"The Higgins Beach Market is the perfect place to pick up all the provisions you'll need for a great beach day." - Travel + Leisure Editors

10 Best Beach Towns in Maine

Google
This place used to be amazing for food, and the best lobster roll in Maine...but, no more. The lobster roll is overpriced and tiny; two bites of lobster on a small hot dog bun. The chicken fingers are odd bits of chicken in a weird "batter" of sorts - definitely not kid-friendly chicken fingers! Overpriced mediocre food. So sad because this place used to be so great! We won't be back.

Neat little place. Stopped here with the pup. Dog friendly. Awesome lobster rolls. Option of 1/2 pound or full pound. Of course had to try out the full pound. Will stop by again. If you are in the area you should check it out, it also sits on a pretty popular bike route.

I wanted to try and give higgins beach market multiple chances only because I grew up in the area and always loved this place. But unfortunately it’s not worth the money anymore. Ordered a chicken salad sandwich which cost $18 (this is including a $3 tip). Something told me to open the sandwich up before I left because it was so small! there was barely a schmear of chicken salad in the sandwich when I picked it up. With one slice of tomato and a small piece of lettuce. Kindly asked if it was possible to add more seeing I paid a total of $18. They did. But the quality of the salad was not good at all. So many herbs and spices I never ended up eating it. I miss the old days there where portions were decent, and the food was worth paying.

Google
The good: The food is pretty solid. Breakfast sandwiches are fantastic, some of the in house sauces and chili crisp they sell are great. Can't say the food itself has ever really disappointed. The bad: A bit pricey and the service is super inconsistent. So far they've left things out of my order around 50% of the time so definitely check that you have everything you ordered before you leave.

Google
Best lobster roll I've ever had. More importantly, the amount of lobster compared to the price can't be topped.

This place used to be great but now it’s never open for dinner. Used to stop on my way home from work but it closes wayyy to early

Google
The fried clam dinner was good, thankfully we had enough fries to fill us up. At $34 it is very expensive for the few clams we received. It was the end of the day and early in the season so hopefully not the norm. The tartar sauce was not typical Maine chunky sauce but still tasty. The mushroom ricotta pizza was wicked good :-) keep it up and keep improving. Thanks! Looking forward to more trying more new options and thankful your here for us! DAN

Google
As other reviews say, hidden robbery. Definitely stop in Portland for anything before coming here. They don't mark the price of their items, so it's a mystery until you get to the register. Not to mention, they use those iPad registers, so even if you're just buying a 6 pack, they will still ask you for a tip. Also, there is no bathroom, even for customers.

Yelp
Great place to go for an after beach lunch. Has a variety of food, and also sells snacks for a side. Service was reasonable for the food, but wasn't super quick either. The ambience of the place is cute, although it only has 1 picnic table. I would come again

Yelp
The food here is way better than you could really expect. Over the course of a week we tried most of the sandwiches. The fish sandwich, roast beef, breakfast sandwich and roast pork were all fantastic. Chicken cutlet was good. great place to stop if you're in the area

Jeff D.

Yelp
First off this is not a place to go to if you're hungry. The portion size is for Hobbits. The good news is that the quality ingredients used here create some legit sandwiches and pizza. The beer selection and wine are both great if you don't mind paying 25% more than Hannaford, which is just a skip through the Shire at 3 miles away.

Yelp
Higgins Beach Market has changed owners over the years and this past august we decided to try takeout for dinner on the beach. The fam went with a variety of options: I had the hot dog basket that came with fries that overall was very good and well cooked, fries weren't crispy, but they tasted almost hand-cut and I got a ton of them. We also tried their pizza-pepperoni that was about the size of a medium pizza when compared elsewhere size wise and were pleasantly surprised by how good it was- thin crispy crust and nice flavor. My wife had the Falafel sandwich which came on a baguette and said it was good, but a tad hard on the bread and she wished it had some Greek Tzatziki sauce which often comes with falafel. The smoked turkey sandwich was ok and came with a chili crisp mayo that was too hot for someone who doesn't do well with spicy and the crispy chicken bite basket was average. Beer local and craft selection was good and the owner there recommended a limited DIPA release we ended up trying. One thing I would appreciate they do in the future is provide prices on beer and what not- between two 4 packs it ran us over $37! (you are paying for convenience here but still, a decent markup compared to other prices locally for the same beer). Food was ready when promised for pickup on time and order came out as described. All in all we'll be back.

Yelp
First the good news: Ingredients / overall quality is good. HB Market definitely offers better quality food than you would expect from a beach shack type place. Not-so-good news: 1) Portion size: Very small portions , especially considering an Italian Sandwich will set you back $18!!! First off, no sandwich should ever cost $18 in life. That just shouldn't be a thing. However, if you are going to charge $18 for a sandwich, that ought to be a large sandwich. At Higgins Beach Market, it is not. Still costs $18 though. 2) Consistency: Maybe this is because there are a bunch of (super-friendly / well-meaning) teenagers staffing the place, but your order can be wildly different one day to the next depending who makes it. One day, plenty of olives, next day NO Olives -- cross your fingers! : ) Bottom Line: Good spot for a one-off, but until the sandwiches get less expensive or bigger / more consistent, will have to take my regular business elsewhere

Yelp
Higgins Beach Market makes great breakfast and lunch sandwiches whether you're coming back from a morning surf or want a break for lunch. Their bread is excellent and the staff friendly. They have a wide selection of drinks and beer available too. Their sandwiches could be a bit larger, but for many they are likely just right.

Thomas S.

Yelp
The very best - and consistently good - fresh coffee in the area - better than Starbucks (which I actually like a lot). Also, it is OPEN! The Yelp notice that it's closed is incorrect as of this date (June 1, 2023).

Meredith J.

Yelp
Have gone here an embarrassing amount of times since they opened for the season. Everything we've had has been amazing (breakfast lunch and dinner) and we will keep coming back! Personal favorites are the potato head breakfast sandwich (on a croissant!), pork sandwich, fish tacos, and pepperoni pizza. The hours must be hard to staff but are so appreciated as everywhere else seems to be closed on Monday and Tuesday, and love the great selection of beer. It was great before Big Tree took over but now I think even better- so cool to have such great food options in a beach market atmosphere. Wish they could be open year round but I imagine it'd get a little cold.

Sarah C.

Yelp
I didn't buy anything here because I was hoping to try a lobster roll, but at market price of 24$ I wasn't really into it. They have a separate counter for food and another window on the side for ice cream and a few picnic tables. The shop part is super cute, it's got a little bit of everything and the owners and people that work there were really nice and friendly. I would have tried something if I hadn't been so keen on seafood.

Fides M.

Yelp
I am so happy to be back in Maine this summer and enjoying the beaches close to my summer home! Higgins Market is a gem! Not only are the lobster rolls delicious but the desserts are creative and amazing. Also nice is having a market that has all kinds of provisions. The Maine-made items they sell are unique. It's great that the new owners have stayed true to the neighborhood legacy of the market's origin's.

Gregory J.

Yelp
Stopped in for the first time today and grabbed two orders of Fish Tacos. A pair of soft tortilla tacos with fried haddock, slaw, avocado, tomatoes and cilantro... Absolutely delicious!! A nice selection of eats, beer and wine & they do breakfast sandwiches and burritos too! We will be back!!

Fran S.

Yelp
My family was visiting the region and found this place on the Toast app. My companion ordered the grilled cheese and fries while I order the chicken bites and fries. OMG, the fries are awesome as is the chili ranch sauce (love the kick it has). It was ready right when we pulled up and tasted very fresh. Loved the convenience and speed of service as well as the food.

Matt B.

Yelp
Fantastic, friendly place to stop going to or coming from the beach. I've enjoyed many breakfast sandwiches, snacks and cookies from this place and got the fish tacos for dinner. Fantastic fried fish with a great hot sauce. The only thing I'd recommend is to double up on the corn tortillas as they tend to tear apart easily. Great food, great service, great spot. Make the stop!

Irina G.

Yelp
I am so glad we stopped for lunch before heading to the beach! I got the fish tacos and they were delicious! Perfect for a nice light lunch. I will say it is a little pricey but nothing too expensive. Definitely stop here if you are on your way to Higgins beach!

Brian S.

Yelp
Small but special The Higgins Beach Market is a tiny place not far from Higgins Beach. In the past lots of beaches had quaint and incredibly useful and fun places like this but they are quickly fading into the past and are becoming memories. Fortunately Higgins Beach Market seems to be doing quite well and all the local people as well as the tourists flock to this place during the summer months. Not hard to see why it is so popular. They manage to cram all sorts of groceries, fresh veggies and fruits, junk food, booze, ice cream and all sorts of other stuff into this relatively tiny place, They even have pizza, lobster rolls and humongous sandwiches. A wonderful little market where you can get stuff to feed you belly, load up on the beach necessities as well as buy cool and crummy t-shirts and tacky Maine souvenirs. You can even catch up on the local gossip and talk to some very friendly and genuine people. Not many places like this are still around. And that is such a shame.

Rob W.

Yelp
Love this place. I am only here a couple times of the year, but always look forward to sandwiches and pizza. It is awesome to spend the day chilling at one of the best beaches anywhere on the planet and then only have to take a 5 minute walk to pick up some great food. Sean is an old school proprietor who talks to his customers, and keeps the place humming at the same time. One of the best things about this business is that although there is a captive audience, Sean treats everyone like he wants their business. Also, they have a killer falafel wrap that I can't even find in Metrowest Boston. Portions are huge: Value = customers = a great spot!

Jennifer C.

Yelp
The new owners have really improved this market!! Selection is fantastic - they sell tandem coffee, great variety of beer, wine, and their sandwiches are delicious. So happy they've revamped it!

Anne L.

Yelp
This was a great spot to stop in and grab some sandwiches, snacks, and beer (good selection to choose from!) with a couple friends on our way to Cape Elizabeth.

Lauren B.

Yelp
Higgins beach market is so convenient with great coffee, breakfast sandwiches and lunch. I love their breakfast burrito. They even cute beach themed home decor and gifts. They no longer have a minimum spend on credit cards which is so much better if you're just running by for a drink or coffee. Definitely a must try if you're in the area!

Scott W.

Yelp
I want this spot to be better than it is, I'd also like it to be good as it was. The vibe of the food has gone though a pretentious upgrade. First up the chowder is good but... it comes with one cracker, not a classic bag of oyster crackers, also the clams are not chopped, they are full size. It makes for a chewy experience. But the flavors of the chowder are on point, I also appreciated it was a thinner fisherman style instead of a thick tourist spot style. The lobster roll had big chunks, but was overall small and lacking flavor. The burger was decent. The kids chicken chunks were gristly fried 'claws', this really needs to be improved, the kids want chicken tenders, not chicken toughs. The kids grilled cheese was short on cheese and long on crusty edges. It felt like an adult's grilled cheese, not gooey toasty 6 year olds dream. The fires were tasty, they got soggy on the ride home, putting them in a cup or something that allows the moisture to escape would help these transport better. I think the new owners have potential, the menu needs some refinement IMO. Also I'd like if they brought back the breakfast sandwiches that are ready to go. After a morning session and before work I just want to grab something and go, I don't have time to wait for an order to be made.

Daniel S.

Yelp
We stopped in twice on our trip. Everyone was so friendly, the food was incredible (which I wasn't expecting). I wish that I had a place like this near home.

Caroline L.

Yelp
Love Sean so much. Great market, great food, huge selection and great prices. His lobster rolls are to die for and so much better than other tourist traps like Portland Lobster Company with like 3x the lobster meat at the same price. Great pizza, ice cream, lobster rolls, fresh produce, italian sandwiches and great market inventory with low prices. Totally my go to lunch and dinner place in all of Maine. Thanks Sean for all you do, really don't know what we'd do without you and the market!

Jen B.

Yelp
Best lobster roll in town! Friendly staff and owners, always aim to please. Also recommend the home made pizza and falafel wrap. Will definitely be back for beach season!

Allison T.

Yelp
I had a wonderful pizza with fresh peppers the other day. The owner was so nice, he brought us red pepper flakes when we asked and was just kind and genuine. The pizza was made-to-order, hot and so cheesy. Can't wait to return.

James K.

Yelp
Stop here by accident while on a bike ride. The owner and operator gave me travel advice that positively impacted my Maine vacation. The Higgins Beach Market embodies all of the good things a New Yorker expects when coming to Maine!

Danny M.

Yelp
OK, I get it. It's a beach grab 'n' go kind of place. But, seriously, they sell the worst lobster roll in the State of Maine. They claim it's "fresh every morning", but I would bet that's a lie. The lobster meat is dry and tastelss. The dressing is bland. What could make it worse? I'll tell you--it's big. That means you get a lot of a bad thing! There is no excuse for serving anything like this. AVOID IT! The guy whom i assume is the owner is a real jerk, too. As I see it, if you don't like what you do, find something else. Frankly, at the prices they charge, he must surely be able to find SOME reason to enjoy his work. Instead, he is unaccommodating, nasty and abrupt. I now drive an extra three miles in order to avoid getting my lunch from this joint.

Catherine M.

Yelp
Amazing food and great service. Not just for a road side stop .... Legit great food prepared with love!!!

Theolonius D.

Yelp
New owner has a bad attitude. Stopped in to grab a soda & sunscreen. $15. Was going to zip on the OneWheel to check the crowd at Higgins before heading to Scarborough. Owner told me no had to move now for lunch crowd. Didn't say anything else. Just booted me. Last owner was awesome. Too bad. Won't be wasting my money there again.

Bradley A.

Yelp
A great place to stop in after the beach or Just when you want a good lunch. Lots of great sandwich's and one of the best lobster rolls i have ever had. Worth making the trip to visit the market.

Bill L.

Yelp
Service was good. Surprised at price of lobster roll, over $26. Priced for the tourist not repeat business.

Liz H.

Yelp
This market is amazing! It is the only market within walking distance to HIggins Beach. Suprisingly, I had the best lobster roll of my visit here. It was HUGE and fresh with big chunks of lobster and plenty of claw meat. It was about 4 times the size of the lobster roll I had at Twin Lights. It was so big that I had to save 1/2 for another meal (and that has never happened to me before with a lobster roll). They also have a nice selection of sandwiches (can't wait to try the falafal), local sodas, beer, wine, snacks, home made potato chips and bakery items.

Jj B.

Yelp
One of the best places in/around Portland. The sandwiches are huge and always delicious, the owner is a great guy and super-friendly.

Jess M.

Yelp
SUPER cute market with pizza, sandwiches, lobster (call ahead so they can boil them for you), ice cream, beer, wine and cute Maine souvenirs! The owners are fantastic and always give my doggies treats when we go for our Higgins Beach walks!

J W.

Yelp
Sean is one of the nicest, most generous guys around..Always rises above and treats folks like "real people" should..Great rental service, munchies and more. We miss you during "off season"! Thanks for being down the road..

Annastasia C.

Yelp
Subs, wings, pizza, you name it - all outstanding. Customer service is great too. Just wish they were open year round, as I have to settle for other places till Spring!
