I stayed at the Hilton Amsterdam on my December 2023 trip to the city, I was rather disappointed with my stay overall, having previously stayed at the Doubletree by Hilton at Amsterdam Centraal and the Doubletree by Hilton at NDSM Island on previous trips to Amsterdam, it is my least favourite Hilton in the city.
The hotel is located on Apollolaan, one of the most expensive streets in the city, for tourists it isn't ideal at all, it's at least a ten-minute walk to a tram stop and from there, it isn't too bad into the city but the time adds up in-case you want to head back if you've forgotten your jacket.
Leidseplein - 6 minutes
Red Light District - 11 minutes
Centraal Station - 18 minutes
My stay started very well, I received a lovely welcome email, I explained the purpose of my trip was to celebrate my birthday, and they upgraded me in advance to a suite as a Hilton Honors Diamond member. As soon as I arrived at the hotel, things turned sour and I didn't feel valued as a Diamond member.
The check-in process was long and stressful, I was checked in by a blonde receptionist who was rather rude. She questioned the integrity of my Hilton Honors Diamond status, before explaining to me I would be denied access to the Executive Lounge, she mentioned how they would still be giving me free breakfast - but I had already paid for a room rate with Breakfast included, as I had booked two rooms and wanted Breakfast for everyone so it wasn't free, and she then argued with me about this.
I was able to get access to the Executive Lounge for the final two nights of my stay, and for such a large hotel, the Lounge was tiny, with only a few tables, I also heard stories of other guests being denied access to the Lounge due to the size and no alternative being offered. For such a large hotel, with the historic fame of being home to John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Bed In Protest, you'd expect better.
There was a small selection of canapes (nothing GF) and alcoholic drinks between 17:00 and 19:00.
The check-in process was so time-consuming, despite advising the receptionist I had a debit card, I was told there was no way around the card hold, in the end, they offered to take a hold for one room, rather than two... only for them to take the full €700 for both rooms and tell me there was nothing they could do but refund it in a couple of days.
After arriving at my room, I was tired after my flight and the check-in experience, the room was fairly nice but the facilities were basic for a Suite. The safe was located towards the back of a high and deep shelf, meaning you'd have to be over six feet tall to reach it so it was unusable for me. There was also no desk, so I had to form a makeshift one using the sofa, and coffee table, which wasn't ideal. The guests travelling with me had similar issues in their Deluxe Room with the safe and no desk so this wasn't just an issue exclusive to the suites.
My room was a tad small for a suite but the sofa and bed were both comfortable, and there were bed-side sockets including handy USB charging. There was a small fridge in the room, but only one small shelf could be used for the guest's own items, I did put some of my items in place of the free waters in the mini bar, but housekeeping moved them so they obviously mustn't like guests using the space for themselves.
I did find a lack of storage space across the room as a whole, not just in the refrigerator
Housekeeping standards also could have been better, they forgot to turn up on one day of my stay, if I had not returned to my room before 5 pm when housekeeping finished, I would not have had my room refreshed. They also never topped up my bottled water, or coffee, or cleaned the drinking glasses.
The heating in the room also would switch off automatically, even after a few minutes, so I had to request an electric heater, after asking the staff member to come up and look at it, they just told me to request a heater.
I did also have some noise issues during my stay, mainly from outside, you wouldn't realise it was Amsterdam's most expensive street from what was going on outside that's for sure, it felt as if my window could have been open even though I'd made sure it was wedged shut.
Breakfast is served in Roberto's Restaurant, the breakfast times were good until 10;30 am during the week and 11 am at weekends, although the fruit juice would run out and not be topped up before then, the overall quality was reasonably good. The bacon was crispy, the potatoes were tasty, and the eggs were average. I was confused by the surcharge of €8 for poached eggs and other items though.
Overall, I was disappointed by the Hilton Amsterdam, a famous hotel perhaps living off its past and not the future. One thing I've noticed with Hilton is the service always goes above and beyond to make it right, but at this hotel, I felt like a burden rather than a paying guest at the hotel which is also quite pricey.
