Vicky B.

Yelp
Truly a highlight of my trip to Houston, and an absolute must see. An oasis in the city. There are several attractions here including a beautiful and peaceful Japanese garden that is home to several varieties of ducks and birds, as well as turtles, friendly squirrels, and more. There's a 10 minute train ride that takes you through the park for $3.75. There are paddle boat rentals, and trails and shaded areas. Many paths are paved and wheelchair and stroller accessible. You can also access the zoo and science museum from the park. With a stop on the red line right at the park, getting here is easy as well. Great work to the conservancy, volunteers, and donors who made this park into the wonderful place that it is.

Yelp
Woww, this park is hugee and stunning! Downside is the parking... Parking was terrible. I arrived to the park at 11am on Saturday and I was circling around trying to find parking. People were fighting over parking spots.. It was a mess! On the brighter side, once you find parking, the park is beautiful. They offer pedal boats at a really decent price. It's for 30 mins and I thought it was worth it. I walked around to the Japanese Tea Garden which was beautiful. The park is huge and I only styed for a couple hours. I wish I had more time to see what else they offered. Side note: A little girl drew a photo of me while I was at the park. She's extremely talented and I'm flattered.
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
It is really relaxing coming here walking around and going to the botanical gardens. I always see lots of pretty flowers and animals. The zoo is nearby and if you golf, they have a driving range. Definitely check out Miller Outdoor theater because they have a lot of free concerts. They just celebrated 100 years of free concerts. It's awesome.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm really shocked that I'm barely doing a review because I've been coming to this park for years. Probably since I was a child. So I don't know 35 years or so. Anyway this is one of my favorite parks to come to and all of Houston. The park itself is quite large. I come here and I walk or a bike. Great trail to do both. Catch some cool wild life it really soak in the Houston vibe. You will see a ton of people walking, biking etc. During the day the views are absolutely nice. Great photo opportunities all over this park. If you're not from Houston I suggest you come here ASAP and try this park out. You will definitely like it. ************************************************* Disclaimer use caution when coming here at night. ************************************************* We came here at night a couple weeks ago and let me tell you what this place is like the video game resident evil. Rats crawling everywhere. Homeless people everywhere. It's quite dangerous at night and I suggest do not come here at night time unless you carry a concealed handgun license because at night time it is very sketchy. We felt very unsafe at night and I will be the last time I come here at night ever. I had no idea this place was taken over by the homeless population at night time. Very dangerous. At night time. *************************************************
google avatar

Yelp
Plenty of open space, walking trails, and places to sit. The Japanese garden is very nice. People must feed the ducks and squirrels because they come up to you as you're walking and the squirrels will sit up and reach out.
google avatar

Annabelle R.

Yelp
This is a very large and beautiful park next to Rice University, that seems to be well-maintained. Lots of grassy fields, plenty of trees for shade, a lovely rectangular lake with waterbirds, Pioneer Memorial Obelisk and fountain, and a gorgeous Japanese Garden which is like a park within a park (except the Japanese Garden is typically only open 9-5pm, or until 6pm during warmer seasons). Magnificent scenery, lots of space to walk around or run, or for kids to play, and a perfect setting for picnicking. I can't speak for parking, since I was visiting from California this past weekend, but everything about this place is just amazing.
google avatar

Denise S.

Yelp
We had a nice time sightseeing with my cousin who was visiting from out of town. Great place to take pictures & go for a stroll. They have a beautiful Japanese Garden as well. The train ride is very reasonably priced and takes you around the museum district and park. Lots of areas to have picnics, fly kites, and just take in the scenery.
google avatar

Kalvin K.

Yelp
A staple in the galleria area of Houston. It's a big park that has lakes, trails, and the museum and zoo. Overall a great place to absorb the outdoors and get some exercise.

Madisyn H.

Yelp
Amazing park! Parking wasn't a hassle at all! We went Friday morning and there were at least 4-5 parking lots with plenty of spaces to park! We decided to buy time with the b-cycles and had an amazing time! B-cycles were cheap and at the end my friends bike locked into the spot but the app didn't register it as a completed ride so we called the customer support which only took 2 minutes and they helped out with everything! I highly recommend biking throughout this park because there's so much to see and plenty of places to park the bike if you want to walk through the gardens! The gardens were really beautiful. Between the water fountains, gorgeous flowers, the wildlife, and the amazing cafe, train ride, paddle boats, etc this truly is the perfect spot to hangout! The train ride was a little confusing at first because it says you need to get a ticket at kinder station but you're allowed to get in at any spot (without a ticket) and then they bring you to Kinder Station where everyone is required to get off and you can buy a ticket if you need to get back on it to be dropped off at a different station. Paddle boats were super fun! $13 for a half hour. I highly recommend not bringing any bags or personal items on the boat so you can have a chance to go under the water fountain and get soaked/cooled off! The cafe was delicious. I got a cookie parfait and chicken fingers/fries and they both were really good. The cafe is called ginger kale if anyone wants to look up the menu! The japanese garden and Centennial Garden were both filled with beautiful plants and lots of wildlife.

Jessica P.

Yelp
It's super cool here, and very peaceful I enjoyed my visit. We went on a Monday morning is was super hit outside but there was plenty of shade in the park!!

Yelp
Enjoying Sunday with my mini bestie. Stopped by Aunt Toni's Kooliscles, never had flavored pickles before lol.. very curious about how it would taste and ended up getting the kook-aid pickles. Soooo good, see below..
google avatar

Saba E.

Yelp
We wanted to get out of the house; I mean, who doesn't? So, we thought we'd take an early morning stroll of Hermann Park on a Sunday (we hadn't been since the renovation/facelift). It was a lovely walk, but we weren't the only ones with the idea, so be sure to bring a mask, even if you're not wearing it the whole time. There are grounds-people patrolling to ensure that picture-taking permits, dog-waste monitoring, and access to all areas is going according to rules of the park. Just be aware that some areas of the park are closed due to social/physical distancing measures, but you can still get a good run or walk in and around the grounds. We even ventured into the Japanese Garden, and it was sad to see how many people weren't staying on the trails or not following the listed rules. It seemed to be ruining some of the park's aesthetic. It's nice that there are lovely walking trails that are accessible in Houston right now, and some that are also dog-friendly (but not all of them, so reads signage carefully)!

Yelp
I've been taking a walk around this park, 3 of the last 5 days. My son is the navigator since i am geographically challenged. Lots of nice scenery including the little train, and ducks. The route we've taken is about 2 miles. Lots of people out enjoying the park, parking spaces were hard to come by.

Michelle L.

Yelp
What a lovely park, our little family really enjoy the time here. Both of my kids really like chasing those ducks
google avatar

Yelp
We have been going to Hermann Park for 20+ years. Beautiful park! I highly recommend going for a walk around the lake. You can stop by the reflection pool, the Japanese tea garden, and the McGovern Centennial Garden. The Houston Zoo is also located here. Lots of playgrounds scattered around the lake. I used to love the hot dog carts and the ice cream carts too. I've also picnicked around the park many times! And lots of fond memories of riding the train around the park. :) We love the free shows at Miller Outdoor Theater. You can get tickets for seats, or you can just picnic on the hill! Picnicking on the hill is our favorite, and we usually bring binoculars. Also, if you ever perform there (my dance school used to), the backstage dressing rooms are HUGE and very nice. Plenty of free parking! A lot of people also take prom/quincenera/wedding photos here. There's also the butterfly museum and the museum of natural science. There can be a lot of homeless people at night though. You can check out my timelapse of the walk around the lake if you go on youtube and search for 'Walking around Hermann Park Time-Lapse | Centennial Gardens, Japanese Garden, McGovern Lake'. A must-go in Houston!

Yelp
Fun park in the center of Houston. Parking can be difficult on weekends but great for walks, dates, running, visiting the zoo etc. Located close to Rice and has a couple of parks inside which are great for photos

Yelp
Absolutely an amazing park 1 of a kind if u come to the Houston area u must see will be sorry if u don't so much room great for kids takes an entire day

Yelp
Awesome view. My family and I consider this place so peaceful. It was raining a lot, so we were not able to walk
google avatar

Chesnee V.

Yelp
Pedal boats, trains, Japanese gardens, rolling hills, a playground, an amphitheater, a splash area and more. Train rides are 3.75 per person; pedal boats are $12 for 30 minutes per boat which can hold 4 people each. Parking is free, but a mess. Expect to spend a bit of time trying to find a space. There are ducks EVERYWHERE here. They are very interested in the people and will come up and greet you. Highly recommended location. The pedal boats closed at 6 and the train closed at 7 when we were there.

Alyssa Y.

Yelp
One of my favorite parks to visit, here in Houston. There is a ton to see and experience. It is a very clean and well taken care of park. (Check out on their website to find ways you can volunteer here). Plenty of candid shot moments to be had here, so bring your camera and also prepare to potentially be in the background of many others taking both professional & nonprofessional photos. The Japanese Garden is a must see, very serene and a great place to find your Zen and meditate. (Free experience) The park also connects with the Houston Zoo; a beautful & well taken care of environment for both the animals and the guests. *Note: make sure to buy your tickets online before visiting. I had a picnic with friends here by the fountain and it was a wonderful time. I am really looking forward to Miller Outdoor Theater opening up and experiencing their free live performances. The only reason I can't give this place 5 stars is because parking can often be a pain in the butt... especially if you go in the evening or on a weekend. But there are multiple lots and even street-meter parking if you're willing to walk a little. (Parking lots are free)
google avatar

Nikki A.

Yelp
Expect to sit in stand still traffic for longer than an hour if you get here after 12 on a weekend. Finding parking is literally the luck if the draw on the weekends. An absolute nightmare.
