Herwig's Austrian Bistro

Awesome establishment in downtown State College. With a variety of dishes--both regulars and specials--visitors can enjoy many types of authentic Austrian cuisine. Personally, I enjoy the sausage dishes. Can't go wrong with those. Also, love the in-your-face humor at this place.

I can only imagine that the reason a below review calls Herwig's the best German food in central PA is because it's the only German food in central PA. My colleague and I went here for dinner and both of us were disappointed by the gap between the hype that reviews had enstilled in us and the reality that befell us. He got the Wienerschnitzel and I got the Bratwurst Platte (spicy). I can only relay his comments on the Wienerschnitzel: "I feel ripped off". As for the sausage: maybe I am not well enough acquainted with Austrian cooking, but the texture of the link was not enjoyable: the stuffing was too finely ground. The flavor did not, unfortunately, make up for the texture. The Saurkraut was also, plainly, mediocre. Certainly these guys can do better? Three stars because I'm hopeful.

I've eaten here for years. Nothing else like it! Homemade bratwurst and sauerkraut, delicious desserts. All authentic Austrian foods. A State College gem!

Absolutely incredible restaurant serving a wide variety of Austrian dishes. Every meal at Herwig’s is certain to delight, and each visit is a treat. Pork and bacon dishes are their specialities, including their own sausages, slow roasted pork, and the amazing cinnabacon rolls. One of the highlights of visiting State College—Herwig’s will be missed!

Nice place for Austrian food. Service and very nice. It's serves in a pretty big portion. Take home is not recommended so please order accordingly.

Herwig's has amazing authentic Austrian home cooking. It will be closing it's doors soon, unfortunately. Better get there while you can.

I love this place. The chicken is so fresh and I just fall in love with the schnitzel. Though a bit expensive it's still worth the money

My family and I (14 others) attended this place on a whim after we were poorly treated down the street. Most of us are from Canada and travelled a long way to visit our family from the area. I understand accommodating a large group is difficult and we were willing to split up. Herwig's allowed us in a few minutes before they were open and had us all seated at a large table together. The staff were friendly and funny. They joked around with my family and made the experience special. They remembered our names and took time to speak to each of us even if it was just a goofy conversation. The food... it was amazing!!! Homemade items that were priced well. It tasted incredible. Also, all the breakfast items were unique and offered something different than traditional eggs and fatty bacon. The bacon and egg dish is made with Double smoked thick cut bacon ... better than you will find anywhere else. We also split a ton of the Bacon Cinnamon rolls and they were superb. The bacon pancakes made my sons day! We will be back when we return to College State. I highly recommend this place not only for its great food but for the friendly staff and atmosphere.
