Yelp
Another one of those places I'm surprised I've not got around to reviewing yet is Hilton Berlin, which was the hotel where I stayed during my week in Berlin in the Summer, it is a "five-star accredited" hotel, but I don't feel the rating matches that in terms of Yelp ratings and my own personal experience.
Located in the Gendarmenmarkt, the location is okay, it is close to bus services and Stadtmitte Metro Station and isn't really within walking distance of a lot of things, unless you like longer walks.
The hotel breakfast was one of the worst I've had at the time, the scrambled eggs were a mess and even the beans had an unusual, horrible taste to them which was a shame which does show the need for Heinz to expand into Europe as they probably do some awesome beans, but this isn't recognised outside of the UK based on past experience. They didn't even have gluten-free bread, it was a mix of roles and something weird, it looked like bread but was one of the most disgusting examples of gluten-free bread I've tried in my life, which you can see a picture of alongside my review. I even had trouble with the qualities and presentation of the teas and service at breakfast, I was basically left to it and the staff didn't seem to care about telling me where everything was, or telling me what extras I could have and ordering them.
The hotel staff seemed mixed, some were friendly and eager to help, yet some were more reserved.
The lobby and areas around the hotel were quite nice, the wifi was a little iffy.
My overall room wasn't a five-star hotel standard, I struggled with a lack of plug sockets. The TV situation wasn't great either.
On my penultimate day at the hotel, the Schalke football team ended up staying here ahead of a friendly they had in Berlin the following day (the day I was going home), by the time I arrived back at the hotel most of the squad including former City player Matija Nastasic and Football Manager legend and City target Breel Embolo had come in, but I managed to see their manager, Domenico Tedesco.
This hotel is a decent hotel, there are so many things it needs to do to improve, especially in regards to maintaining a good standard of service throughout the hotel especially at breakfast, and the overall quality of room and breakfast could be better too. The location isn't great, but they can't just pick the hotel up and put it somewhere else, the tube station outside is quite confusing with different lifts and staircases, some even streets away from each other to get to "different sides".
Three star rating - which I feel is slightly generous is warranted here.
