HI Halifax Heritage House

Had a great time here! The space is super clean and there is even a nice rooftop area. Rooms are big enough and have lockers to safely store your stuff. Unfortunately no curtains on the bunks, that would’ve provided a little more privacy. The shared kitchen is big enough and offers everything that you need. Staff is beyond friendly and always trying to accommodate to your wishes. Would stay here again for sure!

This was my first time staying at HI Halifax and a HI property. Location was fabulous, easy walking distance to everything downtown and the harbour. The common spaces were large and welcoming. The kitchen was very big and spacious. It is an older building but has been cared for and maintained beautifully. ||I stayed in a private room and was pleasantly surprised by the room being bigger than I expected. There was a small entrance way with hooks and full length mirror, ensuite bathroom and shower which included complimentary towels and shampoo, conditioner and body wash. There was a desk and chair, two bedside tables on either side of a very comfortable bed. Noise outside of the room was barely noticeable, the occasional footsteps or door closing. ||For the location and type of accommodation the price was reasonable. Especially when you compare the price to a hotel room in the same area. ||Overall I would highly recommend this property and look forward to staying here when I'm next in Halifax.

The perfect Hostel. Within walking distance to all pubs and attractions downtown. This place is super clean. The staff regularly go in to clean the bathrooms. The rooms and common spaces are clean aswell. I highly recommend. I've been having a great time here.

Was pleasantly surprised with this hostel! Location is great and close to the waterfront. Staff were accommodating, rooms and bathrooms were very clean, and common areas were larger than expected. Beds and lockers are pretty standard, but mattresses were comfortable and I had no safety concerns staying here as a woman.

Absolutely, an amazing place, amazing staff.I couldn't recommend going there enough. Super clean super secure very friendly people. Very helpful helped me with my luggage upon arrival. I did have some awkward moments, but they were very helpful and kind very difficult to see these days. I couldn't recommend highly enough to be perfectly honest.

Highly recommend, great value for money, very central location and clean. I stayed there for 4 nights in the women’s only dorm in August. The staff was very helpful, common areas are bright and spacious. The other travellers were respectful and friendly and I was able to get good sleep.

I stayed in a women's-only dorm here and had a good experience! First off, the location was great. I was able to get to most places I wanted by walking. The place feels secure with key access to the building, floors and rooms. Quick heads up that womens dorms are on the 3rd floor with stairs only access, so getting my bag up was an experience to say the least! This hostel has clearly been updated recently and everything looks very bright and new. The rooms and bathrooms were clean. It seemed like bathrooms were cleaned once daily, as well as the rooms. The common areas were clean and well-maintained as well. The kitchen is very spacious. The common room felt a bit hot and stuffy so I didn't spend time there. Where things could be improved: it seems as though the quiet hours were not enforced. There was one night where there was a group on the rooftop deck until probably 2am. I was also not able to get a towel as they had not laundered any in time. As well, the fridge was starting to smell from guests that had checked out and left their food. Should be gone through more frequently. Vibe wise, it's a pretty quiet hostel. There were very limited social events while I was there. It would have been nice to have a few more opportunities to meet fellow travellers, but was a nice and relaxing experience staying there. Overall I would recommend staying here for your next visit to Halifax!

No locks on bathroom doors in shared co-ed dorm, no locking options on lockers, or curtains on beds. The staff weren't particularly helpful or welcoming, and the hostel was a significant walk from anything of interest. The beds were cozy, however, and the rooms and general washrooms were clean!

I was feeling curious about hostels in this city, so I stepped into this HI location on Barrington this afternoon. The space is bright and welcoming, with colorful group agendas on the wall in the main foyer, along with a bulletin board of events and ride-shares. The kitchen off to the left was closed, but enjoyed the same natural light filtering through the front windows, along with an airy, clean feel. The woman at the front desk was checking in a visitor, so I browsed the rates and poked about. Bed prices seem on par with hostels I've stayed in throughout the world, maybe a little higher even ($30ish for a bed in a dorm, $70ish for singles). The group tour events list was quintessentially Halifax, with trips to various waterfront pubs and brewery visits. There were people milling about and I thought how lovely it would be to be in Halifax with fresh eyes. On the South end of Barrington, with loads of heritage properties, this is a lovely locale for a welcoming hostel. I'd give it a five, but I have yet to cozy up in one of the bunks!

I enjoyed my stay here. The staff were very friendly and helpful. It's in a great location too-two or so blocks from a grocery store, two or three blocks from the waterfront, plus numerous bars on the same street. Another thing I noticed was the fact that the bunks (at least on the Japan room where I stayed) do not squeak!

My sister visited Halifax in May of last year and had booked a couple nights here online. She arrived late and was met with shockingly rude and irresponsible behaviour from the guy at the front desk. He told her she couldn't check in here without a passport, which she wasn't carrying because she's Canadian, and he said she had to leave. Despite the fact that it was dark, raining, and she was sobbing, he offered no help other than saying he could "give her the number of a homeless shelter". Even if he couldn't bend the rules, which frankly he should have, the least he could have done as a decent human was to help her find another place to stay. This behaviour is disgusting, rude, irresponsible, and completely antithetical to the hostess ethos!

A more expensive, but better than average hostel. I'd stay here again.
