My boyfriend found this hotel, when there was no availability at the hotel chain he usually books. What a quaint little find! I wasn’t sure what to expect when we first arrived, as it is pretty hidden among a somewhat residential area. But it was fantastic! Number one most important thing to me is cleanliness! This place is clean! I was impressed, and that’s not easy to do. I would go as far to say that every dollar I’ve spent somewhere else (and we’re talking about decades of 5-star hotels, $200-$300/night), was wasted on rooms that don’t come close to how clean this one felt! You sure can see the difference when a hotel is ran by the very people that have an “interest” in it. They are invested, and they treat it accordingly. We will visit again!! We even had a skylight in our room….do you realize how nice that is, to get real sunlight from above, in what’s normally a dark hotel room? 😍 Fantastic!! 👍🏼😁

This hotel is just beautiful. It was so nicely decorated, the rooms were so comfortable and large and the beds were comfortable. There were little areas for reading and watching TV around the hotel. They also made a nice breakfast in the morning. The garden was just so beautiful and a nice way to start my morning with my coffee. I would absolutely stay here again.

A bit pricey. It's unique. The interior is a little weird. Place was very clean. The bed was soft and comfortable. The room was pretty stuffy without AC. We think that they control the temp even though there is a thermostat in the room but we turned it down but it didn't help any. Breakfast was lame with weak coffee. Yes, this place is unique and has some character but we didn't think that it was worth the price. We probably wouldn't stay there again having experienced the place now.

We only got to stay here one night because we were just driving through town. The gentleman that owns the place does everything. He cannot find anyone to come work for him. He is all over it. The place is clean, well managed, and nice. It's hard to find hotels with beds we both can stand, but these were comfortable. He cooked breakfast for 40 people that morning and it was ready by 7 am. It wasn't just pastries; it was eggs, sausage, cereal, etc. I was impressed and if we go through this area again, we will stay here. I like to help those smaller businesses and this one is great.

Google
What a quirky, charming, fun place to spend a night. My husband and I had the opportunity to chat with the owner, and we found him just delightful and down to earth. The room itself was spacious and clean. It wasn't fancy, but we were good with that for the price. The courtyard was beautiful, and we thought the family room on our floor was really neat. Loved that you could check out movies.

Google
Quite a find. We quite literally stumbled onto Higher Ground and what a find it is. Beautiful accomodations, immaculately clean, comfortable beds, a wonderful night's sleep, and a facility that is a delight to explore. So tastefully decorated throughout. Did I mention breakfast? Home cooked sausage and eggs, OJ, and more. And the owners are on site seeing that you are delighted with your stay. Very nice, interesting people. It's worth ten stars but, alas, I am limited to just five.

Myself, my husband, my mom and her husband came to the chiefs vs titans game last night and stayed at this place... you want to talk about the best hotel I've ever stayed in! The gentleman at the front desk was the neatest and kindest man I've met that works at a hotel. It has some pretty cool rooms and was just so very cozy. Will stay here from now on, everytime we visit Kansas city, and need a nice place to stay!

Google
I brought my mother down here for her Birthday. She LOVED the hotel. She didn't have 1 complaint. I was a little Leary of the neighborhood, but we didn't have 1 problem. The area was nice & quiet, the owners were friendly, the rooms we're quiet during the night, & we both loved the history of the neighborhood. We'll definitely stay here again!!

Yelp
Went by myself to the Kansas City area to take in two Royals games an sample some KB BBQ. Wanted a reasonably priced room not too long a drive from the ballpark, and found this very clean and comfortable hotel in Independence MO. Private parking lot and coded entryways, quiet shaded patio. Moderately priced rooms. Just a swimming pool short of nirvana! My stay was during was the hottest week of the year, of course, but the air conditioning worked just fine, the bed was nice and soft, the shower pressure perfect. Books, sitting areas, quiet. Not modern, but tastefully furnished. All in all, a great find! And it was like staying with friends ... the front desk manager shared a backstreets route to the stadium with me, the trek under 15 minutes door to door! He also personally cooked breakfast in the morning! Can't wait to return when the Truman library re-opens!

Yelp
I'm very sorry to report that Higher Ground Hotel has closed. I don't believe the owner was very well when we were there last. They may have decided they just couldn't run it any more. (My speculation) Someone was there taking care of the place for the new owners. He said another company had purchased it. I hope it will reopen as a hotel or bed and breakfast. If the former owners see this, thank you for years of a wonderful place to stay when in the historic Independence area!

Yelp
This was a nice hotel. It was easily accessible with good parking. The room was very spacious. The water for the shower was hot but not steaming like I like to use. The breakfast was good, but I had the same thing the second day. I like variety.

Yelp
I stayed the weekend in this hotel, and I would highly recommend it. I stayed in a King room. It was very clean and nice. The Garden area of the hotel was beautiful as well!

Yelp
The hotel is very clean, cozy and quaint. I would call it a boutique hotel, but I'm glad they don't or they would charge $250 a night. There wasn't even dust in the corners or along the baseboard. The furniture in the rooms and around the hotel are antique or at least look like it. As are the artwork hanging on the walls. The hotel is also very quiet, I didn't even hear the air conditioner running. It appears to be family owned and run, as the front desk clerks said they lived there. They were a very nice friendly older couple. The person cleaning the rooms may have been family as well, all I know is that she is a meticulous cleaner. Friendly, affordable, clean and neat the stadium, this will be my new go to hotel when in KC.

Yelp
The reviews on the various websites were positive and it was $75 a night, so I figured why not. If possible, I do enjoy trying out unique hotels, as opposed to the typical chains. It didn't click with me, though, until I stood at the front door (locked at 7:00pm) waiting (for a staffer to come open the door and let me in) what this hotel was all about... After seeing the halo in place of the dot above the "i" in their logo, things started to click. Do not let the religious aspect prevent you from staying here, though. Aside from a non-denominational prayer on the pillow, there was really nothing else religious about this place. In fact, what this place most resembles is a re-vamped college dorm. The layout is almost exactly like one of the dorms I lived in years and years ago. From the room itself to the hallways to the common areas - it's a dorm that wants to be a bed & breakfast. The entire hotel was welcoming and pristine. Bonus points for satellite TV. Decent bathroom. Very nice yard area (though, while I was here it was covered in snow). The best part, though - and, let's face it, when it comes down to it, this is the part that counts the most - was the bed. It was a fabulously comfy and warm bed. Soft, yet firm. Big, fluffy down comforter. Four extra-large pillows. It was one of my best hotel bed experiences.

Yelp
Wow! What a great place to stay! This place doesn't look like much from the outside but it so lovely, immaculate and peaceful on the inside. It's filled with beautiful antiques and eclectic artwork. It's super quiet. The breakfast was delicious. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
I had reason to be in the KC area last week, and wanted to find a unicorn; a hotel close to where I needed to be, that was affordable, unique, clean, and comfortable. Higher Ground was exactly that. Well, not so much close to where I needed to be. I miscalculated that, but that's hardly a strike against the place. Heck, given the chance to do it all again, I'd still book here. The description of it being a boutique hotel got me interested. The insanely high ratings got my to click the button to book. This place deserves every star it's got. If asked to describe it, the best way I can is to sit you down in front of YouTube, cue up Pink's Beautiful Trauma video, and press play. This place is a time capsule of vibrant colors, Americana, and pin up nostalgia. The room was comfortable and well appointed. We had a mini fridge and keurig in the room. There's an on site massage therapist. But I didn't have the opportunity to visit them. The lobby is cozy. The business center is quiet, and there's a surprisingly well stocked guest library for guests who are looking for a paperback to pass the time with. Not being part of a chain, there was no trace of a sterile, corporate mentality either with the staff, or in the decor. It wouldn't surprise me if each room was decorated differently, with its own personality. When we arrived about an hour earlier than I had anticipated, the gentleman behind the counter joked that he wasn't expecting us yet. "We made 'good time'" I told him. He handed us two physical keys to our room, and a piece of paper with the wifi password, and code to the external doors. He also gave us a brief history lesson when we asked about the spire we'd passed on the way in to town. It's been decades since I took a civics class, but if I had the opportunity, I would return to Independence for an edutaining long weekend to take in the sightseeing. And that's thanks to the font of knowledge available from the man of many hats behind the front desk. If you're looking for a place to hang your hat for one night, or many, and are tired of cookie cutter, sterile, corporate hotels, please give the place a chance. It's unusual, friendly, clean, and well worth it even if you have to leave the beaten path slightly. Especially since you have to leave the beaten path.

Yelp
This hotel is very clean, which I appreciate so much. It has a very unique boutique style decor and feel. They use actual keys(not cards) for room entry. We were responsible for remembering a code to get in the outside entrance. That was tolerable. Breakfast was just mediocre. Our room was large and spacey but our friends staying in another room had a tiny space! We had a king bed with a window. They had a queen bed with a skylight. There was a space under the door that let hallway light and noise in at night. I could have put a towel there but didn't. There was not a mini refrigerator in the room. Those are my only two room complaints. I was highly disappointed that the whole time we were in town for the Chiefs playoff game, they did not plow the parking lot. There was a huge snowstorm arriving as we arrived. On Friday they requested we park in a specific area for plow purposes. When we left Sunday, still no plow. I asked the front desk about the parking lot situation, they did not offer an apology. They only stated that they didn't know why it had not Been plowed as of Sunday morning. I had to tell them we were pulling our vehicle to the door to load it, still no apology. The lack of snow removal was the biggest damper of our stay. I may come back, but not if there is snow!

Yelp
Started off ok, (rooms were nice) but we settled in and turned on television, couldn't get it to work, called front desk and 2 hours later ( and 12 times in & out) finally got fixed( in time to go to sleep) air must be on timer because both nights it quit working in our room and my elderly handicapped parents room. We try to use local business but next time will used chain hotel .

Yelp
We stayed here about 5 years ago and it wasn't too bad. This time it was bad. They gave us a 3rd floor room with a skylight... wow! it was noisy, the air was stale and dry. The toilet/shower room was just that. The sink was in the bedroom and put out a slightly larger than dribble. The room was smaller than most normal hotel rooms. Didn't give the free breakfast a try.

Yelp
Quaint and charming former church office building converted into a hotel. Rooms are larger-than-usual which is a plus. The only con was a Bathroom a bit small and no lid on toilet which means no where to put items brought with you- except floor :( Keurig coffee maker in room with nice choice of coffee pods was a huge surprise! Breakfast is served on first floor and more than adequate in variety. Very friendly and helpful staff made our trip enjoyable. Overall we were very pleasantly surprised with this little hidden gem.

Yelp
This is a pleasantly retro Hotel that is right across the street from President Truman's house in the heart of downtown Independence, Missouri. It is three stories with the first story being mainly below ground. Both the front door and the back door are code controlled. So you're safe at all hours. There's a cute little garden attached to this little Hotel that also has a code control gate. There's Breakfast every morning from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. We missed the breakfast so not sure what the breakfast look like. We got the king room with one king bed in it. And it ran a hundred and $105. I don't mind paying that, but for that price, the sheets, towels, and bed should be a higher quality. The bed and sheets were more along the quality of a 1 star hotel that you pay $50 or $60 a night for. Other than that I will definitely stay here again because the owners were lovely. They live on site and are the only ones that maintain the hotel. The rooms were very spacious. The bathrooms are a little small and snug but the best water pressure out of a shower I've ever had. There is also a Keurig in the room with a big nice selection of coffee pods. Parking was atrocious. We got back to the room at 11:30 and there were no parking spots left. There was parking available on the street but not much. Plus the spots available are meant for smaller cars, not so much an F150. I would definitely recommend this hotel though.

Yelp
An unexpected gem of a hotel. The owners could not have been nicer, and the clean, spacious rooms were a treat. I had only planned to stay one night, but decided to stay an additional day given how comfortable I was. Well done to the Higher ground Hotel.

Yelp
Strangely religious (which is not apparent from the website), but really a unique place. Nice front desk people, check out movies and board games, comfy lounges, yummy breakfast, and rooms with skylights! Problem is, is that the rooms are tiny, the movies are outdated and they don't like it when you take your food upstairs to get away from the blaring FOX news which they won't turn off or change the channel to something less...sensational.

Yelp
One of my favorite places I have stayed. Clean, quiet and comfortable places. Located in a neighborhood this is spotless and would definitely stay there again. It is not a chain and the owners are onsite and have done a great job decorating the building. Beds are comfortable and rooms are quiet.

Yelp
I stay at this hotel once a year when I have to go to Independence for school. It's a very nice, locally-owned hotel. The other students stay at chain hotels that are further away from campus, because the hotels advertise with the school. Higher Ground is a perfect, clean hotel with nice staff. I have had no problems so far staying with them.

Yelp
I had a reservation for August 21st (BTW the night AFTER the eclipse) and had to cancel, most hotels allow a cancellation up to the day of arrival. I had to cancel the evening before. The hotel unreasonably wouldn't allow a cancellation claiming it's not 24 hrs before (it was before 6 pm of the day before...so technically that is 24 hours before normal arrival). I am sure they were able to fill the room so they got my money and someone else's for the same room. I also had a room booked under a separate reservation for the following night, because I wasn't sure how long I would be in town, and I ended up cancelling that one too, only because they were unreasonable about the first reservation. I stayed at the Stoney Creek Inn instead and LOVED it, I would highly recommend it as an alternative. Yes, I understand that hotels need to fill their rooms, but if most hotels allow cancelling on the day of arrival, why is this particular hotel holding customers to a more punitive standard? I had not gotten a "great" deal or anything on some discount website that forces a person to commit early on. Just an unreasonable policy. Don't fall for it.

Yelp
Stayed just one night. Very quiet, and extremely clean. Even the corners on the floor of the bathroom were immaculate! Hate to admit it, but cleaner than my bathroom at home! Private parking was a plus as parking is at a premium in this part of town. I have an event in independence in august, and will certainly return! Ask for room 210. King room that overlooks the garden.

Yelp
I wish that I could write a 5 star review but like a previous reviewer it just didn't click with me. The staff was very helpful. The rooms are clean and large but I just didn't like the fact that codes were needed to get in the garden and the hotel. It didn't make me feel very safe though there didn't seem to be any need to worry. I was also able to hear conversations from other rooms. ( I hope the occupant can find the size 11 shoes she was looking for.) Despite all that the location is excellent for Truman history buffs.

Yelp
Glad I found this place on yelp. Impeccably clean and a unique atmosphere. Definitely can see pride of ownership in this business. Walking distance to the downtown businesses.
