On the Grid : High Point Climbing Gym

"Whether you’re into pulling on highball boulders with sketchy top-outs, swinging from auto-belayed obelisk structures, or taking climbing lessons from world-renowned wall crawlers, High Point has you covered. You should also know—if you see a few trendy youths swinging from the wall outside the parking garage, it’s not a new rendition of Stomp, just some Noogans enjoying the iconic glass climbing wall." - Whiteboard

A lot of the gym was being reset this morning when I visited so my options were limited, which is totally fine and understandable - gotta reset sometime! From what I was able to climb, with auto belays and bouldering, it all seemed really power focused. Even the low grade climbs - 5.10/5.9 and up to v2, were mostly power focused and not really focused on any other technique. Sort of one-move-wonders. I wouldn’t say that’s super approachable to a beginner. I wasn’t able to climb the outside walls because there was some weather moving in, which was a bummer but totally understandable. That said, the gym was very clean and well laid out. Staff was friendly enough. They did have lots of problems and routes I wasn’t able to try but looked fun.

Yelp
Went out to Foster Falls with Mike as our guide. Had a really awesome time. Mike was awesome and really went out of his to teach and reinforce skills. We will definately be back!

Yelp
I travel around the country for work, and try to visit climbing gyms in whatever cities I'm in. The vast majority of gyms have super helpful and friendly staff. This does not apply to High Point. The guy working the front desk / waivers was extremely unfriendly and omitted important information that really held me back at the gym (I wasn't able to get belay tested even though I lead climb outside because no one told me I had to do it within 15 minutes of getting there). The guy was cold, made absolutely no eye contact, wasn't helpful, and was pretty condescending. I don't know what his deal was -- he was rude to everyone who walked in. My friend who saw all this wanted to leave immediately, but I encouraged us to give the gym a chance. Second point: The open/community/non-climbing space to actual climbing wall ratio is laughably bad. The use of this huge space is so awful that the $24 day pass charge feels like a scam. So much open space and not much actual climbing (top rope, lead). The boulder area is big but if you don't boulder you're going to get bored pretty quickly. I've never seen a climbing gym with similar square footage have such little actual climbing. A good comparison would be Pac Pipe in Oakland, CA. Similar in size with like 4 times as much climbing. I am really sad about this experience, as I was excited to spend a few days climbing at High Point while I visit Chattanooga. I will never visit this gym again.

Yelp
Pretty expensive pass given how long it takes to turn over the route setting. The kids are a nightmare without any guidance from coaches on etiquette. The lead area is cool, and I honestly think the bouldering gets too much slack, the routes are decent and for the size of the gym there is something to be said about quantity. The walls outside would be an amazing feature if they were set and didnt have so many spinners. Gym is in major need of a renovation. Starting to get old and dusty. I think if there was a modern rope gym in the area they would quickly find the competition difficult. This place is a tourist attraction more so than a serious climbing gym. One particular event that turned me off is the a coach decided to close about 1/2 of the lead area for the team only to have 1 or 2 kids on the wall. I approached him asking if we could climb since the rest of the lead area was packed and was told no. I went to the front desk and was informed that the coach was wrong and could not close the area to guests. So the coach just lied, rather than sharing the space.

Yelp
This review is for customer service. Wanted to surprise my husband with gift card for Christmas. Went on-line, purchased card and gave to him. Wanted to purchase another card today before the gift card promotion ended on 12-31. Called the store (after several attempts calling, trying to purchase the first one and nobody answered and nobody returned my voicemails) and was shocked when a live person answered. The gift card purchase offer is ONLY for IN-STORE purchases. We live 40 minutes from HighPoint Climbing. WHY would I drive that distance one-way to purchase a gift card that I could easily purchase on-line? The employees are bound 'by my boss' NOT to bend on this rule. There are lots of climbers in our neighborhood and I will be telling them all of this incident. Not Happy.

Yelp
Loved the all day pass so we could come and go as we pleased without delay. Nice big facility. Great orientation and friendly staff. Great value for the money and my 12 year old LOVED IT!

Yelp
My husband and I stopped in on a busy morning during Spring Break. The staff was overwhelmed with customers but that didn't stop Gavin from making us feel welcomed and getting us belay checked as quickly as possible. We climbed quite a few routes and had a really good time.

Yelp
Let me preface this review by stating upfront that I didn't climb. I was there only as a spectator. This place is so cool, y'all. Of course I've seen the place, you can't miss it, but inside it's even bigger than you imagine it to be. So many spots to climb and wander about. It's awesome just to watch. They also have a cardio room and offer yoga classes, but clearly the star of the place is the climbing. The staff are super friendly and helpful. Brooks and Kelsey were especially a great help to the group I was with. This is a whole community I don't really know about, but I'm intrigued enough to maybe find out. Thanks for opening my eyes to this world.

Yelp
High Point Climbing and Fitness is both a great climbing gym & a good workout gym. To for warn you this place can get quite busy [between 5p to 7p]. I have come to learn that if you take the time to learn how to belay, you have many climbing options.   High Point Climbing and Fitness does have AutoBelay climbing routes where you do not need a partner but these are usually taken since there are only a few of them.   If you find that you really enjoy climbing and belaying, more and more of the gym becomes open too you and others who are less experienced wont be in your way.  If you get the chance to go at High Point Climbing and Fitness, I would recommend to visit the outdoor wall. The outdoor wall is really unique and very fun as well.   I highly recommend this gym as it is one of the best in the area. The staffs are very friendly and helpful. The walls are all graded from easy to difficulty. All age personnel with good health can have fun at this gym. Doesn't matter if you're experienced or not. I have learned that they also offer courses.

Yelp
If you've ever thought, "hey, I might enjoy climbing so walls today"... High Point is the place!! The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable and there are many, many different climbs you can partake in. Adults are welcomed to use the kids area which I found had the pegs closer together for an easier climb, but keep in mind the holes aren't meant for kids so your big feet will have a hard time feeling secure. There is an area for every skill level. Lockers are available (bring your own lock) and have a great time!

Yelp
High Point Climbing is Outstanding!!! They are for all ages and you're never to old too young. We did so many fun things for our 28th wedding anniversary and my wonderful hubbys birthday. I must say, the Climbing adventures really was the highlight. From the moment you walk into the time you leave the team there to train you( it is brief) the gear you get and the vast variety of Climbing options are extraordinary. Our son and granddaughters belong to the Climbing club in Memphis. Our youngest granddaughter is 4 and the oldest 7.5. They are scrambling up the walls like spiders, Pappa and Dedaw could be left behind. For the money GO CLIMBING!!! You are never to old nor to young. Once you pay you can go all day long. Leave go have lynch, enjoy more of downtown and the n go back and climb some more. Staff is super friendly, attentive not intrusive. They are aware of everything that is happening in their business. Truly our pictures do not do it justice, I felt like super woman at almost 60 totally tearing up a 45 foot wall to the top. Amazing, I can conquer the world totally will frequent this business over and over, quit possibly just become a member. It's so reasonable and you meet people at all levels. Thank you High Point Climbing!!! There are none better than y'all.

Yelp
Horrible customer service. No help. No staff on the floor to assist. Will not return.

Yelp
Joined high point 3 months ago - despite moving to Atlanta and not being able to use my monthly membership. My experience during my time varied. Sometimes the staff members were exceptionally kind, and sometimes, they seem so busy talking to each other you have to get their attention. As far as the climbing experience, I first went through training, which was fine, the training was quick and I was in a group of other "newbies" - my first day; they were so busy, so I was only able to do two courses on autobelay. They told us you have to take a test in order to do the other courses. First impression: Pros: fun creative courses, ways to climb by yourself Cons: poor and inconsistent customer service, and crowded. I returned another night, and it was poor timing I suppose because everyone was there and there was only two courses I could go to with autobelay. I waited around for people to free up a course, and no luck. Realizing this, I went to the front desk to ask about a belaying test, and I suppose the staff member misunderstood, because they just told me when the next class was and how much it costs. When I tried to ask about more details, the girl turned to another guy to ask the details, and he told me he was in the middle of a training and couldn't help. "It's fine" I said, I'd just call so I could try to climb some more rather than wait around for someone who knew the details. I went a few times after that, but found out I was moving to Atlanta for work. That's fine, I'll ask for a cancellation after my 3 months is up, so I called, and was told I had to wait until my 3 months were up, and then cancel. Ok. Another hassle but I guess I signed a contract so I would wait. Flash forward to the end of the month, I called and asked about canceling... I emailed the email on my membership dues asking how to cancel, and was told calling would be easiest, or I could do it online. I called and spoke on the phone with a high point staff member, and when I asked to cancel my membership, the service was prompt and easy, however. I was told the billing had already gone through and I could not receive a refund. I heard the team member on the other end of the phone talking to another employee when I asked to speak to the manager I could hear him asking if he should just tell me no. What kind of customer service is that? Luckily the guy he was taking to told him to take down my info. I understood the contract was an issue, but I was getting charged for a monthly fee + equipment that I wasn't using. That seemed odd. Within about 30 minutes, I get a call from a manager, named Ethan and he leaves a voicemail. I call back immediately and someone named Haley picks up. I ask to speak to the manager who I had already asked to speak to, and instead she says she's up to date on my issues and asked for my account information. I gave her the same spill and information and she just kept saying that I had membership until the end of the month because they already processed their EFT's and don't do refunds. That's fine - it's in the contract, I understand, but what about the equipment I'm not using and the fact that I called a month ago. She said she had no record of my call and that they put notes on the account if that were the case. Then I asked ok well what are the notes you have from the last call. She said "we don't have notes on that because you had asked for a call back". So I guess you don't take notes every call?? Obviously I'm upset by the fact that I tried to call a month earlier and nothing was done. And basically would have to pull up my on phone records to prove I even called because they have no record. But I'm mostly upset by the multiple times I have been treated poorly by staff, and the fact that even though the manager tried to call me, I could not speak to him. Moral of the story, keep documented records or your experiences here. Take time during training to get all of the questions answered, and don't opt for monthly EFT. Not only is their process not customer friendly, they will not go out of their way to help you out despite the fact you don't even live in the area, and depending on who you talk to, they all seem to say something different. I am deeply saddened I had to leave this review. I even called to let Highpoint know how upset I was about the process and customer service, but they seem to think it's only about the money for me. :( Wishing others a better experience.

Yelp
The place to go in Chattanooga for organized climbing. It's in a great trendy area of Chattanooga and usually very busy. Lots of spots to grab lunch or a snack before and or after. Great for kids and good exercise. They have membership options and birthday party options. Highly recommended activity for those visiting and for kids.

Yelp
Amazing Staff, very welcoming and friendly! Had a Great time crushing routes with some friends! I was from out of town and everyone there (patrons and staff were super friendly and accommodating). Super cool routes with a ton of variation and everyone was just crazy nice!

Yelp
We only had an hour since we got there late. BUT we still had a lot of fun! My husband and I thought this place was clever incorporating indoor rock climbing and a gym with activities for all ages. The people are friendly and extremely helpful! Be sure to bring a lock if you plan to use a locker! We parked at the garage which they do validate for the first three hours.
google avatar

Yelp
Pricey but fun for the kids. Great orientation to get you started - very necessary for the novice. Clean. They should expand the kids zone because it stayed busy even for a Monday night.

Yelp
Great first time climbing experience, easy to learn and fun to participate. You can rent the entire outfit and guide, easy and inexpensive

Yelp
The staff are cool and friendly! They're very good with big and little kids. They gave the tour and got us checked in quickly. The facility is clean and safe.

Yelp
Great gym for anyone from beginners up, plenty of space and variety so there's something for every type of climber. Stay fit and cross train with spin classes, weights, or yoga. The outdoor wall is spectacular and a beautiful addition to the downtown cityscape. Be sure to stop by after dark and see the lights! Now that the guys have acquired the old Urban Rocks over off Amnicola, you now have a membership for two gyms in one. Also ask about Lisa and Wills' climbing school if you want to get started or just take your climbing to another level.

Yelp
Took my kids here over spring break. They had a great time. We went for the afternoon and then returned after dinner. My issues are in regards to the SOPs with staffing. The girl went over everything in regards to the ropes and belays for the kids and then the staff leaves and I guess stays up front for their next tour / safety class. During our couple of hours there I saw a 4 year old struggling with the belay and locks and asked him where's your mommy. He said he didn't know. About 30 minutes later I watched a big kid jump in line in front of smaller kids by being a bully. I really think there needs to be staff in the kids area at all times to monitor safety and proper behavior.

Yelp
What a cool place to come and climb. I'ma start off by saying yes you have to pay for parking and you do get a discount if you park in the parking structure attached to the gym, but the discount goes away if you park there for my than 3 or 4 hours, after that its just flat $8. Coming from Tampa, FL this was amazing to see. This was similar to some of the gyms we have here in FL but just much bigger. Lots and lots of bouldering and lots and lots of top rope. My wife and I were super excited to climb the top ropes along the outside of the gym. These pitches were higher than we were both used to so it pooped us out pretty quick. It also got pretty hot out there so we headed back in, took a short break and went into "the pit" for some more high pitch problems. After a little more of that we looked around for some bolder problems. The rating system was something I was used to but a little different because they came in ranges, which I felt was fair to each route. There were lots of fun problems and challenging problem and its a shame we only had one day here, but we defiantly made it worth it. If this is your first time to the gym you must sign a waver and they take you on a little tour and share the rules with you. They also take this time to show you how to use the auto belay's if that is something you are interested in doing. The staff here are very nice and easy to talk to. If you are interested in doing some real rock close by than there are definitely people here who can point you in the right direction...thanks Jason. If this is your first time climbing there is plenty for you to do here. We definitely have some amazing gyms here in Tampa, FL but I am jealous by the size and all the amenities and problems at this High Point gym. It definitely got me craving to come back and visit Chattanooga again.

Yelp
We celebrated my twin boys 8th birthday here yesterday. The entire process was smooth, directions were clear, and the check in process was easy. We loved having our own party attendant- Conner was direct with the kids, yet so patient and kind. The facility is clean and well maintained. The adults and kids all enjoyed it and said it was the best party ever. We will definitely be back!!! I would also like to add that the location downtown on Broad St. is really fun. There is a great coffee shop next door, shopping, great restaurants, and several attractions nearby. You could spend an entire weekend in the area and never get bored OR spend the day climbing, taking breaks to grab lunch or a cool treat and get back on the boulders.
google avatar

Luke G.

Yelp
Great staff! Had so much fun with friends. Great clean facility. A bit busy on the weekends but what a spacious and great gym!

Yelp
Great for people who don't actually climb. We were really excited to check this place out being climbers from NC, but the routes truly disappointed us. They all seemed to be just reachy lunge type routes. Almost seemed like the route setters were all bouldering guys.... We are shorter and my boyfriend Jay is a solid 5.12 climber, but the reaches on a lot of these routes were simply just impossible for someone who is 5'4. The hold themselves were super polished and even the new routes didn't look as if the even brushed the holds off before resetting them. Little options for lead climbers. The outdoor wall was cool but the ropes were aged and weathered. Overall just disappointed with the lack of variety in routes and upkeep of the walls and holds.

Ethan O.

Yelp
We just happened to be staying across the street on a quick vacation and the kids wanted to check out High Point. My boys are only 5 and 8 but they loved the Kids Zone and some of the regular walls in the main rooms. Price seems reasonable especially if you have a lot of energy and spend several hours there. Staff was very nice and helpful.
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
Not bad, not great. If ur from out of town, a good place to experience...close to hotels, bars and downtown scene. If from in town, suspect the options in chatt town are better on good weather days. My kids enjoy themselves, but I agree with other reviews that it's all beginner or expert. If you're under 14 and better than an auto belay system, you're SOL. spoke to the employees about options, and they're position was pretty much, tough luck, sucks to be you....let me get back to my granola buddies. My kids have mastered options in two visits, so on to greener pastures.
google avatar

David A.

Yelp
Too expensive. 16 with my own gear is way too much. C climbing outside with sweet but a lot of the holdes were really loose. Then we tried to get Sport belay certified but the guy failed us because he said my hand went in front of the device. only reason i did that is only because he was in front of my device holding too tight and I had to keep jerking the rope away from the guy. Then when I called him out he said that didn't even matter. the only reason why anybody should ever go here is because they want to pay too much and take a picture
google avatar

Scott F.

Yelp
we visited High Point on a recent visit to Chattanooga and had a great time. The kids enjoyed both the kids center and the regular walls. Lots of auto-belay stations meant we were all able to climb.

Yelp
The absolute best fitness choice in the South! COMPLETE climbing options--indoor and outdoor routes, MULTIPLE bouldering choices, AND a huge area devoted to children! Add to that the fully-stocked weight-lifting and cardio rooms, the free Yoga and Spin classes, and available personal training, MAT expertise, climbing classes, and special events, what more could you possibly ask for??? Chase H. was right on target, while the "other reviewer" has a viewable history of slamming businesses that don't cater to his every whim and fancy. Make no mistake about it, the staff and ownership at High Point are committed to providing the very best climbing AND workout experience possible, and have totally exceeded my very high expectations. Keep up the great work, High Point Climbing & Fitness! @ThatOutdoorGuy

Suzanne S.

Yelp
Unique fun opportunity for kids & adults alike! Very friendly & happy employees! Haven't seen anything like this anywhere else. Challenging & fun!

Esin S.

Yelp
I disagree with the previous reviewer because I had to spend $20 for day pass with rental AND an additional $7 for parking every time I have been here [I am out town]. I enjoyed the facility but I was very disappointed after my fifth visit, three of which had happened two prior days in a row, they did not even consider counting my visits towards a punchcard. I wrote an email to the staff and only response I got was explaining "We do not refund day-passes from previous visits." As I explained here and also to them, I never asked for a refund and the punchcard would have only meant $3 discount in my two prior visits. But I got no response whatsoever to my explanation. I am not used to climbing community having such corporate-america attitude. Especially since a punchcard would have meant they make more money out my continued visits, I am not sure what to make of it. The only thing I know is happening is that they don't mind ignoring simple customer requests, because they have many "customers". So I certainly won't mind not being their customer. Unless you like expensive LA/NYC corporate gym climate, I don't recommend this facility. There are others in the region.

Hanna B.

Yelp
The best rock climbing place out there. They have a huge selection, from outdoor climbing, which is super cool, especially at night, indoor professional climbing, easier rock walls, and even a kids climbing gym attached. The kids climbing gym is super cool and even the older kids have fun in there. They have a fitness area, as well. If you are visiting Chattanooga, this is definitely the place to go.

Yelp
Our recent 2014 Sumer trip brought us to high point climbing in Chattanooga in a last minute vacation un planed. The high point team made it super easy to plan even on short notice. From Lisa and Wills planing and the expert guide service from Brian T it was perfect. They selected routes just right for us, and that includes the entire family( mom, dad and our two junior climbers 4yrs and 10yrs) Nothing was forgotten. All the gear, hotel and restaurant recommendations. Even a suggested packing packing list. Not only were they prepared for the expected, they also had a weather call back up plan of personal coaching at the state of the art gym. Our climb ( at foster falls) was picture perfect and nothing less then amazing. Brian was a exellence coach and had all the family involved. We had options from the easy all the way to the expert routes at our choice and Brian helped us through all of them. He was a very good with the children and I can easily say this trip works well for the whole family There's nothing better then to have the whole family instantaneously say " when can we go back to High Point in Chattanooga " only minutes after departing. Big thanks to Wills, Lisa and our great guide Brian for making a lifetime memory We will be back soon and can't think of a better place to be !

Yelp
Best rock climbing facility I have ever been to, perfect for an out of towners like me because I only had to spend 15 bucks for an all day pass and was able to take a break half way through to go to the aquarium or IMAX. The outdoor climbing wall is an unique addition and something I have never experienced before. There are also plenty of auto belays and bouldering stations so this place is also perfect for inexperienced climbers.

Josh N.

Yelp
I went to High Point Climbing to learn trad climbing this past August. After three days of outstanding instruction from Brian, I felt comfortable enough to go out and lead trad on my own, way beyond my expectations! High Point's lesson structure was perfect. We'd thoroughly go over a new concept on the ground, then rope up and immediately apply it to an specific climb they'd picked out for that particular concept. I was a little worried I'd be getting a lot of theory and not enough actual climbing, but by day three I placed hundreds of pieces of gear over a dozen climbs! Brian would lead the route, have me 2nd it to look at his placements, and then have me (top-rope assisted for safety) lead the route. Then, he'd clean my gear, and if he found a piece I could have placed better, he'd take a picture, and go over the placement with me when he came down. Great system! The staff are very experienced guides who know the area well. Brian would answer any questions I had in a clear yet very detailed way. His explanations were more about me understanding WHY I'd do something rather than just telling me one way is better than another. We met up with Wils at the High Point Climbing gym (amazing gym) and he gave me some great tips too. Before my trip to Chattanooga, I was debating whether I would just 2nd some friends on trad for a while, or take instruction. After taking the lessons, I can't believe I was ever debating it. Best money I've spent in a while.

Yelp
We live out of state...after a morning at the aquarium and a quick lunch, we spent the afternoon @ High Point. The whole family had a blast, and the children want to take classes to become climbers now!

Yelp
I was really disappointed in this gym. From the look of it online I expected a modern facility so the old concrete style walls with dirty holds almost as old as I am was kind of a shock. The setting was sandbagged and reachy, not ideal for a beginner or anyone nursing tendon injuries. The facility was set up to segregate the weak from the strong, and the "weak" areas were under-set. Hardly any routes below V4 or 5.10, and those were pretty hard for indoor climbing. They also seemed to be old sets, I cant imagine that they have anything close to a two month turn over. It was raining very hard when I visited so I never got a chance to check out the outer wall but the setting inside was so unfriendly I'm not really interested in going back. The general vibe of the gym seemed to be an old-school "only for pros" ideal. Get strong or go home I guess. They had a segregated kids area, which I cant comment on because I'm not a kid, but the rest of the facility was certainly not beginner friendly.

JJ J.

Yelp
Nicest gym I've been to! Lots of options for bouldering, toproping, and leading. For a climbing gym, they had a surprisingly good fitness/exercise area.
