If want to take a look at life and homestead centuries back, you need to visit the Hickory Ridge History Museum in Boone NC. We had an excellent tour guide who shared a lot of knowledge and stories with us. It is amazing to see the homes and simplicity.

The docent was a Prof at App State and was awesome. Didn't get his name. The buildings are all original. Amazing place. A must see.

Our family of six really loved this little place. Often times, historical villages are made great by their interpreters, and this one was no exception. I wish we’d gotten his name, but he is a recent grad of Appalachian State is now working on his graduate degree in Public History and his passion is clear. I just love it when people find their vocations and live them. This guy is so knowledgeable. I love history and I happen to teach college, and I learned quite a bit from his tour. I highly recommend making a visit here, and then maybe pop over to another local place, maybe Blowing Rock, for a snack or lunch, and hike some trails. Makes for a great day.

It was a deception. The cabins are outdoors. All closed. Place was kind of abandoned. Maybe it's the time of the year (march). It would be nice a note on Google saying when it's open and ready to get visitors

Was a part of the Daniel Boone Day this year and cooked in Tatum Cabin during the day. Beautiful scenery, perfect weather and sweet people to volunteer with.

Very informative tour ($5-45mins) led by a guide dressed in revolutionary attire. We visited in the off season so no actors in each cabin, but the same guide the entire tour. Tours are started on the hour.

Show flooded out ticket box office stated they could refund price of tickets due to flooding of the theater and we had not received any of the other amenities given to VIP ticket holders. Ticket Box took my information and others so they could send the refund to us. I have tried to contact them but no one has returned my calls or email. Did get refunded with a letter explaining delay. Refund came within time i was told. Very censer letter.

Horn of the West play is a must-see in Boone. Great live history story about the significance of early American history. Lots of action and awesome singing. Kids will also love it! Very patriotic performance by professional actors! Make sure you get the chair pads. Play runs Very long bot worth it!

Yelp
Nice small historic place to visit. Only $8 for adults. Pretty cool to see what you've only read about in history books. Interesting and Amazing to see how life was all that long ago. And they even do reenactments at different times of the year. Our teen enjoyed it.

Yelp
Located on the grounds of Horn in the West, we had a bit of time before the show began that we walked thru this Living History Museum. Reanactors and historians talk about everyday life from the mid 1700s to the early 1900s. There are demonstrations on weaving, blacksmithing, candlestick making, and smokehouse cooking, on site. Things were just winding down for the day as we walked thru so we missed all of that, but did get a bit of history lesson in how the phrase: "good night, sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite" came about as we went in one log home and listened to a docent tell the origins of this phrase. The general area and buildings seemed a bit run down. Overall a nice little detour, as we walked to the Horn of the West.

Yelp
A great site tucked into the main drag of Boone. They have really worked hard to preserve authentic homesites from the 1700 and 1800s. The building are full if authentic materials to show you what life was like for people living in the mountains during those eras as well. Our tour guide was VERY knowledgeable. There was not a single question that we had that she wasn't able to answer with detail. In addition, she was extremely personable. These two things made our tour so much fun. We definitely learned a lot of things from out tour. Also, because it is a living history museum you are allowed to touch parts of the exhibit (after asking for permission of course). My son got to weave and examine how to make bullets! Overall, I would highly recommend this tour especially if you enjoy history. The price can't be beat either. $5 for adults $3 for kids. Just know that the museum is currently only open April-November (as of April 2018).
