Rooms were spacious and clean. Front desk we're extremely friendly and helpful with anything you needed. Pool is cold but clean. How can you go wrong with this view from you balcony Will definitely be staying here when we get the chance to visit Hawaii again

Room is bright, comfy and clean. And in general, despite on the fact the hotel isn't new - the vibe is great! Parking lots are enough, but if you arrive late, then sometimes you'll circle around. The view from window is awesome this is despite the fact that it is not on the ocean. It was the best business trip..

Location is great, so convenient to downtown Hilo. However, there are many homeless people in the vicinity. The view is breathtaking if you purchase a room with an ocean view, which costs more than staying on the opposite side. I agree with others’ reviews regarding the condition of the hotel. Our room was OK but it had stains on the carpet, wall paper, walls, etc. The mattress and pillows were too soft. The shower faucets are old and loose, not properly attached to the wall. There’s no daily maid service. They still offer the same explanation they did the first time we stayed here in 2022: due to the COVID pandemic, there’s no maid service. I really do not understand. At check-in, they make you acknowledge and initial that you understand how to use the bathroom faucet. I don’t understand why. They are in such poor condition. Overall, staff are pleasant. When we checked in, the woman at the reception asked: “checking in?” I replied: “good afternoon… how are you?” What happened to courtesy, especially when you’re paying for lodging? It appears that this hotel has seen better days. It could be much better if they invest in a much needed upgrade inside and outside.

Very friendly and helpful staff. The view from our ocean-front room is great. Smells a bit moldy in the room but still acceptable. Free breakfast is very basic, so don't expect much from it.

I will start with the positive sides. The room was clean. The view from the balcony was awesome. The view was of the bay even though it says the ocean view, but we preferred the view of the bay. The balcony was pretty large as well. There was no problem with parking and the location is great. Unfortunately, there are more downsides than this specifically considering the price of $250 per night, including tax and fees. First of all, even though the exterior is renovated and clean, the rooms are very outdated. It's dirty and not maintained. They desperately need to renovate. The included breakfast like other people have mentioned reminded me of my school days where we stayed in cheap motels. The front desk staff were not rude per se, but were not really courteous as well. However, the service staff were really friendly and happy to be there. I think it is a great idea to do the basic housekeeping ourselves, especially if it will help with the cost, but it wasn't a good sight to see. Early in the morning, the hallway was filled with trash bags from each room and some of them were very smelly. And finally we didn't dare to turn on the central air as the vents were disgusting, so please make sure to check that before you turn it on

Amazing location located in the banyan tree grove with thousands of birds chirping and singing. Our gorgeous room was in the tree line on the banyan side and we enjoyed bird watching from our balcony. Our room was refreshed every other day and the light breakfast and free gifts were a nice perk. The cappuccinos they make at the bar are strong and tasty and go well with the baked goods that they offer at the complimentary breakfast bar. Hilo is a great place to base your stay. It is within an hour drive to many must see places like Volcanoes NP, Mauna Kea summit, and rainbow falls.

Perhaps we got lucky: our fifth floor ocean view room was clean and well maintained. We also did not have noisy neighbors. The beds and climate control worked fine so we all got good sleep and woke up early enough to enjoy the sun rise. The only complaints: the bath tub spout needs repair and there was not much offering at the complementary breakfast. The area was very dark at night so it limits what you can do. However I would definitely consider staying here again.

We live in Kailua Kona and stay at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel every year in December for our Anniversary.|Pros: Great location, friendly staff, solid building (very quiet) Beautiful views, plenty of parking & Housekeeping service upon request. |Cons: I'm a professional Housekeeper, the rooms need a good detail cleaning. Bed & Pillows where hard and not comfortable. The dated room has all the basic amenities but nothing more. If you are going to advertise a free continental Breakfast with Tropical Fruit & yoghurt as part of the offerings, then for goodness sake have them available. Apples and sticky oatmeal doesn't cut it. Papayas are so cheap and tasty, why aren't they offered. Either offer a decent light Breakfast or nothing at all so Folks can plan for that. Most people fly thousands of miles to come visit Hawaii and stay at your Hotel, give them good memories instead of Frustration.

Yelp
Final verdict: Happy with the room, the awesome view was a bonus. Would stay again. The Good - I paid extra for the balcony and bay view ( the Banyan view room cost less) I would eat my meals on the balcony and look at the bay ( and there is coconut island) - Plenty of room, in the room. I traveled solo, but if a family of 4 was traveling, this large room is useful ( think, 4 suitcases, people packing and unpacking) - free breakfast. delicious. - elevators. I am use to smaller motels where you the stairs are the only option - The bed was more comfortable, then the bed I had at Bay Reeds hotel, also in Hilo The bad. - While the view of the bay is great. When I stayed at Bay Reeds, I could hear the waves through my window - no microwave. Bay Reeds hotel has a microwave, and full size fridge.

Heather K.

Yelp
Upon arriving, you are greeted by a very nice lobby, bar, restaurant and view of the ocean. You need your hotel key to operate the elevators. This is convenient and nice as it deters anyone who isn't staying in the hotel to go up to the floors. I have mixed emotions about our stay. Pros: - The lobby is gorgeous. It is very up to date and has fresh flowers delivered to spruce up the room. - There is a bar on the first floor of the hotel. It has plenty of seating, and some nights they have live music. - The view of the ocean is beautiful. You see coconut island right in front of you which is fun to walk over to. - We booked through Costco so we had a $100 credit for a meal at their steakhouse. Cons: - The hotel rooms are very basic and old. They definitely need a good remodel. Upon entering our room, there were nuts and shells in the corner? The carpet is very old and clearly had not been vacuumed well. - Our toilet barely worked in the sense that the arm lever wouldn't close fully so every time you flushed the toilet, the water tank would run until you stuck your hand in the back and fixed the stopper. - There were a lot of fruit flies in the bar. This isn't necessarily the bars fault, and as I traveled to other places on the island, fruit flies were everywhere so maybe this is a normal thing on the island? I just don't like fruit flies in my drinks and it happened quite often. - The continental breakfast is a joke. Each room gets 1 to go box for their food. This isn't necessarily a bad thing because you can fill it as much as you want and continue to go back for more food. However, the "breakfast" is nothing more than 2 types of croissants, an apple or orange, and premade oatmeal with raisins or brown sugar. That is all. There is coffee and juice. But they water down the juice so it's water with a hint of orange. Overall, this wasn't a bad experience, it just wasn't what we were used to. We wouldn't necessarily stay here again, as we like to vacation a little more boujee-r but if you are looking for a place and don't have as high expectations like we do, it would suffice. It seems like the hotel spends most their money on making the first floor modern and up to date so it looks nice to the eye, but completely ignores the need to remodel and bring their rooms up to date.

Yelp
What a good night's sleep I got here! It's been over 10+ years since I last stayed at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel in sleepy Hilo town. Yes, at night in Hilo, you can probably hear the lovely sounds of the croqui frogs. Some folks don't like the noise, but as for Bruddah man, I don't mind it at all. When I pulled into the hotel parking lot (in the early evening), I could hear the chirping noises of the croqui frogs. As for my accommodations - My hotel room was nice & comfy. Looks like the Hilo Hawaiian hotel has done a great job with securing the building, as well as maintenance of the hotel room. The hotel room had your standard amenities - coffee maker, refrigerator, hair dryer, large screen T.V., iron and ironing board. The hotel also provided soaps/lotions/shampoo/body wash. In the morning, there was a complimentary continental breakfast provided by the hotel. The simple continental breakfast consisted of - fresh fruit, oatmeal, pastries, juices, & hot coffee and tea. The room rate was very reasonable at ($169.15) per night, and after adding all the various taxes, the room was just under ($200.00 bucks). The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel also had a Kama'aina Special - No Resort Fee. All you have to do when checking in is provide a valid Hawaii ID/Driver's License for proof that you're a Kama'aina. Parking is free, but it's first come, first serve basis. I had a great night's sleep at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, no road noise, or honeymoon noises (see my review from the hotel I stayed at in Kona, Lol!). The bed was very comfortable, and there were many electrical outlets available so you could charge your electrical devices. I would say the highlight of my hotel stay was the spectacular ocean view from my hotel room! If you take a quick look at my pics, I'm sure one can appreciate this hotel.

Yelp
It's been over 10 years since I've stayed at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. I was recently there for a one night staycation. There has been a major update renovation to their rooms! The beds especially are so comfortable and the rooms clean and inviting. A Continental Breakfast is now served between 6:30am to 10am. Although it's limited to coffee, fruit, juice, pastry and cereal. It's a thoughtful addition! Thr staff of the hotel is very welcoming and helpful. The cocktail bar & lounge has a very good happy hour with very reasonable prices. The continental breakfast is also served here and there is a nice ocean view. With Kama'aina (local resident) rates, it is a very affordable. The location on Banyan Drive in Hilo is convenient. Highly recommended!

Yelp
10/11/24 Hilo Hawaiian Hotel 71 Banyan Dr Hilo, HI 96720 I stayed there for six nights in October for a high school reunion. This is the place where the locals stay when in Hilo, it's lower end than it's neighbor hotel but not by much in my opinion and a better value. There is ample self parking. There is a small unattended swimming pool at the back of the property. There is a well equipped modern fitness shack outside the front of the hotel on Banyan Drive. My Banyan view room was spacious with a workstation desk, cable TV, coffee maker and mini refrigerator. There was no microwave. The AC worked as expected. The only thing that didn't work was the AC outlets in the lamp bases that did not make contact to my plugs. The internet WiFi worked well and was on the slow side but I'm spoiled by my fiber internet at home. Room service was every other day which is fine with me. The staff was friendly and helpful. The included Continental breakfast was feeble with two bakery selections, one or two fruits, inconsistent oatmeal, juices and coffee. But it's better than nothing. A solid hotel and good value. Definitely will stay here again.

Yelp
It's a nice hotel but I'd say the three and a half stars given by Yelpers is about right. The lobby is very attractive. Open aired from front to back. Very nice staff, from check-in, to the bartender, to the bell hops. It's all self parking, which is fine, especially because there's no charge. That's rare! And they have both outdoor and underground parking. They also have coin operated clothes washers and dryers. The pool is decent, nothing special. The view is nice... sits right along Hilo Bay. It's walking distance to a few restaurants and parks. But mostly you need to drive. The rooms are spacious and clean. That's probably the most important thing. And we had a room with a view of the bay, so can't complain about that. The serve "continental" breakfast, but don't get your expectations too high. It was coffee, tea, juice for drinks. Apples, banana bread, and some pastry for food. Oh, and some very watery oatmeal that I think they mis-cooked? Overall for the price and amenities, it's a nice place.

Yelp
Visiting Hilo on a business trip, first time in a long time and we decided to stay at Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. I was surprised it has been a while staying in a hotel on the islands and was quite surprised that they had to bell service and rooms are not cleaned or service daily we arrived on the 25 of July and was told by the front desk they were not cleaning the room if you run out something let the front desk know other then that they will come in on the 27th to empty your trash and change towels only. The hotel is okay, front desk staff one person was not the friendly maybe she had a bad day. Parking they have 4 different parking lots and the one on the side the same level as the hotel is very tight, so if you don't want nicks on you car better to park in the lower parking stalls. The Continental breakfast was ok, but if after eating there by the 3rd day found out they would discount your bill $5.00 total of $10.00 for a couple in a room off the restaurant bill if you want eat a set meal. Which we did and it was much more enjoyable. And less crowded, if there is no room you can take out your continental breakfast to your room or eat it in the lobby.

RJ D.

Yelp
Nice enough hotel, well-located & priced, and clean. But I'm perplexed as to why management even bothers to offer the continental breakfast, which is the worst (no exaggeration) I've ever seen offered at any lodging, complementary or not. Each guest is given a "bento box" -- a plastic to-go container, so wasteful -- and the buffet breakfast consists of stale pastries and mush oatmeal slopped onto a big cafeteria tray. After sampling on the 1st day, we opted to just skip everything but the juice and coffee on subsequent days. I'd be embarrassed to offer this, if I was hotel management. They'd be better off not doing so, imo, instead of leaving such a lousy impression on their guests.

Wes K.

Yelp
Spent the weekend at the hotel. Check-in and check-out was only a few minutes. Free water bottle with filtered water machines in front. Elevator is secured with room key to access. TV reception was very sharp with a lot of channels. Room AC was good.

Mason D.

Yelp
One of just a few hotels in the Hilo area. While it isn't newly remodeled as the Naniloa is, we enjoy ourselves every time we stay here. The workers in all departments are fantastically friendly and capably accommodating. The bar serves early morning coffee and a continental breakfast. The bar is well stocked and the bartender makes great bloody Mary's. And to top it off, it's within wary walking distance of Hilo Bay for the state canoe races.

Nathan K.

Yelp
There aren't many choices for hotels in Hilo, but I always enjoy staying at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel for its location, friendly staff and now updated rooms. Nothing fancy here, just a warm and inviting atmosphere, nice views of Coconut Island and the bay, and walking distance to Queen Liliʻuokalani Gardens. They have a great WSW | Whiskey, Steak and Wine restaurant in the lobby. Solid food and service and open for breakfast and dinner. This property has plenty of parking. Check out the Hilo Hawaiian if you're planning to visit Hilo.

Yelp
Burr. Bed next to the air conditioning wall. Very noisy and being blown by cold air all night makes sleeping uncomfortable. If you don't have air conditioning, the room get stuffy. Great view of water outside. No sunrise. Cloudy skies outside. The faithful early birds (people) drive, park and do their walk in the morning. The room is bright with lots of lights. Hugh TV. The night of the Big Brother reveal that named Jag, the first Sikh to win.

Yelp
The lowest piece of trash I've ever encountered while traveling. How they are claiming a 3-star hotel rating is beyond me. Read on. Even though they claim to be a smoke free venue, apparently you can smoke on your balcony at the 8th floor, and the stench travels everywhere. They failed to mention this until I called front desk to report a smoker in the adjacent room. Soon it became a health issue, making it impossible to stay there. Their supposedly best room is an abomination, just look at the photos. Missing door lock/block, stains on the foot beds, chair. This ain't the mainland, but nothing about it says 3-star hotel. Employees seem to be acquired at a discount store: zero accountability, absent soft skills. Informing them about all the issues, and letting know that we are not going to stay, prompted no apology. And to surprise of no one, they are refusing to refund the payment. Be aware.

Nat N.

Yelp
I needed a room for just one night, and to be honest, I chose this hotel because it was slightly cheaper than the Grand Naniloa. But it all worked out and I have no complaints at all about the hotel. Check-in was a breeze - the lovely wahine who assisted me at check-in was very friendly. We each received a plastic water bottle for free, and there was a water cooler at the entrance for us to fill up our water bottles. Hooray for free filtered water. Our room was clean and it came with shampoo, conditioner, soap, coffee maker and two packets of coffee (one caffeinated and one decaf), paper coffee cups, hair dryer, two sets of towels, and a nice flatscreen TV with spectrum cable. The room was equipped with wi-fi, however, I seemed to have trouble with the wifi and just stuck with my regular cell service. The only thing I didn't like about my stay was the bird droppings on our rental car that greeted us the next morning. TIP: if you're parking your car here, park in the underground area so you don't get bombed like how we did! Otherwise, we had a very lovely, albeit short stay here.

B T.

Yelp
Made it with our 3 young children, checked in and bell service took our things to our room. Bell hop was great and we had a lot of stuff. After unpacking and settling in we decided to hit the pool. We noticed our key didn't work and went to the front desk. The valet had accidentally placed us in 832 instead of 823. Honest mistake I don't blame the bell. We thought no big deal, but they insisted we move. They had placed us in an ocean side instead of garden side and wouldn't rectify their mistake by letting us stay in the room they gave us. The twin 2 year old kids for the rest of vacation keep asking "where did the ocean go?" Completely ruined our trip I wish I could just go home and leave this hotel. Horrible way to start a trip with your family. Don't come here. There is no costumer service.

John P.

Yelp
We always enjoy staying here when in Hilo. Great location for exploring the East Side of Hawaii Island. The hotel has undergone a few improvements but is showing it's age. Unfortunately, the last time I booked a room I thought I was speaking directly with the hotels reservation people but was speaking with a third party reservationists. The number was associated with the hotel on the internet. Apparently, it was Expedia.with did not disclose that's who they were. Found out when I arrived at the hotel. Ended up paying more than I should have. Hotel kindly upgraded the room though. When booking call the hotel direct for reservations.

Steven H.

Yelp
Easily one of the worst hotel stays I have ever experienced! Let me start with the small things like the black mold, the wallpaper coming off of the wall, the shower curtains that was too short so it soaked the floor (probably part of the mold problem), the $30 a week charge for the microwave (mine was refunded because they charged me daily instead of weekly), being bit by fire ants on my 6th floor balcony after my room was treated during my stay (great timing hotel staff). Now the big stuff, house keeping walking in on my wife while she was in the shower, the employees children running around like feral cats in the hotel pool area, and the extreme incompetence displayed by all on the property. The employees here will give you a hard time if you're white and double down on that if you are military. Stay away at all costs. There has to be better places to go other than this "hotel". Don't forget about the homeless problem next door in the condemned hotel under construction where there was a shooting during our stay. The only reason this place gets even one star from me was the restaurant which had mediocre food but at least service with a smile unlike the front desk and a where else on this property.

Yelp
This could be the perfect place for your vacation, or it could be very disappointing depending on what you value. Pros: GREAT location. The bay view rooms have a balcony overlooking Hilo Bay with a beautiful view of Mauna Kea across the bay. Walking distance to a pretty little island where you can swim, watch sea turtles or just enjoy the water. Next to a serene Japanese-style garden, and walking distance to a couple of good places to eat. Rooms are spacious, and easy drive to Volcano National Park and many beautiful beaches. Common areas are beautiful and well-maintained. Parking was easy. Cons: Rooms need updating. Wallpaper is peeling, and the furnishings and trim seem...classic. Room lighting isn't great, very old style lamp-dominated lighting. I found the pillows uncomfortable, but the main problem there is lack of variety, they were all the same overstuffed style. No door separates the sink area from the main room, and there is no separate lighting for the toilet/shower and the sink--if you need the toilet light on in the middle of the night, you might wake others in the room. Smoking is allowed on the balcony, which was a huge minus for me; several times I would be enjoying the great view and get hit with a plume of smoke from the balcony below. If you can live with the cons, this is a great home base for exploring Hilo and the surrounding areas. I really enjoyed my stay.

Yelp
This hotel is waterfront and the views from the room was terrific. The place was clean and has a terrific on-site restaurant; however, it goes downhill like a rollercoaster. Here's the problem - you fly 2500 miles to Hawaii and drive 2 hours from Kona to Hilo (so you are very tired). You are charged $351/night and not informed that starting at 6:30 am the next morning the finish line to the running race is outside your window and results will be announced on a megaphone until afternoon. It would have been nice to be informed upfront or perhaps offered a different room that was quiet when I checked in. I complained and was offered a free room upgrade on my next visit. Why would I want to come back when I had a lousy experience to begin with? Definitely not the way to resolve a complaint - try to coax another sale. Maybe I am out of line but how about giving a partial credit to the $351/night charge and charging me the non-Oceanview rate or comping for an onsite restaurant visit? I'll stay at the Doubletree my next visit. Note: This review is my own. I am an actual customer who stayed between 3/16 through 3/18 and I received nothing in return for this review other than a free room upgrade on my next visit. I won't be accepting it...obviously.

Yelp
We had a great view from our suite at the Hilo Hawaiian. In fact we had the same room from a year ago. With covid winding down you would expect the service to be back to pre covid standards. Well you still have to call to get towels. They request that you put the trash and the used towels out side your door. We were told that house keeping will not clean your room unless you stay there for five days or longer. They were ants crawling on the dining table when we entered the room. On the brighter side, Kinan from bell services was friendly he delivered our suitcase, Ice chest and other bags from our shopping at KTA. He was fast and efficient. He had mentioned that they arr short staffed in house keeping. Hope the situation will improve before our next Big Island visit.

Barbara L.

Yelp
This hotel needs updating and a thorough cleaning. The refrigerator was rusty, the tub didn't drain well and had no grab bars. The toilet seat was scratched and looked dirty. They only offer housekeeping every other day and then didn't even do our room on the day they said they would. Every time we requested towels or paper goods they took a long time to bring them. There was not enough parking, regular or handicapped. There were not enough water stations for a hotel that large. The ocean view from our room was nice. The information from our travel agent said two people would get a complimentary, continental breakfast and any others would have to pay $10. When we went to breakfast they only allowed one complimentary one and the limited food available was not worth $10. (They didn't refill serving dishes so there were just a few orange slices, one apple, some mini croissants and a few small slices of banana bread left when we got there.) When I checked out, the clerk asked how my stay was. When I replied "Disappointing" she didn't even want to know what was wrong.

Jarod H.

Yelp
Recommended. Pro tips before we review: -Fitness/Weight room available in the kiosk hut fronting the hotel. Need key card for entry. -Ice cold water dispenser available in the fitness room, as the one in the lobby isn't as cold. -Pool "technically" opens at 11am, despite the 7am open time posted on the hotel website. -Room towel and toiletry restocking services are only available by phone. No daily room cleaning. The hotel overall is great for the price paid. Services are limited due to the staffing shortages. However, the staff friendliness and hotel room views are excellent. Really had a great stay here and would stay again one day. The area neighborhood has its share of homeless walking around, but unlike Oahu, they don't bother you directly by walking up to you and hassling you. Otherwise, the area is good. All in all, I recommend to stay at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.

Johnelle C.

Yelp
I really enjoy staying at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.  This was our second time, and it didn't disappoint.  I love the view from our room overlooking Hilo Bay.  The rooms are very comfortable, and the staff are helpful.  What we can't discount is the location, right smack center of Hilo where all the action happens.  It's a 4 minute drive to Big Island Candies, 5 minute drive to Two Ladies Kitchen, a 13 minute drive to Panaewa Rainforest Zoo, a 25 minute drive to Akaka Falls, and a 40 minute drive to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.  The rooms have a coffee pot, mini fridge, and are very clean.  Kamaaina rates are the best here too.  If you have to pay a little extra for the Hilo Bay view, I think it is worth it.  There is nothing like waking up in the morning and seeing Hilo Bay with a backdrop of Mauna Kea.  Priceless.

Stephen W.

Yelp
We had a rough start to our stay at the Hilo Hawaiian hotel and I gave it 3 stars. After a full week staying there, I feel fully justified in changing the rating to 4 stars. During our week, we found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. When we needed something like towels or the phone did not work, someone came within minutes. The lounge serves good food and has reasonable prices for drinks. The location is excellent for getting to downtown Hilo in 5 minutes. The adjacent park is great for strolling. The views from the hotel are incredible. The hotel has ample free parking. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and if we went were to visit Hilo again we would definitely stay here.

Amanda N.

Yelp
DONT COME HERE!!! IM WARNING YOU!! I'm currently staying here for my mom's bday vacation and it's so bad. When I was trying to sleep last night, I got in bed and put my legs in the blanket cover and all of a sudden it started itching and it kept itching. It's so bad that it popped up a bunch of spots. Please see the picture below.

Yelp
It feels so great to travel again, even just to island hop. We visited Hilo in June for Hilo Brewfest and Hilo Beer Week and decided to try staying at a different hotel and were glad we did. The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is on Banyan Drive next to other popular hotels and Queen Liliuokalani Gardens. This area is equal parts beauty and depression with amazing places to walk and explore, but also issues arising from nearby problem areas. As far as convenience goes, this hotel is just a quick Uber/Lyft ride to downtown Hilo and the surrounding area. The hotel has been recently remodeled, which shows in the common areas and rooms. It's not frills but also very clean and nice. Cleaning service is not offered daily as of this writing, you request new towels or other items from the front desk during your stay. Kama'aina discount only applies to the mauka facing rooms, which is beautiful in its own right but there is an issue with a pump sound that runs 24/7 and makes using the lanai more annoying than enjoyable. The rooms are plenty large for couple or small family. There are ice machines on even floors, each guest also is given a water bottle for use with the purifier in the lobby. The hotel has a beautiful pool (it rained our whole time so we didn't get to use it), WSW The Steakhouse restaurant with breakfast and $5 off coupon for each day of stay, and a coffee shop that converts to a bar and music venue on evenings and weekends. It's a quick walk from the Gardens, Coconut Island, and other hotels and restaurants nearby. Prices for our stay were worthwhile for the cleanliness and location. The only negative really was the service; rude experience with check in and dealing with the staff. We did however meet some very nice and helpful staff members especially in the coffee shop and on check out. Based on previous experiences at other hotels and this one, we'll definitely be back on our next stay.

Yelp
We were visiting as local tourists from Oahu. Back when we were kids, this place was supposedly really palatial. It truly has seen better days. When you first walk into the lobby, it appears at first to be very "plush. However, upon further scrutiny, we started to see how dated everything was: the rugs, the chairs, the peeling wall paper. I started having reservations about our rooms. We were sharing a larger suite with my mother-in-law, so we had adjoining rooms. Although it was convenient, the rooms were on the first floor and at the very ends of the hotel. As we walked into the rooms, we noted a very stale smell and the rooms were definitely showing their age. My poor son freaked out over the spiders he saw in several different spots around the rooms. I was just glad we didn't find bed bugs! It was thoroughly depressing. I was glad we were only staying one night. Their continental breakfast consisted of Costco pastries and small donut holes (these were actually good), some sad looking fruit and coffee/juices. It was disappointing again. We had to leave early as we wanted to get an early start with our visit to the volcanoes national park...and as quickly as we could, booked on outta there. I wish I could leave a better review...again, I'm just sad this place has lost its shine from it's heyday....

Yelp
Me and my Husband together celebrated our birthday by staying here at Hilo Hawaiian hotel. I came here with my husband and my 2year old daughter. Had a very soothing and comforting stay here. We booked our room at 5th floor with an ocean view. Rooms were clean and beds were very comfortable. They had a coffee machine along with hawaiian coffee and a green tea bad and one American tea bag, a refrigerator and an iron with an iron table. They don't have an microwave but of anyone need it they will provide you with $5 per day which is good. We needed key cards to enter, wifi was fast and good. Parking lots has good number of space, they has basement parking along with open spaces parkings lots. They had a gym and a gift shop which was really good were you can buy some gifts and can also grab some snack along. The hotel is surrounded with Banian trees and if you get down from you room Japanese garden and coconut island is just across the road which is just 5 minutes walk from the hotel. I was bit disappointed with one single issue and that was being an hotel in Hawaii and we being an outsider expected a warm welcoming by offering us a flower garland as that whats Hawaii is known for but the interaction at the reception was bit cold just that they gave us our room keys thats all. Room service was very good and were helpful. My overall stay was just memorable. Thank you Hilo Hawaiian to make our trip amazing. We are definitely looking forward to be with you again.

Yelp
This hotel is in a terrible location. Surrounded by homeless. The hotel itself needs to be updated. Hilo is one location I wish we could have skipped. The whole town seemed dirty.

Yelp
5 stars for the great service here, the employees solved my issues i had from Expedia with care and speed. Really appreciate them going above and beyond for me :)

Yelp
I think this is the best hotel in Hilo. Three stays over past three years and it gets better and better. Best location, free self parking, huge tv, incredible continental breakfast (OMG, those pastries and croissants!!), spectacular views, lanais and other outdoor spaces and the always amazing staff. Every time i visit the Hilo Hawaiian i become more appreciative of the staff and property itself. I will be visiting again!

Yelp
Amazing customer service! Free parking (apparently, unlike many other places) included in the resort fee. No fee towels for pool and beach. Free breakfast. Complimentary reusable hotel water bottles. No charge for wine glasses (just leave in the room when done)...plus allowed us to check in 2 hrs early for free. Coffee, fridge, soap/shampoo/lotion/hair caps...inside the room. Near everything! Waterfalls, good food, parks, beach....I am very pleased.

Yelp
This place need a much NEEDED UPGRADE! The only reason it get two stars is because of the beautiful view! They had an iron with NO ironing board. So I ironed on the small table beneath the TV with a towel underneath my blouse. I Would NOT RECOMMEND!

Yelp
Stay in a hostel. It will probably be more up to date with 2024.......housekeeping tried to get out of cleaning our room but front desk made them. Location was good..... that's what they get the 1 star for. Mahaloooooooo

Yelp
Last Resort? Though there are many hotels and resorts on the Big Island, this hotel may be literally the last resort if there are no other choices. I stayed here for one night only last weekend. I will try my best to be objective in this review...especially since I was only a guest for one night. PROs: 1. Friendly-ish staff at check-in. The young man who assisted us at check-in was competent at his job, but I think he felt stressed out at having to multi-task checking in guests, answering the phone, and assisting his co-worker (who seemed to be new to the duties of the check-in desk). 2. Parking available on site on a first-come first serve basis. Two parking levels available: lower is shaded. Elevator accessible for both levels. 3. Covid precautions in place: masks required on property, social distancing in elevators (depending if you're in the same household or not). 4. Comfy bed (kinda). 5. The hallways are well-lighted....and extremely bright (makes me wish I'd taken a picture). CONs: 1. Rooms are in severe need of renovation; new carpert, bathroom updates, etc. 2. Shower water pressure was not good.....it wasn't as strong as it should be. And the lighting in the shower was very POOR.....very, very DIM. Some of the lighting budget for the hallways should have been diverted to upgrading the lights in the bathrooms. 3. The flat screen tv was smaller than I expected, though I do admit you don't go on vacation to just watch tv. NOTEs: 1. Ice machines are located on the even numbered floors. 2. The hotel is adjacent to a nice park area overlooking Hilo Bay. BOTTOM LINE: I'd consider staying at another hotel if I need to stay the night in Hilo.

Yelp
So, for the most part I haven't had too many issues here. Like the other reviewers have said, this isn't an upscale hotel. It's a taller hotel than the others at 8 stories high but everything else except the lobby and the 6th floor corridor is extremely dated. See below - so initially I was given a room on the 5th floor but the tub wouldn't drain so I asked for another room. I was then given a room on the 6th floor but clearly people don't read the no smoking sign and it reeks of marijuana to the point where I felt like I got a contact medium. Enough said about the everything else, just see the pictures.

Yelp
This hotel is right on the water. The facility is dated, but very clean and staff was helpful. Disappointed that we stayed 5 days and the treadmills were broken every day. Another guest was there the previous week and they were broken that week too. I only care because it rained every day and it was hard to get a run in without getting really wet. Views are terrific. This was our honeymoon so a bit disappointed.

Yelp
We like this hotel. We had a great view and for the most part staff was friendly (except for the grumpy auntie who wouldn't let me take the towel to the beach - geez! Charge us for it if we don't bring it back lady.) The rooms are a bit dated and its right next to the old Uncle Billy's which some unhoused have made their residence. There was a point when the elevators were acting funny which made me think the place was haunted - spooky!! Also, wish they had room service or at least hot water so we could make a Cup O Noodle. But we had a stellar view of coconut island and I do like their Hawaiian Sun products. We did really enjoy WSW restaurant and wished we had time to listen to the live music. We also loved how it is right next to the Japanese garden and think it is so interesting to see the difference between high tide and low tide. I would say location here is better than the Hilton bc Hilton is trapped between two properties that have been taken over by the unhoused. Still a bit pricey for what is - it was about $300 per night with fees and tax in August 2023 for ocean front deluxe when booked way in advance (5 months). If ever in need we might come back but will try Hilton next time since they have SUP and kayak.

Yelp
Update on Hilo Hawaiian hotel . This my 2nd time staying with them ever since I had a bad experience at the Naniloa hotel. The last time I was here @ the Hilo Hawaiian it was last year May. I guess back than things was just getting back to normal but they still had Covid protocol in place . House keeping was not available you had to call front desk for towels and rubbish needed to be left outside of your room. Still till today same situation when I checked in front desk explained no daily housekeeping available towels just call and any rubbish needed to be put outside the room. When I got into my room I noticed behind the bathroom door there was a towel hanging that housekeeping forgot to remove . That was pretty gross I knew it wasn't clean because normally all towels in hotel rooms are folded . So that experience for me they lost some rating . I understand maybe there also short handed on staff like everyone else in the world it's a ongoing thing but no excuses we're talking about sanitary. Next time in the future I'll still stay at the Hilo Hawaiian because I prefer them over the hotels nearby. Support local and be safe

Yelp
The overall experience at this hotel was great. The people that work there were awesome. The bar personnel were great made awesome drinks, housekeeping did an excellent job and the front desk personnel were very pleasant. I definitely would recommend coming to this hotel if you stay in Hilo.

Yelp
Just a 'meh' rating. It was just average, it's definitely past its prime. We had 2 different rooms there. The door lock ( the kind where you swing the metal piece over to secure the lock) in the first room was broken ( the peice had broken off to lock door and wasn't replaced ). The phones to the front desk in BOTH rooms did NOT work. The toilet paper holders in BOTh rooms were coming out of the walls. And I didn't try both hairdryers ( attached to the wall) but the one I tried didn't work either. One of the the rooms the pipe in the wall was 'knocking' continuously. In one room the AC smelled musty. Also, the fitness room had MASSIVE problems. The AC unit does NOT cool the space, even a little ( just does NOT work right!) . Also, you can't reach any of the louvre windows to open them. The fitness room smelled heavily of mold/must. And even worse, it stank a 20 out of 10 of TOXIC rubber . It burned your eyes and throat breathing it in. It was pretty torturous to be honest but I really like to work out so I had no choice. Overall, I would definitely NOT STAY here again because SO many things were breaking down and overall just needs minor and moderate maintenance. I gave 3 stars because the view was very nice and it was overall quiet and felt safe.

Yelp
Never stay at the Hilo Hawaiian hotel. Front desk said we could check out at 1pm free of charge anything later there's a fee and to let them know the next day. So we went down and asked. Another lady pretended to check the system and then says no you can't stay we have lots of people checking in. Funny how it's also under Ala moana hotel and we have the best service there. Now get this housekeeping came and knocked on our door 13mins before 12pm and said we have 10 mins. No sympathy for having stayed here because of going to a funeral. Kama'aina stay away! By the way they had a wedding downstairs and they left the door open playing music louder than the frogs till 10pm!

Yelp
Mothers Day and they stopped serving breakfast at 9:00 am! What? What marketing manager thought this was a guest friendly money maker?! Would be nice to let guests know this so they won't sleep in!!! We got there at 9:15 am to find this out. We ate at kens pancakes without a problem. We never had coffee or food 4 days at this hotel. Very unusual on a vacation. The bed, bring your own pillow . You get a used one that's 25 years old. The bed has a serious dip in it. Can't wait to sleep in my temperpedic at home tomorrow night. The lobby is nice. The free parking was the best part. It's sad how the pandemic changed services forever.

Yelp
So I have stayed many times at this hotel. Although the rooms could use a little refresh, the hotel is fine. The views of the Hilo bay are beautiful. They have a continental breakfast which consists of oatmeal, a bowl of apples and a tray of pastries in addition to coffee and tea. I guess better than nothing. My only true gripe with the hotel is the rude front desk older woman, who rudely accused me of stealing pool towels. I told her that I did indeed return them to the front desk and not only told the woman my room number but my last name as well. Then after being told the resort fee was included in my 3rd party booking while checking in she rudely informed me it wasn't and handed me the receipt for the $35. charge without an explanation on the discrepancy. Every time I have shown up to check in there, I cringe as I approach the front desk. Not sure why they can't be friendly and welcoming in stead of so rude. I'll be staying at the Hilton Grand Naniloa in the future.

Yelp
We've stayed here twice with beautiful views and it's a nice base for exploring the big island including the Hawaii Volcanoes NP. A dining highlight for both trips was the Hotel's amazing Luau style "Queens" buffet with all you can eat snow crab, suckling pig, pork laulau, various seafood dishes and great variety of deserts. No Luau style entertainment but that was a plus to us. We liked the continous house wine too at no extra charge. Only serious flaw was the annoying smoker on the balcony next door in a non-smoking room. We reported the problem, but the person simply lied to the staff. We were considering another trip to this hotel at this time, but were horrified to see they replaced the Queens buffet with a steakhouse. We don't fly half-way around the world to Hawaii to eat at a steakhouse. Plenty of these here, but without the ludicrous prices.

Yelp
Solid hotel, very pretty lobby and fairly clean rooms. Only complaint is the restaurant and bar sucked. Also found some hair on the wall in my shower

Yelp
Don't expect any Aloha welcome or greeting here because Alicia at the front desk seriously lacked customer service when we checked in. No greeting, no smile, nothing but silence. She acted as though she was doing me a favor by working today. Check-in took longer than expected. All she did was stare at the screen to the point where I thought something was wrong with my reservation so I asked. No explanation. No small talk to ease the time it was taking. The process was very uncomfortable and nothing you would expect from any hotel check-in process. The manager was busy at the time so I called from my room and asked for the manager's name Alice said she couldn't help me and then hung up on me. She has to be the rudest hotel employee I have ever encountered. The rooms here are comfortable but older with stained carpet and the wall in the bathroom even had a huge crack along where the drywall boards meet and the internet is unreliable so not a good place to come and expect to get some work done. However, housekeeping was pleasant and they are always kind when I stay here. They brought what I needed quickly and Coconut Island is right in back of the hotel which is a nice place to view and take walks.

Yelp
Truly enjoyed my stay at this hotel. I got the ocean view room on the 7th floor and the view was spectacular. The rooms are updated and clean. The staff were very nice and accommodating. Had breakfast 2 of the 3 days I stayed and the food was really good, especially the oxtail soup, yumm. I will definitely stay here again when I come back next.

Yelp
Bed bug droppings, roach droppings near fridge, depressing lighting, run down and dirty. Front desk not very helpful, prob can't blame cleaning staff as they probably don't hire enough to do proper job nor pay enough. Wish I booked anther hotel for what is now a long week. Two pluses are a decent lobby, balcony with view of water, but no screens, so bugs easily get into your room, even just opening it and closing quickly. It's basically a waterfront view with a steakhouse and no attention to detail nor basic hygiene.
