Just got my dream haircut at Hifi Hair. Jonny blew me away - so great at working with the hair and figuring out how to marry what you want with what your hair wants. Best haircut I’ve had in 33 years. Brilliant. Book the appointment - you won’t be disappointed!!

If you are lucky enough to get an appointment here, snag it! This place is so much fun, and the atmosphere is magical for an audiophile. I had one of the best haircut and colors that I have ever had in my life, and Johnny had great suggestions on how to style my hair and even how he cut it. I will definitely be back and even make a special trip to get my hair done here again.

I’ve been getting my hair done by Jon for almost 10 years now, and if you’re looking for someone who’s talented, kind, hardworking and fun to be around, Jon’s your guy. It’s always a good time, with good music, and good hair at Hifi! I can’t recommend enough!

The reviews are true, this place is awesome! Chill vibe, relaxing, good tunes playing, and the decor is off the charts. You can tell how much work, love and passion exists inside of this salon (and record store) I called right as they opened and John scheduled me his last appointment for the day. He had been there for 9 hours before my appointment and took his time to give me a super sick haircut. He didn't rush it, he gave me what I had asked for and customized the cut to make it perfect for my hairs needs. *I have a ton of super curly thick hair so if you're looking for a place you can trust with your curls look no further* I'm a stylist myself so I haven't been into a new salon or gotten a cut from someone I didn't work with or already know In 12 years. I'm so happy with my new look and it feels amazing, will definitely be back next time! Thanks HiFi you made my day!

Friendly, skillful and SUCH A GENEROUS HEART! Thank you, Johnny for helping my friend in her transition! She feels SO GOOD ABOUT HERSELF! Your kindness brought so much light and love!

Ok, if you want to go to the raddest salon and record store in the world, go here. John is one of the best humans I've ever met. He is fun to talk to, and you never know who you'll see stroll into the shop while you're there. Make sure to check out the bathroom! It's so cool!

I just moved to the area and was looking for a new hair dresser. This salon was such a wonderful experience! They put lots of care into my hair and I left with one of the best styles I've ever gotten! I highly recommend them.

My boyfriend and I both needed haircuts, so I called and asked if they had any open appointments next to each other. They offered me a choice of back-to-back appointments with the same stylist, or simultaneous appointments with different stylists. He and I both really appreciate that they were able to accommodate my special request! We both got our hair cut by Johnny. He was great. I think he could tell right away that I was nervous to get bangs and he calmed me down. He looked at pictures with me and talked it over. I didn’t feel rushed at all, the way I have at other places. I also had a lot of questions for him during the cut and he happily answered them all. I would definitely recommend this place if you’re at all nervous about getting your hair cut. They are super chill and you’ll feel at ease in no time. :)

Yelp
Seriously the only "salon" I've ever been to that I didn't feel judged, rushed, uncomfortable. I literally walked in and thought.....these are my people. (If your people are inclusive, relaxed, not high drama and like rock n'roll music these are your people too!!)

Yelp
HiFi Hair and Records is the real deal for those who appreciate a Minneapolis original. Johnny is the consummate host whether he's tending to your hair or your musical interests. On this occasion I took advantage of both options. I appreciated Johnny's listening to my hair history and cleaning up the mess I walked in with. Great conversation, great vibe, great service. Music is definitely fashion when Johnny is the DJ.

Yelp
Right when I didn't think I could love my hair anymore, Josh changed it up. I now have the cutest haircut IN MY LIFE. I get compliments everywhere I go and the comments are very flattering. Trust me when I tell you, let the guy do what he does. I let him have free reign, he is a master. The atmosphere knocks it out of the park. The banter makes it easy and less weird. I don't feel like I have to make small talk, it is just a group of skilled artists doing what they are best at. HiFi is my favorite EVER! I have a new love.

Yelp
I came in to HiFi feeling really sad about my bad haircut and color from another salon a couple of months back. Johnny fixed me up with a much better cut and I thought maybe I'd give him a chance to fix my color. When I came back a couple months later to take my hair from brownish to very blond he blew my mind! He took the time to get the color just right without frying my hair and I left feeling super cute and very happy to be prettied up at the hands of a true professional. I recommend him to anyone who needs to find "the one" stylist that finally gets it and takes the time to get your look just right. Plus he can flick hair like 12 feet across a room so, it's like style and a show ;)

Yelp
Was here for a special event. Had a great time. Will come back in for a regular day of busines but loved the atmosphere of this cute place.

Yelp
I recently heard there was a new/used record store to open in Loring Park (across from the Basilica) that was going to focus on Local Twin Cities Music. So I went down to one of their Sunday Night events, The ODDFATHERS (Brynn of FLIPP) were playing in the adjoining room, Bobby Z. (Prince's Revolution) was doing a Radio Remote in the hallway of the salon. The MONKEES & New Your Dolls 45s were playing on the jukebox, piped overhead. Totally Awesome Experience !!! So it's sort of a complex of The RecordStore, The Hair Salon & a small Live Venue. The recordstore (partnered with Go Johnny Go Records in White Bear Lake) it's self is great, hundreds of vintage local posters, as well as hundreds of Local Artists Records & CDs (some cassettes), Turntables & T-Shirts. Many records I saw there were $3oo & $5.oo, the top 25 in demand (Zeppelin, Floyd, Zappa & Beatles) were of course more. As well as the Vintage Local Greats Replacements, Soul Asylum, Husker Du etc. This record store calls back to the days of old in the 70s when Recordstores were Thee place to go & hang out !!! This place is a must go to at least once .... tell 'em the ZERo sent ya.

Yelp
We often find a stylist and stick with them for years. My last was wonderful. I loved him. Then my life changed, everything went upside down. I stopped even caring for almost two years. After years of a look, I was ready for something completely new. A brand new vision and take on my style. I booked the appointment, was able to go the next day. I left it entirely up to him and the result is wonderful. Just some of the comments from friends today, "You are stunning" "I can't stop looking at you" "It is so cute" "You look beautiful" That makes for a good day and is exactly the type of response that a thoughtful and inspired stylist can achieve when you are open to their vision and ready to take a risk. It was time for a change and the results were wonderful. The space is intimate. The music was stellar and the service was topnotch.

Yelp
In the past year I have gotten my hair cut/dyed at 5 places. I've been to Moxie,Haus, Haven, Aveda school, Salon on Grand--- all places that people raved about on Yelp. Let me tell you, though, HiFi surpasses all of them. When you enter you are greeted by Johnny, who is definitely one of the coolest people I've ever met. He's quick to grab you coffee or show you how to use the jukebox, and loves explaining the various posters and ticket stubs on the walls. I had my hair done by Lindsay, who gave me the best haircut of my life (by far). The amount of compliments I've gotten in the past 24 hours is actually pretty ridiculous. Not only did she get what I wanted perfectly, but she also improved my idea. The highlights she gave me were GORGEOUS and her layering was flawless. She just went above and beyond. As an added bonus, Lindsay is the first hairstylist who hasn't combed over the piercings I have in my ear. She was super careful to comb around them every time. Can't say how much I appreciate this. It sucks to have your ear burning for days after getting a haircut. Everyone was very easy to talk to and just plain fun-- no more awkward small talk. I could rave about HiFi all day. Even though I'll be moving to Brooklyn in the next few weeks you can be sure I'll be scheduling an appointment at HiFi with Lindsay every time I visit. I honestly didn't know think that I would ever find my perfect hair salon, but I'm so glad I did! Now if only they were located in New York... At any rate, this place is just plain awesome. Don't hesitate for a moment to schedule an appointment-- you won't be disapointed. :) Christine

Yelp
A newbie to Minneapolis, I waited as long as possible to replace my old New Mexico barber (who served me scotch and whisky, btw). This proved a tall order. However, my experience with HiFi Hair and Records left me completely satisfied, albeit thirsty. Johnny, the owner, - who looked like he stepped out of a Ramones poster - greeted me at the door, took a couple glances at my hair, nodded and calmly started the process, as if he knew what I wanted without making me explain. We talked about Minneapolis, history, music - from The Beach Boys to The Replacements - and the importance of doing what you love. Johnny started out as a musician, and you could tell by the way he twirled his comb in his hand after every snip, like a drummer on his throne. The haircut was efficient, affordable and well done. After the cut, I toured the record and audio section, and very well could have walked out with an amplifier and a vintage Weird Al vinyl. Go to see Johnny or any of the staff for a cut, color, amp or record. They do men's and women's cuts and color, and they offer parking along with a convenient spot near a bus station on Hennepin near Loring Park. I may miss the whisky, but I found my new go to for my hair.

Yelp
This is another rave review for Josh Mercado because he gave me the best haircut of my life. There was a cute little quote in the salon that said something like "blessed be the hair stylists who bring out the beauty in others". Seriously, that's what he did. I feel beautiful! I wish I lived in Minneapolis so he could cut my hair every time (I'm visiting from Oklahoma). Thanks Josh for the amazing haircut! Let me add that he took me from heavily damaged chin length hair, to a very feminine long pixie cut that is so attractive. He nailed it.

Yelp
I've had my hair cut here several times and it always turns out well. They helped me find and try a new hair style, by my request, which I really like. The staff is super friendly and always accommodating when I need to reschedule and adjust appointments. The other thing I'd add is don't let the rock themed decor throw you off or scare you away. The folks here are really professional and do a really nice cut, in addition to cool chameleon mohawks.

Johnny X.

Yelp
Hands down, the best place in Minne...okay, The Twin Cit...hell, all of Minnesota to get a haircut. It's not just the talent, it's the vibe. A literal shrine to great music and culture (especially the local scene). After your cut/color and a good chinwag, go next door and browse their new and used vinyl, CDs, and equipment. You seriously can't go wrong here.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this place! Great people, fantastic style. Lindsay did an amazing job with my cut and colour! I'm looking forward to my next appointment! She is an amazing person in a truly great place. I would highly recommend any of the stylists, the place, and of course, Lindsay!

Yelp
Josh has been my guy for almost 2 years now. He has never let me down. I moved here from LA, and finding someone new is never easy. Aside from his ability to cut and shape men's hair of all lengths, he also is very astute at gauging when I am up for chatting, and when I just need to enjoy the silence when he is doing his thing. He also knows how to play the long game in terms of guiding me on the way to growing my hair out. Other reviews comment on the ambiance, which is sincere and with adequate history-which I couldn't say the same for back home in some Silverlake spots. As long as I remain in MN this will be my spot.

Yelp
I showed up to Minneapolis around May 2012, from Michigan. Here for a contract job doing the Chemist career that has amounted to so much Jack s*, as I've become an adult. I first went to HIFI in the week before starting a contract job at Medtronic, moving here from Michigan after a small (personally considered) unsuccessful move to Newport Beach, CA. I got found myself at HIFI because I wanted a fresh haircut for my new job and it was close to where I was currently renting a vacation spot (back in my new Midwest (I'm from Detroit suburbs, so I'm still enthralled with the city here)) For me, getting my hair cut is as much about the experience, about trust, about just getting me to think of myself as a person that looks good, as it is about anything. When I want a hot fuck, I send my girlfriend in to have my best stylists get her set up right :-) The Location in Loring Park learnt "can I say 'learnt'?" me a lot about the city. Anyway, in the shadow of the great dome of the basilica, HIFI Highlights that (newbie thinks is secret) little neighborhood. And through my monthly (or six weeks, I'm a busy dude) communication with John I've found everything good about this city, even the riverfront downtown where I live for now. Not to mention that the hair studio itself, with the Jukebox (all good music) and all the art on the wall, will one day be a tourist attraction in it's own right (especially if John suddenly dies). The shit's incredible, the music that always plays is incredible. There's even good beer. If you haven't checked it out, consider that you may be failing at life. Think about it. You get one, it's worth checking everything out and doing things best, right? Oh, and the only people I seem able to make friends with are rock stars and unattainably hot women. This is my own thing that I need to figure out why and how it happens, but at least I've got a good haircut that's not fucking it up. I'm not a pretty man.

Yelp
This salon is AMAZING! A punk rock themed salon around the corner from Loring Park--does it get any better than that? I just got the best haircut of my life, plus the most enjoyable salon experience I've ever had. GO THERE NOW!

Stirling F.

Yelp
I've been going for a few years now, but it only just occurred to me to write a review. Johnny is wonderful - he gave me my first short haircut in my adult life. I spent about a year rocking various wonderful short cuts and then he did a fantastic job of managing the awkward growing out stages when I decided to go long again. He is a joy to chat with - so upbeat and positive and the store is AMAZINGLY cool. Better than kittens riding unicorns. Way better than sliced bread.

Yelp
I'm a serially uncommitted hair cut client. Have rarely gone to the same place more than 2-3 times. But now I'm sold on Hi-Fi Hair for 12 months running. They're all great but Josh, in particular, gets the cut for this early balding bloke's head just right every time. Check them out!

Yelp
I'm here on vacay, and did a Facebook shoutout to see where I should get a hair cut. My friend in Chicago recommended HiFi, and the minute I saw the website I knew it was the only place for me. I had a lovely phone chat with the owner Jonny and luckily there was an opening a few hours later. I LOVE my haircut. Jess spent a lot of time on it, and did a great job. Best haircut I've had in years. I have crazy thick, unruly hair that's hard to cut, and she knew exactly what to do. I finally got the rocknroll haircut I've wanted for years. It was so fun looking at all the rock posters and old concert ticket stubs covering the walls. Where else can you listen to the Replacements, Bowie, Cash, The Stones, The Pretenders, etc. on a jukebox while you get a haircut. I spent the whole time talking to Jess and Jonny about music. So fun. Made my day. I plan on coming back next time I'm in MN!!!!

Yelp
Had a blast! Loved the music and the banter with the cutters. John is funny.

Yelp
One of the best places I have been. I have long thick hair and found Josh Mercado is highly skilled at cutting and styling. Looking forward to my next appointment!
