"A Book, a Bay, and a Beach For travelers who visit Hawaii and want a quiet, tucked-away vacation from the rest of the world, Hilo is a fantastic town to find a condo for rent and sunrises from the local beaches or to enjoy quiet evenings staying in. While no one needs to get lost in a book when there are so many beautiful things to enjoy on the Island of Hawaii, Hilo Bay Books compliments a tucked-away, quiet, beachy lifestyle perfectly by selling secondhand books (their motto is "get used!") to help you unwind and enjoy the time away from home."

It's tucked away, but an easy drive to our from the airport. There's a variety of books, and it's always good to check for gems. This author, A A Attanasio, used to love in the Big Island. I've hard a hard time finding anything of his older works. I still look, but was happily surprised to find some books from his Arthurian adaption in the '00s.
Hilo has a lot of used book stores, so always check in when you can.

I always find just the right gift book here, and plenty of others because I can't resist feeding my obsession!! Great selection of fiction and non-fiction, friendly and helpful staff, and used books in generally good shape at very reasonable prices. I also understand the owners are in the process of utilizing a new computerized catalog system, so an added bonus coming soon!

Really wonderful well stocked bookshop with friendly and helpful staff. I think it's the best bookshop in Hilo, and they have a really nice system where you can trade in your old books, cds, and dvds for store credit. They price fairly and there are always hidden treasures!

We're very lucky to have a thriving book store in Hilo. The staff is friendly and there is a nice selection of books. Amazon is getting more expensive, we can be less wasteful, and we can support local business.

We visited this bookstore the second we landed in Hilo. We've been traveling for 2 weeks and my daughter was missing her books. We picked up a number of great books at a very reasonable price (including a massive compilation of Edgar Alan Poe work for just $8). The owner was very friendly and actually treated us to a handful of complimentary tangerines/oranges as a welcome to the island. This is exactly the kind of aloha that people come to the island for - friendly people.
To the person who rated this business at one star, it makes me wonder what kind of behavior was exhibited in order to make the owner not want to be friendly. Comparing this small intimate family business to Amazon on-line store is an insult in itself. Smile to strangers and you will be surprised how many smile back.

Didn't realize they were under new ownership. Refused to honor Credit Vouchers for books sold to previous owners. Don't believe I'll be a future customer. Service level should be the same or better... not worst

Huge n vast selection. Just 90% of the time. Ain't got the books I'm looking for. Not they're fault though, we live on an island scarcely populated n from what I know, not much are book readers. The ones I do know though, KEEP they're books.

Very knowledgeable & helpful staff. They offer store credit for used CD's, DVD's & books. Store credit is also good at their Kona store.
Starting July 1st they will apply 80% if your store credit to purchases. And they will require 20% of your purchase be paid with either cash or credit card.
