I have been using Hester's bags since the 1990's, so feel well qualified to talk about quality and service.
My first bag was made in the shape of a Bishop's Mitre, from US hide (apparently a one-off design as HVE normally uses Italian leather). It is practically bomb-proof and still gets admiring looks after more than 20 years. I also own a reversible briefcase, also form the 1990's, a wallet and a card holder. My spouse owns several pieces too.
Clearly, although the price is high, HVE's bags and other items are built to last, so the price is reasonable when one takes into account longevity. Designs tend to be innovative, playful and practical; I well recall HVE describing to me the genesis of her Chianti bag - she need a practical way of taking a bottle of wine to a friend's house.
HVE used to operate a lifetime repair policy. This was honoured in a way that made me feel like family. I found that on more recent visits, when my Mitre needed restitching, that I was treated by shop staff with a degree of frosty hauteur that was not worthy of the HVE business. It felt like that HVE was now, merely, a brand. I wish this wan't true, as I have such fond memories of the little shop and still use all my pieces.
