Hi Hat has still got it! In the metro where we often find big strip malls, ever-widening highways, bigger houses, sprawling city limits, Hi Hat Coffee serves as the perfect antidote to this affliction by serving coffee in a cozy, homey environment. Gently tucked into the West Plaza and Westwood Hills neighborhood, this place has become perfection for me and my little family.
I would say it's like grabbing a coffee from your kitchen, but it's more appropriate to say it's like hanging out in the little breakfast nook as you read the paper. This place is incredibly tiny, but everyone easily rolls with it as it adds so much charm.
Their baristas are often friendly, and the coffee is fantastic. I love their drip and iced coffees, but this is also one of the few spots where I'll opt for some sort of specialty latte on occasion. The Nutty Irishman (hazelnut and almond, I believe?) and and Bee-Hive (honey and cinnamon) are popular and fantastic, iced or hot. The coffee still shines and they're never overly sweet. I would suggest adding an extra shot of espresso for the larger size.
The patio April-October is magical. Good energy and old friends catching up.
For me, based on proximity, vibe, quality, and that special, hyper-local flare of Hi-Hat, this is my favorite coffee shop in Kansas City. Keep doing what you're doing Hi-Hat!
