Northern Lights, Explained: What They Are and How to See Them

"A remote guesthouse with onsite hot springs, friendly shaggy ponies, and very dark skies, creating a restful, nature-focused base ideal for spotting and soaking under the aurora." - Stephanie Vermillion Stephanie Vermillion Stephanie Vermillion is a travel journalist and photographer covering culture and adventure for Travel + Leisure Outside, and more. By far our favorite place we stayed at during our trip around Iceland. We saw a whale on the drive up. We camped here for a night. The restaurant staff were great. The food was delicious. The blueberry dream is the best dessert I've ever had. Bathrooms and showers were clean. Loved the greenhouse pool room. All the geothermal baths were very nice. Beautiful spot. I will miss this place. Recommend to anyone in the area

We had a 2 bedroom apartment which was clean and spacious, but basic. Dinner in the restaurant was just okay but the breakfast spread had some very nice dishes. We may have just been unlucky but it was so busy, both at the main building and at the campsites. There were so many children, particularly around the pool area, so we did not even bother going there. It all felt a bit like a holiday camp, great for families I imagine, but not so great for couples. Most of the staff were lovely, but they were always so busy.

Best hotel/campsite/farm lodge experience we had in Iceland! Far away from any light pollution, we were able to see so many stars! We were even blessed to see some northern lights! The owners are very friendly. They have several hottubs, a sauna, and a pool in a greenhouse, horses, cats, a dog, and even a semi-tame arctic fox called "Lufa" (meaning Mittens in icelandic). The pool and the hottub are open 24/7, so you might even get to see all of those stars or northern light from a cosy spot in one of the hottubs! I would highly recommend spending at least one night here! Ohw, and did i mention all of the amazing dishes they serve at the restaurant? Most of them are made with locally caught or produced ingredients!

This is a very interesting hotel with very caring staff and an attentive, hands-on owner. She was very accommodating to our specific needs, where she prepared an early breakfast for our family when we needed to leave extra early. I would like to thank them for their gracious hospitality and ensuring our needs were met. The dog was very friendly as well!

Stopped for lunch and loved it. Delicious trout! Paid typical Icelandic prices but considering the remote location and quality it was reasonable. This place has a lot of character.

The country hotel is a family run holiday farm-type of hotel, consisting of apartments, camping, swimming pool and restaurant. We stayed in a 2-bedroom apartment, which was very clean with view to the valley. We loved the old natural hot-tub across the river (easy crossing by large stones) and the restaurant: trout in 4 variants and probably our best Icelandic breakfast! Staff were very kind as well.

Absolutely beautiful hotel. Stopped by for food and it is single-handedly one of the best spots I have visited if not the best. However, the fish soup they have as an appetizer is THE BEST dish I have ever eaten. An amazing balance of different flavors. Tangy, creamy, buttery, rich, salty. Absolutely remarkable. The lamb fillet was also fantastic, not a fan of mushrooms usually but the sauce used was incredible as well as the walnuts. The apple cake with ice cream was FANTASTIC. The mixed almonds with cinnamon and chocolate in a way I didn’t expect, and the cake was warm, crumbly, and soft while the ice cream was cold with a (honey?) drizzle that paired amazingly with it. The staff were also incredibly kind and courteous and amazing at their job. Not sure their names but the tall buff man and the woman with glasses were extremely welcoming. But an insane kudos goes to their chef, I’m not sure if his name was Georgie or Giorgi? But absolutely some of the best dishes I have ever had in my entire life. MUST VISIT!

We did not stay at the hotel but we visited the pool and restaurant. What a lovely place! A very unique pool in the greenhouse and a variety of hot tubs (including a natural hot spring we did not have time to see). Cute cats and dogs and a playful arctic fox made an appearance. Inside the restaurant I had delicious trout and they went above and beyond to accommodate a vegetarian meal when we were short on time and couldn't wait for the lasagna. Shout out to the grey parrot who loved to say "góðan daginn" and imitate cell phones! Definitely worth a stop if you are passing through the Westfjords.
