Yelp
Pretty sure nowadays, the word "hostel" brings it with a fear of unknown, possibly crappy conditions where you would grasp your belongings, much less get any type of sleep. NOT this place. I was quite pleased with the conditions, OF EVERYTHING. Granted, this was the very first hotel I've ever stayed in so EVERYTHING else will be compared to HI Hostel New Orleans!!! Location, pretty much at the center of it all, across the street from the French Quarter, walking distance to everything, including the trolleys. Starting off, the building upon entry was very classy and clean. It was very inviting which almost made you forget the inscription on the building that says hostel which you would mistake for hotel. We walked in hours before our actual check in, and the courteous and friendly staff were more than welcome to hold our bags while we walked around town. The common room was clean and laid back, all the furniture very comfortable with and antique style, although almost with a brand new feel. A keycard is provided to provide access to the building (after hours) so security is quite nice in this a aspect. The keycard also provided access to the rooms, your private locker, the laundry rooms, and kitchen, secured at all times. Again this being my first time in a hostel, my thoughts of scary and dark spaces and small rooms with ratty conditions were completely erased with clean bedrooms areas (I stayed in a room of 6), fluffy white pillows and blankets, and a very comfortable bed, designed almost to not look like bunk beds but merely stylishly stacked beds against the wall equipped with a privacy curtain. The room had long sitting benches, almost that of a locker room, and wall hooks. Now the bathroom, yes, I had THOSE thoughts prior to staying here. This place completely shattered the thoughts I had of hostels, to include the bathroom which was pleasantly clean at anytime I used the facilities. The SINGLE person bathroom included the standard toilet (again, clean at every time I used it), shower, sink, mirror, blow dryer, with bath floor towels for each use, and a shampoo/soap dispenser. I think I only ran into the no TP issue just once during my entire stay. The kitchen common area was also super clean and provided 24 hour coffee and water dispensers. I didn't use the kitchen too often but I did see condiments were provided, a BREAKFAST was included with any overnight stay (not sure what items) but I'd like to think close to a continental bfast, a numerous amount of seating areas (tall bar stools, tall table, short table, booth style and sofa couch areas), and lastly a rather sizeable "chill room" area adjacent to the kitchen complete with TV and comfy seating arrangements, i think a few bean bag chairs and one of those round wicker saucer things with a cushion inside. HI hostel NOLA also provided a board of activities inside and outside, wi-fi and and abundance of books and games. They even went the extra mile and provided complementary "mardi gras survival kits" for guests!!!! This place in my mind was ridiculous=)!! Definitely worth the stay, definitely worth the money, and I'll be comparing all my hostel stays to this place. I'll definitely also be looking at all their other properties staying elsewhere, and if and when I'm back in NOLA....staying here for sure.
