Small town down home atmosphere at this nice little cafe. One side is where you can sit at the bar and watch the cooks making this great food, and the other side is a dining area. Everyone was very friendly and nice. The food is cooked to order and the old fashioned way! Good good good!

Our first visit, in town for the Christmas lights tour. Smell of hamburgers from the sidewalk gets your attention. Old style dinner with counter seating in one room and a few tables in adjoining room. Great little burgers, clean restaurant, and they were busy. Nostalgia, friendly service, and convenient to area shopping.

The smell of burger took us there 😋 service was good and employees were friendly even though they were very busy. Food was tasty as well.

Quaint little a burger joint with authentic feel. Definitely get the onion rings and the shoestring fries. Reasonably priced at about $12 a meal. Thanks to my friend Diane B for recommending it. Love the lunch counter!.

Don't sleep on this little sandwich joint serving up some great all-American, perfectly greasy, and simply delicious burgers (among other classics). We got three double cheese burgers, and it's been hours since we ate... I'm still thinking about them. Great service and laid back atmosphere. We really enjoyed this place.

A Madison tradition long before the town became a tourist haven, Hinkle's is like a lighter version of an old-fashioned diner. There are two main rooms, one cafe-like with small tables and chairs, the other a diner with only stools at a long counter, from which you can see the Grill Cook at work. The burgers are medium-size sliders that are only a little greasy, but full of flavor. They asked if I wanted onions and I'm glad I said yes: they grill them with the patties, which really flavors the meat nicely. They have other kinds of sandwiches but WHY? I had a cup of the chili that was very good, lots of meat and nicely seasoned. I haven't tried any of their milkshakes yet, but they're famous for them. The service was fast and friendly, too. All that, and for a really reasonable price, what's not to like?!

Going into this place is like traveling back in time. It is an old school hamburger stand. Service was awesome, the food comes out as soon as it is done. Nothing fancy, just good old fashioned food as a good price. Love it

My wife and I had dinner here and it was very delicious. I had the triple Burger and my wife had the grilled cheese. We were a little surprised that the hamburger was such a small diameter. But how big a hamburger do you need? And it was very, very good! We had the French fries that were brought to the table piping hot. The service was remarkably fast and the mint shake that my wife got was delectable. Did I mention that the price before tip was only fifteen dollars!

Like a trip down memory lane! From the moment I walked through the doors I felt transported back in time. Staff were simply amazing, the little burgers were so simple yet tasty. Between the 50-60's vibe, the great food, and the wonderful staff, it's a place to hit!

You have to go to this place if you're in town. They have an assortment of the best milkshakes around and AMAZING hamburgers. We absolutely loved the the service as well. We were a large group on a bachelor party so we're pretty rowdy but they were very nice to us and fun. Our server was Debbie and she was a sweetheart and gave us good recommendations to go about the town.

I don't know where this magic place came from, but their slider sized burgers are amazing! They offer home fries as a tasty side dish and it's a great alternative to fries. There is cute counter style seating in one side of the restaurant and the other side has regular table seating. There are two separate entrances and you can't move between the two sides from inside. The restroom is on the side with dining tables and if you're seated at the counter, you have to go outside and in through the other door. You can't hop the counter. We asked. Service was great. The visible kitchen was clean and fun to watch. Loved everything about this place.

Definitely stop in here if you're in the area. Their hamburgers are basically upscaled White Castle burgers. The milkshakes are very popular and I thoroughly enjoyed mine. The real hidden gem were the funnel cake fries. OMG these were sooooo good. Just like having little slices of perfectly done funnel cake.

Hinkle's burgers are delicious. Whether it's a late night snack or an early lunch they always hit the spot. I consider myself to be an official cheeseburger critic, lol, so I can say Hinkle's burgers are definitely worth the cost.

A fan-favorite since my Hanover College days! The prices haven't changed (much) in the last 20 years, and I'm pleased to see that the flavors are just as great as in my recollection. The Wedding Cake shake is, and always will be, my favorite!

the food is really good and cheap. I got a small milkshake, double cheeseburger, and fries with cheese for 11 dollars. I love this restaurant. the service on the other hand is not the best. I wanted to add something to my order and it took forever for me to get my waitresses attention. once I got her attention she gave a me some attitude. then she gave us our receipt but it took forever to pick it up. she was nice at first but then towards the end she gave us attitude. and the person that handed us our food, assuming he was the cook, just slammed our food on the table. then when someone else brought our food the lady asked who got the cheeseburger and I didn't hear her and she yelled cheeseburger at me.

The food is greasy, diner food but a Madison staple! It's a must have when visiting town! Slider burgers before the slider movement. Small takeout or dining area with counter service. Prices are cheap.

Hinkle burgers are a favorite of mine. The home fries are a restaurant specialty. The French fries are made to order. Served hot and crispy. The locals love and always recommend this place.

The nostalgia of this place is good. The service was pleasant and average on wait time. The burger was a little bigger than your typical slider. I was hoping for some seasoning on the burger. it was straight out of the package and dry. I opted to take the top off as who needs the extra carbs when it's not good. the onion rings on the other hand were very tasty. It's one of those places you visit, because who doesn't visit Hinkles when in Madison, IN? It's been around for a very long time and it's always good to support local businesses.

I've been here before in the past but I decided to finally review it. As usual, this place hit the spot. People who are new to Hinkle's should know that this is not your typical burger place. The burgers are served slider style (just like White Castle or kyrstal) with a thin patty, onions, and pickles. The burgers are fleshly made and always taste great. On this occasion, I went for lunch and got only single burgers (usually I will get double cheese sliders) and a side a fries. I recommend getting a couple double cheese burgers instead of the singles if you are a bit more hungry. For a lunch portion, the singles were enough for me. This place never disappoints and it's always consistent. Additionally, the service is always exceptional and efficient. On this particular trip, it was Labor Day weekend, so it was pretty crowded. Regardless of that (and even having to wait a little) it probably took no longer than 30 ish minutes to be in and out. This place is a staple of the madison community. If you have not been, make sure to try it out this unique dining experience. I look forward to coming back soon!

Super great waitress and cook! Small little place we had to wait for a seat but it was worth it. Some got breakfast and others go burgers. Best thing was peanut butter milkshake

Stick with the sliders and milk shakes. They were really good. The special was fish and chips and it was all breading. Not good. Overall cute little diner type - the kids loved the milkshakes and funnel fries.

Five stars. Been eating here for decades. Always a great place to stop and grab something delicious and or quick. Highly recommended!

Hinkle's gets 5-stars for friendly service, nostalgia & perfect diner food. Had to sit at the bar for old time sake and tell stories of the good old days.

Ordered the dbl burger and fries, burger was super small and fries arrived 10 mins later. Server was not attentive and we ended up leaving cash on the table as she was no where to be seen. Small dinner setting. Milkshake was soft serve in a cup.

This place was recommended by a friend and after looking up the menu, I got excited before I even made it to Indiana. If you're looking for the old time diner in small mid-America, you've found it here. Oh and the milk shakes...........the milk shakes. The flavors. The burgers take you back to your childhood. I don't get to this area but when I'm there, Hinkle's is on my list.

Burgers were very good, as were the hash browns & shakes. The gal that waited on us was very fun & friendly. The only negative I would give would be the prices. The burgers were a little bigger than sliders, but didn't taste like them. By that I mean they were much better! We will likely return in the future. Oh the cost for my wife & me was $36 for four double cheeseburgers, hash browns, a large & small shake. Not outrageous, but more than I expected.

If you're looking for a diner, this is the place. Junior burgers are great, their hashbrowns with gravy are my favorite!

This is a neat little burger/shake shop right on the main road in Madison. It's like stepping into a time machine (in a good way). The burgers are a little small, but dirt cheap so order a few (or get a double). And don't miss the milkshakes either (they have dozens of flavors).

Double cheese burger was amazing! The onion rings were delicious! Prices were really good. Have a sweet tooth? Try one of their milkshakes. You won't regret this stop.

I'm so glad we stopped here while we were in town. The service was friendly and informative, the food was DELICIOUS, and everything came out fast. We didn't realize there is a dining room next door. However, we enjoyed sitting at the counter, watching everything happening at the grill. We had cheeseburgers, a grilled cheese, chili, curly fries, and tater tots. Everything was great. My least favorite was the chili. It was fine, but a bit bland. I probably should have asked for hot sauce. The burgers were absolutely perfect - the right ratio of meat to bun, just enough grilled onions, and enough pickles to get one in every bite. Do yourself a favor and get a shake, too. I can't handle too much sweet stuff and I've literally never finished a full shake before until this one. I ordered the Almond Joy and it was the best shake I've ever had. (The kid says skip the strawberry banana, it was ok but not great.)

This is the epitome of a 60s diner restaurant with burgers fries and milkshakes and a few more goodies. They have a counter and stools from our past eras. It was so fun. The burgers are so delicious and the smell you get when you walk past is so amazing you will walk right in and order.

Love the river town vibe and local tradition here. Wait staff were very friendly and relatively fast. The slider burgers are large white castle-ish in every way but with more pungent beefy smell and overpowering taste. I added some mustard to the second slider and it was made instantly more palatable. We had our "When in Rome" moment and can say we've been here. The fries were the best food item, hot-n-crispy. The chocolate milkshake was unremarkable. If I come back to Hinkle's, I'll try a daily special or tenderloin.

Woefully average. Nothing about this place really stands out food wise. The service wasn't the best. All around disappointing

This is the cutest little diner! A real hole in the wall, if you will. There's bar seating for about ten. We placed an order for pickup because we were preparing for an event down the block. Service was good, it was lunch time, and a little crowded, but the wait to pickup out order wasn't terribly long. We weren't the only ones there to pickup an order, and they're was only one seat at the bar that was open. The food itself was very good, everyone in our party that ordered was happy with their choices; some people had burgers, one had the grilled cheese - they have a fairly diverse menu. I had the Chicken tenders and curly fries. The fries were well seasoned, the tenders were perfectly cooked and had great flavor. The price was reasonable for the quality and quantity of food per order.

Always a great stop when in Madison. This place is a staple. Food is consistent, but service is always top notch. Would recommend for anyone passing through town. Don't forget to grab a shake also!

Omg. I am still dreaming about these little burgers y'all. Other reviews were mad at the size of the burgers...the whole point is that they are cheap, slider size. Get multiple. May I emphasize CHEAP. Two whole meals and a milkshake for I think like $17. Yes, it's similar to fast food, but it's made to order on the grill. Small diner menu. They have limited seating but seemed to do a lot of takeout. Only about 6-8 bar stools inside for dining. Breakfast served from 6am-10am. Tiny little cheeseburgers. Get multiple. Be happy. Taste is a great and the bread is soft. They come with cheese, onions and pickles. Onion rings & fries are deep fried delicious. Add nacho cheese dipping sauce! HUGE selection of milkshakes. I'm not a sweets person but I had to try. Went with the dreamsicle. Delicious. Order one for sure. Only 4 stars since this place could use a serious deep clean. It's seen lots of days of cooking.

Visited Hinkle's for their famous hamburgers, which are slightly larger than a slider. Service was awesome, and we each got a cheeseburger with lettuce and tomato, and a side of potato salad. The burger was juicy and delicious, potato salad was 7/10. Sweet tea was freshly brewed. All in all a great experience and the ambiance of a historic place added to our enjoyment.

$2.25 for a hamburger the size of a White Castle slider and $4.59 for onion rings is ridiculous. The burger can be eaten in 3 bites. I know that Bidenflation/Bidenflation has caused the prices of everything to skyrocket, but this is insane. I don't care how long they have been in business. I don't expect anything for free,but I won't be back.

Hinkle burger is the best of the best. They are open 24/7 except on Sundays they are closed. They make these burgers that are just like white castle but better tasting and they don't destroy your gut. They also offer soups, salads, sandwiches, shakes, fries and hashbrowns. Their burgers and hash browns go straight on the griddle top. Their burgers are a little over a buck a piece but totally worth. Everytime were in town my husband makes us stop and order a dozen or so to bring back to the house because even cold these guys are good little burgers to snack on. Everything in Madison, IN is cute and adorable and you should try and check out. This is just one of the many hidden gems down there.

A friend recommended that I sample this local fare and I'm glad I did! I ordered a double cheeseburger with curly fries and a mocha shake. DELICIOUS!! The burgers are kind of slider size so go big or home home! I also got a side of cheese for my curly fries. So good! The shake options are endless so I'll have to take it upon myself to come back and try them all so I can adequately report back to Yelp. Oh darn! Lol! I am only rating 4/5 stars today due to them forgetting my fries so I had to go back and get them. The staff was quick and friendly when making the correction though. Also, I got some ketchup with my carryout, and the packets were all stuck together with honey that got all over my hands.

Great place for a good old fashioned burger and fries. This place has been around forever and one of the few Madison staples. It wouldn't be Madison without Hinkle Hamburgers

On our way home from family and took all back roads.... What a gem!!! Biscuit with bacon.... How does one go wrong?? Service impeccable -food delicious!! Madison.... We'll be back.

Have now been for breakfast and dinner and over all I'd say this place scores an 7/10. If you can't tell by the pics the hamburgers are baby burgers lol. But for such a small burger they pack a big punch in the flavor department. I highly suggest ordering them as they come with onions and pickles, and also getting two if you're really hungry. Curly fries were just okay in my opinion. There's an extensive shake menu, all syrup based. Was really hoping for a real strawberry shake. Breakfast menu is your basic eggs and meat kinda deal. The eggs come as ordered, perfectly cooked. Everything was good, the bacon, the eggs, hash browns and toast. Price = super cheap There's VERY limited seating! Like less than 10 bar seats maybe, and with covid only 6 are allowed in at a time. Staff is very laid back but friendly.

A local treasure! Please never change. I only wish I had eaten here more when I was in school at Hanover.

If you're in town, you have to go. It's better when it's not as busy. The workers are nice. They have a large shake collection and they are super good. The homefries are hit or miss, but still one of my favorites. It's super easy and quick.

Think White Castle sliders served by a delightful southern gal. Clean tables, fast service, and food that comforts the soul. Will return.

Cool burger & breakfast joint in a charming small town. The burgers are good--small enough to get 2, or have one and get a delicious shake--so many flavors! Table side or counter side--small and crowded at lunch. Friendly staff.

Stopped by Hinkle's to grab a few cheese burgers and I wasn't disappointed. They are simple with a burger pickle and fried onions. Very good. I bought 3 with their hash browns with onions and cheese. Really cool place that has been in business since the 1930s. If you are in Madison Indiana be sure to stop in and give them a shot. You won't be disappointed.

Had lunch here for the first Time while I was in town for acouple of days. Very casual place but service was good and the fish sandwich I had was very good and large . My sister in law had the BLT and said it was really good especially the bacon .

Cutest little diner in downtown Madison. Their burgers are really sliders - small, thin patties, topped with steamed onions. Probably like what White Castle tasted like originally/before it became a fast food chain. My companion and I each had a double cheeseburger, mine with tater tots, his with onion rings. This is not a place where you tell them what kind of cheese you want; it's yellow and that's really all you need to know. No option for burger toppings beyond pickles and the aforementioned steamed onions. The food was fantastic. We sat at the counter and the service was great. Would (will) definitely return.

First time eating here was today 10/16/21. The staff is phenomenal and they definitely know how to handle a crowd. Very friendly and welcoming. I had two cheeseburgers, my daughter had a double cheeseburger and curly fries with cheese dip as well as a small strawberry shake. With tip, my total was almost $20. Seems a bit steep for such small burgers (they are slightly larger than a White Castle but less greasy/mushy than a White Castle and way better meat quality). Definitely NOT knocking the burgers; they are good for sure and they don't leave that awful aftertaste that White Castles leave. If you're a big eater or super hungry, this place could definitely add up because these tiny burgers aren't cheap. All in all, it's a solid diner style burger and shake joint. My daughter absolutely LOVED the strawberry shake...so much so that we stopped back in about an hour after eating and got her another shake-large that time. My favorite thing was definitely the friendly ladies at the counter! I'd love to come back and try the tenderloin sandwich next time. I noticed a lot of people ordering it.

And you will never see a staff work so well together as they do when there are large community events in town. They know how to handle.the pressure of being busy. This is a hometown must.. the place you always have find memories of when you leave town and want to.bring your friends and family too.
