Yelp
It's really funny to me how vastly different Google vs Yelp reviews are.
While in the area, I quickly referred to Google maps for a simple dinner and found Hey Noodles (rated 4.7) - considering I always have a lingering craving for noodles, this was perfect. I am usually a bit intimidated going into restaurants in Chinatown, as half the time I don't know what I to order. But I feel safe in the comforting strands of noodles.
Walking in, I didn't have strong expectations. A quarter of the tables were occupied, and I was seated promptly. There were only two people working - one in the kitchen, and one processing orders. I was told to scan the QR code, which took me to a website where you could order "online" - efficient! But they also have paper menus, so you can use to order in person.
I decided to get the cucumber salad, and the sesame paste dry noodles with minced pork. Once I placed the order, the server confirmed that they received it.
As I waited for the next 20-25 minutes, the place filled up. Not only with in-person diners, but also pick ups and deliveries. I certainly wasn't expecting to wait that long, but I wasn't in a rush for once.
The food was excellent! For what you can get downtown for ~$20, you can't beat this. The cucumber salad was refreshing and the noodles were chewy, flavourful, although a bit too oily for me.
For a no-fuss dinner, this is a great spot - especially during non-rush hours. Or just get take out. Overhearing a conversation, it's usually only 2-3 people working; likely a mom & pop? Go with the right expectations, and you won't be disappointed.
