This hotel should be brilliant, given the location and the Hilton brand, but unfortunately that wasn’t our experience. The hotel rooms are well equipped and very comfortable; the area is quiet. It’s the service which has led me to give the hotel three out of five. We arrived just after 10:00 following our Viking river cruise knowing that our room would not be ready at that time. However when we tried to check in at 13:00 we were told that Viking customers were not allowed to check in until 15:00, which was somewhat disappointing. This is the first hotel (of many, in various countries) which has not permitted us to check in an hour or two before official check in time. The following morning we found the breakfast room disorganised; it was unclear whether tables were already occupied and some tables which were not occupied had not been cleared. The fresh fruit selection was poor, and the egg station was producing omelettes which weren’t thoroughly cooked. The rooftop Sky Bar, which is part of the hotel, is understandably popular and often booked up well in advance. Could part of the Sky Bar be set aside for Hilton guests? I feel that those paying to stay at the hotel should have some priority over those staying elsewhere. Finally, I had to seriously question the quality of the service when, on the last night of our stay, we left the bar after having a drink, and were followed by a member of staff shouting that we hadn’t settled our bar bill. We told him that we had, of course, given our room number and signed the paperwork; he checked with a colleague who confirmed that we HAD settled our bill. No apology was offered to us by the staff member, though, to the hotel’s credit, they waived the cost of the two drinks on checkout. Such a pity that this embarrassing incident happened in the first place.
