10 Best Coffee Shops in Portland, Maine | Condé Nast Traveler

"As its name suggests, Hilltop Coffee Shop is a quaint, greenery-filled corner cafe atop Munjoy Hill . Located steps from Portland's scenic Eastern Prom, it's the Hill's only option for espresso drinks. The shop is especially busy on weekday mornings, filling with commuters en route to work, neighborhood moms with young children, 20-something Hill residents, and the occasional remote worker on a laptop. It also serves tourists wandering among the neighborhood's stores and restaurants." - Kate McCarty

This is a cute little coffee shop. We’ve been walking to it each morning for the past 2 weeks. Super friendly staff, great coffee, loved the donuts and the blueberry muffins, and planning to try their sandwiches. Too sad they don’t allow indoor sitting now but hopefully the Covid situation would get better soon. They have couple tables outside :)

Cute little coffee shop, the line was out the door and around the corner. They have a couple tables outside but right now there's no seating inside. Super friendly staff and some classy coffee options. If you're in the area and you have the time, stop in!

My favorite neighborhood coffee shop! Not only do they have a cute indoor/outdoor set up, the sweetest staff, and delicious toast specials (today was wild mushroom and scrambled eggs) the way they’ve navigated the pandemic has me a commited guest. They’ve adapted to the ups and downs all year with online ordering, a lovely pickup window, and are now welcoming walk-in service! Highly recommend at least stopping in for the most delightful warm buttered biscuit with jam 😋

Beautiful interior! I loved visiting this cafe and would recommend for others to try it out. My mocha was very good and not to sweet. I went around 4pm, but by then most food options had run out. Get there early if you would like to grab one of their goodies!!

We stopped in for an iced chai and a Cortado. Most of the food was sold out given the late hour. The cafe is charming and both drinks were very good. My husband really liked his chai. Next time, we will arrive earlier for the breakfast items.

The blueberry muffin is INCREDIBLE! YOU MUST GET IT! The coffee was great too- i got the dark roast. So so so good :) Great COVID service- they cleaned the pay station/counter between every customer and you cant even get within 6feet of the clerk!

Google
Really nice, trendy coffee shop. Space inside is a bit small but the coffee and pastries were delicious and at reasonable prices. This coffee shop has the best blueberry muffins I have ever tasted!! They are filling but not overly sweet like most muffins are so I would definitley recommend trying one of those.

Nice amount of options, coffee was good, staff was friendly and fast. It also seems like a good place to chill out get some work/reading done.

Yelp
Double Great... has 1995 vibes, is a tip-free establishment ("baristas are paid a higher wage and prices reflect this choice, thank you for caring"), doesn't have wifi (talk to each other! or, okay, use your hotspot, they don't mind!), offers seasonal house made syrups, does NOT upcharge for oat milk, offers those little signs you can put on your table that say "you can sit with me, I'm chill!" (which you'll appreciate when they're super busy... which they get, trust me), offers coffee for $4.50 to $5.50 and lattes for $7.50 to $850, is literally one of the best coffee shops to happen in the Greater Portland area in a long time. I wish they'd serve local coffee (they're using Passenger Coffee from PA and Verve from CA), but: + The space: it's compact, but they've done a great job creating seating everywhere they can. Loads of natural light floods in from the enormous windows. It's a very modern, minimalist vibe. + The staff: SO friendly. Everyone here is welcomed, and the thoughtful little touches of calling out your name when your drink is ready *and also* taking the time to chat with you as they hand it over just feels like a real, genuine interaction. + The drinks: the hot coffee is good AND the iced French Toast latte (made with espresso, maple, vanilla, and cinnamon) is amazing (though I'd suggest getting it with an extra shot if you like a more coffee forward drink). I'm excited to try a wellness/adaptogenic drink soon! A new fave for me, and with so much unmetered parking in the surrounding neighborhood, I see myself working from home here often! Cheers, cheers to you Double Great!

Yelp
I've really been enjoying my specialty coffee and tea treats when I drop in to Double Great! Sometimes I hanker for a late-afternoon pick-me-up--and take note that they stay open until 5, so it's a great option for that time of day. I don't usually like flavored concoctions of any kind, but they run some delightful specials: a maple latte, for example, or one with chili or mushroom somehow incorporated. Every single one of them I've had has been delicious, naturally and not overly sweet, and made with care to look beautiful, too. As others have noted, this is a no-tip establishment and the prices fairly reflect that. I might be dropping by at the wrong time of day but I do hope there might be a few more food options in the future; it's a lovely space inside and people clearly come to spend time there, but I'd honestly feel a bit weird taking up a table for long (especially working) unless I had the option to get something more. (And I hope it's a sustainable business model if they don't want to have food.)

Yelp
9/10 iced latte. It was such a great size and the espresso was so rich. I loved the set up for The Double Great Coffee! Plenty of seating with a selection of games for guests. Parking was super manageable when I visited, 12 on a Tuesday.

Yelp
A cute corner downtown coffee shop vibe. This place has lots of seating but is small so there may be room or not just depending on the time of day. I got a chai which was a mix, so if you aren't into mixes this might not be your spot. The latte was a very yummy flavor that wasn't too strong and creamy. The service was also helpful with the menu and quick with the drinks!

Yelp
Very cute coffee shop with cozy feeling and good amount of indoor seating. Ordered an iced maple oatmilk latte and service was prompt. Latte and espresso was delicious and smooth but unfortunately the maple flavoring was not added to my latte. Since I was doing takeout I unfortunately did not discover this mistake until I was already at work and was unable to ask for a correction or refund for the up charge. Despite this the latte was still delicious and am likely to return to try other drinks

Yelp
A wonderful and cozy neighborhood coffee shop. It's always bustling in here! The service is incredibly warm and the coffee and beverages are delicious. This is a perfect spot to hunker down and do some work (though note that there isn't wifi!) or read a good book. There's a decent amount of table seating, as well as some bar seating, but it does get crowded in the mornings and on some weekends. There's also a no-tipping policy, which is nice, since the prices are on the higher side (~$7-8/drink). Last time, I ordered the spiced cacao, which is on their wellness menu. It was absolutely delicious: spiced and warming and calming, like a lighter, less sugary hot chocolate. I can't wait to be back!

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place while searching for a new coffee shop to do some work. I really haven't been around this area in Portland but I've noticed there's a couple cool spots. This coffee shop was great with their lattes. It wasn't too much mocha for me. There's a couple of seatings and bar spots to do some work. This was also my first "no-tip" establishment which was very neat. One downside is that there's no WiFi. Good things I had my own hotspot. I'll be back if I want to catch up with a friend.

Yelp
Excellent chai! Some of the best I have ever had. Everyone working was very nice and friendly, they have a no tipping policy. The cafe has only a small handful of seating options. By afternoon they no longer offer food.

Yelp
After missing out on making it here opening day due to the snow storm we were having, we finally made it. Hard to pass up the opportunity to check out a newly opened coffee shop. Taking over the spot that formerly was Hilltop Coffee. Clearly we were not alone as every seat was taken along with quite a large group of us waiting/standing for our coffee. The line moved quickly but took a little while to get our coffee but understandable considering they are newly opened and only three people working behind the counter in a tiny space. One taking orders and the other two making drinks. They have stool seating looking out the window (maybe some good people watching or a good spot to drink and get some work done) along with some table style seats too. At the current time their menu is quite basic besides their Wellness Lattes that stood out to me. But even their basic/normal options sound good as well especially if you go with maple flavored. Not sure if they will eventually expand or do seasonal specials. I did end up getting their Maca Cardamom Coffee Iced Latte, it was different but good. Be forewarned it does have a touch of grittiness to it that some may not like in a beverage. My fiancée got their Iced Chai Latte and was very impressed, one of the better chais in awhile. We will want to return sometime to enjoy our drinks in house in the future when it's not as busy. Also if you want a bite to go along with your beverage of choice they have pastry offerings from fellow Portland business The Ugly Duckling. The only few small bits of criticism would be I wish their drinks could come in bigger sizes and they need better signage out front. As well along those some lines, get some logo branding on your cups just to do some boost in marketing for yourselves when people walk around with your drinks. Parking could be an issue depending on time and day you try coming here if you aren't close enough to walk as well but not an issue to walk. Otherwise great addition to the local coffee scene and look forward to returning.

Yelp
Truly an exceptional Matcha Latte. And I can be a bit of a snob about matcha. But this is one of the best I've ever had, and certainly the best in Maine/Mass. Bf said the same thing. Incredible service and ambience too! Will come back and try all their drinks!

Yelp
I'm writing this review mostly so that people don't make the same mistake I did... BEAUTIFUL coffee shop with some really unique drinks. I got a wellness drink known as "Blue Skies" which was absolutely delicious. I came in on a Wednesday mid-day, and the shop was quiet and spacious. I loved the atmosphere and they had delicious drinks made with care. The only problem is I came with the intention to enjoy the space and get my work done only to find out that they have no wifi network. I know this store is relatively new, but I'm hoping they do get wifi because it is the perfect space to sit and get work done. Even today as I'm trying to decide where to go to do my grad school work, I want to come here but it's unfortunately inaccessible! My hope is they get wifi soon, so I can rave about this place to others, because it truly was a cute, quiet, hidden gem space.

Yelp
Possibly the most delicious vanilla oat milk latte I've ever had. Super smooth flavor, not too hot to enjoy immediately. A little more expensive than most places but then I read their sign that they pay their baristas fair wages and therefore don't accept tips and charge a wee bit more for coffees. Happy to pay the premium price for a shop that has principles!

Yelp
Absolutely in love with Double Great Coffee! The staff is beyond friendly, quiet and comfortable seating area, and (most importantly) delicious coffee and pastries. I had the cardamom rose chai latte with a shot of espresso and a blueberry muffin. Both divine! The staff were incredibly pleasant and made us feel very welcome the moment we walked in. Ambiance is bright and airy. Everything one could hope for!

Yelp
This place is beautiful. The coffee is beautifully crafted and the vibe makes you want to sit down and enjoy the scenery or read a good book for hours. The service is great and polite. Once you go in you are automatically in chill mode. The music choice is awesome and thoughtful and it's just blocks away from East end park which is another great place to sit down with your double great coffee and chill. The coffee is delicious and feeds my soul. This is must when you're in Portland. Support local and enjoy!

Yelp
We stopped in two days in a row! Have to love a coffee shop that has maple syrup to add to your coffee - also has flavor add ins like cardamom! The croissants were excellent, The staff was fantastic and the shop layout was great, felt right at home! We'll be back again!
