12 Places to See the Work of Women Architects

"In the city of Baku, Azerbaijan, a wave-like building rises from a bed of concrete. Its immobile white walls look as though they’ve been frozen mid-ripple. The abstract architecture is unlike anything else in the capital city. The Heydar Aliyev Center, which was designed by renowned architect Zaha Hadid and completed in 2012, is rumored to be one of the most expensive buildings per square foot. Its rolling, flowing design made waves within architectural, engineering, and design circles and garnered it much prestigious international recognition. Its odd design stands in stark contrast to the Soviet Modernist styles typically found throughout Baku. Inside, the building offers a tranquil environment full of white space and curved lines. The center contains a museum, gallery hall, and auditorium. Its fluid, folding walls are symbolic of its relationship with the physical and cultural landscape of the city. The entire design is meant to represent Azerbaijan’s dedication to blending its past with its future, as evidenced by the building’s slogan of, “To the future with values!” However, the center’s unconventional architecture and groundbreaking design weren’t the only things to put it on the world map. According to the Human Rights Watch, the government forcefully displaced locals to make room for the urban development initiative the center was part of. Over 250 homes were cleared while making space for the building." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Amazing works of modern architecture you need to see in real life - SilverKris

"Designed by the late Zaha Hadid, this landmark in Baku is celebrated for its fluid, organic architecture and soaring white curls that create a sculptural, almost continuous form; it stands out as one of the architect’s most famous works and a defining example of her innovative, flowing aesthetic." - Daven Wu

A must-visit in Baku! The Heydar Aliyev Center is an iconic masterpiece with stunning curved architecture and clean, modern interiors. The main museum has rotating exhibitions on culture, art, history and design, and the building itself is worth the visit. The outdoor area is spacious for photos and evening walks. Plus you can take photos at "I LOVE BAKU" Nearby you can also visit the Nobel Brothers’ Villa (Car Museum) and the Opera & Ballet Theater, both within a short ride. Easy to reach and great for first-time visitors. Plan about 1–2 hours here

The Haider Aliyev Center is a beautiful museum — truly a masterpiece of modern architecture. Inside, it’s full of fascinating art and crafts ranging from historical artifacts to contemporary works. If you’re an art lover, this place is a must-visit. There are separate sections dedicated to different art forms, and in Basement 3, you’ll find a collection of vintage cars that’s absolutely stunning. Each car is a piece of history, and you’ll love exploring them. Overall, it’s a perfect blend of culture, creativity, and elegance — a place where every corner has something to admire.

Heydar Aliyev Center is widely regarded as a must-see attraction in Baku thanks to its outstanding architectural design (by Zaha Hadid) and polished exhibition spaces. For someone visiting with interest in modern architecture, culture, or photography, it offers a very strong experience. If your time is limited, allot at least 1.5-2 hours to appreciate both its exterior form and interior exhibits.

This place needs a deep review and I dont think any review will do justice to the place for inside and outside desires. The outside designs flows as it its going with the inside theme so we'll that you get amazed. Must visit . The centre of dedicated to the amazing leader Mr Heydar Ali who played a crucial goal in the countries making. The architect did even justice to bring back the history in systematic flow , late Ms Zah Hadid made , designed this marvel. When you walk to the stairs you will feel a sense of flow that you can not comprehend . The shiny floors give an illusions of another dimension

The building is one of a kind and can not be missed visiting when you are in Baku. The entry ticket is 15 mannat and I would suggest skip buying the car museum ticket of 10 mannat. Inside its more of a Art and architecture museum which might be loved by artistic tourist but not to attractive for a common tourist. Its a symbolic place in baku and you should not miss it.

One of the most beautiful designs and interesting, varied and so unusual art exhibitions I have been too. It's definitely worth a visit... (The ticket office and entrance is still a bit confusing - maybe temporary?)

A carefully designed center that displays different styles of art. You can wander around for about two hours. It seems like a whole. This was my first visit to this place and I felt amazingly impressed. I highly recommend to everyone who comes to visit Baku. This puts their credit in visiting this wonderful place.

Beautiful building and interesting display of elements with cultural and historical significance. It’s a huge building and if you are with kids or seniors you may need the full day. The only criticism is that the building and surrounding is bot very accessible with people with mobility issues like seniors or families with strollers. For example the building entrance has very steep ramps for visitors on feet. Or stairs are very large but elevator are tiny.
