Did Your Food Delivery Come From a Rented Trailer? - Eater SF

"Another ghost kitchen company, Florida-based Reef Technology, gained mainstream attention earlier this month when a restaurant it operates called Happy Khao Thai was the victim of a so-called “glitch” in GrubHub’s automated system, somehow confusing it with Kin Khao, a Michelin-starred restaurant that most definitely is not inside a rented trailer in a San Francisco parking lot." - Eve Batey

Hippie Thai had a very cozy atmosphere the two times I’ve been here. The servers are very polite and organized. I recommend the pork fried rice and crispy chicken over fried rice. The portion was huge and satisfied us for the price we paid! Also, the inside is so pretty🙂🙂We’ll be coming by again soon :)

Google
Food was good but server was extremely arrogant! We told her our friend is pregnant so we want to sit at the corner table since it has cushion for seating. She made face and literally threw our menus at the table! After this when we went to ask her question she gave us very rude reply. Will never go again!

Been ordering delivery and also going in person to this place for a few years now. It’s consistently really good food. No shortcuts on ingredients, no ups and downs in taste over the years. Just really darn good Thai food in lowkey environment

I got a rancid green curry from takeout, tasting like vomit to me. Thai green curry is one of my favorite dishes, and I've ordered dozens over the years. I love any bold, spicy, fishy or fermented flavors. This one tasted rancid. I tried several bites to give it a chance, but I couldn't stomach it. This is the only time in 10 years of ordering takeout from many restaurants that I've ever received a dish I believed to be spoiled. We called the restaurant a couple days later to politely let them know. The owner's response was unprofessional and hostile. They chastised us over not calling sooner, over not knowing what curry tastes like. They refused to replace the curry with a noodle dish but eventually agreed to make a replacement curry. The pad see ew with beef was delicious, though.

Hippie Thai on Haight Street offers a vibrant and laid-back atmosphere that blends the charm of San Francisco’s eclectic culture with authentic Thai flavors. The moment you step inside, you’re greeted with a cozy vibe—think colorful decor and funky touches that give the place a relaxed, almost bohemian feel, in tune with the neighborhood’s spirit. The menu at Hippie Thai is a treat for both adventurous eaters and those craving comfort. They serve a variety of classic Thai dishes, from tangy Pad Thai and spicy Green Curry to flavorful Som Tum (green papaya salad) and hearty Tom Yum soup. Every dish is packed with bold, aromatic flavors that make it clear they use fresh ingredients and traditional spices. The balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy is spot-on, especially in dishes like the Pad See Ew and Massaman Curry, which are rich and satisfying without being overpowering. The service is friendly and attentive, adding to the overall positive experience. While the portions can be a bit on the smaller side for the price, the quality of the food makes up for it. It’s also great for those looking for vegan or vegetarian options—many dishes can be customized to fit dietary preferences. Overall, Hippie Thai provides a flavorful journey through Thailand’s culinary landscape, all within the relaxed, quirky vibe of Haight Street. Whether you’re looking for a casual lunch or a fun dinner outing, this spot is definitely worth checking out for those craving authentic Thai food with a bit of local flair.

Google
Great little Thai place. I liked the hot sauce quite a bit. The owner was a little shook that a white guy like me could hold the sauce down. That's how spicy it was. I managed though. Zack signing off.

Google
Excellent food and the best wait time. I was their during midday and had their lunch special.

Google
Update: restaurant barely 1/2 full. I sat down to eat at a two top. Waitress insisted I sit in the corner by the kitchen and bathroom. She would rather I leave and not come back then eat there again. The chicken Pad Thai is my favorite. Tasty and a shareable portion.

Yelp
Went on a little friend date and had a meal at this restaurant. It was a very cozy and the service was quick. Food was good and I enjoyed the meal very much.

Yelp
We came for dinner on a Sunday night and it was surprisingly empty. Food was hit or miss but service was very friendly and fast. We got a noodle soup that was too spicy for me sadly. The massaman curry wasn't the flavor I was expecting but it was very coconut forward and pretty good! The chicken was a little dry though. We also got the crispy chicken fried rice which was also super flavorful but the chicken was super dry as well and needed to be paired with the side sauce. The pad see ew had great flavor (leans on the sweeter side) but I wish it came with more broccoli! Overall a decent spot for a casual dinner on Haight St if you're super hungry since the service is quick!

Yelp
Absolutely not. No no, no no. I decided to venture off the typical path of Pad Thai and Pad See Ew to get the garlic noodles with roast pork. Where was the garlic? Nonexistent. Where was the flavor? Good question. Plain noodles, bland and fatty pork, and barely steamed vegetables all for $20. There was no flavor whatsoever I could have put the dish together in five seconds. I was starving and couldn't even finish it I was so sad. I asked for a sauce to save the bland flavor and it was soy sauce or a sweet and sour. Then I got charged for my to go container so that was a nice little cherry. My friend got the basil wok dish and liked it. Two stars since she liked it bug one from me.

Yelp
Absolutely loved the Crispy Chicken Fried Rice! The chicken was crunchy and paired well with the fried rice. The price for the quantity was also great compared to other Thai restaurants I've had in the city. Ordering is quick and easy: just order at the front and they'll bring your food out to you. Note that it is a small place so may not be the easiest place to eat for large groups, but I did go with a larger group so it's definitely possible.

Yelp
I loved this place and want to try so many things on the menu... First of all, its very cute! I love the atmosphere and vibes and decor. It really reminded me of little street food spots in Bangkok! I loved everything about it. Very warm and cozy feeling. The service was great- they were helpful and attentive. The FOOD though!! Everything on the menu looked amazing but I went with the Kua Noodles with pork. I loved it and would absolutely recommend. Definitely coming back here!! Gotta try that crab fried rice next time!

Yelp
This place is a neighborhood. GEM don't sleep on this small, quaint, casual restaurant service is fantastic courteous and accommodating. The food is fantastic. We had the mango salad with shrimp, garlic noodles with pork crab fried rice and the Thai basil chicken all were fantastic and served with such large portions. I will stop by anytime I'm in the neighborhood which is often, thank you Hippie Thai for a great afternoon lunch

Yelp
Service was quick and friendly! The food was fresh and hot! The flavor was delightful! I got the pad see-ew with chicken! It was great!

Yelp
1st time here. On walk home from work I was really hungry. Staying away from Carbs, sugar and most dairy. Doesn't leave me a lot of options. So I tried the shrimp spring rolls. 2 rolls cut into 6 pieces $13.00 They said the shrimp was fresh, which it wasn't. And it was mostly non-existent in the rolls. Way too much lettuce. Peanut sauce was great (they make it themselves); place is really clean and service very nice. Don't think I will be returning.

Yelp
Disappointed by the service as I felt unwelcome and very rushed by the staff and that I was inconveniencing them by eating there. I feel that people sometimes have a bad day so hoping it's just a one-time off night and willing to give them another shot in the future as the food was good. Or maybe just stick to take-out if the dining service is bad all the time? Came late on a Saturday night but felt pressured to order as they came by multiple times and then once it hit closing time.. at 10pm on the dot, they aggressively stacked the chairs on the table next to us and opened the door wide open basically inviting us to exit or be forced out by the cold gusts of outside air. Needless to say, it was not a great experience for that reason. The food we ordered was all tasty though from the panang curry, which was spicy, so that was different. The Hippie Special had good flavor and lots of seafood. Pad See Ew was tasty but wasn't that spicy which was strange... wonder if it got the spice that went in the curry? And an eggplant dish that came out to be tastier than expected based on the dish description. Few were dining in which was probably due to the late hour but did see a couple of takeout orders.

Yelp
This place never disappoints! I had the Tom Kha before and the pad Thai and they were huge portions. This time we went with appetizer options and had the chicken satay, fried pumpkin with chili sauce, mango sticky rice and Thai tea. EVERYTHING was delicious. The workers here are so sweet and attentive.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I took a trip to this area to visit another store on this street and were hungry so we decided to check this place out. The interior is pretty cramped so there's very little space in between tables. Service overall was ok, nothing spectacular. They do have 1 bathroom for paying customers, but was also very run down. Food: Pad See Ew (3/5): The noodles and sauce were good but the meat on it had a rubbery texture that wasn't appetizing which was a shame since they give a good amount of meat. Street Food Sampler (3/5): This portion is enough for 2 people but gave me frozen food vibes and didn't really taste fresh to me. I'd recommend passing on this. Parking: Horrible. It gets so busy on this street and street parking is limited so it took us 20 min to find parking alone. As much as I wanted to like this place, SF has a lot of other food options and I won't be coming back.

Leah S.

Yelp
Server had a bad attitude and a bit rude..when we asked what she'd recommend she basically said it was up to us with a snotty attitude, people who came in after us were served first, she never checked to see if we needed anything or if the food was ok..it wasnt garlic pepper shrimp was cold, tofu pad was greasy, cold and vegetables were barely cooked, chicken pad was half cold and vegetables not cooked and greasy as well. Food was terrible and service totally lacking and unfriendly.table next to us was empty of people and covered in dirty dishes, took quite awhile for her to clean it but there were very few people eating there at time,no real reason for it to sit dirty. If I could give zero stars I would

Yelp
Fun fact: miley cyrus ate here many years ago, you can see her picture inside. The portions are pretty big given the price so its definitely a great value. They don't have spice levels tho which is interesting. Came here with some friends and I have to say, my favorite out of everything was the fried rice. It wasn't super dry.
google avatar

Kurt S.

Yelp
I would characterize this place as Midwestern white-folks Thai, in that every dish was significantly underseasoned. Not just missing the heat, but missing the flavor. Easy for them to fix - I hope they do. For better food, I'd point you towards Thai House in the lower Haight (and no, I don't work for them :-)

Rebeca O.

Yelp
Small place, big flavour! Food is tasteful, one of the best Thai Ive had. Beautiful owners. Very warm and welcoming. Checked on is several times, stopped for small chat. Lovely heart and care about their community. We saw th m offer food to a homeless woman free of charge

Marina R.

Yelp
Yellow curry was amazing!!! Sadly does not come with rice so you do have to get this on the side, which makes it more expensive but still not too bad. I also wanted to try the garlic noodles so i got just a side and it was absolutely more than enough for me! Good portion, unfortunately it wasnt as garlicky as i thought it would be so i do think it needs the additions like the meat and veggies in order to be really good but overall great experience

Yelp
We were satisfied with what we got. The food tasted great, and the fried pumpkin is a must. The beef noodles tasted delicious coming from someone who usually prefers Tom Yum better. We would recommend trying the place out, and they have a lot more to offer on the menu. The place was clean, and our server checked on us many times.

Eric G.

Yelp
We came here after checking out the menu, it looked good. The food was not and neither was the service. I ordered a side of Salmon with Pad Thai after pointing to the sauteed salmon and broccoli. The salmon was deep fried, which was crazy and unexpected. I bit into it and the massive amount of oil was dripping out of it. I tasted it and it tasted not fresh. I went up to the counter and told them that I didn't want the salmon and explained that it was deep fried and not fresh. The waitress explained that the menu said it was deep fried. It did not say that except on one completely different dish. I also ordered extra scrambled egg in my Pad Thai. For an extra $3, I got a tablespoon size portion of egg on the side. My wife's pork, rice, and vegetables was terribly bland and dry. The menu said it came with peas and carrots, but there did not seem to be any. She told the waitress and she found a single carrot and said, "see!" My wife had ordered wine, and several minutes after the food arrived I finally went up and reminder the waitress about the wine. For the rest of the meal the waitress didn't say a word to us. I asked for the check and the waitress took the unfinished glass of wine away before she brought the check. While we were eating, a woman came in and sat at the next table. After sitting there for 10 minutes without anyone giving her a menu or welcoming her, she got up and left. I see from other reviews that the owner answers negative reviews with insults rather than apologies. I rarely find a restaurant that exhibits such contempt for their patrons.

Yelp
Overall, not a bad place for Thai food! I ordered the pad see ew with tofu. Although it was a little too sweet for my taste, I liked that there was wok hei flavor in the noodles. I also feel like the price was pretty decent for the portion size, especially for SF-- I took about 1/4 of my plate home since I was so full.
google avatar

Natalie R.

Yelp
The service was great, and the staff was friendly. I ordered the green curry and it was absolutely delicious
google avatar

Joyce H.

Yelp
This place is good if you are looking for a quick bite since the food comes relatively fast. The portions are also big so I took leftovers to go. Be careful of what level of spice you ask for because my friend who usually handles spice well found the pad kee mao spice a bit overwhelming. Only giving three stars because the pad see-ew was way too sweet for my taste compared to other Thai places I like. There's also not a lot of seating and there's not much room for you to put your jackets or larger bags down.
google avatar

Nathan D.

Yelp
Delicious food and friendly service. Great place to go eat after bar hopping in the haight.
google avatar

Mayer M.

Yelp
The other day a friend and I walked by the place and I wanted to order a drink to go. My friend wants to use a restroom. Waitress said to me I have to sit down order. Then I sit down ready to order two drink. She said I can't only order drink to use restroom. I have to order foods. Bad and mean attitude and service. 1/5 hospitality

Yelp
I am a big fan of Thai food, so I do hold a high standard. I can give this place a 3-3.5 star recommendation. Pro: this restaurant does offer a lot of food options than most Thai restaurants in SF; people here are very kind and nice; and the noddles come with a good portion. Cons: OVERPRICED, 4 small crab cakes are over$15? It is indeed crazy (the dish is called crazy crab). The flavor is rather flat compared to some other Thai places. I will not consider coming back here when there are a ton of places that I can choose from, but this is not a bad place by any means. It is just not with the best value.
google avatar

Yelp
Speedy service. Great ambience. Large portions. Tasty delights. One woman show. Come.

Danielle H.

Yelp
The beef noodle soup and the pad ke mao are my favorites. The noodles in the pad ke mau are so wide and chewy and so good. They taste homemade! Also like the chicken larb with a side of sticky rice. Its my favorite place to go when I have work on that side of the city- it is fast, casual and delish. Love this spot!
google avatar

Emily P.

Yelp
We have been crying about the loss of Ploy 2 and in our search we have found a good solution with Hippie Thai! Everyone is so friendly, the food is tasty and the pick up is speedy. Would put in a request for the curry noodle soup-that we miss so much from Ploy 2, but there are many delicious dishes!
google avatar

Rhona G.

Yelp
We enjoyed a nice lunch at Hippie Thai. It was a very busy weekend lunch. We first got 2 tables for 5 people then the host transferred us to a bigger table once it became available. Service was friendly and accommodating. We ordered the pad Thai, eggplant basil, pad kee mao, and tofu noodle soup. All dishes were good except the noodle soup that lacked flavor. It's a small Thai cafe and so keep in mind that it gets busy at the meal time rush on the weekends.
google avatar

Christine V.

Yelp
Got the hippie Special for lunch after hours of thrifting, did the job to refuel, but was a bit over seasoned (too sweet and salty). Also got the iced Thai coffee, but could probably pass on that the next time around.
google avatar

Anna Z.

Yelp
Delicious crab fried rice and pad kee mao here. The portions were quite pretty generous though the pad kee mao could've used a tiny bit more protein for the price. We enjoyed the service and finding parking after 7pm on a Monday wasn't too bad.

Jenny T.

Yelp
Have seating for around 15 people. You can add duck to any dish you want. We got milky sake it's very unique drink
google avatar

Ken H.

Yelp
I've had the fried wide noodles (Pad See-ew + Rad Nah) a few times and they were always so bouncy, smokey from proper wok char, and super generously portioned! Some reviews seem to be less glowing than mine, but I def think this is the top choice for Thai food in this part of town.

Hayley S.

Yelp
I was soooo excited to eat here after craving thai food my entire trip in san francisco! i've been on a huge thai street food kick so trying different recipes of these classic dishes has been fun.. with that being said i ordered my normal kra pow + fried egg -- i was not in love with it. the flavor was a little off & even after asking for "thai spicy" it wasn't even a little bit spicy. i was a bit upset when the egg was fried hard after requesting an over easy egg. i'm giving this item a 6/10 due to it not satisfying by flavor pallet but was still fulfilling. the ka ree puff's were absolutely AMAZING. fried cirru balls with curry inside & peanut sauce on the side. the peanut sauce with it tied the entire dish together! i'm giving this item a (10/10) i definitely suggest trying if you stop by this location! service was fast and efficient, i only had a problem with the waitress asking my table of 6 if it would be on one or separate checks & when prompting it would be separate and her agreeing she ended up putting it all on one check. when we asked why she continued with saying she meant one plate or extra plates to share?? not a huge deal, i would just prepare to put everything on one card or all bring cash! the overall ambiance of the restaurant gave authentic thai street food vibes, very small and close nit. you're on the cutest little street in San Francisco where artist like jimmy hendrix & the grateful dead formally lived -- just a few blocks down! i would come back here just for different entrees!
google avatar

Pauline W.

Yelp
Simple little Thai joint with big bold flavors. The street sampler was fantastic, it gave you a bit of everything and everything was super fresh. The pork belly was crispy and full of flavor... highly recommend!!
google avatar

Dean B.

Yelp
It's ok-Overpriced-to start with-the food was ok-greasy-though-the food comes in small plates-you will have order a few order to get a decent meal-would not return
google avatar

Kimberly P.

Yelp
I work on Haight street so last time I went I ordered only dessert to-go. the waitress was EXTREMELY RUDE. I am sure she was overwhelmed since it was a bit busy but that doesn't justify her attitude. I like the food but I was really thrown off by the service.

Laura F.

Yelp
Their spring roll is about 90% lettuce and the service was very rude. I asked for my order to go but when the kitchen served it on a plate to dine-in, the server moved it into a to-go container w bare hands after handling money and not washing her hands. If this wasn't a tourist spot this place would never survive.
google avatar

Tomohisa W.

Yelp
Just stopped off here on my way home from a little Xmas shopping at the boutique shops that litter haight street since I haven't had Thai food in a while. Just ordered fried rolls and pad Thai and a singha beer to recreate most of what I ate while on a trip to Bangkok years ago. No matter how you try to recreate the past, it's always going to pale in comparison. Anyhow, the food is probably closer to three stars but the atmosphere and the friendly service added one more. Gotta come back to try the soups to see if there are more tasty options on the menu. Definitely good but makes me want to go back to Bangkok to see if my memories are just playing tricks on me or if the street vendor pad Thai was just heavenly.
google avatar

Maur P.

Yelp
Nice fried vegetable moves(rolls). I really like the service there, and I am returning soon. Thank you. I wonder if there are other locations of this restaurant.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
This is the best Thai food I've had in my life. A random walk-in, "spur of the moment" decision landed us here. We went in around 5:30, The food came out really fast and FRESH. Flavors were SPECTACULAR and the customer service was excellent. Now every time I'm in the Haight, I'm going to be hungry for Thai at HIPPIE THAI!!!! I had the Salmon Pineapple Curry. OMG SO GOOD!!!!!!!
google avatar

Janis R.

Yelp
This place looks cool from outside, good menu concept and seemed to have a lot of variety with "street food" and all the staples. Ordered the BBQ chicken over rice... Bland. Left a lot to be desired. I got it to go and they charged $1 for extra sauce. Seemed petty when there wasn't enough sauce to go over the chicken in the first place! Are peanuts expensive now! Not to mention the bag charge. $22 for bland rice, chicken not cut thru (chef, what's the point of slicing it if you're not going to follow thru?) Left annoyed. If you're a customer that thinks they like Thai food but don't want any real flavor or heat, this is your place.
google avatar

Nitu S.

Yelp
Tried hippie thai in person first and it was great - I had the pad see ew with tofu & veggies. The next time I ordered for take out and picked it up. I got the same thing again plus the veggie spring rolls - the pad see ew was not as flavorful and the spring rolls were missing the vermicelli (the whole reason I got them). I don't know if I'll go back again but I think their food is much better if you're dining in!
google avatar

Barbara E.

Yelp
In my week stay in SF, this was my most memorable meal. Seating is a bit cramped but once you focus on your meal, you don't care. Our waitress was very nice. I ordered out of my ordinary Thai wheelhouse, and got Tom Yum Pork Belly with the rice noodle option. Omg, I am going to be dreaming about this meal forever. It was soooo good. My friend had the crab fried rice and said it was very good as well. She had our usual Thai Iced Coffee, but since they don't have boba, I passed. Every trip to SF will now include a trip to this place.
google avatar

Casey M.

Yelp
The service was good but the food was mediocre. I ended up paying $25 for the lunch special including tip. The salad came with Italian dressing which was so bizarre in a Thai restaurant, the vegan version of the soup tasted like vegetables in water, and the pad kee mao had no heat or savoriness. It was all edible, but not exciting.

Leif P.

Yelp
Meal was absolutely delicious! Service was impeccable, gracious and friendly. Broke Da Mouth flavors all round Trois Amigo's Recommend
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Terrific American style Thai, some dishes remind me of Bangkok street food like the crab fried rice that they make over the fire in great big steel woks. Curries are delicious as well. Table service, very casual.

Kayla B.

Yelp
Be cautious eating here! I bit into my spring roll, I thought it tasted bitter so I opened it up to find rancid lettuce inside! Absolutely disgusting. Luckily I did not get food poisoning from this place. Food went immediately in the trash.
google avatar

Jane D.

Yelp
Ordered takeout from here and when we finally dug into the bag at home my friend picked up my dish and immediately realized it was light af. Her exact words were "...it looks like they just gave you the leftovers". Even through the lid I could tell it was a tiny amount of food. If I'm paying $14+ for pra ram, I'd like for my food to at least cover bottom of the container? And at an additional dollar for shrimp, it's very disappointing that there were only 6 pieces of shrimp in there. Honestly, it was a pitiful amount of food. Beyond that, they forgot my rice as well. Thai food is always a staple, go-to for me and this is definitely one of the more disappointing meals. Flavors were very average. At least my friend's portion was a reasonable size. Food came out fast, within 10 minutes but idk if I can appreciate that anymore lol. There are better food places in the area and I will not be returning. The place was far from busy when I walked in so very surprised they couldn't even remember rice (and half my dish) in my order.

Nalinrat S.

Yelp
Pad Thai and Laab taste very delicious. I love the Thai food at hippie Thai I promise I'll come back again.
