Hi-Lo Hotel, Autograph Collection

My partner and I chose to stay at this property back in August as we are both hotel employees at another autograph collection hotel in a different state. The discount we got was appealing, and it was nice to see what other properties in the autograph collection looked like so we ultimately settled on this hotel. When we arrived as part of our first trip together, all we could say was "Wow." We were blown away by not just the property itself, but the convinience of location and the exceptional staff as well. The front desk agent Sam was incredible, and again, as we are both hotel employees, I would like to say that we interact with front desk staff multiple times a day as part of our job, and Sam is a standout member of the team at the Hi-Lo and from our experience in other hotels as well. The staff and service is the backbone of hotels, and gorgeous and historic hotels will become nightmares if you cant get extra towels to your room, or assistance when your blinds break. This was never an issue at Hi-Lo during our stay. The staff was incredible, and the added bonus of the hotel and location being great as well, we will continuously and enthusiastically be back. When selecting a hotel for me and my partners anniversary, we found cheaper rates at hotels in the same area. We opted to pay a little extra to spend it here at the Hi-Lo, and we couldn't be happier to spend our anniversary here, and pay that premium for the staff alone. This hotel is amazing, and I encourage everyone to book a stay here. I wish you reading to experience the difference that the Hi-Lo's staff makes, and understand why me and my partner will continuously be back. See for yourself, 10/10

Close to downtown on the edge. $40 for overnight valet which is reasonable rate. No EV charging. Room has high ceilings and industrial decor - not too tight for four. Rooms don’t open windows and no fan in bathroom. Historic building with its charms. Things like towels, soaps, filtered water are luxe.

We did not stay the full night as we were only there to dress for a formal event we were attending. However we rested and were in the room for four or five hours and go a good feel for the experience. As the building is rather old I believe, the rooms ceilings and walls have been striped down to the structural supports, though some local wood had been added to soften the effect. As someone who doesn't care for the "industrial" esthetic I can say though not huge the room was comfortable enough and seemed to be kept in good order, I did not find fault with the mattress and rested easily. The bathroom could use more lighting but it was adequate for evening makeup and very elaborate hair.

Stylish stay with thoughtful design and standout staff: I stayed at the Hi-Lo Hotel during a recent trip to Portland and was impressed by its distinctive, regionally inspired design. It truly captures the Pacific Northwest vibe in both aesthetic and atmosphere. The lobby bar is a great spot to unwind, and the staff were consistently helpful and communicative. I especially appreciated receiving text messages throughout my stay to check if I needed anything. The room itself was well-appointed, with comfortable bedding, a full-length mirror, and plenty of storage space. The mobile key feature worked smoothly, and having filtered water stations available for bottle refills was both practical and eco-friendly. Room service was convenient, and the hotel’s location—just around the corner from Portland’s legendary Huber’s Café—was a major plus. There were a few downsides that kept this from being a five-star experience. Only one elevator was in service during my visit, which caused some delays. The valet parking was not clearly marked and occasionally backed up, making arrival and departure a bit frustrating. The surrounding block can feel a little unsafe at times, which reflects more on the area than the hotel itself but still affects the overall experience. Lastly, the desk in the deluxe room was smaller than expected and not ideal for extended work sessions. Overall, I would absolutely consider staying again thanks to the design, location, and excellent staff. A few operational improvements would make this an even better experience.

Beautiful hotel in historic building with everything within walking distance. Hotel also has bikes for guest use. Rooms were beautifully designed and comfortable with expansive windows yet very quiet. Lobby was lovely with plenty of space to hang out, play games or meet friends. Staff was very friendly. I loved everything about it except the thick pillows. Would love to stay again (but will bring my own pillow)!

Great spot downtown, sitting atop the iconic Huber’s restaurant. Drew, at registration, was fabulous. Overall, the staff were friendly and helpful. ||The place itself has a cool, modern vibe. Our room was on the top floor and had high concrete ceilings.||The gym is on the basement level and had ample equipment. The lighting was too dim for my taste and other than that, we really enjoyed our stay!

We had an incredible stay at the Hi-Lo while visiting Portland. The staff at the front desk were super friendly and welcoming, which set the tone right away. When we stopped by the bar, Vivi was such a delight to chat with—she was incredibly engaging and made our afternoon even better. The only small drawback was that one of the elevators was out of service, which made wait times a bit longer. Even so, it didn’t take away from the overall experience, and we would definitely choose to stay here again on future visits.

Great for the location. Everything was within walking distance.||Staff was super nice and the hotel was clean. A bit loud but you are downtown Portland. ||Could use some TLC in the room. Stains on the furniture could be cleaned very easily and the TV needs replaced. Manager even said so on the television. lol

This hotel is really a hidden gem! I'm in that hard category of not wanting to lose points by not staying at a Marriott but I'm bored with the same old setup. Finally, an option for both! This is the first time I stayed at an Autograph Marriott Hotel and it was hands down better than the other standard Marriott hotels because of the character in the building. The entire atmosphere was relaxing and calming. This would be a great place to bring friends or your significant other because the rooms are so relaxing and downstairs is fun with tons of places to sit & nice restaurant. The staff was very helpful at giving me tons of options for local coffee shops & different places to check out downtown that are all within distance! The room was just what I was looking for, a bed nice and low to the ground with relaxing lights. It was perfect absolutely 10/10stars here! Side note, food trucks practically right across the street with some of the best Lamb Shawarma I've ever had! The only little negative aspect which is not surprising for downtown is that parking was a challenge. I eventually found the closest parking garage and had to walk a little bit to get there but all in all it was ok

I had a good experience here. The rooms were very clean and the service was great. The food in the restaurant was pretty good. I would stay here again. The only negatives can't be helped, which is that part of town was not as nice as some other parts, and the room was a little small, but that's life in the big city.

This is a great hotel in Downtown Portland, Oregon. It's located within walking distance of most landmarks downtown. There is a parking lot directly across the street if you choose to park your vehicle. Upon arrival, the representative (I believe her name was Charlotte) did an excellent job making us feel welcomed and gave us great information pertaining to the hotel and area. The rooms are very clean and comfortable, I would definitely stay here again.

I didn't stay at the hotel, but I went to the restaurant and bar next door. One of the best drinks and services around. Very good service!! It's in a more quiet part of downtown. It's nice trendy decor, remodel of an old building.

Great hotel in the heart of Portland. Watch out for the homeless at night. In the morning they leave you alone. Hotel soap is by Elemis.

Had a wonderful experience staying here for my first trip to Portland during my honeymoon! Staff were wonderfully kind and accommodating. I'd gladly stay here again.

So the only downside (for some) would be it is right on the edge of a less desirable area of town. That said, we loved it. Easy access to lots of great coffee shops, eating places and bars. Even Voo Doo donuts is only a 5 min walk. The hotel, is clean and modern and the staff were super helpful with our questions, allowing a late checkout and look looking after our bags. Room was fantastic, we were on the six floor (top) and so the ceiling was high and so the room felt even more spacious. We had a corner king and were thrilled by the room. No complaints and would easily stay again.

Wonderful hotel! Best hotel I've stayed at in a while! This is a boutique hotel that's paired with Marriott and which you find on the Marriott app for booking as well. They do give veterans/military/government employee discount!!! Management and staff were all friendly. The hotel was super clean! The toiletry products were good quality and smelled refreshing! I didn't see a fridge and I don't think I saw a microwave either. However.... I slept so well that I was told that I snored heavily... that's some good sleep! My room was 318. You overlook the food trucks and parking lot from this side. The hotel has a restaurant and a swing bench in the lobby! Location is close to voodoo donuts and several restaurants. The crowd on the streets nearby, however, at times can be unsavory.

The hotel valet wrecked my car and now are not paying for it even though they admitted fault for taking my car for a joyride. The dash cam footage was "missing" from the camera, so they either turned off the camera or removed the SD-Card from it. I didn't find out for a day and a half that they'd wrecked the car. I didn't ask for my car to be brought out as I was using Uber while in town. They decided to take it for a spin at 6am and crashed it while doing so. Now after 2 and a half months, their insurance is offering less than half of the body shop estimate and are trying to make me sign a document saying I won't sue in order to release any funds. Such a super sketchy hotel. I wish I would have stayed at a more reputable property while in town. Very bad neighborhood and very unsafe spot to stay in Portland. As you can see from other reviews, this is not the first incident with people's cars being fair game for them. Avoid this hotel. You'll thank me.

Location 3/5 Staff 5/5 Parking 1/5 Room 1/5 Overall 2/5 Location: Location as others have said is on the edge of an undesirable neighborhood. Homelessness at no fault to the hotel is everywhere with little aid provided for those in need. There is also a nightclub within the same block of the hotel and it can get very loud. That said, if you're looking to explore downtown Portland via walking (and you feel safe enough), the place is not too shabby. Staff: We barely interacted with the staff but from our little to few interactions, I have no complaints. Checked in around 11pm and the front desk guy was friendly and informative. Parking: Parking is atrocious. There is no dedicated hotel self parking. It's only valet, which is around $38 per night as of this review. There is a private parking lot across the hotel though named "SP+ Parking" that is $25 per night. Park at your own risk as with every downtown Portland private parking lot. Room: We booked a King single bed room through Expedia and by the time we arrived and checked in, was placed in a double full sized bedroom with zero notice. When I asked the staff to explain, they said the hotel overbooked the King rooms and because we booked through a 3rd party, we weren't prioritized. Dumb that they overbooked in the first place and even worst that we got no heads up prior to arrival. The room itself is basic and it doesn't look like they even use proper sheets, so it comes off super easy (see picture attached). Overall: Hotel has a great concept but execution is poor. I would not recommend.

Nice hotel and nice staff. The lobby and rooms are aesthetically pleasing and decently clean. Rooms don't have a fridge or microwave. The only negative thing about this hotel is the location. It's conveniently located downtown near a lot of popular food spots BUT this street in particular is dense with homeless people on every corner. We didn't feel safe walking a few blocks away from the hotel especially at night.

As far as comfort goes, our room had one of the best hotel beds we have ever had. We both had a great nights sleep each of the 5 nights we stayed. I'm not a fan of the "boutique" style furnishings in the room. End tables with no drawers. Only 1 usable drawer for clothing. A modern couch which is nice but not comfortable. I would have loved to have more amenities like free water bottles in our room, ice bucket and even a mini fridge for leftovers. The second drawer did have a safe in it. The modern shower is great for those that prefer showers but what about us bath people. We had to request maid service and had to request carafes of water for our room. Water for sale was like $5.00 bottle. No free breakfast. Parking was a nightmare and not included in the price. There is an unattended lot across the street that is very expensive . My feelings are that if it's a Marriott owned property it should have had more amenities. Great location if you are looking to stay downtown. We walked to pioneer square, vodoo donuts and other restaurants. Excellent walking location for the tours we took- ghost tour, donut tour, walked to Oregon sign, waterfront. Safe secure hotel that's locked. Staff was excellent!

Rudest staff and this is in one of the worst parts of town. They really could do better, but they don't. It's in a very dangerous neighborhood and I didn't feel safe even walking to the corner. Sketchy, sketchy, sketchy. The room wasn't clean and the staff was rude about it when I called down. I don't know who would want to sleep in nasty sheets with pubic hairs in them. It's like they're struggling to get housekeeping.

The worst of Marriott. This hotel plays games with honoring status upgrades. I've booked here twice and both times they claimed suite wasn't available. The first instance last year, I showed them the room was available on my phone app so they recanted on their claims of no vacancy and agreed to let me upgrade IF I paid an up charge. Then room magically became available. Absolutely contrary to the status upgrade program and undermines the very premise of the rewards system!! Been with Marriott exclusively for more than a decade, traveling weekly across the country and internationally. Needless to say, I filed a complaint. I decided to give them another shot today after calling first to be clear that I'm ambassador Elite and would only be booking if the upgrade was available. They confirmed and I booked. I reached out after booking using chat on my Marriott app and politely requested the upgrade. They offered a lower tier upgrade. I again politely asked for the suite upgrade and they then claimed it wasn't available. I then communicated that I could see it available to book snd asked why they were saying otherwise? Response came back the same- not available. Here where it gets next level shady. I pointed out that as an ambassador Elite, if I booked it on the app right now, my status requires them to make it available. Seconds later it magically disappeared.... So it was marketed available for the 1.5 hours that this process snd communication exchange occurred (app open live updating), and when they realized they had lied their way into a corner, they took it offline. Unbelievable! Stay away!!!

It was our misfortune to choose to stay at this hotel for the weekend. I don't even know where to start. Maybe the neighborhood. Location, location, location, right? Yeah, this is a disgusting and dangerous location. This hotel belongs there though, it fits right in. The staff was surly and curt. What stands out the most though, is the smell. The rooms weren't cleaned very well and it shows, well, smells. There's this indescribable smell in the room that just seems like it's there to let you know bad things happen here. I wouldn't stay there again if they paid me. Find anywhere else to stay.

Arriving late from the East Coast, ready to grab a bite then collapse into bed, Hi-Lo created the perfect welcome encounter to kick off the stay right. Add to that a hip vibe in the lobby and room, and I felt cooler havIng stayed here. It may just be a Portland thing, but I seem to spend 10 minutes just figuring out the light switches. With that behind me, it's on to bigger adventures: what's outside my window. This can make or break a trip. Fortunately it was "neutral". That means I'm not looking at Diamond Head but also not looking at a dumpster (or dumpster fire), or nobody's looking back at me... So score one for getting to see a historic neon sign throughout the night. Once I figured out where that trendy filtered water machine was, it's go-time. That means venturing out for a quick pre-coma meal. The location feels like it's on the edge of pre-reclaimed post-warehouse empty storefront district, but otherwise feels safe enough, with only one guy asking for money on my walk to dinner. The rain helped with this maybe but it is winter in Portland. The staff was friendly and helpful, offering some nice bonus Bonvoy credits/points for status, and I felt valued throughout the stay. Upon leaving the next morning at 7am, I was surprised when the bellman addressed me by name and helped me into the rideshare. Whatever magical algorithm they have going for that, works! Breakfast was also nice: gingerbread pancakes with cranberries/nuts was original. It wasn't even ridiculously expensive. I'll return when back in town.

Deadly shooting at this hotel. Everything started off great here but then our first night went more and more downhill. The first night there was an actual shooting not even 10 steps away from the hotel. We heard the gunshots from our hotel room. We frantically were searching the news to see if anything had been reported yet or the citizen app. We checked in the morning and someone was shot 4 times and died. The hotel never alerted us about any of this or checked in with anyone. I know they can't predict that but a check in would have been appreciated. Then, the next night there were several cars doing donuts right below our room for about 5 hours. We should have known right away that when the hotel provides ear plugs in every room that they already know about all of this commotion. I would never stay here again. We felt super unsafe the whole time. The rest of the nights there were people yelling and screaming everywhere and it just made us feel uneasy. Please consider another hotel when staying in Portland.

Beautifully decorated hotel with very comfy beds. The restaurant/bar by the lobby had great atmosphere and the food and the service were amazing! Minus one star was the sketchy neighborhood. I had a view of crazy homeless and drug dealers from my room. Portland needs to step up, or they are ruining the wonderful city.

It was a pretty hard review. The hotel itself is very nice, the bathroom especially is very nicely done with nice finishings and very clean. However the room itself is pretty small, and weirdly laid out. You kind of walk right into the closet and then the bed is just on your right. I guess it's fine for just an overnight stay. What was really hard to get over was a location, we actually didn't know where we were going to stay the first night we came to Portland. We booked online, about an hour before we got to go hotel. Right outside the hotel it is a populated area with homeless people. The minute you walk outside the hotel, everyone is walking up to you and asking you for money/food. Well this is not abnormal, it definitely made us not want to explore the area very much and we spent most of the time just staying in the hotel. We actually ended up ordering food in, because everywhere you went outside there was a lot of tents set up everywhere. Again this is not really much that the hotel can control, but I think just a combination of The location and lack of services afforded right now [during Covid] it's a little hard to give it much more of a rating. Staff was friendly enough.

Love this property. This is my go-to location when I'm up in Portland. The staff are all great. The rooms are chic and cool. The location is right across the street from a block of food trucks/stalls. The breakfast is good. Downtown is all walking distance. They have valet but there's also a paid lot directly across the street which is just as easy.

Sad to say this but BUYER BEWARE. At a minimum people with pets, or are sensitive to noise in any way and/or with PTSD should avoid this hotel. We stayed here two years ago and it felt like a completely different experience from our current stay. We will be packing up early and leaving. We tried to tough it out as long as we could. Sadly, the area this hotel is located in has deteriorated in an incredibly bad way. This hotel is "pet friendly" however once you step foot out of the hotel you'll find it's decidedly NOT a pet friendly area which kind of negates it. From broken glass all over, used condoms and trash all over the place, pools of gross standing water lining all the curbs full of gross liquids mixing with the water (the area seems to really be lacking drains so there is nowhere for things to go when they wash off areas of the sidewalks or when it rains which it does constantly), and what feels like the worst is land mines of human and pet feces which are hard to avoid. Unfortunately my husband stepped in some human feces while trying to walk our dogs. The homeless population will just be defecating right there on the street right in daylight. Speaking of the homeless population it doesn't feel like a safe area at night especially, people stand twitching and screaming on the curb outside. Unfortunately you won't sleep well unless you sleep like a rock or your drunk as hell. Apparently people like drag racing in the streets outside the hotel especially in the late hours into the early morning. We were told that they also like doing doughnuts in the parking lot and in the intersection. They go around and around for hours, the vibrations of their modified mufflers shaking the glass and some of them sweeten the deal with booming bass that you can feel all the way down to your stomach. They wake me up even through ear plugs in both my ears. I have PTSD so this is making it so much worse for me but my husband doesn't and it's even made him jump up out of a dead sleep. There is a parking lot across the street where you can self-park but it's in my opinion not safe. I've watched what seemed like a man trying to break into a vehicle there, I tried to call the police to report it but I was on hold so long he managed to do whatever he was doing and walk away before the line was finally picked up. They have valet which is in a secured parking lot so at least there is that. The valet is friendly generally so that's nice. The reason I gave this hotel anything but 1 stars is due to Tommy. I'm not sure if he solely works in the restaurant because he does a little of everything and he makes sure to introduce himself when you check-in and says hi whenever he sees you. He's extremely good at his job and his performance is above and beyond. I guarantee you someone should give this person a raise. He is what has kept us here thus far. They also have a kind front desk person. It's not their fault what is taking place but the Marriott chain needs to take more notice of what's happening around their hotels and try to work with the city. You don't expect to pay this much money for such an unsafe, unsanitary and unrestful environment.

Location is right next to boarded up buildings and homeless encampments. Broken bottles/glass next to the front door wasn't cleaned up the two days we were there. It's as if Portland has given up on this part of the town. Front desk person, Colette, was very helpful, professional and friendly. Interior is a bit bizarre and not very comfortable. Beds are super low to the ground as was the small couch in our room. Huge windows that don't open at all were filthy, so really didn't have a view from our sixth floor (top floor) room. AC didn't work well, but when we'd call to the front desk she could restart it and it would work for a while.

The Hi-Lo is a part of Marriott's Autograph Collection. This one is a category 8 and a recent addition to downtown Portland. Clean, expansive and well-decorated lobby space. Location: Well-located downtown a few blocks from Pioneer Courthouse Square and the Portland Saturday Market. Two blocks from the MAX line. Rooms: This review is for a corner king suite. What I loved most were the floors. There's a rug under the bed, but otherwise the floors were wood and tile and it made things feel so clean. The suite had a loveseat, two small coffee tables and a corner chair. A large linear desk lined one side of the windows, and there was a 60" tv in the corner. One downside of this amazing room are the single-pane windows, and there was loads of them. Great for natural light and there are blackout curtains, but as the hotel only has 6 floors, city noise does permeate those single-pane windows. If you're a light sleeper, you may want to request an inner facing room, bring ear plugs, and install a white noise app. Bathroom: Expansive with a walk-in shower inclusive of a wand and rain shower head. Amazing Kohler bathtub with jets. Plenty of counter space for all your toiletries. Staff and service: Amazing. Doors are opened for you, and you get greeted with a smile and a great attitude. I'm going to call out Matt specifically here. I stayed 8 nights, and each time I saw him, he was as friendly and upbeat as the last. Overall: I'd stay again. I do wish they had done something to acknowledge the lack of AC on one of the nights were it was 100 degrees during the day. It was fixed the next day, but I was left to endure a night with no AC in an east facing room. In-house restaurant and gym are available to you.

It was my first time staying here. Rooms are cute, enough space for my bags & heated bathroom floor. The staff is pretty nice & let us check in a little early. I only had one complaint. No refrigerator in the room. It seems like a couple of the bartenders are somewhat rude. Last night a women with long hair was our bartender. We ordered old fashions. When I asked her a question about the espresso machine she said she couldn't hear me & that she didn't know the what brand it was (even though it had the name of it on the machine) maybe she is hard of hearing? I couldn't see that far. But she seemed annoyed? Idk. We left & didn't feel like having another drink. The night before was a male bartender. Super quiet & didn't talk much. Not overall friendly but kept to himself. I guess I'm just used to bartenders that have a little conversation with guests. Not a super big problem. I did like the esthetics of the hotel. Really cute & they gave us a free bottle of wine. So that was cool!

Staff here is incredibly nice! Lobby manager was really informative and gave us a lot of great suggestions on bars and restraunts and fun stuff to do in the area. A+

SO impressed with this hotel. We were greeted by Preston who was phenomenal on the phone and in person. He was so helpful throughout our entire stay. Every staff member at this hotel was very friendly, polite and attentive. I have to shout out house keeping and a young man (I'm sorry! I didn't catch his name) for the unbelievable service and hospitality here. I plan on letting my travel agent know how fond I am of this place so they can have many others enjoy the same experience as we did. Thank you, Hi-Lo!

To be fair, they are still coming out of the post-pandemic with regards to fully being staffed etc. the restaurant, Craft, was basically non-existent- forget breakfast. Go somewhere else. The rooms are very clean- the shower is divine, with ample hot water plus the option of a rain shower, which is lovely. The view was of the dirty backside of another building. Would have been nice to have been upgraded to a view room since it was a Sunday night and the hotel seemed empty. The area is depressed-homeless are everywhere and just a general feeling of drab and a dark,heavy vibe. I didn't feel comfortable walking by myself during the day on that part of Portland. But, great amenities (coffee in room, Kai bath products), although I couldn't find any pillow menu and could have used a different choice! These are first-world problems though.

Recently spent Christmas at the Hi-Lo. Our overall judgment: it's a nice hotel and conveniently located. But for a Marriott hotel (we are Marriott members), it lacks many of the perks and smaller details that we've come to expect. In terms of the positives, one of the best aspects of this hotel is the location. It's on SW Harvey Milk (not Stark), which is a few blocks from Old Town, The Pearl District, Pioneer Square, and pretty much everything else in the city. It's also a four minute walk from the Max. Another positive is the aesthetic. It feels like a mix of Oregon Old and New, and that comes through well in the design. In terms of the in-between, service was fairly good. We especially appreciated the doorman, who wS always friendly and helpful. The staff at the front desk was also good. However, there was an issue with our room (no heated floors). After inspecting the issue, and kind of shrugging their shoulders about it, they provided us another room. Unfortunately, that room had the exact same issue. Considering it's cold at this time of year and it was one of the reasons we chose the Hi-Lo (they advertise that heated floors are in every room), we were disappointed. However, we didn't want to move rooms again. What was bothersome was that there was no follow up and little explanation. Another of the in-between or "lows," was the lack of veggie options in Craft PDX. However, there were options, so that's a positive. Overall, we'd stay here again. It's a good hotel. However, for a Marriott hotel, it's a bit lacking.

Hi-Lo Hotel is a brand new hotel by the Marriott group (literally opened last week!) During my PNW trip I wanted to find somewhere that would be close to downtown and all Portland has to offer - Hi-lo fit that bill! From when you pull up to valet to the moment you walk into the lobby - the aesthetic is is gorgeous and done to perfection!! They have spent a lot of time with the design of this place and it looks amazing! The lobby is filled with white marble floors, modernized yet still provides that old building feel to it (almost as if you walked into a speakeasy!) and not to mention there's a swing in the lobby!! There's also a Lo-bar and Mexican restaurant within the hotel. They both look amazing and will most likely be found there this week :) The rooms are beautiful - not spacious but definitely good amount of space. Large bathrooms and a rain shower! Great service so far from staff. Only downside would be valet parking is $43 a night!! Yeah downer! But that's the usual price to park around here. There's off site parking but I heard it is a walk. Highly recommend to the wanderers out there.

No Resort Fees! This is a rare thing to find now a days. What I loved most was how Eco Friendly this hotel is by swapping out the individual plastic shampoo bottles that fill our landfills, and replaced it with soap dispensers in the bathrooms. Some of you may not like this, but this will be the future. They also provide a glass pitcher for the water and ice refill station instead of having a vending machine filled with plastic bottles (The water actually tastes clean! See photo). The location is close to all the main attractions and if you need to go further from town, the Streetcar and Light Rail is within walking distance (Public transportation system is highly recommended). I didn't even take an Uber the whole 4 days I was there. The hotel is also situated conveniently between three food pods that offer a variety of tasty meals. The Problem: This hotel is a historic landmark and I'm guessing they couldn't do much with the sound proofing? The front desk bumped my room up to the 6th floor (highest level) and that may have helped with some noise but since my room faced the parking lot across from the main entrance, and sat between two strip clubs, it was quite noisy at night, and worse on Friday night when people are out partying. My room had a connecting door to the next room and I could hear muffled conversations, toilets flushing, phone ringing, etc., so I was glad I didn't have rowdy neighbors throughout my stay. This obviously would have been an issue if there was a group of party goers next door. The room doors don't shut easily from the outside. You have to force it shut by pulling the door forcefully, so throughout the morning, I'm awaken by the slamming of doors from all our neighbors. They need to fix this issue. If you're a light sleeper and a good nights rest is important to you, you may want to check out other hotels or ask for a room not facing the parking lot (not sure if the other side of the hotel has this issue). The staff was was incredibly friendly and helpful, giving suggestions of places to eat, or directions if needed, and always opening the door for us when we entered or exited the property. After a certain time at night, they do keep the front doors locked for safety reasons, and you'll need to swipe your room key to enter the property. This hotel truly felt like a luxury hotel with all the renovation they did on the interior, but I had to knock a star off for the noise.

Definitely worth staying here in this historic buildings. Newly done and no problems if "unfinished quirks." Just beautiful details throughout from reclaimed wood walls to the bathroom hardware & toiletries. Apparently the first concrete poured building in town- so they reveal all the cement columns between all modern fine finishes down the halls. High veiling large bright rooms. Absolutely gorgeous, a must stay. Restaurant downstairs too. Lovely staff and the smell is Fresh!

We LOVED our stay at the Hi-Lo during our first visit to Portland and the end of last month! We were upgraded to a corner view hotel room, which made all the difference in the world for our family of 3. This was our first family vacation in a hotel room and it hadn't occurred to me that we would be in the room more frequently given we are traveling with a 1 year old with bedtime needs and a schedule. Thank God and they hotel manager for this fabulous room with a view! It was like having a mini apartment for the week we were there! The staff was excellent and so accommodating. The room has heated floors - excellent addition given the cold weather in the area - and the restaurant/bar downstairs was a great place to hang for a beat after a long day of sightseeing and then retiring to our room. The room had a smart TV so we were able to log in and watch Netflix as needed. Attached to the hotel is Portland's oldest restaurant - Huber's - which made for an exciting find! It was on our list of places to stop by and had no idea it would be just below us! Their Spanish Coffee is legendary! I will never, ever stay anywhere else when traveling to Portland. I hope they'll have my corner room available on the next trip. It was prefect and I'm so glad I found the Hi-Lo!

Fantastic hotel! Very easy to park and have the valet take care of your car. Check in was a breeze. Everyone was so nice and tentative. The lobby/lounge area was very nice, upscale modern decor. Didn't get a chance to try the bar or the restaurant but I liked the convenience of it being there. No problems with the elevators. The room was great. Bed was comfortable. The bathroom was stocked with all of the necessary items. The only thing I would have liked was a tub. But the rain shower was nice too. There was t a view out the window, just brick which I didn't mind. The lighting was great ambiance, and the tv was easy to set up our Netflix account. The location of the place was excellent-just a few blocks from all of the things we visited. Will stay here again.

I'm a lifelong Starwood member who has been absorbed into Marriott's new Bonvoy program. And while still a little leery, I have to say my first Marriott experience (as part of the program) was great. A recent trip unexpectedly went sideways, and I found myself in Portland without a plan. That was when I put Bonvoy to the test. I opened the app, found an interesting place to stay, and booked online. And from the moment we arrived at Hi-Lo, our experience brightened. The service was rock solid. Pleasant, welcoming, and very attentive. From valet to the front desk and room service, we couldn't have asked for better. Hi-Lo is a Marriott Autograph Collection property. The brand name may suggest a bougie vibe, and that wouldn't be entirely inaccurate. But this isn't a lux hotel in the same way as a flagship Marriott property. This brand is about creating contemporary spaces from older buildings and bringing in local character and style--a popular trend in hospitality right now. Each Autograph property is unique and specific to its location. And while comfortable and upscale, this isn't a Four Seasons. Of course, it isn't trying to be. And that's that's fine, because they do what they do, well. The rooms are comfortable and well appointed with most of the usual amenities. The service is friendly and responsive, and the quality of the experience is solid. The property is also nicely situated and close by to all of Portland's downtown attractions including the riverfront, Saturday market, Pioneer Coutrthouse square, Pearl District, and many dining options. All in all, a fine place to stay. A bit sparse--I suspect owing to the decor and contemporary feel. But they have everything most people need. Hi-Lo is a great choice on any visit to the Rose City.

Ugh....usually when I'm not on business, I like to break free from the typical Courtyards and explore the other 28 brands that Marriott has to offer. Unfortunately, this stay has let me questioning how and why the Hi-Lo is considered a freaking Autograph Collection. Pro's: + Location- The Hi-Lo is a 2 minute walk from the Max's Red Line, within a stones throw away from 2 of the food truck pods, ~ 4 minute walk to the Pioneer Square area, and if gentlemen's clubs are your thing, there are two different options right across the street. + Room sizes- Now this will vary based on what you book; however, the double city view has tons of room + Outlets with USB ports + Local touches in the design - reclaimed wood used for accent wall +/- a Instagramable lobby area with a swing bench if that's your thing -Shower- yeah for rain head showers ! No worrying about knocking your head or having to duck to get clean. Water pressure and temperature held for duration of shower. Con's: - Noise: Paper thin walls, noise from plumbing, and the street noise is ridiculous as a result of the nature of the area (people who have really enjoyed their night out looking to curb their munchies at the food carts, and then the damn garbage trucks/maintenance trucks that service the food carts). I was provided with a pretty standard canned response from the hotel in regards to my complaint; however, a proactive option would be to spend money to add in sound proofing, including better windows: "We are actively working with the city to ensure the necessary guidelines and noise ordinance are in place to prevent mishaps like this from occurring in the future". - Design/Decor: It's cold (the floor can get freaking cold due to the tile) and cheap. It's basically an AC hotel and Aloft merged into one. - Bed- low to the ground and hard as hell. -Soap/Shampoo/Conditioner dispensers- Not a fan. Hands down one of my worst stays. After barely getting any sleep, I was excited to freaking check out. My biggest regret was not making the effort to checkout early and switch hotels.

First time at this hotel and it's super nice! Got the parking package and it's super convenient. The hotel lobby looks beautiful! Love the floors. The room looks and feels great too! Clean and comfy. I love the floors in the room as well and the bathroom is so nice :) will definitely come back next time. Robert, the check-in staff person was great too!

Whatever you do, do not stay at this hotel. Our check-in time was 3pm, yet our room wasn't ready until 5pm. We got valet parking, and when my partner's car was returned to us, the glove box had been rifled through, and some of our belongings had been stolen (including the keys to my vehicle, which was stolen from the address found in the glove box within the same 24 hours and found to be totaled upon recovery). There were no broken windows on either vehicle, precluding the possibility of a physical break-in. A police investigation found that my boyfriend's car was the only vehicle that was not properly logged that night, and the hotel had no good explanation. The police have since informed us of criminal activity by valets in the area. It appears that they are likely being paid by someone to look the other way while valeted vehicles are being burglarized.

Updated for 2019: This is a great property and really is worth the stay. It is totally unique, and I love the vibe with gifts by local merchants. If you travel a lot for work like I do, someplace different like the Hi-Lo shakes it up a bit. While yes, the location is still on the edge, it seems like it is getting better. Plus, got upgraded to a great room - 315 - this time on the corner. Very spacious, and I am totally using the reading nook and jets in the bath. Do bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper. It wasn't too noisy, but I did hear a train off in the distance once. ********** This hotel was a refreshing surprise in a sea of endless business travel. So, I travel a LOT for work, and have Platinum status with several chains. I try to focus on just a few chains so I can build up the points for family getaways. While that's great, it does often mean I fly the same airlines, stay in the same hotel as, eat the same food etc. It gets really boring. I picked the Hi-Lo on a whim since I felt like I couldn't stand the "same old thing." I'm very glad I did. Here's the rundown: Positive: 1) Style is cool as heck... yes, hipster vibe. Lobby, bar and restaurant were cool. The room is eco-chic. While my husband called this "modern penitentiary" when he saw it on FaceTime, I loved it. It's not eclectic, and it totally works! 2) Staff is super accommodating and very friendly. Props to Matt, the valet/bellman, for great service and for finding my phone, calling and running it up to me when I hadn't even noticed it was missing. 3) I'm allergic to down, and feather free rooms usually mean lumpy pillows and thin blankets and many, MANY high line hotels. Nice, fluffy pillows, great warm comforter - uber comfy. 4) yes, the mattress is on the firm side as it's on a platform - no box springs. It worked well as there was no ginormous divot like many hotel beds have, but it still had a good amount of give and was comfy. Really cute hotel in a great location next to the river, fantastic restaurants and shops. Simple and modern aesthetic that left us feeling light and free as we enjoyed our 12th anniversary adventure. There is an awesome bar to the left of the lobby that is absolutely worth visiting a time or two.

Lovely boutique hotel conveniently located in downtown Portland. Walking distance to nearly anything in the city center, and just a 20 minute drive from the airport. The lobby is gorgeous, with white marble floors, gilded vintage details, and a crisp minimalist vibe. Attached bar, if you do not feel like venturing out. Very modern and stylish, yet still classic. Upon arriving I was warmly greeted. All the staff here that I encountered during my stay-doormen, reception, housekeeping-were all genuinely friendly and helpful. I stayed in a Deluxe King room, which was very comfortable. Large bathroom with waterfall shower, and lots of counter space. The bed was a little on the harder side, but the linens were premium and quite soft. Acceptable thread count. The wall mounted flat screen TV (with Roku!) was enjoyable to watch in bed, or from the comfortable tweed sectional couch. Two bottles of complimentary electrolyte water per day and heated floors were a nice touch. I also liked the toiletries, which smelled great and are made with nice ingredients. I dock a star because the walls are very thin, and there was quite a bit of noise during the day and throughout the night. Otherwise, a lovely experience.

Really cute hotel. I stayed here because it is a part of the Marriott Bonvoy family. I was pleasantly surprised. It is really cute and clean! The location is great too - really close walking distance to a lot of great bars and restaurants.

This hotel has a century modern design feel to it with mixture of wood walls and concrete beams. Minimalist closet space. Proximity to lots of food and shopping. 15 min drive from PDX. Breakfast and dinner available at Craft PDX inside the hotel. Drinks weren't so good. Let's just say the limes make the difference in a margarita. Staff was welcoming and friendly. No on site parking so you have to park in the parking lot across the street which is not bad unless its a busy day/weekend. The area isn't the cleanest or nicest but it is what you would expect in any city downtown area. Overall enjoyed my stay!

Ok hotel but wouldn't pay $200 a night. 2 queen room was small and beds were fulls not queens. Maybe it was just the room we got but we got a city view room that looked at parking & no view of downtown. Website says free parking but that's street parking from 7pm-7am. Okay area, short walk to restaurants and VooDoo doughnuts. Hotel had room key entry to the front door which felt safe.

4.5 for hotel ckeaninebess and friendly staff. Great location to food stalls, but don't like not having its own parking lot. We have to pay $25/day at a lot across the street or fight for side street after hours for free space. I don't care for the downtown vibe; it's dirty and feels unsafe.

Great little boutique hotel in downtown portland. It looks like an older building remodeled into something new and trendy. Check in process could have been more smooth as my room wasn't ready well after the suggested check in time and the bar downstairs wasn't open for late hours of the night. Otherwise, lobby/bar area was great to hang out at and our room was fantastic. Being downtown portland is pretty small, you're walking distance to almost everything in downtown.

When Portland had a massive snowstorm back in February, one of my elder family members living alone in Portland needed a place to stay for a few nights, as his house lost electricity. We found him a room at Hi-Lo, and I have to say that the staff was amazing. Despite the super-intense conditions, they went out of their way to help him and welcome him as a guest. We had food delivered for him a few different times and they made sure that it got to his room and that he had water and any needed supplies. It was a hard situation and the staff and management at Hi-Lo made a real difference. Much gratitude and appreciation!

Room: Clean and comfortable! We didn't have any problems with noise, perhaps because the room did not face the street (commonly mentioned in other reviews), but the walls were thin. If you're a light sleeper, I recommend piping white noise through the room's bluetooth speaker. Staff: Customer service was EXCELLENT. They've got a really nice employees, both the front desk and cleaning staff. Location: Walking to great food and shopping is easy. Driving to and from the airport is straightforward as well. Parking: Avoid the crazy valet fee at the hotel and go for one of the nearby parking options. We used Central Plaza - Lot #11, about 1.5 blocks away and there was always room to park. Their overnight parking fees are MUCH cheaper than the valet fee (noting that the parking staff don't always calculate your total correctly). Cons: Yes, the hotel is located near a few strip clubs. However, that's not why you'll see a significant number of "seedy" folks around town. Homelessness is a major concern for the city of Portland and witnessing the problem is essentially unavoidable if you're walking around downtown. Be respectful and educate yourself. Consider giving money or a hot meal. I was really excited about staying at this hotel with my husband as a wedding gift from a friend.....to cut to the chase, the pillow on my bed had been previously urinated on. I didn't realize it until the middle of the night when I flipped over in my sleep and buried my face in the pillow that had been behind me and was woken up by the most disgustingly strong rancid urine smell. It was around 5:30 am so I just decided to get up because I didn't want to sleep in the bed anymore. When we reported this to the two gentlemen at the front desk upon checking out, they laughed and said something like "OMG how WEIRD! We're sorry, that's weird! Well, we will send your bill to your email. Looks like you ate at the restaurant- we will send your receipt there too!" I find it REALLY bizarre and disappointing that a "luxury" hotel can be that okay with accepting money from a guest who expected a peaceful night, but ended up with their face buried in someone else's urine instead...and paying for the experience. I feel horrible that my friend paid for this and don't have the heart to tell her what happened. I won't be returning and I won't be recommending it. Mistakes do happen, but the staff doesn't understand what high quality customer service looks like.
