"The roots of Appalachian food come from the people who lived in the mountains, from Native Americans and enslaved people of African descent to Scotch Irish and Italian immigrants, " says chef Travis Milton. "All of that culminates in Appalachian food. Throw in poverty and subsistence, which forces creativity, you get a crazy different cuisine." Not sure I understand the "poverty and subsistence" influence at Milton's newest restaurant The Hickory at Nicewonder Farms and Vineyards in Bristol. But if those qualities are part of what inspired the heavenly cuisine we enjoyed to start the New Year, I'll take it! To be fair, there are some truly outstanding restaurants in Southwest Virginia, as well as some really mediocre ones, as there are anywhere. But few exceed expectations in almost every category of what people look for in a dining experience. To start, our server Dallas was wonderful--so kind, polished and professional. Add to that the simple unpretentious elegance of the venue. Ambiance, Convenience, Affordability, Service, Decor, Cleanliness, and oh yeah, the food! Artfully and meticulously presented, fresh and flavorful beyond words, what more do you need? The only downside (and I only say this because some people might consider this a downside) and that is the menu could be seen as somewhat "limited". "Specialized" would be a better description. I honestly felt as if the dishes we ordered (Quinoa bowl with brussel sprouts for me; smash burger and stewed apples for my husband) were prepared especially for us! If you need more entrees, bigger portions or other options, go to a diner. The Hickory made our New Year's Day as special as it gets!
