Hilltop Fish Fare & Steakhouse

Food was really good. Service not as much, waiter seemed new and honestly did his best to make it right. Messed up our order a few times, again, he made it right. Atmosphere was quiet and no concerns. Varied dress from overalls to more business casual. Good mix of people. We were there in the evening.

Huge place with tons of seating. Diverse menu was very nice, also with the mix and match seafood items. The Lobster Ravioli was delicious. Grilled Salmon and Fried Oyster were delicious. Will return and definitely need to try the Prime Rib next trip!

Hilltop is a Monroe institution and deservedly so. Very nice building and restaurant, comfortable and classy. The food is always good and consistent, and the Prime Rib is excellent. Very nice well appointed bar in back.

I had the fettuccine alfredo. The sauce you could tell was original....excellent. The restaurant is beautiful with the q family, welcoming atmosphere. The owner, Spiro, even took the time to sit down and chat it up with my husband and I for a while at the bar. Highly recommend!

Thanksgiving buffet with hostess Anna was excellent. First class job Hilltop. Made it even better spending time with family.

Visited on a Thursday evening after dinner rush. Decent beer selection and the bartender was well versed on the options and allowed me to sample a few to make my final decision. Got the stuffed flounder after the bartender recommended it, along with grilled vegetables and roasted potatoes. Flounder was soft and flaky with a wonderful crab stuffing filling. Veggies were grilled and seasoned to perfection, my only very minor complaint there was that they added tomatoes to it and it took me a minute to figure out, it wasn't expected. Roasted potatoes were seasoned and cooked very well. Finished the night off with the seven layer chocolate cake. Was very tasty, not too rich. It was a tad bit on the dry side, I'd guess from storage in the cooler. Finished the night off with a mixed drink. Tab for two beers, mixed drink, and main entree came in just under $60. Cheaper options are definitely available, they had multiple homestyle plate options in the $12 range. Will definitely visit again next time I'm in town.

First time trying this place, and we will be back. Our server Bonnie was awesome. She was so friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed. The food was AMAZING. I had the delicious pesto pasta.

I’ve been going here since before the new building. Many years - many great meals -many great memories. I have always gotten great value for my money.

My family loves Hilltop. There's always something for everyone. The food is good and the staff accommodating. We love it. I was hoping to go again tomorrow, but it's Sunday.

We have dined here for lunch several times over the past couple of years. Each occasion provided a convivial experience with the food commensurate with the price. What's not to like? While not gourmet fare, both the AYCE and off-the-menu entrees deliver as promised. My kinda place. Looking for a straight-up restaurant that meets your expectations? Has my "Give 'em a Whirl" meter heading back for more shrimp on the AYCE bar. Mmmmmm!

I have been to Spiros quite a few times. I usually get a good meal. This time around not so much. I had the prime rib. It was cooked exactly like I asked. The prime rib was tasty. I can't say the same for my wife's meal. She ordered the crab legs MKT price 48.00 and they were not good at all. When the waitress came over to ask how the meals were we told her the crab legs were very rubbery. She said she would get the manager. When the manager arrived we showed her how rubbery they were. They didn't even make a cracking sound when you went to attempt to open them. We had to open them by trying to run the fork up the side of the leg You couldn't even pry them open. The meat if you want to call it that was shredded. The manager did offer to get us something else but we declined. My wife did finally get a piece of pecan pie. That was good. When the waitress brought over the check to my surprise we were charged full price for the crab legs. They also had an extra drink charge for a drink we didn't order. When the waitress came back I questioned the full charge and the drink we didn't order not order. She said she would ask the manager. When the waitress came back she said the manager said she we ate some that we were getting changed the full price. You would think the manager would have come back to explain. Instead she stayed in the back and sent the waitress out to deliver the news. What the manager never saw was the amount the of crab legs on my plate we didn't eat that I couldn't open either that the bus person had cleared. I would have thought the meal should have been free or at least discounted. We try to eat at local places instead of chain restaurants. If this was at a chain restaurant I'm sure things would have been very different. It's such a shame to loose a loyal customer of something that could have been handled better.

We live an hour away and always try to make an effort to come to this restaurant at least twice a year as it is one of our favorite places to eat! We've never been let down here. The food is absolutely amazing. The service is fast as well. One of our favorite places that we always recommend to other people!!!

We went last night for dinner and left disappointed. The front of the house staff couldn't be nicer and made us feel very welcomed. Our waitress was really nice and attentive. The problem was with the quality of the food. We haven't been here in over a year and it seems some things have changed. Dinner started off promising with quick drink service and great Caesar salads. The hot bread was lovely but it being served with dirty bread plates was not. My husband said his prime rib was tough but edible. My fettuccine Alfredo with chicken was bone dry, like it was made and sat for 20 minutes under a heat lamp. The strange thing was although the outer layer was warm, the middle was cold and congealed. The chicken looked like it was scraped off a grill also with anything else on there. I picked at it but couldn't eat it. Our waitress apologized and offered to get me something else but by that point my husband was done eating so I would have sat there eating while he just waited for me. Not exactly my idea of having dinner together. We got the check and we were not surprised to see the fettuccine alfredo still listed on there, because no offer was made to remove it although I didn't really eat it. I'm not going to have it out with a manager over 20 bucks but seriously, if people can't eat your food, take it off their check. We won't be going back. We should have known when we pulled into an empty parking lot that it was a sign that we shouldn't eat there.

Overall food was good. Service was good as well. Wasn't too crowded. Didn't feel rushed. Granted I went on a Tuesday. I got blackened prime rib. Didn't care too much for the sides. My husband got the shrimp scampi and also enjoyed it.

Server was friendly and courteous. Food arrived quickly. My husband's burger was dry and flavorless though. They did not ask how he wanted it cooked and it came out well done. The size of my grilled shrimp was not impressive. I can understand why the reviews are mixed.

The food was tasty, service was good. However, the prices are a bit steep for the quality of food that was served. The prices are rather upscale when the food is comparable to a place like Outback or Long Horns.

New to the area & wasn't sure what to expect, happy to find a new go to dining spot. The food was good, a few hits & a few misses, but still would have me returning! The hits: calamari appetizer was crispy & delicious, the NY strip steak was cooked to our liking and side dishes yummy. The cheesecake was creamy and def the dessert to get. The misses: shrimp cocktail was limp & watery, felt like it was poorly defrosted from the freezer. Would skip next time. The steak & shrimp scampi dinner was underwhelming. Steak was thin so hard to cook more on the rare side & shrimp, an addition of linguini would improve it. The chocolate cake was dry & only saving grace was stealing strawberry topping from the cheesecake. Service both at the bar & in the dining room was great, although bartenders were a little slow once we weren't the only patrons at the bar. Their bread served warm with dinner gets a special shout out. It's the closest thing to bread from NY/NJ I've found down here! They get it from a Greek wholesale bakery (Artos Bakery) in uptown area, but do sell the small loaves for $4.99 if you wanted to take one home! Feels more like a NJ diner then a fancy steakhouse, but I'll be back with the family next time and get a few extra loves of bread to bring home!

The service is always impeccable at Hilltop. The food is good and the prices are very reasonable for the quality of food that you get. Can't go wrong with the Prime Rib, Delmonico Ribeye, or any of the seafood specials.

Always love Hilltop! My kids always want to go. They love the buffet and the food on the menu. Sometimes it's really nice to have a great family restaurant, a Fish Camp, and a steakhouse all rolled in to one large restaurant that still feels like home. And the traditional old southern restaurants with great food facility, and friendly service. Lunch buffet is great for quick bite sit down and go. Dinner can be easy or as complicated as you choose. They keep a lot of stuff on the menu. The seafood is as good as at any beach place. Steak is pretty awesome too. The Greek and Southern food is second to only your granny's kitchen. Reminds you of back home.

I'm not usually a harsh critic, but this place is absolutely dreadful. Took the family out for dinner and every single one of us had gross food. My wife's baked potato was never washed, and had literal dirt inside it and on the skin. I thought it might be charred or something so I tasted it... nope, 100% dirt. (Added a pic of the dirt we wiped off below) I got the chicken parm, and it was teetering on the edge of edible. It was cooked fine, it was just very below average. I was hungry so I ate it anyway. The chicken parm is $30 btw. Then we got the "famous" 7 layer cake for desert. $10 for a slice by the way!! It was bland and drier than Queen Elizabeth herself. I'll never understand how a restaurant could put out food like this. Disgraceful.

I went to hill top this evening! The service was great but the food was not! I just told my server to take it away! The manager came back to my table, brought my entree and said " what is wrong with this"? I felt I was being attacked. She was belligerent and I didn't like it! My salad had frozen cucumbers on it. The broccoli was cold and barely cooked. The flounder(filet) had skin on it and was totally disgusting! She took the fish off check but charged me for broccoli ( I didn't eat) and the salad ( I ate but took frozen cucumbers off of it)! I won't be back!!!! And I will tell all my friends at the hospital how I was treated!

Door dashed. The club sandwich with a loaded baked potato was delicious. Ordered the blackened chicken Cobb salad and the bbq chicken salad. Both were delicious. Great ranch and blue cheese dressings.

I ate here a year ago and gave this rave reviews. Again, I am giving the highest rating which I don't often do. I had again the prime rib, the largest size, perfectly cooked with lots of flavor, horseradish sauce, and au jus as well. I ordered potato salad and pickled beets which I took home. The loaf of bread was excellent, although I suspect it was commercial, and there was dipping sauce as well with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. My iced tea (half and half) was delicious. It is very easy for restaurants to mess up their iced tea by using tea powder or letting it get a little tainted. My son had a steak and said he was happy with it, but he is not fussy about food. I noticed the patrons all appeared to be local which surprises me. Travelers should be flocking to this place. It is on the main road to South Carolina.

Portions are small. Definitely don't get what you pay for. We went with a party mostly senior citizens. Added gratuity to check most of the younger generation know to look for but most seniors paid double tip. They act like it was inconvenient that we needed an extra space for 1 more person when we paid extra for a room. Waitress made it seem like it was a bother when you asked for something. I won't be back wasn't impressed. But you can try your luck if you want.

Seafood was fresh, hot and very tasty. Service was very good. Hadn't been there in a few years and was very happy with the outcome. We will be going back.

Best place in town to eat! From burgers to prime rib! It's all great! The steaks are hand cut and beautifully marbled! If you like seafood, this place is a gold mine!

If there is an option for a zero, it would be too generous. took my family there for dinner and ordered broiled scallops. when they arrived they had a pungent fish smell and I tried them anyway and spit them out. They were bad. Megan, our server was incredibly sweet and offered a new plate; however, I declined. They actually charged for the baked potato and salad -very bad business choice. went to the manager and she said this was the policy and she would refund me if I wanted to be refunded.. told her to keep it, would not be back and went back to my seat. I actually told the waitress if she got the money back she could keep the additional money for her tip. Megan was great, the food, attitude and policy are to be desired. If you enjoy bad/old seafood, then this is your place otherwise don't waste your money. complete disappointment and unprofessional.

While in Monroe Hilltop is a must stop.In the four years we have been visiting our son and his family in Monroe I have enjoyed several mornings and breakfast of the buffet.Weekends they offer a few more options on the buffet including co.ham. On occasion I had an omelette instead of doing the buffet.Their pancakes are good also.The Sunday meals there are fantastic.The buffet on Sunday is a bomb.You name it it's got it.On Friday and Saturday Hilltop has a great Seafood Buffet.From breakfast to supper Hilltop has never been a disappointment.A good steak to just enjoying a good salad.Service is great from the time you walk-in the door till you pay the bill you are treated nice.

Went to Spiro's Hilltop Fish Fare for the first time today. The food was very good and the variety on the menu is outstanding. There is something for everyone here. The service was very good and my daughter got grilled flounder and grilled scallops. I got the senior portion of Blackened Flounder and fries Alaska whitefish. We both got. Baked potatoes which were very goo and hot when they delivered the food. We definitely plan to return again soon

Not bad restaurant- food was good but nothing spectacular. Only gripe was for the reservations and wait staff. We went here for a birthday dinner and granted it was a big group (25people) but we made reservations prior but when we got there, they didn't have any recollection of our reservations and we had to wait 20mins to be seated. Wasn't the best service (never refilled our drinks and it took forever to get our food/ orders in) but they did have 3-4 other big groups. They did their best and I can't be mad about that.

Love the place! My daughter and I had a daddy daughter date and we chose to go here for the first time. The food was great and the staff was very friendly. Didn't take long to get our food and there was plenty of space to park and to sit. It has two stories in this place and it packs up quick. A little high on price though, it cost me almost $100 for two. But worth it! They fry not grill you beef so don't get too excited about the steaks. I'm not a fan of pan fries steaks so I was a little bummed about that. The steak was really thin and over seasoned for the money. I was expecting a steak, but got a beef flavored chip. Everything else was good! Just don't get suckered on the beef like I did.

Food is substandard prices are extreme and the owner collects tip money that you pay to your servers that they have to pay to the bus staff and the bus staff never actually gets that money as the owner Pockets it and gives them a flat rate thieves

Excellent Friday night seafood buffet. Great combination of fish, flounder, talapia favas Had a nice variety of filet of perch, full perch. As I am a real salad Lady the salad fixes were fresh and plentiful!! Have three servings, fresh beets, steamed shrimp. Holly very friendly and nice waitress. Extremely hospitable.. We happened to be in the area (my husband's motorcycle broke down) so we decided to have lunch. Delicious Greek fajita with chicken and perch. Cool location; not what I was expecting for a strip mall. We'll likely stop again on our way to Myrtle Beach since we live on the other side of the city.

The food is always great here. I would give it 5 stars if they opened back up for Sunday lunch buffet! Shout out to Joel who makes the best ham and roast beef around!

This was our first time at this restaurant and OMGsh, we will def return. The service was great and the food was delicious. I had blackened flounder with pickled beets and collard greens.

Visited this establishment today for the first time with 5 other people. It was our intention to get lunch buffet. Upon our arrival, we saw the buffet didn't look appetizing even the slightest bit; however, we sat down & viewed the menu to attempt to give it a chance. Upon viewing it, all 6 of us realized it wasn't our cup of tea. We asked the waitress (who was super nice, btw) for our check to pay for our drinks. As she apologized, told us to revisit, we ventured to the front to pay for our drinks. The manager asked what happened and then proceeded to say "y'all sure were here a mighty long time to decide not to eat here." I responded with "yes, we viewed the buffet and realized it wasn't what we wanted." Her response was utterly disrespectful and disgusting as a manger.. "Yeah, buffet isn't everyone's cup of tea which is why we have a menu. We don't sell microwaveable food like all these other establishments." For starters, I own multiple businesses and would never be upset for a customer willing to pay for their drinks because my menu isn't what they have a taste for. Better yet, to bash other restaurants to make yours seem superior. I was super disgusted by her defensiveness over her restaurant as nothing negative was even said by myself or my party except that the buffet didn't look appetizing. I don't want to bash this business at all, but I would really recommend putting managers into an intense customer service training to learn how to deal with specific customer interactions.

I am very disappointed! This was our first time me and my family came to Hilltop. We saw the buffet and we weren't please with it, so we just decided to find another place to eat. The female manager with curly hair was so rude! She was upset that we didn't want to eat there. But we explained to her that the buffet didn't look appetizing to us. So we just wanted to pay for our drinks. As we were paying she said "well we are not like these other places that just microwave their food." And we said ok well we just want to pay for our drinks. As we were leaving she was saying have fun eating at a restaurant with microwaved food. Do you think that we would ever wanna go back to that place after someone acting in this matter. The disrespect from this manager was ridiculous and unprofessional.

The food and service is great. Our daughter goes to college nearby so we have a tradition to meet here for breakfast before we head back home. This time I had the nova scotia omelet- it was great w smoked salmon. My husband had the spinach and mushroom omelet also good. You get to choose shredded hash browns or bar potatoes- depending on your preference. We love this place!

I've never had anything but good service and excellent meals here. I've been coming here from the days when they were in their old building. They are a local icon.

Hilltop is one of the more popular local restaurants in Union County and it's pretty easy to see why. They offer a lunch buffet, which is personally not my type of thing, but to my understanding it is usually packed. The staff here were quite friendly and took the time to explain the specials. It seems to be a popular meeting place for local politicians and business leaders. I have not had the fish from here and cannot comment much on the food as I have only been here twice. I had the spring salad this time and it was full of fresh fruit, tomatoes, pecans, and paired with strawberry vinaigrette dressing. The restaurant separates with two different areas, to the right is the buffet side and the left is the regular menu. The general layout is comfortable with booth and table seating available. The place is very clean. Plus is that the menu is pretty diverse and you should have no problem finding something you like here.

Not horrible but definitely a hit-or-miss restaurant. Take a chance. They are a bit pricey

I've had mixed experiences at the hilltop. When they are on, the food is great and service is top-notch but when they are not on, you can wait a long time for your meal and the food can be marginal. I like the Hilltop's menu however, because it is very diverse and there is something for everyone. They have a nice selection of seafood, chicken, and other meat that appeals to everyone, and they do have a good selection of pasta dishes and salads as well. At their breakfast buffet, and I would not have it again, but I am not a big fan of breakfast buffets, and there's nothing on this one that makes it stand out. Having said that I've ordered their standalone breakfasts and they are good. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant and plan to eat there again.

Just had lunch at Spiro's Food was good but service was very slow Was disappointing!!!

Food and service were amazing! We had the chicken, crabcakes, trout, special, ribs, scallops, filet, she crab soup, and salads! Kristen was phenomenal. The best personality and insanely efficient. The owner was delightful and the service and food were an amazing addition to our trip. Thank you!

We stopped here for brunch with friends. I ordered the "Full Breakfast" which was plenty of food for me. It had one pancake, sausage and bacon, two eggs and a side of grits. My husband ordered the western omelette with home fries and it was served with a biscuit. We were surprised by the generous servings. The food was delicious and our server was so friendly. We will definitely be back when we are in the area!

Ooph. This place was a hot mess when I came in. I had heard it was pretty good by other friends, so it must be a hit-or-miss kind of restaurant. I came in with a friend for lunch, and we both got water. The water tasted like dirty tapwater that someone stuck their finger in. I ordered a veggie wrap for lunch with their homemade chips as my side. The waitress came over and asked if we needed anything else. I asked her for a side of ranch. Now let's talk about the wrap. They apparently feel that a veggie wrap means that they throw in whatever vegetables they might happen to have left over. I'm talking about uncooked squash, tiny chopped carrots, tiny pieces of cucumber, random pieces of onion, etc. I could have possibly stomached the wrap, if I had some ranch. She literally came back with our checks and brought ranch with her. She asked if I would still like it, and I said no that's all right thank you. Then I saw her walk with the ranch back into the kitchen, probably to give to someone else. Gross. On the plus side, the homemade chips were delicious!

A favorite of mine . Wish it was in Waxhaw instead of Monroe since I rarely go to Monroe except to come here! We need a place like this . Great Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner! Plus the oyster bar. Expand to Waxhaw guys!!!

Three of us went today for lunch and had Kimberly as our server. She was on top of it! Our drinks were kept full, the food was out quickly, boxes were brought out fast for our leftovers, etc... I hope to sit in her section next time I go!!! The food was delicious. There is nothing but great food and great service at Hilltop!

The best place to dine in Monroe. Awesome selection. They have everything. Huge portions. Delicious. Great service.

Sorry to have to come in as less than OK, but such was our experience for Thursday lunch. Our convertible car club took a nice back road trip to have lunch here. It had been highly recommended and lauded, so we were excited to be there. Southern buffet and yes they had fried chicken, fried fish, fried squash and the boiled cabbage and carrots, along with other items to round it all out. But is just was not very good. My wife called it a "miserable lunch." Lots of tables as they tend to a lot of traffic, lunch and dinner. Parking lot full and a line to go through the buffet so popular they are. So let's look at why 2-stars. Buffet itself tucked into a small area so was difficult to move around. Salad bar was lettuce and lots of dressings, quantity and type, but rather limited in salad add-ons. Rolls and hush puppies were at the end of the buffet horseshoe. There were small fried shrimp, like those you would find accenting a side salad. You needed a lot of scoops to get a portion on your plate and they were flavorless. The "raved about" fried chicken was no big deal, more comparable to supermarket deli fried chicken that anything special. There were small flat pieces of fried fish which were fine. The fried squash was very good. Dessert were a soon-to-be-gone tray of peach cobbler and then a tray of cherry cobbler which were both very pedestrian. Truly canned fruit and a simple crust. Runny and over sweet. Service was excellent. Those wait people hustle and have to cover drinks, busing and billing for a large number of people. DeeDee was a champ and a bright spot amid a blight. Buffet was $8.95 and beverages about $2 each. It was $22.20 for the two of us which was buffet and iced tea. I cannot imagine the steakhouse service. The locals like it...we did not.

I have been here many times. I went their for a birthday party tonight. Service was a little slow, but they were busy. I get that. The problem I had was with management. Three of us ordered the prime rib all rare. The other two got very rare, perfect prime ribs. Mine, however, was clearly not, I would say, at least medium. I sent it back, and what came back looked like the same steak. The manager was called and she came in with an attitude moved my plate around stared at it for a while, it was clearly brown as apposed the the bright red of the person sitting right next to me. She finially in a huff took it back only to return after everyone else at the table had finished to tell me that was the rarest I was gonna get and she was not going to give me anything I was clearly not going to be happy with. I understand how prime.rib works and there are only a certain amount of rare cuts and if they were out that's fine just be honest don't try and gaslight me. She did offer to get something else in a very rude tone, and when I said that everyone else was already finished, she wanted to argue that it was a rare steak. When I told her I was a culinary school trained chef, she turned her back and left the room. They need to do better.

Diner-style eating with a wide menu ranging from burgers to sandwiches to salads and several different entrees. Fried clams and oysters appear to be a specialty of the house. Walking in to the vestibule is a cooler displaying some of their specials - the chef salad plate must be a foot wide and appears to contain more "stuff" than lettuce. As delicious as that looked, I wasn't in a salad mood today. I went with a corned beef sandwich, which claimed to have a half pound of meat in it on grilled rye bread. It turned out to be less than that and had unadvertised (swiss?) cheese, but was still very tasty. I skipped the fries and had their potato salad, which was creamy and spicy and had some nice large chunks of potato. Unfortunately, they were out of spicy brown mustard and I had to settle for dijon. My coworker went with the chicken cordon bleu sandwich. Three thick slices of ham and cheese on top of a chicken breast that was larger than the bun. He had the fries and I was glad I skipped them because they were just the standard plain crinkle cut fries and weren't worth the calories. Both sandwiches also came with a small bowl of cole slaw (didn't taste home-made) and a slim pickle spear. The service was good and our server refilled our drinks a couple of times. The restaurant was a little on the chilly side - possibly overcompensating for the 80 degree heat wave outside. While we were waiting for the waitress to take our check, we spotted another server bringing out a club sandwich that was a tall stack of meat and cheese and veggies on toast, of course cut into quarters. It looked excellent and if I am back in the neighborhood and visit Hill Top, I'll have that. Excellent food and one of the few restaurants in the area that is neither Mexican (had that for lunch yesterday) or a chain like Jack-in-the-Box or Bojangles. I'd recommend skipping the standard fare and enjoy Hill Top.

In all honesty, Hilltop's a diamond-in-the-rough, gem-in-the-middle-of-nowhere, oasis-in-the-restaurant-desert-that-is-the-Monroe/Wingate-border sort of restaurant. Not only are its exterior façade, interior décor, and waitstaff surprisingly pleasing [and dare I say random for a place so far removed from Indian Trail and Matthews], Hilltop substantiates itself with quality Southern cuisine, a bustling-yet-kicked-back atmosphere, and overall service that exemplifies Southern hospitality. Monroe/Wingate residents ought be grateful for this eatery nestled right in their backyard. A pharmacy school student at Wingate University myself, I've now frequented Hilltop for all of breakfast, lunch and dinner, well as any alcohol wants/needs. Ordering from their menu (and a hefty one at that!) is always available, but it's worth noting that an EXCELLENT spread is offered with their breakfast buffet and then later with their lunch/dinner one. And as if Hilltop's prices weren't already a steal, daily specials are highlighted both as you walk in and atop your menu. Whatever you decide, it's rare to leave disappointed -- food taste and quality are excellent and portion sizes more than enough. Accommodations include 5 different main dining areas -- 1 of which can be partitioned off accordingly, another which is an upstairs balcony, and yet another that includes stools at their open-faced kitchen -- a large bar, and even a side patio.
