On the Grid : High Point Barbershop

"The furnishings are vintage, the beards and hairstyles are classics, and they curse like sailors, but this isn't your dad's barbershop. Hardcore, rap and metal plays over the speakers while the patrons joke and catch-up, and the barbers skillfully sweep their shears and razors, sculpting tight fades and beard trims. Appointments take 30 minutes but the waiting list is weeks long, so book now or try to drop in when you can." - Mobelux

Google
I've heard it said several times that High Point gives the best haircuts in Richmond. That's 100% true, and from what I've seen in my travels, this place is on a level beyond the best barbershops in many other cities, as well. Awesome dudes, on-point playlists, and great haircuts. They get the style right every time. Buy some products on your way out, as well. I've never regretted taking their recommendations.

Google
First experience at High Point was exactly what I was hoping for: nice environment, friendly staff, and Andrew did a great job on my hair. Told him what I did/did not like about my hair and showed him some reference photos of what I was going for. He took all the info I gave him and delivered a cut that I’m very happy with! $42 for the service plus a tip is well worth the price IMO.

Google
Best place in Richmond for services. Been going to Jacky for 2 years now. Great vibe, music, services, staff. Plus it's a local small business whom I love to support 🩵

Google
More than just a barbershop, Highpoint is a truly authentic experience. Where barbers, front desk, and customers alike are there to because they truly care about the idea of looking your best. I have been a customer for nearly 3 years and look forward to each and every experience.

Google
I cant help that the person I was using at High Point is no long cutting hair at this location. But I went to book another barber and got my scheduled cut cancelled. Was told that every barber that you go to in this location, if its the first time that you use them. You have to start as a new customer each time. even the online booking says "New to US as a company" Great place for hair cuts, but just disappointing that you have to book yourself as a new guest every time they lose an employee.

Google
High point barbershop is the best place to get your haircut. I've been going to Foster to have my haircut for around a decade now, but any of the guys in the shop give great haircuts and everyone walks out looking better than when they came in. The shop itself is laid back and cool and makes you want to get to your appointment early to spend time enjoying the vibes of the shop. The ability to book multiple appointments months in advance is super convenient as well.

Nicholas Cipolla

Google
Tia is great! It was my first time there, loved the attention to detail in my cut and really the whole experience. All the staff were really welcoming and the whole vibe (music, decor) in the place is *chef’ kiss*. Be sure to get there a few minutes early to secure a parking spot.

Google
For the first time in two years, when I got home from a haircut my girlfriend didn’t respond with “It’ll grow out”. She loves it. I love it. Thank you, Jeff.

Yelp
I moved to Richmond in May 2016. One of the things I over looked was where I was going to get my haircut. The same person had been cutting my hair for over a decade, and like most who are probably reading this, I am particular about my hair. After some light research I came across a couple of places but decided on High Point and it has been one of the best decisions I have made sense moving to RVA. PLAN AHEAD. Like any good barbershop, you won't be able to do a walk-in (though they are opening up another shop soon). Call and get the soonest available appointment. They have a full time administrative assistant and he is super friendly and knows his stuff! After my first appointment he gave me great advice on hair product. The barber I was paired with is Foster and he will be cutting my hair for the remainder of my time in this city. My hair has never looked better. It is important to note that I would trust every barber they have at High Point after seeing their cuts as I get mine. My first cut took longer because he asked questions to understand what I wanted. He is incredibly knowledgeable and knows what is best! He will always adhere to what you want but I would suggest listening to his end game suggestions. At my last haircut, some unforeseen circumstances left Foster a little behind. My appointment was his last, so I ended up going past closing time. He never rushed and he took his time. After checking and making his minor adjustments he asked me how I liked it. I approved and thanked him and then he continued the usual warm shave of the back of my neck (included with haircut) despite what time it was. They care and I would 100% recommend High Point to any and every one.

Yelp
Old timey vibe and ambiance. Seems like corporate lunch haircut place but without the traffic of the 90s. Service was good, and my haircut looked great. Great value

Wendy K.

Yelp
I sent my son to Highpoint to get a haircut. we expected to spend $50. We were shocked to learn that the cost was $90. When I called to complain I was told "This is the cost", completely at the discretion of the barber. Perhaps my son didn't have the right amount of tattoos. Highpoint is a complete ripoff. Do not believe that they will charge you what is quoted on the website.

Mountain G.

Yelp
Not too impressed. Called to schedule an appointment with Elliott on the advice of a friend. The front desk manager said "Elliott isn't taking new clients". Didn't ask who referred me, offer to schedule me with someone else, ask any details about what I needed - not even a "sorry about that. Nothing, just a straight brush-off. Sometimes a business does so well that they feel it's ok to blow off referrals. Not a great way to get multiple referrals or keep your bookings queue full. Companies who do this develop a reputation for being arrogant, and sorely wish they hadn't when business hits a downturn and they need those clients and referrals. Disappointing.

Derek M.

Yelp
Moved to Richmond, and need a haircut badly. I had no idea where to go, I had heard about High Point so I checked them out, and luckily when I walked though the door, I immediately saw old pal, Alex, after at least 10 years, he recognized me and we had! Get a cut by Alex, highly recommended!!

Yelp
Always a great time. I've gotten cut by a few guys here and they always come out great. I couldn't recommend Highpoint more.

Rob B.

Yelp
First haircut I got here was excellent. Like 11/10, was getting compliments left and right which has never happened in my life. Second cut was... not so great. Went to a local shop today and paid half the price for a great haircut. So, glad I tried this place but an off-day isn't ok when they charge you $50.

Yelp
I have forbidden my husband from ever returning here. At a visit a few months ago, he asked to have his beard shaped up. At least 3 INCHES were chopped off in this process. That's not a shape up! After expressing his displeasure, he was offered a discount... on a future visit. After months, his beard had grown back out, and he was lured in by the discount. This time the beard came back okay but the simple haircut was abysmal. They somehow managed to style in a cowlick! I just don't see how this place is rated so highly.

Yelp
Scheduled a shave for my 93-year old father for my nephew's wedding because, well, he's a little hit and miss when he shaves and I wanted him to look fabulous. Made the reservation several weeks in advance and he really looked forward to it. Adam treated him so well and gave him a great shave, which wasn't easy. Thank you so much. Other than the groom, daddy was the best looking guy at the wedding!!

Yelp
You literally cannot say enough good things about High Point. They are definitely the best place to get a men's haircut in the greater Richmond area. The style and positive energy that flows through this business is infectious, and the barbers consistently deliver quality cuts to their customers. The only downside of being the best is meeting such high demands, which is why I'm really looking forward to the opening of their second location in Scott's Addition later this year, along with pretty much every other guy in the area, as currently it takes 3-4 weeks to schedule a haircut. I get it and I should schedule my haircuts more regularly, but I have barber commitment issues. Everyone rocks, so definitely check them out.

Niv A.

Yelp
By far the worst hair cut I have ever got in my life..!! My hair on top is uneven, all around the head and the sideburns was done by a machine and wasn't cleaned up like a true professional with a razor blade. I left looking worst than when I came in..! And to top it all they charge 30$ for a basic haircut..!! If you are looking for a professional haircut go to a true barber Bc you aren't going to get it here.! Will never go back here. Niv,

Yelp
Jeff is the man. Great location. Call to book an Appt if first timer. Really cool old school barber vibe.

Yelp
High point is the best barbershop I've been to. Cody does a great job giving me a skin fade and pays a lot of attention to the details. I would trust every single one of the barbers here to give me a nice haircut. They are super good about keeping everyone safe rn from COVID. Dope atmosphere with dope barbers. 10/10 would recommend!

Michael P.

Yelp
I moved to Richmond in 2017 to attend VCU. I'd always been very particular about my hair, so I was hesitant to move to a new barbershop. I picked Highpoint because of the glowing reviews, and have never turned back since! Rashod has been the only barber I trust for 4 years now, and every single visit has led to good conversation, stylish cuts, and great music choices service. Special shoutout to Scott at the front desk for the excellent customer service. If you're a man in RVA who needs a stylish haircut from a barber you can trust, go to high point!
google avatar

Ryan N.

Yelp
Great place, they follow CDC guidelines and still give a great haircut and customer service.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
Can't speak on the whole shop although everyone seemed pretty solid in their craft but Corey did an amazing job. Very particular on who cuts my hair and after months of research I landed on Corey and it took another couple months to get in to see him. Well worth the wait because you can't rush greatness. Razor, clippers, scissors the man can handle it all, definitely NOT a one trick pony. Killed it for my cut before my wedding.

Yelp
Expected to be blown away by this place and was. Near flawless experience. Before I say anything about this place, I just have to give a shoutout to their front desk guy. Super friendly, amazing customer service, informative, and welcoming. I never caught his name, but he knows what he's doing. Korey cut my hair, and I loved it. Super tight fade with a little bit on top. Process was smooth, and he was chatty but not overtly chatty. Got me in and out quick but wasn't rushed at all. Efficient and to the point. The layout of the place is great. Simplistic, rustic, and comfortable. I can't stand some of these flashy barber shops with pool tables, a dozen TVs, jukeboxes, and everything thrown in your face to be like "hey! We know you're a dude so let's pander to you!" Highpoint keeps it chill and let's their service and barber skills do the talking. I also loved the metal/hardcore soundtrack. You gotta make a reservation far ahead of time (sometimes a month), and the prices are sorta steep ($30 a cut), but it's worth it. I already have my next appointment scheduled.

Yelp
Just moved to Richmond a few months ago and was recommended to get my haircut here from friends. I'm absolutely happy I did and also got my boyfriend to give them a try. We're both happy with the results and have made this our primary barbershop. I personally get my cut from Eoin and my boyfriend gets it from Rashod. Both highly knowledgeable and talented. This also goes for the rest of barbers they all do an incredible job on everyone I've seen them cut. They do get booked up quickly but that only means they're that good. The environment is calm and conversations are good. Keep up the good work guys!
google avatar

Benjamin A.

Yelp
Hard to find s good straight razor place in this area. This was no exception. Not a very close shave that I'm used to. When is the art of shaving coming here!!!
google avatar

Tyler G.

Yelp
Got a great haircut here. Rashad took his time and had good suggestions on what would look best with the style I wanted. The place looks cool and I got in with a call 2 days ahead.
google avatar

Jarrod T.

Yelp
So I've been getting Jack to cut my hair since he moved to Richmond. I'm reluctant to say this, because I'm selfish and enjoy getting easy appointments, but Jack is the best barber in town. He gives great cuts, and I hear the other guys do to. Its also apparently the place to go for a beard trim. I've never been needed that service so I can't comment there... This is the third spot he's been set up and I Iike it the best. It's an old school barber shop in spirit, but with a current feel. The atmosphere is light, and it's a good haircut experience. They've got a few gels and creams for sale as well that I don't see in stores. Make sure you've got an appointment. They stay booked up for weeks, but there's good reason.
google avatar

Matt C.

Yelp
I've been here twice now and I have to say I am a huge fan! If you want a true taste of Richmond this is the perfect place. It's probably too cool for me, but I don't care. They're blaring punk rock and it is full of bearded tattooed hipsters. Rashad has done an awesome job on my hair, however the last cut he gave me was perfect! I basically gave him free reign and he has done a great job. If you want Rashad you can make an appointment the same day, but others book up months in advance. They may be more expensive than you are used to. My wife cut my hair for free for the past 10 years, so I had some initial sticker shock, but trust me it is well worth it!
google avatar

Adam V.

Yelp
Best haircut I've had since living in Richmond for the past 7 years! Good conversation, relaxed environment, and these guys know what they're doing. I believe my barbers name was Owen. He nailed it!

Oscar G.

Yelp
My favorite barbershop by far. Got the Richmond vibe with the most professional barbers/staff, they know exactly what they're doing there. Go to my barber Hoang, he just started there and has been killing it behind the clippers. He's very diligent about his work. They've earned my loyalty!

Brandon C.

Yelp
Worst haircut I have ever received. Asked the barber for a mid length regular cut. I wanted a symmetrical cut. I did not want my part cut short. That is exactly what I received. Every bit of my hair was uneven, chunky and without form. My hair on top was about two finger lengths while my middle bangs fell down to the tip of my nose. As a wrap up, this was not the haircut I wanted or described. It cost me an extra $60 to have it fixed elsewhere. Did I mention my barber was drinking a beer and badmouth the last customer. If you value your hair do not go here.
google avatar

Tom S.

Yelp
Wow. This place is amazing. I went in and got the best cut ever. Everyone has mentioned how good it looks. It's super chill inside and it has a great vibe. Definitely coming back and telling everyone else what's up. It's appointment only but if you're over due call them today and schedule for your day off. They'll make you look like a million bucks and feel like it too. Best. Haircuts. And beard maintenance (I can't grow one, but other clients look great). EVER.
google avatar

Ryan P.

Yelp
Best spot for a haircut. It's not a haircut, as much as it is an experience of awesomeness. It's professional in there, but also laid back. I'd give any of the guys in there a shot to cut my hair, but I gotta say, when I go in and see Eric, the cut always looks awesome and we have hilarious convos. I let him do his thing and it always turns out awesome. So glad I was recommended to go here, try it, you'll be back. Guaranteed. Tell the guys I said hey when you go.
google avatar

Bill P.

Yelp
I followed David here from his last place. Despite being well out of my way, its worth the drive. David is the best barber I've ever had in all my years. The shop is laid back and casual. The music is loud and the conversation is interesting. I've only ever been in to see David but I imagine the other guys are great too. I usually just get my hair cut but the hot shave is a nice treat on occasion. Totally recommend High Point to everyone.
google avatar

Tommy B.

Yelp
I used to see David when he worked at Parkside, but since he left and since I moved away I haven't had a chance to get another quality cut from him. I've got to say, the new place is FANTASTIC. This is exactly what Richmond needs more of: a legit spot for guys to get a great haircut, listen to some dope tracks and socialize in the presence of likeminded individuals. You MUST make an appointment, but whoever cuts your hair will certainly do a fabulous job. They specialize in those classic haircuts your dad probably had in high school, and the walls are adorned with tattoo art, concert posters and old school skate decks. When I walked in today, they were playing Wu-Tang and cracking jokes about snow. This is not the place to go if you normally get your mom to cut it. This is also not Great Clips, so don't expect the bill to be less than $10. If you want a rad haircut, a rad environment and some rad conversation, come here. I promise you'll leave looking (and feeling) like a million bucks.

Yelp
As a life long patron of The William Byrd on Davis, it took the retiring of my regular barber for me to try some place new. Jacky and I have joked for years about me coming to his shop to get a haircut and after my first trip to see him, I'm regretting that it took me so long to go in. Hands down the best haircut I've ever had. I've already set up the next appointment and reached out to a few friends that also used Ana at the William Byrd and told them they would be in good hands here at High Point.
google avatar

Shawn B.

Yelp
Love this place First time in years having to go to new Barbershop since my move. After describing my old shop several people recommended Highpoint and they were right Went to Elliot for shave, haircut and beard trimming all spot on. Had a great time meeting all of barbers. Funny relaxed atmosphere but you never forget that these guys know, respect and are extremely good at their craft. Won't go anywhere else Amazing Back in 2 weeks
google avatar

Thomas T.

Yelp
Corey will get you right and adds a little humor to your visit as well! The people and the atmosphere is great. If I lived within a 30 mile radius of that barber shop I would be there every two weeks!

Jason A.

Yelp
Simply the best. Great group of guys that have become family to my son and I! Corey hooks me up with the cut and beard trim every three weeks. Cody takes care of my son hooking him up with a clean fade and hard part.

Stwven L.

Yelp
I was traveling for work and i really needed a haircut so i googled "best barbershop in Richmond" and i came across High Point. I normally don't trust a new barber but something about this shop pulled me in. Upon arrival i was greeted with a very friendly welcome and after a very brief wait a man named Rashod called me to his chair. Not only was it the best hair cut i think I've ever received, i had some of the best conversation!!! It was an A+ experience, the atmosphere was great, and honestly I'm thinking of going back to Richmond just for another hair cut lol!
google avatar

Nathan C.

Yelp
Young guys in a classic barber shop that makes you disappointed at all the other random places you've trusted with your hair. They are pros who provide exceptional service in a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere. Go here. Get your hair cut. Feel good. Look good. I can't recommend it enough.

Will A.

Yelp
Okay look. So like a month or so ago I was down in Richmond for work. I need a haircut, skim some reviews, check some websites and decide I need to give this place a shot. I call, and my fear was that I wouldn't be able to get in. But they hooked me up with a cancelation spot and I got in to see Corey. The cut was perfect. He talked through what I liked, asked some questions, and I showed him a picture of a recent cut and he said he's make it look better, and he did. By far the coolest part was the vibe of this shop. The dudes in there are all great barbers, but this place had a classic boy's club feel to it that made me feel like I belonged even though I'd never been there. The music is loud and rocking, in my time we switched from metal to classic rock to a little bit of something I'd never heard. The barbers were all paying close attention to their clients, but the conversation just flowed. So to set the scene, in one chair was a gay guy whose boyfriend sent him in to get a haircut. Dude is ripping on his own boyfriend the whole time and everyone is laughing along. Next to him was a corporate looking type clean cut guy, who rolls up his sleeves at some point to reveal one of the coolest tattoo sleeves I've ever seen, while he talks about his recent trip to Patagonia. Next to him is a Catholic priest, who got into a heated argument defending the merits of Chance the Rapper as an artist, while talking shit to one of the other barbers for not being able to land a wife. If that priest was in my Church, it might actually get be back to mass. When have you ever gotten a haircut where a priest is cussing out the barber and laughing right along with everyone? Next to the priest was a guy who plays in some metal band and I'm pretty sure was going to confession to the priest in the parking lot when I was leaving. If you make an appointment, be sure to show. No call, no show gets you a public shaming by wearing a sign that says your transgression for all to see. What I'm saying is that this place has a vibe that's insane. In a world where the whole world is divided this shop finds that perfect place where dudes can just hang out, no fighting, just good times, and the diversity of the barbers and the clients was so cool I might just drive down to Richmond to get my hair cut from now on.

Wil A.

Yelp
Sat with Bobby this morning for a beard trim and was blown away. The service was awesome, the staff super friendly and Bobby made sure I was getting what I wanted. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a beard trim or cut
google avatar

Justin B.

Yelp
The guys at eyepoint are great at what they do. Always entertaining conversation and a fantastic atmosphere with a great haircut. I've gotten two haircuts here in the last six months. The major issue with this place is that because they are so good at what they do they become popular and securing an appointment generally takes weeks in advance. like I said just kidding it is the issue, once in everything is great.
google avatar

Meade H.

Yelp
Its a very nice place and clean. Even though I am a conservative Republican , I did not feel the least bit discriminated against. The Barber, Patrick, did a swell job helping me recreate the Robert Wagner look from the 1958 film "In love and war". This is what I was hoping for. The music is not really to my liking (Do they not know any Merle Haggard or Patsy Cline.?) but somehow it doesn't really bother me as the ambiance and good service make up for it. And I go to church right across the street, so I will recommend it to my Bible study class. Y'all should really go here to support local business. Beware that they have a strict policy about missing your appointment. Its not something you can do more than once. Although I once had to cancel last minute because of the flu, and they were very polite about it.
google avatar

Richard P.

Yelp
I've only been here once and was skeptical about the 30 dollars but their attention to detail makes it worth it. The overall feel of the place is very lax and comfortable. The barbers are very open to conversation. Even though it is really lax they conduct themselves very professionally. Im excited to come back here for my next cut.

T L.

Yelp
Long review for a reason - stick with me here. I was in a bind yesterday after another local barber shop confirmed my appointment for 8:30 a.m., then wasn't open when I arrived, and still wasn't open 15 minutes after my appointment was scheduled with no indication of actually opening up anytime soon. This was a problem for me, because I had to look my best for a super important meeting in Charlottesville and I was leaving Richmond at 10:45. Cue Yelp search and finding High Point Barbershop, and man am I glad I did. When I arrived, the fella at the front desk politely told me that they don't take walk-ins and that they're generally booked solid for 2-3 weeks ahead. Understandable. I explained my unique and crappy situation, and after waiting about 20 minutes and with the luck of a no-show appointment by someone else, they squeezed me in. This world is tough enough as it is, but these guys really went out of their way during a busy day to help me out when I was in a tough spot. "So shines a good deed in a weary world." Even if my haircut had turned out just ok, they would have won over my business. But my haircut didn't turn out just ok. It turned out awesome. Elliott cut my hair, and I can't get over how slick it ended up. To me, the standard for whether or not I've received a good haircut is what people have to say about it. The day he cut my hair, four people (three of them girls, and that's all I really care about) told me how good my hair looked. That was without prompting. I know it sounds dorky, but the cut looked so good that I felt cooler. The digs are pretty sweet, and they were playing hardcore punk when I came in, which I appreciate. Everyone there was super professional and made it a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. I don't really go out of my way to recommend business or write Yelp reviews, but this place calls for that kind of praise. Get your hair cut here. You won't regret it.

Yelp
I was only in Richmond for a day but I am so glad I ran into the guys at High Point. When I called, JR who mans the front desk, told me that they were booked weeks in advance but he took my number in case of a cancellation. Not 15 minutes later he called me back. What luck! After my cut he told me about a great little local Italian restaurant for lunch. Now that is full service. Thanks guys for a great experience!

Yelp
If you are looking for the best barber shop in Virginia, you've found it. I don't give my hair to just any barber, but Foster and Corey are the real deal. Special thanks to the High Point Barber Shop crew for always keeping me up to date and looking fresh. Its a real classic style barber shop. I'm telling you for a fact you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Richard Z.

Yelp
Went today for my first haircut here. Jack was excellent. Coming from NYC and California I am no stranger to the barber shop. This place is top notch. The owners did an excellent job making the shop look like a traditional barber shop with their own twist added. All of them made my wife and I feel very welcomed. Already book two more appointments out. Looking forward to going back.
google avatar

Amr E.

Yelp
I'm glad I found this place after I got tired of having disastrous haircuts and beard trims at Refuge. Patrick is really good and I'll definitely keep going there.

Bryan G.

Yelp
I drive past this place on my way home everyday and decided to give it a shot when I needed someone different to cut my hair. I was set up with Rashod when I made my appointment. Like the other guys there, Rashod has been through barber school and did a 1500 hour apprenticeship. Best haircut I've ever had in my 49 years of getting haircuts! Thanks Rashod...I'll be back in a month.

Zach S.

Yelp
I've been going to Corey for about a year now at his other shop and decided to follow him to High Point when he announced he was moving. This was his first week there and I was super impressed by everything they have going on. The vibe of the shop and all of the people working there was welcoming and comfortable. I'm excited to return again and again now that Corey is apart of their team.

Wolf T.

Yelp
First time at a true barbershop in quite a few years and man did this place set the bar high. These guys know what they are doing and take pride in their work. Chill vibes and good cuts. What a gem.

Though the Meadow Street location hasn't opened yet, you can still see Jacky Flav at their pop-up location inside Shockoe Denim at 13A South 15th Street. Visit the website to book an appointment. Jack has been cutting my hair for about a year now and I've never been disappointed. In fact, I always get about a million compliments on my haircut. The prices are super reasonable and the atmosphere is really laid-back and comfortable. I can only imagine things getting better when the new shop opens.
