How to Upgrade Your Airplane Drink, According to Pros

"I note Richie Barrow of the lauded Hero Bar in Nairobi, Kenya recommends bringing a few mini-bottles aboard—particularly Scrappy’s cardamom or black lemon bitters—to ramp up standard airplane pours like a Vodka Soda, advising that bitters add depth even to the simplest drinks and can be slipped into a carry-on or toiletries bag. He also suggests using Tabasco’s classic 1/8-ounce mini-bottle to kick up the spice on an otherwise bland Bloody Mary or Red Snapper. These tips come from the reality that in-flight cocktails are usually limited to airline miniatures, so a few thoughtful extras can markedly improve the experience." - Beau Hayhoe

Hero Restaurant – Great food, great views, with one limitation Hero at Village Market offers a beautiful rooftop dining experience with a relaxed, upscale atmosphere. The poolside setting, soft lighting, and elevated views over Nairobi make it an excellent spot for an evening out, especially around sunset. The food is well done and thoughtfully presented. The grilled skewers are juicy and nicely charred, the fried dumplings are crisp with good flavour, and the sauces complement the dishes well. Drinks are refreshing and pair nicely with the overall experience. Nothing feels rushed, and the ambience remains calm and enjoyable. One important point to note: babies are only allowed on the poolside seating, not the other sections of the restaurant. While this may work for couples or adults dining out, it can be a limitation for families who want more seating flexibility. Food: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ View & Ambience: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ Family-friendliness: ⭐⭐⭐ Overall: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A solid choice for good food and views, with minor restrictions to be aware of if dining with young children.

I had a decent experience at Hero, but there’s room for improvement. The food was good, nothing exceptional, for the price point. We arrived when the restaurant was fairly empty, yet the service was surprisingly slow to get started. While the cocktails tasted great, the pours were very small considering the premium price. It’s a good relaxed spot, but I’m not convinced the value matches the cost.

I have been coming to Hero since 2022, the service, the meals, the experience with the heroes, outstanding every time! 👏🏾 I was back there today for sushi and I absolutely loved it! They were very accommodating seeing as I had a stroller with me and for that I am grateful. ☺️ This time round I was served by Dr Strange, we had the brisket, the two-faced salmon roll and the crispy prawn roll. Our compliments to the chefs! Many thanks for making our experience unforgettable and for the exceptional service. Can’t wait to be back! Keep up the good work. 🥳

Considered one of the best bars in Africa. We came in to try the cocktails. The presentation was beautiful. As for the taste, I’d say they lacked flavor — the cocktails felt a bit flat, though that’s just my personal preference. We ordered two of the same ranens, but one came sprinkled with seasoning and the other didn’t — not sure why. The eggs in the portion weren’t pickled. The bar left mixed impressions overall; I’d rate it 4 out of 5.

Update: I decided to give Hero a second chance after this. After explaining our last experience to the manager he as very apologetic and assured us that our experience is not the norm. I am happy to say that the service was 1000% better. Dr Strange was attentive and truly took care of all of us in his section. The sushi was much fresher and tasted great. Still not sure about the prawn tempura but it’s alright. Thank you Hero team. We are thankful that the experience was not the norm and can actually be top notch. Oh Hero. A beautiful restaurant with a creatively designed menu, but thats about it. The food is just OK as others have stated. They sound really tasty but they miss the mark. The prawn tempura was very greasy, sushi was not as freshly prepared as I would have liked and the service was truly underwhelming. The actual lady who sat us at our table was wonderful, but that is where the service stopped. Our waitress looked tired and bored. Had us sitting for over 15 minutes before our order was taken. Sushi was brought with no dish for the soya sauce, no chop sticks. Did not come to pick up our dishes once we were done. Only did so when we asked for the bill. We were going to order another roll and maybe try desert, but the service was so bad and it took so long that we gave up. Infact we did not even order with her. We had to pull some random waiter from somewhere to take our order. Anyway, i think Hero is overrated now and likely for hotel guest or foreigners.

Wonderful restaurant especially around sunset time. The service was good but a bit slow. I’d recommend having their signature cocktails

One of very few restaurant that would deserve 6 or 7 or more stars... Everything perfect from start to end. The menu and decoration is amazingly thought, the atmosphere is fantastic, the service with Ironman Joe is top notch, all cocktails are original and perfectly balanced and original, the food is simply fantastic! Thank you. I'll come again for sure.

Se visited Hero for a late night meal on a Saturday night. We were seated promptly, despite not having a reservation. Overall, the food was tasty and service was fantastic. Our server Lazarus was friendly and prompt. We really loved the atmosphere and vibes, particularly the spray painted murals and music. My only disappointment was wishing the drinks had a little more ‘punch’ to them. They were fine but not as memorable as I had hoped.
